Livestock is the easiest way to make money. Use ditches as fences, they never break.
|
I disagree, the easiest way to make lots of money is definetely growing massive amounts of oranges.
|
Can't get it to work.. I wish this were the updated windows version.. Ohwell.
|
strategy?
when is the best time to sell livestock? which livstock is the best for quick cash?
|
Actually I found that livestock is very very very cheap and unproductive. I keep it only as eye candy to boot the farm feel going on. I played this for many hours and months I should know, strawberries sell best. Once you get yourself few strawberry fields going and you have your economy up you can expand and build other goodies. Eventually getting that airplane to dust your fields.
This is a great game. I recomend it to all. My grade for this jewel 7/5 :) |
Quote:
But how can you make the plain really flying???...it always chrash at me when i try to get in th air  |
When I played this game long time ago, I remember growing a load of strawberries.
And BTW I never got my airplane fly neither! |
Does the sound dos sound come from the computer or the speakers
|
Ok I got the sound effects going but I hav'nt got the music going
|
No worry's I got the music and the sound effects going :ok:
|
i got the plane in the air... and i now how to fly
only one problem HOW DO YOU LAND!!! |
Aim for the ground
(Honestly I don't know, never played the game) |
i can't get the damn thing to work its just an icon thingy on my desktop an i click on it an this thing comes up asking what i want to open it with.....some one help me :wall:
|
Quote:
This is a little problem though. You just right click the file, and click the "rename" option. Then you just give the file a zip extension, call it "sim.zip" for instance. Now you can extract it like any other zip file. Hope this helped, if you got any other problems, be sure to post them. :ok: |
Quote:
|
ok i got the thing to open but now when i try to choose the first sound card an i chose sound blaster 2.0, that worked ok an then it asks to choose another one an i tried em all an none of them worked. an when it "finishes" setup where do i go to play it????
ur input has been good so far, thanks :ranting: |
oranges are most expensive but they require lots of spraying. i'd go with strawberries instead.
there's a small "bug" in the game. prices fluctuate during time but when you start the game prices are allways the same. (for examle strawberries are around 13k.) you can build many silos and store strawberries and then save and quit. when you load the game price will be 13k. (otherways it is around 6k). it's the quickest way to earn tons of money |
@ nolo
Just drag&drop simfarm.exe over dosbox and it will work propetly (at least here it does) :ok: |

 just where do we find the oranges? because i have no option of planting oranges... i used to have this game but i forgot how most of it works!
|
What's the compatibility of Sim Farm? Will it work on a Mac?
|
It should with DOSBox.
|
anyone know where you can download farms?
|
I tried to download the game and I unzipped the file and everything, but it won't run for erason, keeps giving me an pop-up that says the file can't run DOS or windows applications. anyone have any advice ??
thanks |
Get DOSBox and a GUI for it.

By the way, strawberries are indeed a quick way to make cash, but they require quite some spraying, etc. I prefer buying lots of horses. All you have to do is renew the food every now and then, and make sure they don't die of thirst. And they provide you with a decent lot of cash in a short time as well. Oh, and when does the game ever end? I once owned the whole map, and it still didn't stop  |
i have some tips first off get oranges you only have to spray them for 2 years and then they never need spraying also befor u go to sell ur crops hit drought and watch ur prices they will eventually go up keep doing this untill u can sell oranges for like 30000 for grade a and strawberrys for like 25000 for grade a also buy a barn and put irrigation ditches around it and put cows into it and then compleatly shut off the barn with irrigation dithces where the cows are trapped inside they never need feeding let them get to over 1000 and sell and repeat also do not cheat buy typing in fund it makes ur taxes unreal u will never win just some tips let me know how thy help u

How to land a plane Easy: Up your flaps, decrease your engine's speed, but on the air brakes, said the control tower if u can land...and try to aim in the center!
|
This is the first game I ever got on my own computer. Many fond memories playing this game: growing fields... mending fences... crashing the crop duster... :D
|
so small cheat... press shift and write: korn and press enter so this isn't correctly but is very good for u red acc
|
Quote:

You have to load them up in the crop selection.. Can't remember exactly where, it's been 10 years since I last played it, but it should be somewhere in the top bar options. |
I've asked it before, but this keeps bugging me: when or how does this game ever ends? I think I once bought the whole map (don't know if you could buy city property), and it still didn't stop. Or was there a time limit to it?
|

If you're bored, crank out a number of disasters and stuff and then try to get it all back into control. |

Yeah... I left developing my Mega-City One in SC2000 after getting it to run almost completely perfect with a 1 700 000 population... These games are time-killers, but the lack of any real ending is somewhat disappointing.
|
Definately go for Oranges. spray a few years then cash in. Get some silos to store them until the right time of year hits and cash in big time.
|
if i'm thinking right oranges hype to 38k every other year in may or july but i never manage to catch them :(

I have a question, How do you spray with the crop duster? i've hit every key on my keyboard, but i can't seem to find it.

