I made this forum because I own a PDA (iPaq rx3715 to be exact) and want to share some knowledge about it and especially programs for PDA's. You can discuss every kind of PDA you want, even mobile phones with PDA capabilities, it does not have to be a Pocket PC.
Best thing would be if we could compile a database of free software available for PDA's free software is what abandonia is all about.

quatroking 14-02-2005 05:34 PM

uhh... what IS a PDA?
(maybe Panda Defeated by the Americans?)

TheVoid 14-02-2005 06:23 PM

PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant. It's a small portable computer, that you can easily hold in a hand.
For further informations, have a look at this site.

quatroking 14-02-2005 06:27 PM

So... just a assistant...
(i think that its no assistant as like in Megaman Battle Network!)
That will be cost many $!!!

Tulac 14-02-2005 07:45 PM

I think that PDA's are dying. They will be replayed by multi purpose mobile phones, or will it be the other way?

Titan 15-02-2005 11:38 AM

I own a smartphone :) YAY (Motorola A925)

DonCorleone 15-03-2005 10:26 PM

Where exactly is the difference between smartphones and pdas? Or better: What makes a smartphone a smartpone...?

Eagle of Fire 15-03-2005 10:35 PM

I'm no expect in cell phones, but I think a "smart" phone is any second generation phone. Those who allow you to go on the internet to grab your emails, who have calendar and stuff like that.

The Niles 16-03-2005 07:37 AM

You know what a phone is and what it does. Any phone that has functions beyond that can be called a "smart" phone. Mostly though, smart phones are those phones that allow you to manage your scedule write and read your email and browse the internet.

DonCorleone 16-03-2005 09:38 AM

Ah I see. So would you call the N-Gage a smartphone, too?

Titan 16-03-2005 01:12 PM

Well.. in a way, yes.

But calling ANY phone that can go on the net and get emails a smartphone, is going too faar, since almost any new phn can do that today.
Generaly i think that you know it when you got it.
Installing programs should be one criteatia, aswell as some for of qwerty-keyboard.

Smartphone is the combination of a PDA and phone, so go imagen ;)

The Niles 16-03-2005 01:31 PM

PDA's generally don't have keyboards at all (you can connect one always but not build in). For me a keyboard is not a requirement for a smart phone. Being able to install 3rd party applications is a good criteria.

A category of mobile device that provides advanced capabilities beyond a typical mobile phone. Smartphones run complete operating system software that provides a standardized interface and platform for application developers.

By the strict definition, smartphones are distinct from PDA-based devices running operating systems such as Palm OS or Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs. While PDA-based devices usually have a touch-screen for pen input, smartphones usually have a standard phone keypad for input.

Compared to standard phones, smartphones usually have larger displays and more powerful processors.

Applications written for a given smartphone platform can usually run on any smartphone with that platform, regardless of manufacturer. Compared to Java or BREW applications, native smartphone applications usually run faster and integrate more tightly with phone hardware.

The two major smartphone platforms are Series 60 (by Nokia) and Windows Mobile for Smartphones (by Microsoft).

I think my maths teacher last year had a PDA... he had great fun putting all our test resulkts in ^^

Titan 17-03-2005 12:29 AM

Well, i just know that my Moto A925 (and the A920 and A1000) uses a qwerty-keyb. on the screen, where you write by either pushing the letters with your pen, or simply use the free-hand option that translates your writing into letters.
The Moto A925 uses UIQ-system, as do the SE P8/9xx-series.

Touch-secitive screens are a must realy, as other input-devices would be just too bulky.
Shure, you can always use a BlueTooth keyboard or mouse (if supported), but you need to carry that around also....

Hello, I know something you can use to play LEC adventure games on a Pocket PC. I don't know if it just works on a Pocket PC but it's the only PDA thing I have. It's like ScummVM but it's called ScummPocket. It works almost the same but the load/save and options thong is down the bottom. I'll look for a screenshot. I don't know where to download it. I'll look for a link later.

Maybe you're talking about this link?

Bobbin Threadbare 08-07-2005 12:17 PM

Heh, never knew the ScummVM ppl made it.

I have PDA...don't use it much....PD's are going to die, and give in to portable gaming devices like PSP's and NintendoDS, Nintendo DS for example already has wi fi chatting, so internet probly isn't that far from the future...

