Hello! ^_^
I'm a bit curious...
What kind of music do you like most?
And what band?

Allright... I love melodic metal :ok: and my favorite band is Blind Guardian... and Angra (the new album is great!)

- Sorry for my english... -

My favourite kind of music is Goth - from bands like Gossamer and Inconnumedia. These are not artists played on radio -- their music is found only on the internet. I rarely listen to anything as I prefer silence most of the time, but when I start a new multimedia project, I download music from free sites like the defunct mp3.com to get inspiration for my own. I also like New Age both to listen to and to compose as this style is most easily created on computer software.

Iron_Scarecrow 08-12-2004 03:41 AM

Hardcore Punk/ Punk Rock

RISE AGAINST, THRICE, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, AFI!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :Brain: :Brain: :Brain:

wormpaul 08-12-2004 07:30 AM

Hmm..

Specially ROCK songs..

bands like:

Queen
Led Zeppelin
Queens of the Stone age
Guns and Roses

But also artist like:

Alanis morrisette
Eminen
Madonna

And so many more....just loving good music in any way...

@iron: Isnt it: Race against (the machine???)

Or did you mean a other band???

Puffin 08-12-2004 07:32 AM

@wormpaul & Iron:
Wasn't it Rage against the machine?

Anyways, I listen to a wide range of music. But I don't like r'n'b or rap.
I especially like old-rock.

wormpaul 08-12-2004 07:35 AM

@Puffin: Now i see it ...i know it..

And you;re right..

Rage Against the machine...totally correct

Eagle of Fire 08-12-2004 07:41 AM

I'm not really into music. I never buy an album of any group because I don't feel like there is good enough music out there to waste money on when you can get it free. Plus, I know for sure that half of each CD is a filler of the precedent. You would probably get a few (if not only one) good song on it and the rest only fill up space to give the impression it was worth the purchase.

I mainly prefer to listen to Pop and Rock (mainly on the radio when I'm driving), and I just can't stand Country and Rap.

Basically, any music which has a good beat and good rymes will usually go by me.

I did mean another band. There is an underground punk rock band called Rise Against. They have three albums, latest one is called Siren Song of the Counter Culture. The Cover of that album is now my avatar. :ok:

wormpaul 08-12-2004 09:14 AM

Ok...never heard of that band before...

Iron_Scarecrow 08-12-2004 09:21 AM

Well like I said they are underground punk rock, they don't get as much publicity as other bands. Even though they ten times better than all the bands out there that claim they are punk. Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and so on are not punk rock. I'm a member of some forum on Hi5 about punk rock music and anyone who likes any of those crappy emo punk bands, I just give them so much muck and they get all deffensive saying they are punk rock, when the truth is they aren't. It's quite fun. :ok:

wormpaul 08-12-2004 09:27 AM

Without defending those bands: (i hate them..)

But Punk Rock is so wide area that even bands like those fell in that categorie...maybe they arent that extremly punk as you consider them but still it's punk with a little bit of rock in it (and a whole scala of POP infludence)

So you can still burn them to the ground but official it's Punk/rock...

Iron_Scarecrow 08-12-2004 09:32 AM

No it's officially punk. Punk rock, pop punk, emo punk and hardcore punk are all sub genres of punk. So those bands are punk but they not punk rock they are emo punk.

Hope I made that clear enough. :ok:

wormpaul 08-12-2004 09:33 AM

uuh..

EMO punk??

stand that for: Emotion Punk???

Then it's a totally wrong class for bands like that :not_ok:

Iron_Scarecrow 08-12-2004 09:45 AM

Quote:

uuh..

Then it's a totally wrong class for bands like that

Yeah it's emotional punk as far as I know.

From the discussions I have had, this is what I've found out.

Emo punk is about the lyrics, all these bands like Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, and even Blink now are all about emotional situations, such as break-ups with girlfriends. This is why they are referred as emo punk.

wormpaul 08-12-2004 09:52 AM

Hmm..

