Sounds from the highway!? Do you see any car there!?

A. J. Raffles 13-09-2005 09:25 PM

I'll try to remember to send you a card once I'm completely through with all my exams and all that. (Might take another month until I find time, though.)

Edit: Any preferences as to what sort of cards you like?

Romano 13-09-2005 09:37 PM

Well, the idea was that everyone sent a postcard to everyboy who post the address!

taikara 13-09-2005 09:50 PM

I'll send cards, but there is no way in heck I'm posting my physical address

I'm sure it could be found, but I'd prefer stalkers have to actually WORK for it, as that's the point of stalking... :D

I received a postcard from Kosta, too ^_^ With a dolphin on it, whee :D

A. J. Raffles 13-09-2005 10:15 PM

Ah, right. Well, I'm afraid I'm a tad too paranoid for that, but I'll try and send you a postcard anyway.

TheChosen 15-09-2005 06:26 AM

Hmm...this sounds fun! Wait for my card!

I want to receive cards too. A little card from a friend is a good surprise for a stress filled schoolday.

Heres the address:

Jesse Ojala(My name)
Pitkä(A with two dots)katu 1
53420
Lappeenranta
Finland

Sebatianos 15-09-2005 03:56 PM

You'll get a card from me soon (maybe even in person the next time I'm in Zagreb, which isn't too often, but still it happenes). :D

EDIT
The Chosen can also look forward to my card (but the chances I'd go for a visit to Lappeenranta are very slim).

BTW - here's my address:
Borut Jurišić
Ormoška cesta 15
9240 Ljutomer
Slovenija

Bobbin Threadbare 15-09-2005 04:36 PM

I don't feel safe about posting my address in a public forum, so anyone that wants to send a postcard to me will have to PM me.

.:EDIT:.
I might send postcards to people. Maybe I'll even make a special postcard.

RedHeadSebbe 20-09-2005 04:50 PM

Nice house...It took five days to get it here.....i´ll try finding something intresting for you too

Sebatianos 20-09-2005 04:51 PM

Fawfulhasfury 20-09-2005 05:19 PM

Bobbin Threadbare 20-09-2005 05:25 PM

:w00t:

moogle 21-09-2005 04:10 AM

I'l try and send a postycard...

rainwife 21-09-2005 01:57 PM

Thanks for the greetings Romano! And hopefully we will see each other in the near future!

Romano 21-09-2005 03:59 PM

:Brain:
I just received a postcard from Rainwife and Sebatianos from Ljutomer (in English it means Sharpmeter :tease: )

Here you are and be envious :sneaky:

http://www.anarchy-movement.org/temp/ljutomer.jpg

Sebatianos 21-09-2005 04:06 PM

And here's the one I got from an ancient Roman... O :bleh: - from ZAGREB (meaning scratched... )

BTW - great idea posting cards here - maybe people will overcome their fear of giving out post addresses :ok:

Kon-Tiki 21-09-2005 04:06 PM

w00t! Got to be in the city now friday (9am, for some dumb-behind stuff, and's way too early), so I can post a card too (I don't trust the post office of my village. They tend to leave bills'n other urgent stuff laying 'round for a few weeks before delivering them)

Got a card, btw. Awesome building on it (The National Theatre from Zagreb). I can stare at it for ages and not get bored of it (then again, I've always been very fond of architectural art) :ok:

Shrek 21-09-2005 07:09 PM

<mental note: hum, must try to get some pretty postcards to send to these guys too :D >

RedHeadSebbe 23-09-2005 08:42 AM

Would you like an e-card maybe, or i can get you a ordinary post card from Kalix....

Romano 23-09-2005 08:56 AM

I would like to get ordinary postcard with ordinary stamps... :max:

As Abandonia is some kind of games archives I will try to build some kind of Abandonia archives :)

TheChosen 23-09-2005 02:13 PM

I just received the cards from Romano and Sebatianos (You were right, your handwriting sucks :D ).

Il be posting your cards soon.

Kon-Tiki 23-09-2005 02:53 PM

Sent my card today. Hope my handwriting's not too hard to decipher... I'm said to write terribly small (still's big to me, though), which gives alot of people trouble with it, it seems.

