this is going to sound stupid, but.....i cant draw a : in dosbox, therefore not being able to get a single game to work......please, go ahead, ask questions........why the hell not, some of the keys make different ones that theyre supposed to also......the keyboard IS in english.....

Ummmmm..... you're trolling aren't you.

Anyways just to humour you - the key you are looking for is the second key to the left of the ENTER/RETURN key. Hold down the SHIFT key while you hit it and the mysterious : will appear.

Now I am completely speechless.

This is always possible but :

1) From DOSBox readme
Quote:

Q: I can't type \ or : in DOSBox.
A: This is a known problem. It only occurs if your keyboard layout isn't US.[/b]
Guest wrote ---> "the keyboard IS in english", well i'm not an expert in such things but there is the possibility that keyboard had a different "english" layout? And even if not... it can be messed up or something can be wrong (like : keyboard selled as english but it had a "wrong layout" )

2) Colonization's microgestion is going me mad... i have time to waste and i need to waste it doing something different (strange the real world uh? we always are in search of more time, but when we had it... we need to waste it  ). For this reason i think positive and give an helpfull (i hope) answer to the guest.

As i had wrote in point 1) be sure that your keyboard's layout is US, if not (but even if it appear to be US) on (or "in" ? ) DOSBox readme there is the answer :

Quote:

Some possible fixes:
1. Switch your keyboard layout.
2. Use / instead.
3. Open dosbox.conf and change usescancodes=false to usescancodes=true.
4. Add the commands you want to execute to the "configfile".
5. Start the keymapper (CTRL-F1 or add -startmapper switch to DOSBox).
6. Use ALT-58 for : and ALT-92 for \.
7. for \ try the keys around "enter". For ":" try shift and the keys
between "enter" and "l" (US keyboard layout).
8. Use keyb.com from FreeDOS (http://projects.freedos.net/keyb/).[/b]
Finally, just in case, read even the entire readme file and the various guides to DOSBox, here on Abandonia, because are filled with interesting information :)

OK, a few questions...

Where are you from? What is the standart keyboard layout you use? Did you just sqitch the layout in Windows or something?

If all else fails you can always try every single key (and then again by holding SHIFT down) and you'll see where each letter or symbol is (but be careful - use SHIFT not CAPSLOCK).

If you're actually having problems just:

Configure DOSBox so that it supports your national keyboard layout. The latest 0.70 version is the first to support this feature. Or

just consult and maybe learn the US layout. Actually some games will have the hotkeys off hand if you don't use it --X-Wing comes to mind. Here you are the US layout:

try selecting start , run and entering ' control.exe input.dll '

what is showing, is it an english keyboard ??

also try holding down the ' alt ' key and typing ' 58 ' and then releasing it as this is the ascii code so may produce the : directly

hope it helps !