In my opinion the lyrics of bands that you ment there really sucks..

They cant write good lyrics (i always give a lot of attention to lyrics) and because they only talk about "things happen in life" doesnt make them good emo songs...

When you wanna hear brilliant lyrics go listen to:

Van Dik hout (damm..it's dutch...you wont understand it :not_ok: )

Alanis Morrisette (Great lyrics...specially on the 2 first albums...)

Metallica (such a great lyrics...again specially albums 1 till 5 )

Hmm..maybe you didnt mean this...but i just felt the need to say this all..

Iron_Scarecrow 08-12-2004 09:57 AM

I don't know about Metallica's lyrics but their best albums are deffinently the first 5. I'm no big fan of Metallica but I have heard enough to realise this.

I don't quite care for lyrics. As long as they flow with the music, they fine. But the meaning behind the lyrics I'm not interested in. But these emo bands play a little slower than the bands I listen to, that is the main reason I don't like them.

But because the lyrics are about those situations, they are labelled emo. But I can not be too sure about this. I admit I don't know enough on the topic to back this up completely. This is just the impression I get from conversations I have had.

Is this the band form the single:

Bless the Child??

That band got a really weak frontwoman....she cant sing that good...and she looks horrbile...

Better have something like this:

Sharon from Within Temptation (dutch band)

She looks hot....at least to me .(I think it's also not Picards type :Titan: )

Iron_Scarecrow 08-12-2004 11:50 AM

I have only heard 12 songs from nightwish but what I have heard she is a good singer, in my opinion. But I dont know what she looks like. I have heard one song form Within Tempatation and I like it. :ok:

My Music

N17R0 08-12-2004 11:32 PM

Titan 08-12-2004 11:59 PM

Yeah.. also into electronic..

But i can't realy stand the concept of a "song"... a Song is never better then the songs it can be mixed with into a continious stream of music...

Right now, i'm doing alot of Club-trance and Pretty serious Techno.. along with some Acid..

List (dj's and artists):
Carl Cox
UMEK
Paul Oakenfold
Hallucinogen
Sven Väth
Infected Mushroom
Yahel
Skazi
Chris Liebing
Midi Miliz
Westbam

Well.. if you would like to hear what kind of music this is, i uploaded a session with Westbam (sorry Kosta) right HERE. Recorded at this years Loveparade in Berlin, and ripped from a radio-broadcast.

It's 86 MB, :tease: and easy-listening dance-music and pretty down-temo.. if you have the time, Listen to it, even thou it might not be just your type..

you haven't heard anything from at-the-drive-in? I swear it could actually change your life it is so damn good. Well, their last CD (they broke up in '99, half the group formed Mars Volta, other half formed Sparta) was Relationship of Command. Its actually just been re-issued, so if you are willing to spend some money you could buy it cheaply right now. If not, here are some songs you could look up:

one armed scissor
spacewalk capsules
in

that should satisfy you for now, tell me if you want more. enjoy :ok:

Iron_Scarecrow 11-12-2004 01:51 PM

Thanks I'll check those songs out. :ok:

I knew Mars Volta had been formed cause their last band broke up but I didn't know what it was called. But now that I know it was At-the-Drive-In I really want to hear some songs by them. :ok:

Ahn... Sorry but Nightwish is only melodic metal ^_^
Sepultura is trash metal - heavier in all ways... And Rhapsody is power metal (often heh)...
Angels Fall First is Nightwish best song, in my opinion...
[Well, this band is pretty famous here in Brazil...]
But I like much more Stratovarius :ok:

Please please, someone knows Angra?

Yeah I like U2 too... And The Cure, I leaned to listen music with this band ;)

I prefer lesser known underground music, but i listen to loads of differant music, not just unknown rap.

Ioncannon 21-12-2004 11:26 PM

I like System of the Down, Billy Talent, AFI, and a few others.

FreeFreddy 22-12-2004 01:30 PM

I started to listen to Trance lately, as I was with my girlfriend in a disco last weekend and there I heard some pretty nice pieces.
Of composers / DJ's I can recommend: CJ Stone, Delerium, Dumonde, Hiver & Hammer...