Also, my town never grows. Do i need to do something, or does it just spontaneously grow?
|
I try to install this game, i have XP and it says something to the extent that my system is not suitablt for running MS-DOS and microsoft windows applications. any suggestions?

Can anyone tell me how to get the oranges or is that something you unlock with scenarios?
|
I don't remember exactly (it's been YEARS since I last played Simfarm), but there was a menu somwhere where you could change the plant/crop types that are on your current "palette".
|
Quote:
In one of the menu's there's an option for that. Sorry, I'm repeating the_fifth_horseman, I'm looking up that menu now, just to add something. Ok: File ---> load crop Easy, wasn't it :D |
Thank ya Horseman and Doubler :)
I'll give it a whirl! |
Does anybody know where I can download the game off the internet? Because I have looked everywhere! :wall:
|
Can anybody help me?
I can't find a site where I can download at least the whole game or a free trial of the game. If you could thanks. :w00t: :D |
The game is ESA-protected, I'm afraid. But I believe it's up for download at the Underdogs.
Oh, and by the way, if you want to use tags, you you need to close them as well.;) |
where to download? :eeeeeh:
|
It's on the Underdogs here.
|
And if we can't get it to install from Underdogs because it can't read a file...
|
Remember, Google is your friend...

I already tried Google, Google is muck.

It's your friend. The trick is to know how to form queries right.

No ESA-bashing, please.:not_ok: If you think $13.50 is too much for the game, fair enough. Nobody's forcing you to buy it, you know. And you don't have to play it either. Computer games aren't exactly necessaries of life...
|
Hmm I actually bought the game for about 3 euro's in some budget store though.
|
I can't fine a online manual for this anywhere. Anyone got any link?
|
Check back later...I will see what I can do. I have the regular manual, I will have to install some stuff to put it up or sent it to someone that can convert it

How do you take care of a toxic crop?
|
A toxic crop?
You mean when the ground has become poisened? You can't take care of that in any other way then crop rotation. You'll just have to wait, iirc. |
Of course you can change the schedule to plan a harvest immediately. That way you don't have to wait until the ruined crop is harvested according to the original schedule. Usually such crops are beyond saving anyway, so the quicker you get rid of them, the better.

What is the point of this game please help :help:
|
The game cannot be finished. There is no point.
|
The point is in fact to create something.
Many people have trouble understanding these games. They should realize that creating something, watching it grow and flourish, and eventually the feeling of having created it yourself is a goal in itself. :) |
tim briefly mentioned the best moneymaker per work & money spent.
There's a huge flaw in the game where livestock while inside a barn don't require extra water-hay. There's a second huge flaw that has livestock from the different barns all act like they're in a single barn. There's a third huge flaw that has livestock unable to leave the barn if there's a drainage ditch on all sides. There's a fifth huge flaw that has the barn never run out of feed and water without costing extra money as long as it has water access. Start off with 4 cows... end up with 1015 or 1025 (can't remember exact cutoff number where no new livestock gets born) without any feed costs... very small costs for building barns (they never deteriorate and need replacing), no machinery repair costs or harvesting costs. Sell for 800 per cow selling 100+ head of cows on a constant basis when they hit B grade (you run out of space for new cows if you don't), no cost for fertalizer/insecticides/etc., very small space used up in process. Here's an ascii diagram to give folks an idea how the scheme works (notice the two pumps way off to the side next to each other.. that's to insude water during flood times too... during a drought add more ditches and pumps as needed it's a very minor waste of money). L = lake, B = barn, P = pump, - = left-right irrigation ditch, | = up-down irrigation ditch -------------P----------P----PL |B|B|B|B|B| ------P------- |B|B|B|B|B| -------------P You may need more or less pumps than that. The key is to make sure there's a constant supply of water to every barn. By doing that grid pattern you surround it with ditches to keep the cattle in and at same time give it the constant water supply so they don't 'starve'. This also minimizes the space needed. It's been about a decade since I last played this game and my 3.5 disk no longer works so I can't supply a picture of the scheme in action but basically it takes up about 3-4 fields worth of space but gives you every week or two another 10k or so. You can use this then buy up the entire rest of the map (minus the city parts) and just leave it as open space for the deer and buffalo to roam in. Only downside to this scheme is that you make so much money that you pay so much taxes that the city grows unbelievably fast so its hard to buy up the map. BTW Cows work best for this method. Pigs and sheep have too short of a lifetime, horses have too few babies born in a time period. Think that's too much of a cheat or too much work constantly selling off cattle? Try the fallow apples method. Yes, only in SimFarm can the laziest SOB become a member of the slovenly rich. Put in an apple field. Don't spray anything onto it, watch harvest time. What rate is it? If value is 0 bulldoze the field and plant a new crop of apples. If it's higher than 0 you will never ever have to do anything with that field except harvest them and always make more money than harvesting cost (even if you rent the equipment as well as pay the workers). Sure you won't make the big bucks as if you put a ton of time, effort, and money into the fields... but you also don't have to worry about doing any work once you get a 'decent' orchard since the bugs will never damage the crop, etc. Basically think of it as the aggriculturists version of a roach tentement where the owner takes money in but doesn't do any work and the poor tenants suffer but never move away. For some reason the fallow field method works best with apples not oranges or other crops. It does work though with all of the 'permanent' tree crops. |
Nice tip but how do I get the cows in the barn? Or do I leave some space left for them to walk on (2 spaces orso)?
No cows being born the whole 2 years now though bought 10 of them :( Edit* The messages "Need more roads" and "machinery blocked or to far away" are realy anoying. The roads are everywere and even goes directly to the town (if it actualy needs to go there in the first place). Machineries aren't blocked or to far away its next to my field for crying out loud :P I rememberd these messages also bugged me a few years ago also. |
Cattle should have some space around the barn so they can reach it after they've fed and drunk.
I don't remember the exact time anymore before your animals start giving birth. The "help/info" function provides the answer somewhere. And I preferred horses to cows, they seemed a faster way to get rich. Yes, those messages are annoying indeed, though I've often managed to please the MEEP system even with only a few roads. |

