I know I'm probably doing something really stupid for it not to be working but can't figure out what!

Calm down a bit, will ya?You can't install a game in Windows and then run it within dosbox. If you want tto use the CD you MUST install it also IN dosbox.
Forget your CD for now and try first with the AB game. You may delete the previous CD wininstall, the params are wrong. And also delete the AB game folder, it's screwed up anyway, start from scratch.

First step whilst IN Windows:
Create a folder: c:\oldgames
Extract the dominus folder inside the AB archive to c:\oldgames so that you get c:\oldgames\dominus\,
careful, NOT c:\oldgames\dominus\dominus\.
If you have some mounts in your dosboxconfig under [autoexec] delete them.

Next:
Run dosbox and input:

mount c c:\oldgames
c:
cd dominus
dom

If you follow those instructions the game WILL WORK.
Do NOT run install with the AB game, it is pre configured to use with dosbox. No CD needed.

I'd really like this game, but starting it doesn't work.

I've clicked all the executables, and they just open up a black screen and close immediately.

Does anyone have problems similar to mine?

That is at the very least advisable.
