3D Realms preview

I was installing Terminal Velocity today. I decided to explore the cd a bit and found some interesting preview pictures of two upcoming 3D Realms games, Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warriors. If you're into gaming history like me, its fascinating stuff. Take a look.

Seems like the actual development has been interesting too. Both previews have txt files which promise the games for Christmas 1995. Duke Nukem 3D came out around summer of 1996 and Shadow Warrior about a year later.

There were also some more previews on my Duke Nukem 3D CD. Another set of Shadow Warrior and Blood. No info on them, but I think this is a standard release, so both were released about a year later when these were made. It shows too, as there's lot of similarities with final game.

There was third preview too...of Prey. Honestly it looks pretty uninteresting. Whats funny about this thing is that Prey came out 10 years later.

Prey also had TXT info. Did any of this survive to the final game?

Quote:

NOTE
Prey's story and character are still in their infancy stages. None of this
should be considered final product, just development info. We want to take
the step, since the game is about being hunted, of making the character a
Native American. The character will be a successful business person or
politician, striking against the stereotypes. While a few aspects of Native
American culture will be brought into it, it will be as part of fleshing out
the character.

STORY
You are a successful Native American, fighting for part of what were your
ancestral lands. When the ruling goes against you, you pack up your Hummer
and head out to the wilderness to contemplate your future and hope for
guidance. Suddenly, there is a blinding flash of light, your skin crawls
with electricity and you black out. You wake to find yourself in a hostile
alien environment. Strange creatures pour out of every crevice of the odd
alien architecture, firing weapons of incredible might. You must find out
how to defeat them: master the alien weapons, explore the foreboding
battlefields to uncover their secrets, and discover what part you will take
in this violent new world.

The part about the native American main character and about finding yourself in a strange alien world did survive to the final release.

I'm somewhat interested in this thread since you mentioned Duke Nukem 3D, which I consider in every way superior to more "popular" titles which got out about the same time...

The thing is... What's your point exactly? You've found those and... What?

Haha, I remember those screenies, but couldn't remember which 3D Realms CD I saw them on. Especially the Duke pictures, which still have the old enemies from Duke Nukem II transferred to 3D sprites (the soldiers with the tin hats).

As for Prey, it was supposed to come out in 1998, and back then it was revolutionary, especially the portal technology. FYI Max Payne was slated around that time too, look how long it took for them to be published. Prey was pretty much in the same development hell as DNF.

Ahh, old previews and trailers like this can really make one feel nostalgic :) These are my favorites:

Do you mean those soldiers in metal in the preview screens above? Were they replaced with those some creeps in yellow/orange and flying with jetpacks, encountered already in the first level? Strange though, I could swear I saw those soldiers in metal in the final game when playing it...
Also those screens from early Shadow Warrior development were shown already earlier in a thread here, by MrFlibble I think.

Some interesting pictures there. It is cool to look at the old advertisements they used. If I saw those pictures as a 6 year old I would have been begging my dad to buy me those games...which I did anyway.

Yup, exactly those. Think they aren't even in lame duke anymore. I remember reading something about they decided to cut a few more ties with the second game, only the basic premise of it being set after duke returns with tha spaceship remained.

Nice, thanks for sharing the suff! ^_^ I think I haven't seen some of the Shadow Wariror screenshots before, although most pre-view shots are collected at the RTCM website (which seems to have gotten down recently, as I've just found out). Some of the shots were featured on the Apogee website, I remember finding archived pages via the Wayback Machine and posting them here.

[Edit] I've just posted links to the original zipped slideshow previews of Apogee/3D Realms games here.

Just found out there's an official Windows desktop icon pack for Apogee/3D Realms' games:
http://www.3drealms.com/news/2001/02..._3d_realm.html

Here you can download a zip with the original file date on the archive: APOGICON.ZIP

Some search came up with other packs at cd.textfiles.com:
APOGICO.ZIP
APOGICON.ZIP

These two don't seem to be official, although I'm not sure about it.
