If there's anyone else out there like me who has a 56k or above connection and is running xp with sp2 you should check out this site.

http://www.testmy.net

I recently upgraded to a 1mbs connection, and browsing became like lightning, but downloads still didn't seem any faster (25kbs max). I tested my connection at this site, and it showed i was only running at 25% of my potential. But after taking 5 minutes to follow their tips, i was up to 91% and flying!!! (Now i average about 200kbs :ok: )

It's mostly because of a limit SP2 places on the maximum number of connections your pc can make at once. SP2 restricts it to 10 connections at a time, but normally you'd be allowed upto 50,000!

It boosted my online gaming as well. Playing FPS became alot easier. :sniper:

Even if you think your connection is doing just fine, take 20 seconds to try their download test, it might shock you.

Before anyone asks, no i'm not affiliated with that site, in any way. But i just couldn't believe how much of an improvement it made, for the sake of a couple of minutes. :w00t:

Bottom Line: You are running: 92 times faster than 56K and can download 1 megabyte in 1.63 second(s)*
Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 82.18 % faster than the average for host (cgocable.ca)

Note:Your speed should be within the blue for your connection type. If you score higher... SMILE!

:D

Mad-E-Fact 18-03-2005 09:28 AM

I knew I had to good reason not to get SP2. :D

Morbid_Pathologist 18-03-2005 11:04 AM

blah, SP2 had been the worst idea since WindowsXP (for the sheer fact that it didnt have DOS), it screws up my laptop so badly though, if i install it (long story as to why i had to) the laptop fan goes insane if i do the slightest thing, like play a song or watch a movie, it literally took 20 minutes to completely load up windows, my leet dialup went from 5kb/s to 3kb/s, so after sending much hatemail to microsoft, i deleted SP2, and since then, ive been happy....except for the fact that the damn soundcard doesnt work anymore and needs replacing along with the entire damn motherboard, ahh!

Here is what I found on this,

Quote:

Windows XP SP2 limits the number of possible TCP connection attempts per second to 10 from an unlimited number in SP1. This can affect performance on server and P2P programs that need to open many outbound connections at the same time. Notes - With the new implementation, if a P2P or some other network program attempts to connect to 100 sites at once, it would only be able to connect to 10 per second, so it would take it 10 seconds to reach all 100. In addition, even though the setting was registry editable in SP1, it is now only possible to edit by changing it directly in the system file tcpip.sys. Keep in mind this is a cap only on incomplete outbound connect attempts per second, not total connections. Servers and P2P programs can definitely be affected by this new limitation. Use the fix as you see fit.
Keep in mind I have no idea how reliable this information is, there are a lot of sites out there that print a lot of none-sence about MS for reasons of their own. Source

On a Dutch forum I trust this problem has been discussed and it does appear real. There are some hacks to lift the restriction but do not attempt this unless you know what you are doing.

Gotta love campus network when it works. :)
Download: 4.5 stars
Your connection is: 2719 Kbps (about 2.7 Mbps)
You downloaded at: 332 kB/s
Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 88.3 % faster than the average for host (bgsu.edu)

Upload: 4.5 stars
Your connection is: 1220 Kbps (about 1.2 Mbps)
You uploaded at: 149 kB/s
Diagnosis: 90% + Okay : running at 100 % of your hosts average (bgsu.edu)

I'll test it at home with my cable network to see how it compares.

TheSmyth 18-03-2005 01:07 PM

I downloaded and used the software that they recommend in the forums over there, and it worked fantastically for me.

The Picard is right though, to fix it you need a hack to replace your tcpip.sys

The program they suggest worked fine for me, and it makes a backup of the file it replaces. So you could always go back if something did happen to go wrong.

DeathDude 18-03-2005 01:37 PM

Hmmm, interesting site, gotta try it when I get back home.

DonCorleone 18-03-2005 02:16 PM

What program did you use? I tried TCP Optimizer from speedguide.net first which was linked by testmy.net. But the result was far from being good. My connection speed was much slower than before.
After that I tried cablenut with settings from vanburen. And it improved my connection speed a little bit. Think I will try the settings for advanced users when I got the time...

