Can you tell us a bit more?

What sistem are you using (WinXP, WinME, Win9x, DOS...)?
Have you tried DOSBox (the game works fine with it)?

Well this is completely ridiculous. I have 224 MB RAM but it is telling me that my conventional memory is 570k and it must exceed 590k -- I know this somehow refers to DOS memory but my gosh with 224MB couldn't this problem somehow be solved?

That problem occurs quite often when you try to run DOS games under Windows.
Solution: download Dosbox here on Abandonia and run the game through that.

DOS uses the lower 640K of memory. Anything above 640K is expanded or extended memory(UMB). Back in the pre-Windows days we had to load anything we could in the upper memory to maintain enough available for games that need more than 512K of memory. It was done through an edit in the config.sys file.
Not knowing which Windows version you use, I can't help. Windos95 and lower handle most MS-DOS games very well.