Romano 27-09-2005 05:05 PM

That is what I name escalation ;)

I got postcard from Kon-Tiki! Thank you! :Brain:

I would like to have a walk along this nice brook !!!

http://www.anarchy-movement.org/temp/betekom.jpg

Kon-Tiki 30-09-2005 08:12 PM

You mean that river, in the middle-down pic? That's the Demer, and the smell'll take away the will to take a walk along it in no time. When the weather's warm and we need to motivate our kids at Scouts to actually walk during a walking activity, we tend to take waterguns and load them up with water from that river. They get motivated quickly, either when they realize it's water from the Demer, or when they smell it. At least it's getting better, though. Back in my granddad's days, they did running races on it, and back in the '90s, I've known 'bout somebody falling in it and coming out with second-degree burns. Nowadays, there ought to be eels in there, and it just smells. Friend of mine dropped into it a few years back, and only thing he had, was that he reeked for a week.

Ehmm... I'm rambling now  To make it short: It may look nice, but get too close and your nose'll rebel.

Bobbin Threadbare 01-10-2005 05:44 AM

OMG! I forgot about this! Sorry Sebbe.

@Aus users mainly: Do you know if they's sell postcards at newsagencies?

Doubler 01-10-2005 12:02 PM

I got a card from Zagreb! :w00t:
Thanks Romano :ok:

They do at the combined newsagents/post office agency near me. It would probably vary, but most newsagents would sell some. :)

Romano 06-10-2005 04:44 PM

This Topic is not dead and that is not my fault

I got a postcard from TheVoid :Brain:

It is Venice of course. Very fancy. The University where our new updater will stay for a couple of next years is on the opposite side of Canal Grande and little bit less fancy :bleh:

Romano 06-10-2005 04:57 PM

Sorry for double posting but I got another potcard :Brain: :Brain:

It is from Doubler. I have sent him snowed Zagreb and he reply with Friesland (brrrrrrrrrrr)

Sebatianos 06-10-2005 07:22 PM

Doubler 06-10-2005 07:27 PM

I'll send you a card, Seb :)
And maybe you could send me one?

Sebatianos 06-10-2005 07:29 PM

Sure thing. I'll send to anyone who gives me the address (Sent out 3 cards already).

Sebatianos 11-10-2005 06:03 PM

It's from A.J.

Yeah, its just the end of the winter semester. That way summer can start, and you can go to college in the Fall, during the FALL SEMESTER.

Because you can actually go to college during the winter semester, it is not logical to go after that. Therefore, there is no intelligent spring semester. Of course, I am only thinking of the U.S. and have no idea about other countries.

Yes, Raffles you are paranoid :bleh: :tomato:

Ah, but you're forgetting that in some countries you don't have semesters to begin with, so there can be no such thing as a "spring semester", obviously. Anyway, I KNOW I'm paranoid, so there's no need for you to keep telling me, Mrs Holton.:bleh: Oh, and Happy Birthday!

By the way, a friend of mine squealed with delight when she spotted Sebatianos' card on my desk this afternoon. I had a spring semester at Washington and Lee University... we had 12 week long fall and winter semesters, and then a 6 week spring semester in which we took less classes, but twice as often.

Okay, maybe not at Oxford, but they do in fact exist! :D

DeathDude 18-10-2005 12:30 AM

Oh yes there are spring semesters, and summer one toos heres, had to take one last year for a class only lasted through may, but technically called a spring course, that's the time when the college prob gets most of it's money they love to overcharge ya like terribly on the courses they offer, *remembers 400 some for course not including books <_<

All right, all right! *hides head in shame at utter lack of knowledge about US universities*:D

We have Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity, and I believe you can call them autumn term, winter term and summer term as well. No spring semester, though...

By the way, a friend of mine squealed with delight when she spotted Sebatianos' card on my desk this afternoon. For one horrible second I thought she was going to reveal herself as Danny252, but it turns out that she'd been working for a bank (I think) in Slovenia for a couple of months and absolutely loved it. Slovenia, that is, not the bank.:D
I'm glad to hear that... and although I'm not 100% sure, but I think our banks wouldn't let just aout anybody to work for them (sorry Danny252, maybe you'll make a wonderful banker someday, but I doubt you're old enough to be one already).

BTW - Which bank did she work for?

Can't remember, but I'll ask her when I see her this afternoon.