Hi. Can any tell me how you buy and sell futures?
Thanks. Ron |
Urm... try re-wording that question.
|
You don't buy or sell futures, you agree on them. It means that you'll sell the crop against the prices as they are at the time that you issue the future, no matter if it rises or falls in the meantime. You can do this in the schedual for a field, iirc :)
|
Is there any way to prevent city growth?
I tried buying all the land around city but... the city built in a a non-contiguous lot. BTW, the futures work like this: - Select a field you're growing, select the futures icon and click on the date of that same week. - Then, when your crop is harvested it will be sold quickly (no storage needed) at the price shown on the week you set it (if its quality ends at 100%). - You can see the total amount you'll get because of futures in your balance sheet, and the amount lost if the price was higher on harvest time that it was when you set the futures. 2nd BTW: this game is fun. |
I donīt know how to expand my lands... I have about 300k in my hands and nothing to buy more lands... How?
|
Okay.. I have the original SIM FARM on 2 hard disk's disk one and disk two.. the only thing is i have a turtle beach sound card. which sound choice would work on that? I don't have a selection for sound blaster 2. but there is a sound blaster. a sound blaster pro 1 and 2 and other oddities. but i don't know which one will work. and there are too many to decide how to test LOL. any help?
|
What exact specs are you running at?
What is your soundcard? |
How do you harvest a field i sound like a dummie but i don't have the directions to help me?
|
I hope I remember this well, it's been at least 10 years :)
Right-click on the field; you will see a planning layout there with month, year and little icons showing crops and grey icons showing silos. When the time reaches the date where such a silo icon is situated, the field will be harvested. You can use the buttons next to the timeline to add icons to the timeline (for example if you want to harvest next week already). However when you just plant a field, the timeline will already include dates for harvest. So you better have a good reason to harvest earlier (for example the crop has already matured quite a bit and the prices will likely drop soon; or the crop has been eaten by locusts so you want to plant something new instead). Make sure that you have seeds, fertilizer, pesticide, fungicide, herbicide available, otherwise it's more expensive. Also, there is a help file in the game (see the right side of the menu, you should find help there). |
Can somebody set me straight here?
I have both versions of Sim Farm. Either the Windows version is corrupt or I am a retard. When I run the windows version, the graphics actually look worse than when I run the Dos version with dosbox!! What am I doing wrong here? Running Windows XP. ANY HELP would be appreciated!!! |
DosBox has its' "scalers", so... that's possible.
|
Help Plzzz.. I downloaded the game and when i try to install it i have no video and when i alt tab it i can see it. Then it says the that sound stuff has errored and it closes. How do i install it? Plz help
|
It seems you are trying to run the game in plain Windows. I strongly suggest you use DosBox instead. You can download it here. You might want to check out the official DosBox FAQ, and particularly this part of it. It is quite helpful for users unfamiliar with DosBox. |
Another masterpiece simulation from Maxis. Interesting, educative, addictive, chiseled in the smallest details... Only the good stuff.
|
Can someone explain the weather in this game? Most of the more profitable crops need approximately 6-10 days of rain according to the in-game help menu. When I design my own land plot I put the rain bar down to nothing, and it stills rains about 25-30 days a year, and of course my crops are all flooded. What's going on? Anyway I can help drain the fields or something?
|
Empty ditches drain fields when placed around their edges, iirc :)
|
best way to make money on SimFarm:
Start off making your homestead+original farm where it has a river running (most likely!) on the far right part of your farm. Sell all your land except the one with your house, or buy more plots of land around your homestead-- your choice. 6 land tiles (where you buy and sell) is enough (for me anyway)-- not including the one with your homestead (I dont care about that house... it just takes up room >.<) Okie dokie, now you're probably starting fresh. Go to File > Load Crops. I would load Oranges and Gladioloas... uerr i cannot spell. Why I chose gladio-- you know what i mean-- i have no IDEA, I played this game in the 4th grade and I'm a college grad now -.-; Ok, so you clean up your new land (or using the land you already got), clean up the llama doodoo and trees etc. Design your farm as you see fit. Drop down two (or more-- up to you!) gladie fields. Pause your game. Buy sheds, load em up with machinery if you want to. Here's the looong and TIDEOUS bit of the "profit making" part. Whatever space that is left-- buy silos. You dont have to fill it up... use your best judgement, make sure you have roads etc, as if you are building a "regular" farm. Silos are important! ok.... moving forward: Click one of your fields to check out the pretty little "schedule" for it. Harvest = H , G= gladie, O = oranges, X = nothing, - = when the plant is doing its thang it should be like this X X X G-------------------- now you need to do this: G H O H O H O H O H O H O H O H O H O H, etc (until the end) you can only do this whilst your field is a plant that you can harvest early. oranges has a SET harvest date! you can also save yourself one set of orange seeds cos after the set harvest date, you don't have to plant a new orange field. rinse and repeat with the other field. now you have silos packed with oranges, or you are running low on money. play with the disasters! you can get your oranges to sky rocket in price to about 35K+. SELL EM! you make tons of money and stuff. woot. and i discovered that back in the 4th grade -.- that was.... 13 years ago -.- peace out! |

