Lately, when I download games the .zip archives arrive empty. The size while downloading seems fine, though.
Any idea what the problem might be?

Do you have the latest version of the unarchiver/archiver program?

DeathDude 04-04-2005 08:47 PM

Yeah I had a similar problem once, but when I upgraded my winrar, those went away.

Raven 04-04-2005 08:50 PM

I'm using Powerarchiver 9.20.07, which is a quite recent version as far as I'm aware of. I used to use WinZip and WinRar but those gave me the same problems. I figured it was because they were expired trial versions. (Even though they have been expired for months with only a message at startup and no problems to show for it)

A possible cause of the problem might be some anti-leeching protection of Abandonia, because I don't click on advertisements on download pages?
I would click them, if I could. For some reason the ads rarely appear.

DeathDude 04-04-2005 08:53 PM

Don't think it's that with the anti leeching, winrar is nice because when the trial expires, you can still continue to use it after the evaluation period is over.

Do you save them or try ty open them directly? I've had this problem when I tried to directly open files. Try to save them to your disk and then opening!

Not just here - always do that, you might need them later and a temp folder is NOT fun to search through, unless you're a masochist.

Hey, a man's gotta have a hobby ;)

Anyway, it's probably the opening-directly bit.
That presents the next problem:
I can't save the files. When I click the "Get it" button it gets opened directly and denies me the choice of saving it to disk. There must be some option I can not find thanks to my technical ineptitude...

DeathDude 04-04-2005 09:20 PM

Which browser are you using?

Raven 04-04-2005 09:26 PM

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0

BeefontheBone 04-04-2005 09:29 PM

Well, there's your problem :D

Seriously, try right clicking on the "get it!" button, a download manager like GetRight or a better browser like FireFox. or both.

DeathDude 04-04-2005 09:31 PM

You could try going to tools-internet options click the advanced tab and click restore defaults.

You could try reinstalling internet explorer, by going to the add/remove panel and clicking on repair it

Raven 04-04-2005 09:32 PM

Rightclicking, huh. Why didn't I think of that?

Wait, I did. Didn't work. IE treats the button as an image, not a link.

Firefox? Is that freeware? Do you know off-hand where to get it?

Thanks for the great help so far!

You guys rock.

DeathDude 04-04-2005 09:33 PM

Yeah firefox is freeware, get it at

www.mozilla.org

It's on the front page the download link.

Raven 04-04-2005 09:38 PM

okay, getting it now.

The weird thing is that I can save any file, except Abandonia games afaik. Or maybe it's Powerarchiver hijacking zip-file downloads..
Mneh. Where's the good old days when things were simple? Except for manually editing autoexec.bat, config.sys and memorising soundcard settings and EMS, XMS...

DeathDude 04-04-2005 09:40 PM

Meh it could be the program, but it shouldn't be doing that, I agree things have changed a lot from those days, but whatever.

Raven 04-04-2005 09:52 PM

Woo, awesome!

Al my problems are solved with Firefox. Thanks, guys (and gals)!

DeathDude 04-04-2005 10:12 PM

Cool glad to hear it.

Unknown Hero 04-04-2005 10:27 PM

I am too late, but your problem was that you once selected the option 'Always do this action' or 'Don't ask me again', so you couldn't save the files only open them.

Raven 05-04-2005 01:43 PM

Only the gods know why I clicked that option :not_ok:

I just couldn't find a way to undo it <_<

Unknown Hero 05-04-2005 06:27 PM

I never clicked it so never needed to search how to turn it off....so I can't help you anymore.