Delerium, Velvet Acid Christ, Skinny Puppy, System of a Down, AFI, got all those. I'm a hardcore music enthusiast, I have about everything. I'm currently ripping my vynils to mp3 as I post. Right now I'm ripping Kansas - Vynil Confessions. I also have pretty much every Beatles album on record (White album, Sgt Pepper original and movie soundtrack). I also have some cd rarities, various Kid 606 albums, japanese imports, etc. I also have a music library on my pc which currently consists of 12600 songs. and electronica styles, such as:

feminista 23-12-2004 04:38 AM

Yeek, I know a message board or three that would NOT approve of the content of this topic. That said, I'm a punk fan myself, but I'd better qualify that, given some people's impression of punk around here. I like first wave punk (X-Ray Spex, Stiff Little Fingers, the Avengers), the tiniest bit of 80s hardcore (Bad Brains, Black Flag, and Reagan Youth), some Oi! (Sham 69, Cockney Rejects), and one genre that is my own private obsession: Riot Grrl. If you don't know what it is, well, first off, it has NOTHING at all to do with Good Charlotte. It's early to mid-nineties feminist punk, and it's pretty intense stuff. The bands most often associated with the label are Bikini Kill and Bratmobile, but I like a lot more than that, including Dominatrix, Sleater-Kinney, Excuse 17, Babes in Toyland, Team Dresch, 7 Year Bitch, Lunachicks, I could go on forever. The Gits get a special note, because they're not riot grrl, but they ARE awesome girl-fronted punk. Sadly, they're only famous because their singer, Mia Zapata, was murdered. And they're still not THAT well known.

I'm pretty obsessive about my music, which means a large part of this topic disgusts me. Luckily, there are other places I can go where people share my obsessions.

Oh, and if you're getting into trance, I can give you some good recommendations. The trance that stands out in my mind most of the time is the stuff that really gets emotional in the melody. Like Soul Cry by DJ Tatana and The Mystery. That one is just phenomenal once it gets into the song. Then there's some of the trippier stuff that I like too. The songs off Infected Mushroom's cd I'm The Supervisor are just WILD. :Brain:

edlglide 23-12-2004 09:00 AM

To be really accurate, there is no such thing as punk now (in popular music, at least). Punk was a type of music that was only around for a few years during the 70s and early 80s, then it turned into New Wave. But then New Wave merged with mainstream rock and bands like U2 which were originally considered New Wave were really indistinguishable from mainstream rock bands. Then alternative came around, and those genres all merged together to create what is called rock now. But it's as different from 1970s rock as 1970s rock is from 1950s rock.

(I just finished taking a class on the history of rock music, so I know quite a bit about this stuff now)

Oh, I just remembered, if you want an interesting genre in the electronic branch to listen to, check out groups like VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berserk, and Seabound. They're all darkwave, and it is some REALLY good stuff (especially VNV Nation :ok: )

To be really accurate, there is no such thing as punk now (in popular music, at least).* Punk was a type of music that was only around for a few years during the 70s and early 80s, then it turned into New Wave.
While that's partially true, it's an oversimplification. Punk developed into more genres than New Wave. Punk also split into hardcore and post-punk as well as new wave. New wave became more commercially acceptable, so it had the most effect on later "alternative" music. However, grunge developed independently of new wave, and grunge really defined modern mainstream rock. Hardcore kept on going strong and continued in the same direction, though at some point post-hardcore split off and went its own direction. Post-punk is important to mention, because many people consider it to be one of the most creative and rich musical movements in rock history.

Simply put, pure punk no longer exists, but many subgenres of it still do, so "punk" is often an appropriate adjective used as a blanket description. And let us not forget riot grrl, which was essentially a rebirth of punk, but with a feminist focus.

