I remember there was some sort of game, there were 2 teams, each with their own ships, they went from small and crap to big and powerful.

I remember one as a planet sized spaceship that shot out mini fighters.

Some ship that teleported...........another that shot out gasses.

Each ship had their own special abilities.

Anyone remember it?

Hopefully the game i remember supports CPU play...because i always was playing with friends.

This one is a remake that will work on newer systems and even has speech.

OMG I love Ur-Quan Masters.. (and obviously Star Control II)

It's a perfect remake.. Tons and tons and hours upon hours of fun... This game can take a really long time to play...

I never played the original, but after trying the remake available on sourceforge, it is a very funny game, some of the alien encounters are frankly hilarious.

The combat part is very difficult though, especially on the beginning when you travel in hyperspace and encounter some of those nasty enemies with your near to be useless ships.
Later as you equip it a bit better you will stand more chances.

But fighting some of the robots (which race name eludes me) in the beginning from a hyperspace encounter s a nightmare.

"Small and crap", eh? I used to like to play with the little round saucer ship. It was small and fast, and I pretty much ruled with it.