But I think I will try being a little more careful in the future... :D

Danny252 18-03-2005 05:43 PM

Upload and Download speed: 7kbps
as usual... well, technically its 7.4, thankyou very much mr. inaccurate site. god.

taikara 19-03-2005 12:23 AM

sweet, running at five stars :D :Brain:

433kB/s :ok:

troop18546 19-03-2005 11:54 AM

:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Connection is:: 138 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)
Download Speed is:: 17 kB/s
Test Time:: Sat Mar 19 14:48:58 UTC+0200 2005
Bottom Line:: 2X faster than 56K 1MB download in 60.24 sec
Diagnosis: 90% + Okay : running at 100 % of your hosts average (91.92)

:::.. Upload Stats ..:::
Connection is:: 118 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 14 kB/s
Test Time:: Sat Mar 19 15:00:04 UTC+0200 2005
Bottom Line:: 2X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 73.14 sec

Is this normal? :blink:
Or is it crap?

Download is only 1/2 of a star.
Upload is only 1 star.

TheSmyth 19-03-2005 12:13 PM

To fix the TCPIP.SYS problem i used the file i've attached. The best info is in the forums that they have. More info than just what they have in their links.

I didn't bother with cablenut, so i can't comment on it.

troop18546 19-03-2005 12:27 PM

Do I need this patch? :blink:

Yamcha 19-03-2005 12:41 PM

So, its my Inet connection good?

troop18546 19-03-2005 12:43 PM

Ofcourse. Mine sucks compared to yours. :cry:

Yamcha 19-03-2005 12:44 PM

Oh, Than im happy :)

troop18546 19-03-2005 12:45 PM

I'm not. :angry:

Yamcha 19-03-2005 12:48 PM

And how do I boost it?

troop18546 19-03-2005 12:49 PM

Beats me. :whistle: I'd want to do it myself... :cry:

xoopx 19-03-2005 04:38 PM

i dont think ill ever update to sp2.

i did notice a while back in the 'steam' statistics, most people were still running sp1

on a tangent, i dont think ill ever update WINDOWS again. the 'improvements' just seem to suck worse every time. so ill use xp as it is, until they actually make something BETTER.

Eagle of Fire 19-03-2005 04:45 PM

That's exactly what I was thinking when I was using Windows 98SE for so long... Until they made XP and I noticed it was actually better built and that I could use DOSBox to play old games.

I'm probably stuck with XP now for a very long time.

Titan 20-03-2005 12:26 PM

I realy don't get that test... for me it's off by ALOT... and i meen A L O T.
Shows that i have 3 Mbit...

took another test with a 100 MByte file, and got 9.6 Mbit..

And with my own experience, i've got even a little more then the last test showed.. so i think there are limitations on the server-side also..

TheSmyth 21-03-2005 11:39 AM

If you go to the test page, you'll notice there's a link to a couple of mirror sites, Try a few and it should give you a more accurate test. :ok:

As for tweaking your connection: http://testmy.net/topic-2097

Quote:

Well if you cant reach 90% of your ISP advertised speed you might have a problem.

Luckely that problem can be fixed in most cases by tweaking your windows registry.

There are alot of tweak programs out on the internet, too bad not all does the job right.

When you need help with tweaking then add these things in your post.

1. What OS are you running, ex win 98, win xp, if you have XP make sure you have SP2 installed! Also download the p2p fix for SP2 here http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497

If you have a MAC try this program http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12591

2. What service do you have, what is the advertised speed for download/upload.
3. What tweakprograms you already got installed, and run this test http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks* copy and paste result URL* adress in your post!
4. What speed do you have against www.testmy.net and http://nitro.ucsc.edu/* also download this Tracert and Ping program (made by PHP ) http://testmy.net/forum/index.php?action=d...=3341.0;id=1352 and click on autocheck.exe, when its done, just right click and paste all the result in your post.
5. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.
6. Open Internet Explorer and select tools - internet options - connections -
LAN settings, make sure nothing there is checked.
7. Never Connect to modem via USB ! Always connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it depend on the ISP service unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL. If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.
8. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 30 seconds.
9. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot http://beam.to/spybotsd and Ad Aware http://www.lavasoft.com/support/download to remove any spyware
10. ZoneAlarm firewall has known problems with dropping speed, i suggest to uninstall it and compare speed
11. Install Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com\ or Sygate Firewall http://www.sygate.com/
12. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one, AVG is great http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
13. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates
14. Download and run CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/
15. Go to Guides* "VanBuren TestMy.net Cablenut settings" and install Cablenut 4.08 and Vanburens cablenut settings version 6 http://www.testmy.net/topic-1013
16. If you choose to build your own tweakfile with j79zlr´s webpage, i suggest to leave SynAttackProtect to 0, and use a latency value between 150 and 300 ms. If your calculated TcpWindowSize is above 65535 and your webrowsing seem sluggish, i suggest to test with a TcpWindowSize and GlobalMaxTcpWindowsize that is 44 x ( your MSS value ) and change Tcp13230pts to 0.
