Every single game I play through DOXbox (with D-Fend v2) sounds abysmal. The audio keeps stuttering, making games with speech all but unplayable.

And yet, I keep seeing people talking about perfect sound emulation. So how the heck do you make it stop stuttering? All the options on the Sound tab in D-Fend are acronyms which make about as much sense as Robin Cook, so Ihave no idea what to fiddle with in hopes it'll solve the problem. Little help?

At the moment, I'm particularly trying to get Legend of Kyrandia 1 (CD), Gabriel Knight 1 (CD) and Star Trek 25th Anniversary to have proper sound.

I never had a problem with sound in either VDMSound or DOSBox. The last time someone talked about this and actualy brought an answer, the guy sais his speakers were blasted...

So, if you can't find a reason why it is not working, try to borrow the speakers of someone you know works fine and try it on your own computer.

If this achieve the same result, I would guess that it is hardware dependant. Do you have a sound card or you are using the built-in soundcard of your computer?

I ca ntell myself, that built-in soundcards work well with DosBox. Maybe you need to change the settings in dosbox.conf?

Or maybe you are simply over or underclocking DOSBox cycles. It tend to alter sound output, for one thing.

Perhaps you would need to try the sound without D-Fend.

never heard this. but if it's always that bad than you should really think about a new soundcard or boxes.
Another way is to install the games correctly. Mostely you have to choose Soundblaster/100% compatible. Have you done this?

The onliest other reason I can think of is, that your computer is too slow. Maybe you sould deactivate some not necessary programms like virusscanner, d-tools, things like that.

I don't think that new sound card and boxes would change anything.

Sound is bad if your computer is too slow, or your cycles are too high.

Hmm, it looks like it is my PC after all. I can't remember exactly what it is, but it's about 3 years old, a Pentium 4 1.8 ghz or somthing.

Anyway, while running Prisoner of Ice with Task Manager open, the CPU Usage reached 100% (nothing else was open), so I reckon it just can't cope. So it can't play really new games, it can't emulate decent old games... Guess I'm stuck with Myst and SCUMM adventures until I can afford a new one (not bloody likely on my salary. Because I'm officialy a trainee, I get considerably less than minimum wage. Bastards)

what is your cpu cycles ?
if it's always 100 % regardless of the cycles....

try changing you colors to 16 bit. (as then you probably use 24 bit and dosbox hates that)

And one advice I'll give you: Clean your drives. Clean your registry. Check your computer for viruses. delete any not necessary programms.
