Getting Daggerfall to run

I've just downloaded Daggerfall and followed instructions to run it under DosBox 0.74. After the title screen, I start new game, then when I click on the map to start to generate a new character I get kicked out with an error message:

Daggerfall has encountered an internal error at 0.
The error reported was: Code: 214 not found in
Exiting...
C:\TES2\DAGGER>

I have tried to find info on what to do. Can anyone help me with this problem?
Thanks!

It means you didn't followed the instructions how to get Daggerfall running to the letter, that's why you get errors.
In other (not so friendly) words: you screwed up.
As Daggerfall is a really nitpicking game to get to run in dosbox, it's not possible to tell you were you went wrong without a long and detailled list of what you have done till now.

But luckily for you you can download a ready to run package to use with dosbox frontend DBGL@

Thank you for your help, I am looking forward to this game!

*Raises hand* I know it I know it teach!

Thank you for including the DOS prompt you see after the program crashes, because it has the answer. The installation you can download from here is to be run from the path "C:\DAGGER" (as the instructions below the review say), it causes that exact error message if run from "C:\TES2\DAGGER" or elsewhere. And if you instead installed the game anew from the CD, you have to run it every time from the same path where you installed, so the mount has to be the same when you play as when you installed.

What instructions did you follow, Bethesda's or the ones below the review?

I have installed package that and it goes only so far before dosbox crashes out.

Hi
I'm new here.I spended my life with consoles than with computers but I now I'm in love with the RPGs from the Dos-age.
Lands of Lore is my Favorite for the moment. But Iwant to try Daggerfall.
I've already installed the game.Sound, everything seems fine.Back in the Dosmenü I had to typed "dagger"
But instead of beginning the game a message says:
its not the right cd rom inside.
What have I to do?

triskelian:

The information you need should be here:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General:Pla...s_under_DOSBox

That website is really helpful, and should hopefully solve your problem!

@triskelian, did you download from here the archive you're trying to run?

As usual, we recommend DOSBox to run this game. After unzipping contents of the ZIP file, you can start the game by drag'n dropping "Dagger.bat" onto the DOSBox shortcut--but this file must remain in the same folder as the "DAGGER" sub-folder. (You needn't read any further, the rest of the information is aimed at advanced users.)

If you prefer to set things up yourself, this installation needs the game at the path "C:\dagger\". The game was supposed to be started with "dagger.exe", but since the CD is not included, enter "fall z.cfg" instead; this will skip the preliminary tests (CD, mouse, memory, file handles...) See also "DOSBox notes" below.

Hmm, this could happen because some files are missing - specifically, the video of the audience with the Emperor. Make sure you have all the files installed properly, and the folder from the Daggerfall distributive is mounted as a CD-ROM drive.