Hi! This is probably a stoppid question, but how do I water my fields? :wondering:
|
You can place irrigation ditch and add a lever or switch on them if I remember swell.
You also need water pumps/mills. Irrigation ditch can flood or drain. Must be in the toolbar somewhere. [Edit] And add some water towers also. |
Thanks for the answer! And what do I do when there's no river/lake on the landscape? Also, should I just place the irrigation ditches next to a side of the fields?

awesome game, having trouble grasping it though (one of the disadvantages of being to young to play when it was out, or was it being too addicted to R rated games)
|
So is there any chance of getting the game's manual up on here? I remember playing this way back when, and even had a basic grasp of it, but now for the life of me I can't recall how everything works.
I guess I should consider myself lucky I learned how SimCity 2000 works via the manual as a kid and then kept on playing, otherwise I'd be equally stumped. |
If you have specific questions, feel free to ask, I'm pretty sure I remember some stuff since I've been able to play it without consulting the manual whenever I re-installed the thing.
I don't have the manual with me though (abroad for work). |
Maxis classics are done to learn how to play by trying and failing until you become the best farmer of the Simnation. I can count three armed revolts when playing Sin City 2000

sound issues?
Can anyone help me configure my sound on the dosbox? It sounds really crappy when I play the sim farm game. It sounds nothing like the original and I know there is a way to change the sound. Do I have to disable my external speakers and if so, how do i do it. Also, do I need to change the sound blaster settings? How do I make it work good and how to I change settings back when I need to? You can email me at [EDITED] if you got any info, thanks!

I have a newer version of this game, for windows, along with a windows-help-browser manual.
I could type the manual so it's just a text file, but the last few manuals I've made (including 2 I wrote from scratch) are just sitting on FTP. Would be easier to just upload the interactive manual, instead. And have the windows version to download as an option, maybe? |
 Sure. :)
|
OK 5th, mate.
I'm prepping all the Simxxx stuff now, with either .pdf / win help / win-txt conversions or all the Sim games (that are called Abandonware) for upload to the site right now. The boxshots may be a but muddy, cos they're old, but someoine can find better ones of those, I'm sure. Watch my offers space in the next few weeks. |
I have been looking for a long time, does anyone have the Windows version?

no sound on win 7
I'm using windows 7 though I already have this game on dosbox... the greatest to play dos games... but unfortunately it doesn't give any sounds.. anyone can help?? thx a lot before..

Just a-wondering if anyone uploaded (or knows of a download link) for SimFarm? I found another message here -> http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=19141 from someone who talked about posting it, but have yet to see the manual anywhere on the Internet.

Since no one else has said it, you land the plane by pressing "End". "Home" toggles spraying on and off. "PgUp" and "PgDn" adjust your altitude, and you can't land the plane if you're too high up.
Now then, I've got a question of my own. Does anyone have any information about homestead upgrades, and what determines whether or not the town grows? |
I have a hard copy manual for the MSDOS version if anyone wants a copy of it.
|
Electronic copy? Me wants! Thank you.
