jones in the fast lane looks like a boardgame(life) with some rpg elements where u choose job, work, earn $, get promotion. Quite a fun game to play with, its also a 4 player game just like monopoly.

Todd 24-10-2004 02:19 PM

This game gave me the skills needed to succeed in life. I wouldn't be the professional business man that I am had it not been for this game as a teenager.

Nate 28-10-2004 05:59 PM

Monopoly plus a little bit of the Sims. This used to be my favorite game, and I'm glad somebody still has it. I still love the Monolith Burger music.

JimDandy 28-10-2004 07:29 PM

With DOSBox, does the sound work as well? I am a huge fan of Jones in the Fast Lane, but haven't been able to get the sound working since Win 3.11 days...

Thanks

JimDandy

Nate 08-11-2004 05:05 PM

It most certainly does! It's hardly worth playing without the sound.

Guest 13-11-2004 01:18 AM

It's a great game, had lots of good times with it. Thanks!

Scruff 01-12-2004 12:15 AM

I bought Jones in the Fast Lane on cd-rom back in the day, and played it on a 1x cd rom drive. In fact Jones in the Fast Lane, was the first cd rom game i think, if it wasnt, it sure was one of the first.

Tuttle 01-12-2004 06:33 AM

There was a CD version? I had the one with both 5.25" and 3.5" disks in the box. :)

clouseau 10-02-2005 03:26 PM

This game l play when a was litel and l played it all day. Now when l am older l even play it more. l just love this game. It bring a nother dimension to pc-games. If you only have play by yourself l recomend you to play the "multigame" with your friends.

:ok:

If you're having trouble getting sound forget about dosbox and just run it under windows with vdmsound. Works for me.

danny 01-04-2005 04:53 PM

This is truly a great game! Brings back memories!

maz 07-04-2005 01:36 AM

holy crudballs! I used to play this on my computer at home all the freaking time. People would come over to play on my 286/386/486 (it got upgraded a few times) just because this game was so cool. I don't know how cool it is to those who have no nostalgia associated with it, but a whole troop of girl scouts can't be all wrong.

Wahski 01-09-2005 10:19 AM

I have the CD version of this game and it is great.
Leaves for dead the floppy version.

CD version includes speech of all the text in game, and short video clips of the faces in the various screens.

Eg when you buy fries the fella on screen asks, "would you like fries with that?!"

Cd game is approx 25Meg in size with approx 38mins of audio as an audio track on CD.

You can run this version directly from CD without installing it.

Greensystemsgo 03-06-2006 04:02 PM

I played this a couple of years ago, but i still have it in its original box, and i have the manual, and original cd!

breathe_happy 03-06-2006 07:24 PM

I remember this game... I miss this game... I still have this game but can't access it b/c I'm missing some files for it. It was on my old computer from a few years ago and apparently I forgot to transfer all the files for the game to my new computer so now I can't play it anymore. It saddens me.

dr_doom_man 10-11-2006 03:42 AM

me and a couple friends are doing a remake of the game, if anyones interested.. quoted from a post on our forums...
"Our updated version is going to pretty much take the gameplay that made the original Jones in the Fast Lane so much fun and add to it a variety of new features including updated maps and much more in depth gameplay. Some possible features include -

-a variety of new jobs and locations, each with their own unique activities
-a more in depth character creation system
-more events
-more items
-updated graphics
-a new system that allows you to move up to bigger and better cities if you have the money, each with unique locations and jobs
-more reasons to continue playing after you have the best job (which oh by the way will take considerably more effort)
-support for expansion packs and add-ons

it will basically be Jones in the Fast Lane times 10, with more stuff to do, more stuff to buy, just plain more of everything. Now if anyone is interested in helping, contact either me or pyroman as we need all the help we can get, especially with the graphics and audio. otherwise, just kinda sit back and know that there might be a newer and better version of jones in the fast lane coming out some time in the (hopefully) not too distant future of time and space"

The Fifth Horseman 12-03-2007 01:56 PM

"Ideas"? As in?

