Second only to Pong as the game that indoctrinated me to gaming. Probably took more of my money than any other game except pinball. I haven't played this in decades.

What a bizarre version of DK! This seems to deviate so much more from the original arcade version, moreso than any other official port of DK that I've ever played.

The reason that it is called Donkey Kong is because of a translation problem. It is supposed to be Monkey Kong. And by the way it is Mario, not a look a like.

Actually the whole it was a translation error was disproven by Shigeru Miyamoto, it was more or less along the lines that the name Donkey Kong stuck and sounded better than Monkey Kong.

Some info from Wikipedia:

Donkey Kong was created by Nintendo's game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. He believed "donkey" meant "stupid" in English, and assumed the name would convey the sense "stupid ape" to an American audience. When he suggested this name to Nintendo of America, he was laughed at, but the name stuck. The validity of this story, as well as others, has been disputed.

Yup seen that already, here's another link that breaks it down much more than the wikipage does.

There's also the obvious copyright problems with calling the game "King Kong". I think it was on the DVD for "King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters" where I saw that Miyamoto thought Donkey Kong translated to 'stubborn ape', which is all too appropriate.

Ok, I'm confused.

Should there be something other than a .img file in the download? Or am I missing something.

The Fifth Horseman 18-04-2008 04:23 PM

The IMG file is a floppy image. Which you can mount in DOSBox using IMGMOUNT.
