I have an old 486 and i wonder about the games and from what year it would run. I have no idea about the specs and how to find out. It has a Tulip case and screen.

I like to play some old DOS games on them. If i download an old DOS game could i play them on it whitout a prob?

I can remember i tried to play "Firepower" on it and it went to fast!

Yes, it's the CPU name, just like Pentium 4 2.6Ghz. I bet you have just 486DX2-66Mhz though, not 486DX4-100Mhz. In any case, a Pentium 100 is faster than 486DX4-100.

Hmm, i think it's a intel i468 SX (that's on the mobo). Well, i still missing some stuff right now so i cant fire it up at the moment. I have all the stuff but it's scattered all over the place (house)

A 486SX? Then it's speed is probably 33Mhz. That would be little too slow for some of the Dos games here...

For what year are whe talking about then? I used that box way up the 90th. Now i think about it i could only play the old crap games. :blink: LOL

That will still be enough for most DOS games, altough some more resource demanding (like, C&C or Warcraft II) won't work with that.

As for the CPU, let's end the theoretizing please and wait for the actual data. Otherwise this thread is going nowhere.

The 486SX was popular in 1990. It had a frequency of 25MHz and was the small brother of the 486DX, which had 33MHz speed and a maths coprocessor.

In these days, there was a funny rumor: One could activate the maths chip (which was supplied with a SX but deactivated) by drilling a 0.1mm hole through a certain point on the mainboard and turn a SX to a fully grown DX that way. When the SX became old fashioned I tried this thing out. After destroying three boards without a success I stopped to ruin my beloved old hardware. I think it was a myth after all, but even nowadays I still hear people braggin' about it.

It is surely not the fastest solution for a good DOS-gaming PC, but many of the older games here on Abandonia should run without problems. Just give it a try. I would suggest to start with games from 1992 and older. :ok:
