It's a great game, indeed, but absolutely impossible to play without a manual.

never really understood those games

SimLife is a full-on simulation game, and very unlike a lot of Maxis' others.

It's not exactly a game in the way that SimCity is, but more like Flight Simulator perhaps. Except completely different. :)

As someone with a keen interest in ecology and genetics, I find it fascinating, but treat it more as an educational tool. It really helps you think about large scale ecosystems, and the interactions between physics and biology.

I've sunk quite a few hours into it, but fully realise for most people its a complete turn-off.

Luckily, our friends over at Lemon Amiga have the manual on their game page for Simlife:

Simlife Manual

(don't forget to look at the readme after installing the game - it's usually worth it for Sim games)

System Requirements

This game actually runs very well in DOSBox with Windows 3.11 installed. For those with Linux running on their machine...

I'm running on Vista. I'm running SimLife in windows 95 compatibility mode, but I keep having the same problem over and over.

My game plays fine for a while, I can save and load the file up to a point. But after 15 minutes of gameplay, if I try to save the game, then load it later, it tells me there's an error loading the game file, and it gives me an error location.

Any ideas?

Is the game placed in your own personal folders? \users\your name\game\ ?
Otherwise you'll encounter write protection restrictions in Vista.

Or run the game in Dosbox 0.73/W3.1
Some things you should read first:
http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=19982
And all you need to set up W3.x in dosbox:
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=9405

And because sooner or later peeps gonna switch to Win7: same principle, place the game in your personal folders or use dosbox.

ntvdm issue

sadly i havent been able to install this game with vista because of ntvdm.exe crashing whenever i get past 100% and the setup tries to finish installing.

can anyone provide a zip or rar with the installed game that will work in vista? i've even tried using window 95 compatibility mode and it still doesn't work :(

Use DOSBox.