Plus, a difficulty arises when trying to limit punk to a few year spread (say, 1976-1982). That problem is thus: most of the recent music I listen to is not hardcore, grunge, post-punk, or new wave. Yet it cannot be described as being a subsidiary of any other genre but punk, so how is it not punk?

It's better to accept vague labels, and apply more specific ones when given the opportunity, rather than trying to eliminate vague labels all together. That said, saying that you listen to punk is rather en vogue as of now, so take people's claims of punkness with skepticism.

For more information, drift on over to rateyourmusic.com and search out the topic "is punk dead?"

edlglide 24-12-2004 08:13 AM

This is true; old musical styles never really disappear. Even 50s rockabilly still exists.

Also, grunge can be thought of as the real American version of punk -- not necessarily in musical style, but in spirit. Even though we had famous punk bands from the US, punk was really created in the UK. Although the Sex Pistols were more publicity stunt than band, the fact remains that teens in the UK during the 70s were the ones that really had something to revolt against, as the economic situation there was terrible.......far worse than that in the US.

Irregardless of all that, I'm not a big fan of punk. I'm more of a fan of late 60s and 70s stuff, including but not limited to the prog rock of bands like Yes and Genesis (and to a lesser extent Jethro Tull) that punk was partially rebelling against.

Rock - Pearl Jam, Santana, 311

Quit listening to the radio kids LOL

feminista 31-12-2004 01:56 AM

HighProtein: Good job for not listening to the radio and all, but it's better to not act elitist unless you can name some bands that are less well known. It looks like you've scratched the surface of punk, or maybe you listen to what people tell you is good, I don't know, but there's a lot more to it than that. The Clash are widely regarded as one of the worst sellouts of punk history, and they pandered to the mainstream crowd much more than most first wave punk bands, hence their popularity. The Ramones are generally poppy, despite playing fasterlouder, and they represented more of a punk interpretation of bubblegum than anything particularly in line with the punk ideal. Bad Religion, also quite popular but regarded by most punk elitists to be fairly limited as far as talent. Myself, I think their lyrics are worthy and interesting, but it is difficult to call them a great band. I usually reserve them to the realm of "good, but nothing amazing". And Pearl Jam? Not so hardcore and indie.

No hard feelings, just don't be overbearing with your assumed musical superiority.

P.S.: I'm completely confused about the renewed interest in Social D. I have the self-titled, and the blatant country influence generally turns me off of it, despite them having catchy tunes. Either way, there has been a great increase in name-dropping thereof, which has left me, frankly, a bit baffled.

LOL those two have much in common...

Anyway music that I like is Rock(true rock back from 70's and some modern like white stripes not bands like Maroon 5 - they're more like pop),Punk(Ramones,The Clash,Dead Kennedys and some unknown croatian bands) , and ska with bands like Mad Caddies,King Prawn etc. I don't like when they use electronics with guitars
(like most of nu metal mtv factory bands) other types of music I mostly ignore but I disgust the before mentioned EX-YU and R'n'B.

You can't really separate bands like this. Punk is essentially a form of rock, so to say these bands are punk and these are rock is silly. Especially since Pearl Jam (at least originally) is probably closer to punk as a grunge band than it is to rock like the old Santana (that new CD that came out a couple of years ago is a bunch of awful poppy muck). And 311 is alternative I suppose, which is very different from original rock as well.

Also, listening to bands that aren't well-known and don't come on the radio doesn't mean anything. Most bands that ARE well-known are well-known because they were the best bands.............this may not be true as much now, or with a genre like punk -- but people like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the Beach Boys (they are arguably as influential as the Beatles in the history and evolution of rock, but most normal people don't realize that or give them any credit for it.......and it's really Brian Wilson more than the Beach Boys as a whole) were some of the most talented bands of their eras. There were certainly some bands like Love who never became well-known and were very talented, but generally all the famous bands from earlier eras are famous for good reason.

feminista 03-01-2005 06:27 PM

I would be careful with saying things like that. It may have been nearly true if one goes all the way back to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, but it hasn't been true for a very long time, even in the sixties and seventies. The Velvet Underground were largely unknown in their time, and Patti Smith didn't get much recognition until there was a renewed interest in New York proto-punk as people tried to discover the roots of punk.

