I think the site should be more DOS friendly. What i mean is that we have all sorts of modern programs that more or less emulate the dos environment, but we lack pure DOS applications. We should add more DOS apps.I can supply many dos apps, and even DOS install kits, and bootable diskettes
Also i would like to ask that all packages on the site be archived with ace, and not with somekind of installer. The problem with installers is that they cannot be excecuted in DOS environment.I happen to have a DOS only comp and i can't install almost all of the underdogs games because they were packed using an installer.I believe some games on Abandonia have already been packed using an installer.

Which games are that? From all the games I downloaded here so far, they were all in ZIP format...

Can't tell, my dos games CDs contain archives both form HotU ( :tomato: ) and from abandonia. But i'm quite sure i dl a game from abandonia and it was packed using installer.Anyway i could be wrong. The idea is to keep it Dos friendly :ok:

I'm not the biggest expert on DOS itself but can't you installl/extract under windows and then run the game from DOS?

I already said that i am runing the games from a DOS only comp. This means that i don't have Windows installed at all(that would take up precious conventional memory)
The down side is that if i want to install a game from the underdogs i have to remove the old hdd, and install it on my other comp(where i have windows installed). This wouldn't have been necessary if the underdogs would be a serious abw site.A serious abw site respects the nature of dos games and makes them available for both OS(win and dos).By packing games with windows installers, HotU neglects the nature of DOS games, and makes them available only for people using DOS BOX.
I hope you got my point

Yes, I see what you mean. It would make sense if we are distributing DOS games to put them in a DOS friendly format. :D

DOS is always going to be better than DosBox so we shouldn't really target games at DosBox, that should just be a good alternative to DOS for those who have trouble running or using DOS.

Is there a way of archiving the files that will work on both DOS and Windows, the problem being that it's quite tricky, though perfectly possible, to run DOS installation programs in DosBox?

Exactly!

Hey, no flame here. http://forum.giga.de/forum/images/smilies/irked.gif :D
As far as I know, we put the games in the ZIP format, and that only needs the unzip.exe for Dos to extract them. So unless you can prove that on our site are games that use installer...

Omuletzu 10-12-2004 01:30 PM

ahhh  :wall:
1)There's no flame here!Where did you get this idea???
2)I said that the site should keep the games DOS friendly, because i don't want the site to end up like the Underdogs(a collection of dos games available only for those who use DOS BOX)
That is all that i'm saying, nothing more, nothing less!

As far as I know, GTA uses win installer, cuz you have to install the game after unzipping it! Still there's an .exe file to run a game un DOS