Fruit Pie Jones 18-10-2005 08:57 PM

I was just certain that Raffles was going to point out that the Latin root of semester means "six months," so the concept of a "spring semester" is fundamentally flawed, because spring doesn't last for six months no matter where you live. Although I'm somewhat disappointed, I recognize that this is prescriptivism taken to an unrealistic extreme, so perhaps I should hold Raffles in higher regard for not doing such a thing, regardles of how tempted she may have been. :bleh:

If you ask me I was being sarcastic and silly, but it seems that for the past two months you haven't realized my more "outlandish" behavoir, disregard any comments you see as not up to your standard.
And my post really didn't have less of a point than FPJ's, so there's no reason to be hypocritical and chastise me for making off topic posts while you yourself were doing the same previously.

In other regards, take what I say more lightly, and don't take it into consideration too much, or you'll be overdoing it, as most people seem to do in certain cases. And as for the spelling and grammar thing, there's really no need for over extensive accuracy in a online board simply existant for discussion between individualy beings, as it was being discussed before, it's purpose was undeniably needed because the discussion about "semesters" was in progress.

In a more on topic side - I'm too nit-picky about giving my address out, and what would my parents think if I get a post card from some place off in Norway or England?

lethe 19-10-2005 01:19 AM

Outlandish? How so? Well no, not really. I was only thinking that maybe your older brother had taken over your account during your absence... :tomato:

That's two very nice and elaborate sentences that you have there, but they don't make any sense to me, I'm afraid. You may have misunderstood my point there (and I am being serious about this): When I said people ought to care more about how they write, I didn't mean they ought to write like a thesaurus and make lavish use of punctuation marks. But it's very easy to become sloppy about your language in a medium like this, and sloppiness about how you write is simply a bad habit. Yes, the sole purpose of forums like this one is to be a platform for people to communicate, but you will run into situations where you have to communicate with people outside internet forums (even if it's just a job application), and then you'll be struggling with those bad habits you picked up. But suit yourself.

Well, your parents would probably just think that you've put your name on one of those chain letters. Or joined some weird foreign postcard-cult, perhaps.;)

Fruit Pie Jones 19-10-2005 05:28 PM

If I may contribute once again to the off-topic side of this conversation, Raffles is right; I'm not an insanely picky scholar, but I do care about spelling and grammar. However, I don't care about these things simply for the purpose of needling people; I'm interested (on an amateur level) in the English language and its history. I like finding out information about the origin of a particular word or phrase, especially one that I've used for ages without really thinking about it. (WordOrigins.org is an excellent website for this sort of thing, if I'm not the only one.) An appreciation for correct spelling and grammar goes along with that interest.

I also agree with Raffles' other point: communication is a necessary part of life for social creatures (which we are), and a solid grasp of the mechanics of your language will help you to be an effective communicator.

One more note: I have a great deal of respect for those of you who speak English as a second (or third or fourth or...) language. It's the only one I speak, so if I ever make a derogatory remark about your skills with the language, feel free to put me in my place.

Ines 20-10-2005 08:37 PM

I appreciate some of the great English I got to read on these pages, especially because English is my second/third language. What a treat this was and what an interesting discussion. Spelled or misspelled. Although I also get pretty notorious about spelling and grammar myself (ask Kosta  ). Thanks for the site connection on etymology.

Thanks for the few good laughs too.

To continue on the topic, I am in the country where post service doesn't exist, and postcards (not greeting cards) can be bought only in places that are a mix of a museum and a galery. The postcards are in most cases from 70s, maybe 80s, or even before those (ancient :D) times.

I would love to send or all of you a postcard from Kinshasa in DR Congo, not to mention how thrilling would it be to receive some.
It is so good to know a post office is there, although you may never want to use it to send mail. Now I understand why. Three months ago my family sent me a birthday card - never saw it. :help:

Snail-mail is great!!

Hmm, but I think you're on sabbatical this year, Mrs Holton, so you may well be in Portugal, researching the influence Portugal didn't have on Chaucer's writing but might have had he ever been there.:P

Danny252 22-10-2005 09:07 AM

Haha, the mail system is slow...
Finally got Romano's postcard. I'll scan it and upload later, when I get the computer with the scanner.
I'll won't send a reply just yet, firstly seeing as I'll only manage to get to a mailbox tomorrow and they don't do post on Sundays,
and secondly because I'd like to send more than one at once. I'll be able to send some on Tuesday afternoon, by which time I hope I'll have more cards.

