(The) Need For Speed Multiplayer

First things first: I have two computers on my home network (i.e. all behind a single router, all capable of sharing files), I tried searching for stuff like "Dosbox Modem" and "Dosbox Multiplayer" but without anything current. I've been trying the methods shown on this Vogons thread from 2004(!):
http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=4328
...but without any success. No matter what I try in NFS1, it always gives me "Failed to init modem" or something like that, implying that my problem isn't with the nonexistent numbers I'm giving it, but instead that the modem setup I have isn't working.

Under dosbox.conf, I've changed the serial1 setting:
Quote:

serial1=modem, 23
...and in NFS, I've changed the dial command to ATDT, the init command to ATS0=1, and I've tried using assorted Hayes models (since the Vogons thread mentioned something about Dosbox emulating Hayes modems in particular). So far, no success. Any ideas?

Check this guide:

This worked for me.

DOSBox conf
Code:

serial1=modem
Modem configuration in the game options
Code:

modem type -> custom
COM port -> COM1 (serial1=COM1, serial2=COM2, etc...)
dial string -> ATD
init string -> ATZ

Use the IP address of the host as a phone number.

Also there is a dosbox multiplayer dedicated server for several games:

Can ease things a bit ......

Thanks, I'll try that.

EDIT: Although the modem no longer comes up MIA, I can't successfully make a call between two computers behind the same router. The calling computer is a laptop, so its IP changes from time to time, but the answering computer (hopefully the server) is at 192.168.1.79. So I've been trying to call "192168179" with the laptop after hitting "answer" on the answering computer, without much success. Any ideas?

A bit late answer but...

192168179 is not the correct (phone) number, you have to include the periods.

Proof that it works:
