Which Linux distribution would you advise me to use on an old machine?
It's Celeron 400 with 128 megs of RAM and 4 GB HDD.
Also, a few other Linux Q's:
1. What GUI would you recommend? I like command line, sure, but it will take me a while to learn how to use it.
2. Are there any Linux ports of *Mule or any Linux-based equivalents?
3. Are there any Quake ports for this OS?

You can also use Ubuntu, but don't use the standard install. Use server install instead and install Fluxbox or Blackbox afterwards (their footprint is so much smaller then KDE's of Gnome).

Ubuntu 'Supa Small Install' HOWTO for a step-by-step guide. I run it on my Dell Latitude Cpt (cel 400, 256 mb) and it does the trick. Mind you, the Black- and Fluxbox don't offer the same eye-candy as Gnome/KDE do and may require some more tinkering, but they sure as hell take a lot less RAM :ok:

Gentoo is also a good option but takes a little longer to set up due to the compiling. If you have a 'bigger' Linux system allready you can compile on that one to speed things up a lot.

If you want a GUI which is closer to windows or OSX stick with KDE or Gnome (my preference) - if you want something a bit more streamlined then Fluxbox is groovy - my housemate's a bit of a whizz (been using Linux for years) and he uses fluxbox - it loads incredibly quickly and uses very few resources, which is a bonus on that older machine. 's not quite as user friendly for someone who's not used to using Linux, but then I suppose it forces you to get used to it :)

Just stick with the command line and use X to run programs that need X, Example: startx <where the program is>

You will need to install xorg and the x-window-manager first though if you do a server install.

Use ubuntu, free CD'S ! :)