His postcard has doubled my mail! Today I got my magazine and his card.

Finally got Romano's postcard.

I was wandering how the mail system works, so I asked one person from Croatian postal service. In the day time they collect post and during the night time they manually sort all shipments. The next day they transfer bags with sorted post to airport. Post addressed to UK will not be immediatily load to flight somewhere in Britain but to another distribution center in Frankfurt. In Danny's case my postcard will wait there for flight to Birmingham. When arrived, post will be sorted again according to postal code and sent by van or train to Danny's town. After that all thing is up to postman.
:D

Danny252 22-10-2005 12:04 PM

They won't use train, they've stopped using postal trains here in the UK recently. Of course us train fans still put them in our simulations...

Edit: Heres the card

And, I let my lazyness by side and finaly bought you guys and girls some postcards... My taste sucks, so they probrably aren' t as pretty as they should be (sorry)

Nah, this just means you don't have to lick the stamp before pasting it to the snail. It'll stick on its own.

BTW - Danny, I think it takes at least a week to 10 days for cards to travell by snail-mail. I think I got Romano's in about 4 days.
I'd reach Zagreb (where Romano lives) from Ljutomer (where I live) in less then 4 days if I walked the distance (it's only about 80 miles). So snail mail really has the speed of a snail (yet it's still much faster then it used to be...).

Doubler 24-10-2005 03:57 PM

Apparently it took a week for the card I sent Romano to arrive, and I send yours only a couple of days ago, Danny. Have patience :max:

1. It's nice to get non-electronic mail; it's getting pretty rare these days.
2. You have a definite proof that there's actually human beings behind those avatars. (Unless you're REALLY paranoid and believe Dr Holton to be capable of faking dozens of different handwritings and stamps.)
3. You'll get cards from far-off places you might not even be able to find on a map, and to the people who wrote those cards, the place where you live will seem equally exotic. It's a bit like those chain-letters that used to be so popular.

And he'll probably have to spend a few months in quarantine, to make sure he's not a carrier of the deadly snail flu.:P

PrejudiceSucks 25-10-2005 02:44 PM

Hopefully the virus moves even slower than the snails. We'll be able to build airtight underground shelters :P

Sebatianos 25-10-2005 02:46 PM

Haven't you heard? The snail flu doesn't exist anymore.

The carrier snail infected with the snail flu needs thirty-four days to reach the snail convention, the incubation period for the snail flu in twenty-eight days. So the snail got infected and died while still on the way, being unable to contaminate the snail comunity (which remains flu free).

But the French are in danger of being infected with it, because the dead snail ended up in a snail salad the very evening of his death (being dead prevented him from fighting off people who wanted to eat him).

Anyway - because of the bird flu there are no more carrier pigeons (that's also the real reason why the modern mail service is called the snail mail), they replaced the pigeons with snail, because they can't spread empidemics.

Now you know

PrejudiceSucks 25-10-2005 02:53 PM

Cheers! now I know why cross-channel post takes so long! They have to pass the letters onto sea-snails which are amazingly rare in the channel!

A. J. Raffles 28-10-2005 11:37 AM

Exact change for €0.57 stamps? Yeah, right. I bet that's just a way the Portuguese postal service is trying to get rich. They don't WANT to put up machines that give change. It would interfere with their Evil Plans...

Romano 28-10-2005 12:00 PM

According to brilliant A.J. Raffles definition "Home is where the scanner is" we can logicaly conclude that only Danny252 is at home, because only he attach scanned postcards.

Where are the others :ranting:

Kon-Tiki 28-10-2005 12:11 PM

Our scanner doesn't work, but I'll try to get a pic of it.

Sebatianos 28-10-2005 12:27 PM

Woo-hoo I just came home and a letter was waiting for me (and it wasn't a bill or a comertial). When I opened it there was a post-card inside (yes, a postcard inside an envalope). It was from SHREK :tnx:

http://www.abandonia.com/~sebatianos/Lisboa.PNG

A. J. Raffles 28-10-2005 12:32 PM

He really does seem to employ racing snails.:D

Romano 28-10-2005 02:27 PM

Yes indeed. Shrek employ hurdler snail :w00t: Yes, I got postcard. :Brain:

Now you can compare old and new part if Lisboa !