In fact, one of the precepts of punk music is that mainstream music was ruined when it was turned into a business, and that most mainstream music is a tool of the industry to control the tastes of the masses and therefore sell more products. I stand by this belief, and I think you will find many fans of many different genres that will tell you the same thing. If you are listening only to bands who everyone has heard of, such as the three you named, you probably aren't much of a music fan. It's fine to appreciate some mainstream bands, and I'm sure not too many people are going to try to tell you that Led Zeppelin is horrible (though I don't enjoy them), but saying that bands who are easier name-drops are better is utterly fallacious. Well-known music is whatever the industry decided people would like, that's why we invented independent music, to make good music instead of popular music (or in the case of punk, intense music that had a narrow band of appeal rather than mass appeal).

I like Aha as one of the groups of the 80th. Songs like "Take on me" and "The Sun always shines on TV" ("Touch me") should be pretty good examples.
Also "Relax" of Frankie Goes to Hollywood is cool.

Yeah Danny genre's is exactly the right word to use. The main stuff I listen to is Psychadelic Hippy Stuff, - "The Incredible String Band" for example I also love old Blues like Robert Johnson, Leadbelly and stuff like that.

That depends... i think it's as good as the previous
EDIT No wait let me rephrase that:

I rarely listen to anything as I prefer silence most of the time, but when I start a new multimedia project, I download music from free sites like the defunct mp3.com to get inspiration for my own. I also like New Age both to listen to and to compose as this style is most easily created on computer software.

Well downloading wasn't illegal until this year and I also converted all the favorite songs from my CD collection (around 250 CDs) into MP3 and I did the same with my brothers and my parents CDs (they used to be ours, but now we each live in seperate towns so I decided we should not loose any of our music choises...).

And I really liked it when I got a 120G HD. I thought that's enough for now (but I've bought a USB plug in disk for additional 200G...).

Enterprise eat your heart out (BTW the shuttle Enterprise had only 128k of memory and they said that should be enough for just about everything).

0_0 Peaches? Lesbians? I've never been able to listen to Peaches because I can't stand bands who sing only about sex, but I guess I never thought to check whether it was about heterosex or not. 0_o I'm shocked, given their live antics. But I guess it works the same way Wendy O. Williams can be considered a feminist.

And of course, I'm aware of Ani DiFranco, Indigo Girls, kd lang, etc, it's just that I limit my collection to punk for the most part. I really don't enjoy much else.

You just ignored that Rap has good beats and (typically) good rhymes.
Not saying good lyrical themes or language, but I always thought of it as cool besides those quite ugly sores in it's side.
Christian Rap anyone?

Country, I refuse to defend. No grounds in my mind. It has beats and rhymes too, but, eh, not in my head.

You have a very strange attitude about music. Some times, though, it's just what you're into. Some people aren't into video games, (:omg:) some not into music.

It's strange to me because I have discovered whole albums that I like EVERY song on it in some way or another.

Try: The New Cities; Lost in City Lights.

Every song, great album. Very much in the Pop/Rock Genre.
You should check it out. PM me if you do and you like. Otherwise, ignore. :(

I'm into rock music: Billy Talent, Killradio, Escape The Fate, Rise Against, My Chemical Romance - this kind of stuff.

I'm all over the place with music but I like 80s New Wave, Synth-pop, House, Eurodance, Post-Disco. Currently enjoying Jessie Ware's new album. It's like a grown up version of Dua Lipa's newer stuff.

I'm not interested in listening songs.. My preference is instrumental music.. Especially, Flute music and guitar music.. I feel any song more deeply when playing it instrumental rather than singing it in words..

Indeed, a melodic play of sound can often express a lot more than any words in a song, if one just listens to it with open mind.

Depends on the lyrics.
Can't name many where I like the music and the lyrics however.
