Mmm, two updates today? It's a good game tho' :D .

ReamusLQ 11-10-2005 11:46 PM

well, according to the sites clock, it's tomorrow already, and I have to update to that so <shrug> you're just lucky like that I guess!

Blood-Pigggy 11-10-2005 11:47 PM

How can that be according to the site's clock?
On the front page it still has the same date. :D

I don't mind though, in fact, I'm enjoying this two in one.

EDIT: Nevermind, that's strange, it said 11 before.

maybe you just read it wrong :ok: But yes, it is a good game.

I accidently pressed the one button when I went to give it a score.
I played this awhile ago, so I was going to give it a 4 because of past good experiences, now I just brought down the score considerably.

Oops.

AmigaFanboy 12-10-2005 06:25 AM

I still have this for Amiga(if only the dang thing worked) it gives me a wonderful bit of nastalga to play this game again... I recall the graphics being a lot better on the Amiga, however(maybe that's just how it is in my memory).

Now you'll have to upload the sequel to this game, Magatraveller II: Quest for the Ancients(I believe it is called). That game is much improved interface-wise. I remember playing it for long hours in the day... My friend would come over and we would use the character creation system over and over again to get the best possible character.

Retro gaming rules!

:D :ok: :Brain:

Hi,

One of my favourit Bands, The Lord weird Slough Feg, wrote a concept album called "Traveller" about the original pen & paper game... really awsome for heavy metal fans... check this out at www.slough-feg.com, if you're interested in this kind of music!
Unforunately I don't have the time to check the game out no cause a got a nice little cat yesterday which neads my attention :-)

greetings from germany!

That's an old one which we've had since Bard's Tale and Might and Magic. Every seasoned player of that genre of RPGs knows it.

seeker_starkiller 02-01-2006 01:32 PM

Hi there. Thanks for this awesome site by the way. Extremely well organised and full of fantastic games. I could probably spend the rest of my life playing all this stuff.

I have the 2 Traveller games as I was a pen and paper Traveller player (in fact as a kid my friend and I bought the original black boxed set on its first release, which shows you old I am).

These games are not the best RPGs ever, by a long chalk, but they have a particular nostalgia value and they are not bad for whiling away the hours.

Both games have a few bugs, mainly inaccuracies in the data table. This has some weird effects because the price and performance of certain items and equipment is silly. For example automatic weapons are no different from semiautomatic weapons, the ammunition for one kind of laser rifle costs a ridiculous amount, etc.

Because I am a total pedantic freak and idiot I spent a few weeks reverse engineering the data files of both games so I could create patches. I have some patches and also some documentation of how the data files work. Useful if you want to cheat, among other things.

Someone posted a question about how the skill system works and I think my notes shed some light on this (I can't remember as it was several years ago that I did this work). Anyway if anyone is interested in these patches and docs please drop me an email telling me what to do and I will upload them / email them.

Spike

PS: Big kudos to anyone who can explain the origin of my username on this bulletin board!

seeker_starkiller 02-01-2006 02:13 PM

Here are the distance codes requested by RW, above, for Megatraveller 2. You will need to paste these into a text document and drag out the window so it is very wide. I would upload as a spreadsheet but I don't know how to upload, sorry.

Spike.

Having trouble downloading the manual... Any other files available that might give me a clue which keys do what?

dave 12-05-2006 12:38 AM

i would guess you are looking for starkiller sheridan of the earth alliance and later of the interstellar alliance. also not only does this game rock but so does this site, i grabbed covert action earlier, now i have mega traveller 1, so many memories, been playing both games on and off for about ten years, if you add mega traveller 2 add a manual too, i loved that game but simply didn't know how to fly the goddam ship.

malthaussen 16-05-2006 07:40 AM

I still have the original MT 1 and 2 games myself, on good old 5.25" floppy disks (which my computers no longer can use, LOL). Never did finish the second one, but since it's available at HOTU I think I'll d/l it and give it a try...

There is one thing you'll probably want to do if you play either game, and that's crank your CPU cycles 'way down. Your team will be attacked as soon as they're off the ship in almost every space port you enter, and you need to stop and split everyone up to return fire (with the 'p' key) fast. (The 'p' key is actually the party access key, but it also automatically pauses the game). In fact, IIRC, you begin MT 1 with an immediate shoot-out in a bar, so remember that this game was designed to run on a 386 and set your cycles accordingly!

There are a couple of ways to make big bucks fast without murdering party members. One is to hit the casino and save/restore a lot. Another is to stock up on vacc suits and take a passenger liner (middle passage, NOT low passage) to one of the nearby low-level tech planets (see the docs for tech levels). The markup on a good vacc suit is huge, and you won't risk running into pirates (who will toast your ship until you get a lot of expensive upgrades) if you fly commercial. The team can carry quite a few vacc suits in inventory: sell them off, return to base, and rinse and repeat.

Once you have a ship that can survive interstellar travel without getting reduced to rivets, the abso-damn-lute best cargo run you can make is water from Efate to Louzy. After fuelling costs, the return is in the neighborhood of 36:1. (Yes, I still have my old notes to the game. I never throw anything out)

This should probably be a separate topic, but I wasn't allowed to start one, sooo...

:sos:

I can't buy fuel. Whenever I go to a starport and try to buy fuel, a screen will appear that looks as if I'm supposed to be getting fuel, and then nothing. I've tried clicking on everything there is on the screen. There are no options available on this screen. I've tried rearranging my character positions aboard the ship - everything I can think of. It doesn't matter if I try to have a character pay for fuel, or the party account. I'm sure I must be doing something very basic wrong, but I can't find a clue in the manual as to what it might be. So basically I can take off, zip to another system, and that's it. Not much "mega" in that kind of traveling. So if anyone can tell me what I might be doing wrong, it would surely be appreciated.

I cannot figure out land combat, namely how the order function works.

Can anyone help me with this?

Hit F as in 'Fill' to add fuel, or A as in 'All' to fill completely.

Hit P as in 'Pay'.

It's pretty simple to hex edit a .SAV saved game file, too... to accomplish almost anything, not just to get ridiculously rich.

I have the boxed version of this, inside is a little yellow piece of paper with an advert for the strategy guide/tip book hahaha Wow...did anyone ever buy that?

I like this game a lot but find it impossible without a journal, I do wish I knew a little more about it though, there's not much info on what skills do what, and I still don't know if it's better to have an extra point in sword or an extra point in strength.
I had a very strange bug with it once upon a time, it replaced everything in my inventory with these weird items, they were like graphical vomit (if you know what I mean) and worth an absolute fortune! I mean trillions of credits. Sadly this overwrote the 3 items you get at the beginning potentially making it unwinable, but it was fun walking about in battle dresses and having a super space ship.
At some point I'm going to sit down and beat it! It's one of those games that I need to play in the day time rather than at 3am and with a journal!
