Hi

I followed the instructions:
opened dosbox
mounted heroes directory as a cdrom drive with the following command
"mount e -t cdrom e:\heroes"
accessed the cdrom drive and installed the game
installation completed successfully
then i typed "heroes" like it said to play to game and i got a message saying:
"can't open file:"
that's it, not saying which file and i can't play the game
i have win xp pro and dosbox 0.63 (the latest)

Thanks in advance

Did you navigate to the installed directory rather than the CD drive?

Liran 25-09-2005 02:02 PM

yes i did
i mounted one of my hard drives and installed heroes on it
and then tried to run the game from the installed directory

BeefontheBone 25-09-2005 03:12 PM

ok, type "dir /w" without quotes to see what's in the folder - if there's a bat or an exe try running that; if there's a setup, setsound or install you might need to configure the sound first - not sure, haven't run Heroes myself.

Liran 25-09-2005 03:51 PM

nope
there isn't any other executable file (including bat and all others) except the "heroes.exe"

BeefontheBone 25-09-2005 04:46 PM

It gives you a missing file error when you run the exe? What other files are in the Heroes folder?

Liran 25-09-2005 07:00 PM

it doesn't tell me of a missing file.
it only says "can't open file:"
in the heroes folder there are 2 files and 3 directories:
files: heroes.exe, heroes.cfg
directories: data, games, maps

why do you need to run heroes in DOSbox??? it's a windows game.

Shouldnt' they work under XP? i mean they work on win 2000.

Liran 25-09-2005 07:50 PM

i'm talking about the first heroes game
otherwise i wouldn't be posting on this site

BeefontheBone 25-09-2005 07:51 PM

@gregor The first one is a DOS game.

Did you download it from here? I d/led the archive today and all you need to do is extract the zip contents, then navigate to it in DOSBox. The root folder will contain ANIM, DATA, GAMES, MAPS folders, plus heroes.cfg, heroes.exe, install.bat, install.pif, readme.txt, setup.exe and setup.pif - run setup to set the sound, then heroes.exe to play.

EDIT: You don't need to mount anything as a CD drive for this, the archive extracts an installed game.

i did as you told me, but then it told me it was unable to access my cdrom drive.
so i made a copy of the heroes directory (the one extracted)
then i mounted one directory as a cdrom drive and went to the other and tried there to start the game and it worked

thanks for your help

BeefontheBone 26-09-2005 12:19 PM

Hmm. maybe it just needs a cd drive mounted - my DOSBox mounts my physical CD drive and heroes didn't mind there being nothing in there. <shrugs>

Liran 26-09-2005 01:41 PM

you're right.
i mounted one of my hard drives (which doesn't contain Heroes) and it worked.
does your dosbox mounts your cd-drive automatically? if so could you tell me how to do it?

SupSuper 26-09-2005 02:26 PM

Open up DOSBox.conf (Start > Programs > DOSBox), go to the bottom of the file where it says:

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.

Below that just add mount e -t cdrom e:\ (or whatever your cd-drive is).

BeefontheBone 26-09-2005 02:32 PM

That's the one. Mine also mounts the DOSProgs folder on my HDD as C:\ then clears the screen and does dir /w so I know what's in there.

thanks, you've been a great help