Doctadeth 12-03-2007 11:10 PM

Well, does anyone know of any registered online stores for it? or is it just a relic now.....

:titan:

The Fifth Horseman 13-03-2007 12:38 PM

We'd link to one if there were any.

If that's any consolation, the 15-year ESA protection period on this game expires in 9 months.

W00000000t finally.

I can wait 9 months. This year I waited a year to be with me girlfriend! she loves gaming as well, but i've yet to introduce her to retro gaming ftw!

Oh and slightly off topic ere, why all the dissidence about runescape? (I am actually a pmod in runescape)

The Fifth Horseman 14-03-2007 12:23 PM

No idea. I never played it.

But let's not go too far offtopic. If you want folks from around here to tell you why they have such critical opinions about Runescape, please talk about that in the Favorite Oldies & Newbies forum.

Arthur 29-06-2007 10:03 PM

One remark about the game and review. If I remember it correctly, when it was introduced in The Netherlands, as far as I know it, they introduced it only on a CD-ROM version. Which included "many" sounds!! Just for the record, at the moment Jones in the fast lane was introduced this way, it was (as far as I know) the first "big" game on a CD-ROM, and the first one to have "real cool" sounds. We are talking 1992-ish as far as I know and both the CD-ROM and sound cards were just introduced as new hot products. Jones was supposed to be (one of) the first games to use these new features. Which only about 15 years later we all take for granted.

mdeba 19-08-2007 05:55 PM

IIRC the speech was ultimately a nuisance because it had to spin up the cd drive first. This wouldn't be a problem though mounting it with daemon tools or the like. Or maybe my cd drive was just really slow when it came out..

So what's this about the 15 year limit?
Does it become public domain, or does ESA just stop protecting it?

The Fifth Horseman 20-08-2007 08:00 AM

ESA doesn't stop protecting it... they just don't bother with it anymore after that.

Doink 21-02-2008 05:51 AM

BranjoHello 18-02-2009 12:42 PM

The Sims before The Sims. :3:

El Quia 24-02-2009 02:22 PM

Great Game

I definitely love this game! It has give me hours of fun with my friends when I was a teenager. We used to play on my friend's PC and I still remember when one of my friends tried to play al the game without clothes. It was hilarius to see the old man going about in a barrel.

Such nostalgy... I'm downloading it right now ;)

laiocfar 24-02-2009 11:11 PM

I still remember the barrel.

pdick 11-03-2009 07:00 PM

Its too bad the CD version isn't available for download. I know a 30mb or 40 mb download is probably a hit on bandwidth, but if ya can post it up I'll definitely throw some $ at this site.

The barrel=best outfit ever.

gumpy 17-06-2009 06:49 PM

This game is cool. The CD ROM version of the game has full speech.

luerich 15-12-2009 04:44 AM

I recently bought the CD-ROM version on eBay. The problem with posting it is that it's a "mixed content" CD--one part audio, one part data. You cannot rip ISO files of such CDs (you can't make an ISO of a regular audio CD for that matter). So, I really don't know how one would go about making a copy of the disc besides a direct CD-to-CD burn. But yeah, this version is pretty sweet.

So where's da money? :violent:

I was able to rip the CD with ImgBurn to BIN/CUE and mount it with Virtual Clone Drive. Now I can play this CD version without having to use the actual disc- thanks! It's also much faster than waiting for the drive to spin up again on many of the game locations.

Game category

This is clearly a strategy game and should be put under that category.

BranjoHello 19-08-2010 10:56 AM

negative_chill 31-05-2013 07:58 PM

Lazy Game Reviews just put out a nice little piece on this one, somebody also put up a flash version of it with the CD audio intact
http://home.broadpark.no/~kboye/jones/jones.html
It's pretty fun

tripperJ 25-12-2014 10:23 PM

New version out!

did you know it's out on Android now, a cool dev is taking request on how to improve it all the time, we had recently added pass and play, was added within a few days, pretty sweet.

The game has greatly improved graphics and a new similar retro sounds to irritate you into a 90's groove lol. if your interested...