What game is that?

McKack 10-07-2005 06:58 AM

Don't you recognize Monkey Island, man?

Bobbin Threadbare 10-07-2005 07:46 AM

Yes I recognize Monkey Island. I thought it was Monkey 2 at first though I wasn't quite sure. It looks like the Scbb Island beach. I think. It's just a little small and the image has a glare on it that's all. :D

McKack 10-07-2005 10:56 AM

Well actually I'm not sure myself now if it's 1 or 2, long since I took that image (you noticed it is clickable btw?) and long since I've played the game. But as long as you saw it was A Monkey Island game it's all good :)

Bobbin Threadbare 10-07-2005 12:04 PM

Sorry, I didn't notice it was a clickable. It is what I thought it was the MI2 Scabb Island beach. Ahh, good times.
*flashback*
Damn flashbacks, they always make nauseated!

Like i said in another topic, exist already a linux porting for the Nintendo DS! And they are starting to work on a Windows porting...

The Niles 10-07-2005 02:08 PM

PDA's are a portable computer and PSP and the like are portable consoles. There is room for both. Bussinessmen need the power of the PDA to run a diverse set of programs (and maybe a few games), kids like to play games and have little use for the rest of the things a PDA offers. Alse the most expensive portable console would set you back $250, while the cheapest PDA is about the same price and the most expensive can go up to $700.

The PDA and the portable console are not each others rivals and never will be. Different people buy them. The interresting developments for PDA's are smartphones. Some see this as a threat to PDA's but I see it more as an oppertunity. Obviously people are asking for the extra power of a smartphone over the normal abbilities of phones. Developers of PDA's need to do more to cater to that wish.

Bobbin Threadbare 10-07-2005 03:04 PM

PocketPC is 10x better then Nintendo DS.
Nintendo DS: Instant messaging ove a small area radius.
PocketPC: MSN messenger. Worldwide baby!
Pocket PC has better games (in my opinion).
Does Nintendo DS have watching The Simpsons capabilities? NO.

McKack 10-07-2005 11:33 PM

What about this Gizmondo thing, anyone tried it?

mm_pie 18-07-2005 07:25 PM

I own a Moto MPx220 and recently installed the opera browser on it. Even the free version is far better than the rubbish that came with it.
GO MOTOROLA! :w00t: :Brain:

I think I can clear this up, A Smart Phone is a cross between a PDA and a Cell phone, as you guys already esablished that point.
Smart phones are mostly made by cell phone companies aka; moto, nokia.
However they must be able to run applications, like Microsoft Office.
So I will mention each points in small detail.

The phone part:
~For a smart phone you must be able to use all over the world hense a world phone.

The Smart Part
~ Must have WIFI, an operating system, bluetooth, good memory, and must have expandable memory.
~ Must be able to load software...
and some even have cameras

And on the point of the NIntendo DS there is a little piece of hardware called Movie advance and lets you play movies, MP3's, read e-books, and lets you look at pictures if i remeber correctly, though its acctually built for the GBA. and with th Ds' WIFI soon the will be game ie. Mario Kart DS which you can play against people for all over the world, and there is a port of Linus for the DS so you might be able to use the internet, possabily even firefox.

I think thats all I have to say.

Woot first post on page 3 :Brain:

win98 27-09-2005 07:23 PM

well i hate to break it but the next generation ofphones are here o yeah baby

StaaViinsZ 26-09-2013 09:47 AM

Ha, PDA's.
They were always so cool, but every one I've ever had I've lost.
Besides, mine were some kid's brand like Spider-Man anyway.
Well, not that Spider Man is for kids. And not that Franchised PDA's aren't still ultra awesome. But that's not my point.

Anybody ever use the Sega Dreamcast's PDA compatiblility? That's what I hate about PDA's. Not enough people buy them, and they go obsolete quicker than a Iphone.
On top of that, almost no one supports them, either with the machines they build, the OS's they make, or with actual tech support.
After all, there is a reason why there isn't
"Padbandonia, the home for classic PDA software!"
I have always liked PDA'S so much, but they seem like one of those underground areas of computing. With SmartPhones and Kindles already so much better, the next PDA would be a Smartphone!
I made this post from my Kindle. Heh.