Sebatianos 28-10-2005 03:55 PM

I think Shrek deserves a special title for this - The Speedy Snail-Gaucho (or something) - what do you say admins?

Blood-Pigggy 28-10-2005 04:31 PM

@Raffles: I wouldn't mind a postcard from Oxford, as someone previously received, :D

P.S. Do you know of Mark Haddon, who wrote "The Curious Incident of The Dog In The Night-Time"?

Sure, if you'll give me your address.:)

I've read the book, but I didn't go to his book signing at Waterstone's the other day, if that's what you mean. Maybe I should have. I quite liked Dog in the Nighttime, but the new book sounded a bit weird to me.

robotangel 28-10-2005 10:25 PM

I want to send a postcard, do anyone want do recieve a postcard from me :D ?
Just post and give me your adress (eg per pm) :D

One nice of Cologne is OK :bye: ? (I'll try to find such a card, but this won't be a problem, 30km to Cologne :D )

:ok: :ok: :ok:

Havell 30-10-2005 08:42 AM

OK, I'm on standby with a pile of postcards and a pen, if you want one, and your address isn't in this thread, PM me your address.

Romano 30-10-2005 09:10 AM

And do not forget to put your address on that postcard or PM me ;)

Havell 30-10-2005 09:42 AM

I probably won't be doing that. I can imagine my parents' reaction when I start receiving postcards from people on a forum which they think I spend far to much time on anyway ;) Maybe at a later date though.

Ines 30-10-2005 05:23 PM

Somebody mentioned I could maybe send postcards - I know it would be interesting to get one from DR Congo - BUT

1. post office here is hopeless
2. no stamps are available
3. only diplomatic mail and DHL are available

To do a postcard with Kinshasa would mean the use of camera. Unfortunatelly, no luck with that one too. If spotted by a police or military, the use of camera can put you to jail - kind of trying to avoid that experience. I did take a few photos of Kinshasa from a building where I used to live - with throw away camera (really bad quality) - and if you're interested I can scan and post them on the site upon my return to Zagreb.

Sorry, no mail from here. :bye:

Abi79 30-10-2005 05:53 PM

Can put you to jail ? Jesus Christ. :Jesus:

Danny252 30-10-2005 06:46 PM

Doubler 30-10-2005 06:55 PM

Sebatianos, you should've recieved my card by now. Have you?

Sebatianos 30-10-2005 07:56 PM

@ Rainwife: you' re welcome, glad you liked it :D

@ robotangel: I can PM you my address if you PM me yours

I got a card from Danny today.:Brain: His sorry excuse for his bad handwriting (which is NOTHING like my bad handwriting, by the way) was that he had written it on horseback during his riding lesson. Or something like that.:P

Danny252 01-11-2005 04:06 PM

ahem. I was in the car to riding.
Roads are surpisingly bumpy.
My writing is usually better than that :P

Sebatianos 02-11-2005 09:05 PM

@Doubler - sorry, but still nothing. I checkjed at the post office and they will start looking for it - they have sent out a search message (trying to trace the route back). We'll see in a few days, but with postcards the chances of finding one are really slim (if it were a personal letter signed in for they'd have to keep track of it, but now...).

Danny252 02-11-2005 09:10 PM

Expect mine soon Seb ;)
Unless some is eating up all postcards due for Ljutomer...

Romano 03-11-2005 03:51 PM

Our popular member Danny252 find some time... AND SENT ME A POSTCARD :Brain:

You can see the oldiest iron bridge in Britain and you will be surprised in which town is it placed... in Iron Bridge :)

Thank you Danny :tnx:

A. J. Raffles 03-11-2005 03:55 PM

Hmm, is that Danny sitting on the bench with his grandparents?

Danny252 03-11-2005 04:14 PM

Well, seeing as my only living grandparent is in Sweden..

The bridge used to be flat, but over 230 years or so the valley has sagged, causing it to be.. pointy!

