I've read that Electronic Arts is starting to sell their games by Internet.
Obviously the other distributors will follow that example, so, what do you think about that?

I don't like it :not_ok: , I like to buy a game in a big box, maybe full with books and stupid gadgets (do you remember Warcraft II with the stupendous manual and a block-notes? :kosta: ).
Am I the only who didn't buy "Bone: out of Boneville" or other games, just due to that reason?

And I think that the distributors could use that system to fill the games downloaded with spyware...

SupSuper 15-11-2005 07:13 PM

I don't like it because:
1. I can't buy stuff online.
2. I'd have to download it, which would take FOREVER!
3. Everytime my disk was wiped, it's download time again! <_<

Plus if they take as long as HL2 to install... :not_ok:

efthimios 15-11-2005 07:35 PM

I like it when it is done like how Stardock operates with its totalgaming.net which means I can buy and download the game, no copy protection so that I can make copies on cd just in case, no stupid keys, and (in theory) if I need to download a game again (lost the HD and CDs for example), I can no matter how long it has passed.

There are plenty of other companies that let you buy and download full games, but always come with a catch, like you need to be online to play the game, or the game is somehow copy protected, or you can only re download the game after X amount of days! Usualy the are all together, and to them I say $#@%@*%^! :-)

Then there is the third way, like HL2 where they have managed to combine every bad thing in one package and ruin (FOR ME) the game, thus not buying it.

Blood-Pigggy 15-11-2005 07:38 PM

Me like Steam lots. :D

If they just do it that way, it'll be fine.
I mean, I can still play the games anywhere I want, as long as I have my account.

Danny252 15-11-2005 08:25 PM

Noo! Me likey CDs! Let me have the CDs!
Plus, you can't give people games as birthday or christmas presents! Its hard NOT to notice someone downloading 2GBs of games for xmas...

Mr.Snuggles 15-11-2005 08:40 PM

I couldn't live with games without boxes, unless they are Old games.

Doubler 15-11-2005 08:42 PM

I love to get something more then just 'the game'. That's just cheap.
I can't pay through the internet anyway.
And I don't trust the internet enough for it, either.

I really hope this doesn't become the new trend :not_ok:

mouse31e 15-11-2005 08:48 PM

I think it's a great idea. It's much easier for me as I don't have time to go shopping and I can get any game I want on demand rather than having to order it and wait for delivery.

On the subject of boxes - Most games don't come in a proper box anymore and very few have a decent manual. The only games that I have bought in the last few years that I would recommend getting in the boxed edition are the Grand Theft Auto games.

With internet connections getting faster (it won't be that long until many people have 16 & 32mbps connections with average download speeds between 1.6 & 3.2mbps - imagine what you could download with that!) I think it is the logical step forward and I wouldn't need to find space to store all the DVD-style cases - I could just having everything backed up on CD's that take much less space.

And I've never had any problems with internet payments in 5 years of regularly paying for things online.

Doubler 15-11-2005 08:53 PM

The question is, can you pay without creditcard or paypall?

And pure internet delivery (Which is very likely to be the consequence of succesfull internet delivery) negates all chances of getting cool goodies with games.
And I've never been able to read a single online manual, either. While I've read all paper ones multiple times.

No. But the majority of people either can pay by these methods or know someone who would be happy to do it for them and take the cash!

Yes, but you very rarely get them anyway these days - and in most paper manuals now the details are very brief and fairly useless.

EDIT: I used to like having all my music on CD's because I like to have the inlays and the cover art but now I only apply that to albums I really want. The majority of my music is delivered digitally - saving me roughly half the money and a lot of effort!

Tulac 15-11-2005 09:48 PM

I don't care for the box, nor for the (un)safe payment, but I need CD/DVDs for archiving my HD is only 40GB anyway, but even if I had a greate HD and faster internet connection, I wouldn't want that...

wade 486DX266 LAPTOP 16-11-2005 04:00 AM

I like the boxes plus there are a million spyware "MEEPS" on my Hdd so i like the idea of cathin the bus down the street when ur bored and buyin a game.
PLUS the older 1 dollar dos games ALWAYS come in boxes.
There are always a millioin dos cd games there for a few buks
oops :ot:

Nikson 16-11-2005 04:31 AM

I want the boxes :D and the manuals. Yeah, some games come with little 10-page leaflets they call manuals, but others still have neat stuff in the box. And I really like that.
That and having the game CDs with those pretty drawings on them.

 True, very true :D

I wouldn't buy games that way 'cause, on my 3.92 GB hard, it's becomes almost impossible to keep install kits on it, so the digital delivery in my opiniion :not_ok:
(Also I can't buy games due to the lack of money  )

Sean 16-11-2005 03:16 PM

I think its a nice option to have but I personally prefer having a box... it makes my purchase more 'real' for me. If I can touch it take it where I want and what not it feels a lot more personal than if it is simply a downloaded file.

Agree with you there. I never bother to read (or find) PDF / HTML manuals included in games, but always use the paper ones as bedtime reading :)

And even though I was one of the few people that actually bought HL2 on DVD, I still had to wait forever for it to install, check all its protections, update, etc, etc just because it used Steam. I can't imagine how much longer it'd take just downloading if I got it through Steam.

Plus, digitally delivered games aren't as easy to borrow, lend, offer as gifts or just plain show off :bleh: And no connection is "ultra" enough to get today's games which are GBs in size in some minutes, which is how long it takes me to go to the store and buy a game. Specially since it also depends on the distance between server and user and how hogged the server's connection is with all the downloads.

#4 mainly.

moogle 17-11-2005 02:07 AM

I dislike it, and think its a verry dumb idea.
1.Dls take FOREVER
2.You never know if the site your looking at is fake
3.It doesn't discourage pirating, it encourages is, for example, I could go into the Guild Wars website and dl the game, then, using a friends account, I could play it for free, I wouldn't need to buy the game or anything
4.The Box is cool
5.NO MANUAL, ok so theres probly a .pdf file, but come on, it just isn't the same
6.Not everyperson who buys games has a credit card, I don't but I still play and buy games.

I agree with you, 310%.
