7-Zip instead of ZIP or RAR?

Dear forum team,

thanks for the great community. I read about plans to change from ZIP to RAR. I think thatīs a gread idea because it safes ressources and RAR files can be opened by many systems that are able to run DOSbox and ScummVM.

Did you consider using 7-Zip instead of RAR? 7-Zip is free, can be opened and created by any system that can use DOXbox and ScummVM and it can save even more ressources. The bigger the game, the bigger the advantage of 7-Zip can be. The original WinRAR can also open 7-Zip-files. So for the end-user there is no difference between 7-Zip and RAR.

In fact, we did decide to use 7-Zip a couple weeks ago and now are in the process of replacing larger archives on the site with 7Z ones.

But can WinRAR open 7Z files?

Both can open each other's format. 7-Zip can't create new RARs and that's all.

WinRAR can't create 7z either, only open. So they're symmetric.

What I don't know is if some updaters are uploading 7z and others rar... Sticking to a single format (besides legacy zip) would be best, in my opinion.

I thought I let evedryone know that 7-zip is freeware and Winrar is shareware which is $29.95 to register.

I took what I had on FTP and sent that to the downloadable section.
It just happened to be a Rar file.

If it's gonna be 7z next time, on the FTP, I'll use that.

Hummm. I got WinRar on my system since about what, 10 years? Never paid a dime for it.

I would never pay something for such a tool which should be common to all computers either. There is many other free options.

besides, 7z zips better, but i don't like the ugly interface, which reminds me of windows 95 ... so far i remain with winrar. don't care about the few seconds or mb ;) we live in 2012 hehe :perv:

I stopped using 7Zip because it started giving me too many errors on working archives. I have WinRar preinstalled with my Windows copy so whatever.
