Installation of Wizardry VII Crusaders of the Dark Savant ISO

When going through the download and installation process I was redirected to
"HERE" in the description of the download.

"HERE" refers to:

http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2251&view=findpost&p=44074

Which led to... well ... just the outer page of the forums.

SOOOOOOOOo....... I took the following approaches and every time I got the same error as follows first.

Error received:

Wizardry CD-ROM installation
Error in _dos_getfreedisk() call

Approach 1: "Burn ISO directly to CD then Install from that CD."

1) Burned the ISO to the CD as per normal ISO burns.

2) Ran install from windows.

3) No result and immediate dump-out of a "dos" window.

4) Ran DOSBox.

5) Followed standard DOSBox procedure for going to the CD-ROM

6) Did a "DIR" to verify the files, all was in order.

7) Tried the install and go the error above.

Approach 2: "Install using Virtual Clone Drive to mount the ISO while it remained on the Hard Disk."

1) Run Virtual Clone Drive

2) Mount the ISO as a clone drive

3) Repeat all steps from "2)" above.

4) Same error.

Any hints on installing this game?

dosbox:
make directory dosgames on C and place the iso in there (wiz.iso called hence)
Code:

mount c c:\dosgames
c:
imgmount d wiz.iso -t iso
d:
install

And now...

I mount the installed stuff as the CD rom to make it run?

It says its "System Error: Unable to Open Scenario. HDR"

Once I get this game running I will post a detailed guide as to how I did it so that people can really actually find it in one single place.

what did you type ?

Pre-installed version. I still didn't add a documentation about what I changed, but I doubt you would want to read it anyway. :amused:

This is not the original game, the game was released on floppy disks. I have the original disks with manuals, docs, etc. I don't remember if this game was ever released as a "Classic CD " game or not, but it kinda sounds like the disks or install was burned onto a cd and then burned as an ISO image. If you locate the uploader to find out what their source was would be a big plus.
It might be a bad burn too, it happens. --:)

Works fine for me. Install instructions are included in the README.BAT file in the ISO.
Installing is a bit different from other games, as you "play" from the CD / ISO. Only savegame data is written to the hard drive.

1.) burn ISO to CD / mount ISO in demon tools
2.) start DOSBox
3.) mount hard drive and cdrom drive
example: MOUNT C C:\DOSGAMES
MOUNT D X:\ -t cdrom (where X is the letter of your cdrom in windows or demon tools
4.) change to D:
5.) install game using INSTALL.EXE
6.) change to W7 directory on D:\
7.) start the game with PLAY.BAT

copyprotection codes are included in the root directory of the CD

Öhm, pff.. that could be another possibility of course.. :DOSBOX: rulez!

Anyway, the important point is to run the game from the wherever mounted CD drive.
