Wow! Thanks for this, guys!
This game is amazing! Although I think I spent too much time on the character creation... And made me wish other games had the same creation system! :rocks:

I only find the gameplay kind of whacky!

Cheers!

Cause I've seen more sources that say it's a strategy than those that say it's an RPG. Though the truth should be somewhere at the middle. Too bad I can't select both genres like on moby. :mhh: I haven't played the game so I can't tell for sure. But if you think it's an RPG (aka you played it and think so) than I guess we can change it.

well i tried it for a while and it seemed a lot like a classic role playing game

it's based off the pen and paper rpg after all too

Panthro 12-01-2010 04:41 PM

Looks a bit like Jagged Alliance meets Megatraveller.

Which is okay in my book.

daerdevil 12-01-2010 08:20 PM

A blast from the past

One of my favorite games. The number of hours I killed on this thing is inexcusable. Unfortunately, there's a game killing glitch towards the end IIRC. Seemed to me at some point when you try to get Baron Czarny, the game just crashes.

The character creation is the highlight of this game. The 1st person vehicle sequence are the low points. And even lower is encountering a tank in the tactical portion. It spells certain death as you can't really hide nor run away from it's "never miss" machine guns. Some of the best times, I have to admit, were trying to fight a tank with a Humvee in the driving sequence...the porpoise attack never did work. Oh, how I wished for a remake of this one. It's a lot like Jagged Alliance and somewhat sandboxy (I think missions were randomly generated).

There's a reason it looks a bit like MegaTraveller, the people who made the original Traveller/MegaTraveller(The PnP RPGs) also made the original Twilight 2000(The PnP RPG), called Game Designers' Workshop.

Hence why the character creation systems are so extremely similar ;)

I believe I still have this game in my collection, I really loved it. Thanks for bringing it back.

Smrsin 28-03-2010 07:10 PM

This game looks like a very good post-apocaliptyc action, i created 2é members squad, but i don't know, how to send them in action! which key is for that? thx for reply :)

hello. this game looks very good. i made a 20 member squad but i dont know, which key in main menu is for send them in action. can you help me?

Luchsen 28-03-2010 10:15 PM

You won't get a quicker answer just because you repeat yourself. ;)

The Fifth Horseman 28-03-2010 11:40 PM

I believe it was explained in the manual?
Not that I'm much better with this game's control system...

_r.u.s.s. 29-03-2010 12:04 AM

i guess you could pm egsmaster (the reviewer) and ask him about this, as not many people seem to have played this game..

esgmaster 29-03-2010 01:32 AM

If I understand what he's saying correctly it outta be the "deploy" one...

Smrsin 29-03-2010 03:41 PM

thank you so much for help, but I have one more, and the last request for help. Where can I find the car (or some other vehicle) cause moving on feet is so slow :(

One more time I ask you for help. sorry, if this will show many times, but its screwed a bit and my browser sometimes shows me this reply and sometimes no :( a question: where can i get a car?

esgmaster 30-03-2010 02:43 AM

You'll get it when you finish the first mission IIRC.

esgmaster 07-04-2010 05:42 AM

I believe you hit Tab to get up the mini-map and people are red spots...IIRC mind you...

Bele 07-04-2010 12:39 PM

Heh. The door was on the far side of the house so you couldnt see it. Brilliant design :P

If you are going to play this game, keep these points in mind:

1. A lot of the character creation is pointless, mainly because most of the abilities dragged in from the pen and paper RPG are not used in this PC reproduction.

2. Keeping the first point in mind, concentrate on making characters with rifle and heavy weapons specialisations as they will do the majority of the fighting.

3. Make sure you also have the following specialisations as and when you need them: medical, interrogation, mechanic, forward observer, tracked vehicle and wheeled vehicle. You will need characters with these abilities.

4. Make sure your characters doing the bulk of your fighting have an initiative level 4 or higher, otherwise the enemy will get in a lot more shots than you!

5. Make sure your leader can speak Polish, otherwise you will constantly have to waste time bringing over a character from HQ who can speak it to interpretate. Russian would also be useful.

6. Make sure that all characters can speak as many languages as possible, but not at the expense of fighting skills. Make sure that if some peasant out in Poland speaks Scots-Gaelic (yes, it happens for some strange reason) some guy in your squad can speak the lingo.

7. If you want to create a good rifle-based character, use the random allocation for ability scores and keep on saying 'no', until their strength, agility and constitution scores are above 7 (random allocation allows for greater points spent than manual). Enter that character to army and special forces then sniper to boost the rifle skill.

8. For heavy weapons characters, do the same as above, but enter them for the artillery section of the army.

9. If your character creation gets interrupted too early (second or third time) by 'war breaks out', ditch that character, then keep on going until you get their abilities higher.

Hello.

I am having a problem accessing the newly posted map. I have tried downloading it and also opening it up in my browser but I keep on getting an error message that "A Number is out of Range".

Is the problem on my end only or is the map corrupt?

Thank you.

DarthHelmet86 18-06-2012 07:12 AM

No I get it as well, TA you uploaded it could you check to see if it is working on your end and reupload if it isn't.

TotalAnarchy 18-06-2012 10:52 AM

It opens up fine with Foxit Reader. I have no idea what the problem is. I'd suggest refreshing redownloading, or better yet "Save as" if you haven't tried it yet.

cdnp 18-06-2012 01:29 PM

Yes I had downloaded it and thank you it works for me fine with Foxit reader. However it still does not work in Adobe Reader or Acrobat or in my browser which uses the Adobe plugin.

How can I save it after opening it up in Foxit so that it can be read by Adobe?

Thank you.

P.S. There should only be one "L" in the name of the map.

To save you click File>Save as. Anyway it seems to be a problem with Adobe Acrobat. I will reedit the map using a different application and reupload it. Hopefully it will work with all PDF readers.

Edit: I am not able to edit or repair the file. I have better chances rebuilding from printscreened images.

The Fifth Horseman 18-06-2012 07:11 PM

Printscreen isn't neccessary - there are tools for "ripping" PDFs to image files (and Foxit can copy the entire page to clipboard as an image).

TotalAnarchy 23-06-2012 12:07 PM

The map has been replaced. Can someone verify it?

anyone have any experience with the expansion for this game "the colonel". anyone knows whats in it or if it was a commercial release? I've been searching all over for information on the expansion, I've even talked to one of the originals games programmers but I cannot confirm an actual boxed release or what additional content is included in the expansion..

Some sources claim it was bundled with the game release (or at least some of the releases).
Here is an alleged copy found elsewhere (NOT checked!!!):

that makes sence. I talked to Don Wuenschell who programed the origional game and he said he remembers it being bundeled with the origional and he thinks it was also avaliiable as a download on the company website. I was curious it it ever got a stand alone retail release and he thinks he remembers it as a retail release for a very short period of time time but he didn't personnaly work on the expansion. I've never seen a copy of the expansion on EBAY or see mention of a TW2K and expansion bundle. the copy I have also did not come with the expansion.

Wow! would you be so kind to scan those floppies and anything else you might have, like some cover or box or manual? And if possible, create floppy images as well?

GRUD 11-05-2016 08:06 AM

I played this a LOT on my C-64, and discovered making your fighters be USMC gave them higher starting weapons skills. I Think I made them Force Recon also, with at least one Sniper and one Heavy Weapons, but it's been "A While" since I played, so I don't remember exactly. I remember For Sure about the USMC thing though. =\ I also discovered the hard way that you need to have pretty much EVERY language covered. =P