What?? Can that be possible? From a point of view of an engineer, that' s very dificult to belive. We had bridges here in Portugal that just felt for minor reasons. But again, maybe English bridges can defy the laws of "stress" and "strenght" (whatever that is :P )

Danny252 03-11-2005 05:19 PM

Well, see, the middle, it is a very small point where the bridge has physically bent. And they have done reconstructive work every so often ;)

Sebatianos 08-11-2005 12:43 PM

A funny thing just happened. I got a call from the post office, saying they couldn't find the card that Doubler sent (the one that was presumably lost and that they said they'd start a search for). They said it's hopeles and that they won't be able to find it if it had no return address - well I got the card a few days ago (see previous posts), but they obviously didn't even know
so the search obviously didn't include the postman's bag (it was there two days after they started searching) and it ended up in scaner (after being delivered). :D

Btw I know of just one Billa in Venice...was it the one near the boat stop by any chance?

It was somewhere where sign "X in a circle" is placed at the map...

TheVoid 26-11-2005 12:34 PM

Yeah I guess that's the one. :) I could see the Giudecca's main church from there.

Yes. But because of my poor Italian, when I asked for BILLA, some funny guy sent me to the place where I found this:

I agree. It was an artistic exhibit at La Biennale di Venezia, 2003.
Sorry.
But real world is even more disturbing

We can accept or ignore that, but it is so!

Hura!!!
I just got a card from Kotor. Just the thing to make me feel better while watching the snowflakes falling outside...

Fruit Pie Jones 01-12-2005 04:10 PM

Man, what's in that water? It's greener than the trees!

Sebatianos 01-12-2005 04:27 PM

I guess my scaner screwed it up a bit (the water should be deep green - the color of clear clean sea water with vegetation inside). I'll try rescaning it.

Danny252 01-12-2005 04:31 PM

Look like 16bit or 256 colours... maybe thats why. I have the same boat on my card (but different otherwise) and its less green-y

That stupid rule !?

Could you explain what you are talking about :D

Master MC 26-01-2006 03:37 PM

This rule. It only creates chaos.

Quote:

Rule 3: No thread resurrection. By thread resurrection, I am talking about threads that are about 3-4 weeks old which have gotten buried under the newer threads, and they don't have to be on the second page. There is one exception to this: the starter of a thread may continue any of his old threads as long as the topic of his new post matches the topic of his old thread.
Oh wait this resurrection is legal since it's not 3-4 weeks old.

Toxik 26-01-2006 03:41 PM

Oh....youre one of those who actually read the rules arent ya?

Master MC 26-01-2006 03:42 PM

Well a topic like this should in fact be a sticky. There are people's addresses here and it shows that Abandonia is a comunity conected in more ways then one (not just over the net). So if this thread is forgoten, no one else can send post-cards, letters, packages... to people.

Keeping this alive also keeps the realer-then-on-line spirit of abandonia alive. If that brakes the rules - I guess it's worth it. :ok:

Puffin 26-01-2006 05:06 PM

Ooh you got the postcard! We thought it had been lost in mail! Sweet!
:bye:

Sebatianos 13-03-2006 11:33 AM

He-hey, I just got a greeting card from Stephan who's German, but isn't Swiss, even though he's swiss!

Romano 13-03-2006 12:06 PM

I am jealous. :tomato:

But I am happy that this topic is still alive :ok:

Sebatianos 13-03-2006 12:10 PM

Well, maybe swiss could post the wrappings of the chocolates he got (if he hadn't eaten them all yet - I think they're all gone by now) in return.

And don't worry Romano, he got far less chockolated then you got cheese :D

Romano 13-03-2006 12:23 PM

I hope chocolates were of the same excellence as the cheese was :kosta:

Sebatianos 21-04-2006 03:57 PM

:tnx:

Now this was really an unexpected and most pleasent surprize! When I picked up the mail from the mailbox there was a very cheerfull looking envalope in it. When I opened it there was an even more cheerfull looking card inside. It says:
Dear Sebatianos & Rainwife, many congratulations on your marriage. May you both have a very happy and long life together with mutual respect and love for each other.

Signed by Ruben aka Reup and Mirjam.

I couldn't scan the inside of it, because it's a cute pop-up card with mice, a teddy bear and a birdy wishing us all the best, but here's the cover of it!

Again Reup, I'm deeply touched and I'm sure Mojca will be too, when she sees it. Thank you!

rainwife 14-06-2006 03:39 PM
