Sounds great Tom! I'm at work so I can't check it out but I will when I get home.

Good job :P

It doesn't necessarily has something to do with the Crusaders, but the one on the picture looks similar to the crusaders in the game. Also this picture looks such amazing, so I wanted to share it with anyone here. http://forum.giga.de/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
I'll only hold this post here for today, so be sure to get it, as I'll remove it tomorrow.

That picture's from Tribes. I think it was Boxart but it mgiht have been in the manual, not sure. I was always dissappointed because the game never had swords even though they showed them in the hype pictures.

pachoo 31-08-2004 06:17 PM

How do I use the medkits? I pressed "F1" to bring up the help screen, but using the "m" key doesn't seem to work...

Thanks.

Wilo 31-08-2004 08:12 PM

Is there a way to even out how choppy the game seems to get? kinda hard to play if things are choppy like it is right now. any way to fix this or get it less choppy?

FreeFreddy 31-08-2004 08:18 PM

There're two possibilities I can think of now:
1. Turn the sound and perhaps music too off.
2. Increase the CPU-cycles, until the choppiness stops or the emulation becomes too slow rather, then you need faster CPU then.
;)

Ioncannon 31-08-2004 08:23 PM

!!! so I can tell dos box to speed up? I got a 1.5 GHz cpu, how fast should it be set?

FreeFreddy 31-08-2004 08:33 PM

With 1.5 Ghz CPU it would probably only go up to 7000 cycles max, my is 2.4 Ghz, so it can bear up to 12000 mostly. ;)

Ioncannon 31-08-2004 08:36 PM

K thx :D

Kosta 31-08-2004 08:37 PM

More efficient is frameskipping... you can increase it by ctrl+F8, it should increase performance dramatically

Guest 31-08-2004 10:25 PM

Increasing CPU cycles did the trick. and a little frameskip. thanks for the help :D

Wilo 01-09-2004 03:17 AM

Not to double post or anything but have you noticed the annoying bugs on this thing?

i could stand the heal terminals and stuff crashing the game and all but why wont the bloody medkits work?! :( no offense but its really annoying...

FreeFreddy 01-09-2004 06:45 AM

Yes, they seem not to work - even when I got around 90% of the health, I couldn't use them...

Data 01-09-2004 08:30 AM

don't you have to press U (use) to activate them ?

FreeFreddy 01-09-2004 08:52 AM

Pressing M to use it directly or U to use it selected - both have no effect, just that sound that appears when you cannot use an item.

Wilo 01-09-2004 08:14 PM

I've tried all the methods possible. but no luck as to restoring my bloody life meter. even when im down to around 25% life it wont work

to me this really yanks the rating down a tad bit. sweet game but no heals mean its gonna be harder then normal. oh well have to make due till a fix is found or something. Its likely something to do with bugs and such

FreeFreddy 01-09-2004 10:11 PM

Nope, I guess it has something to do with this impossibility to use the healing terminals. There was a file removed that hindered the game to start altogether, so this made the game crash now when you use that healing terminals. Perhaps that also made using the medkits impossible... :( <_<

Tom Henrik 01-09-2004 10:20 PM

We'll look into it. If we can somehow fix this with a patch, we'll announce it and place it in the extras for the game.

Data 02-09-2004 12:46 AM

New archive has arived. it's smaller and actually the full version!!!!!!!!! Missing file problem fixed.
Heal points work and so do med kids.

FreeFreddy 02-09-2004 08:14 AM

Ahh, great! Now I'm going to play this cool piece of game through! http://forum.giga.de/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Great work, guys! :D

Tom Henrik 02-09-2004 01:05 PM

Geez... Crusader 1 was a real pain in the ass to get working.

Luckily, Crusader 2 works flawlessly. (We've learned a couple of tricks ;) ) And that game will be added shortly. Look out for it.

Data 02-09-2004 01:25 PM

redownload all. way too many changes. Sorry.

Tom Henrik 02-09-2004 02:21 PM

Save the videos from the old one, however ;)

The new version is without them.

And for those of you who don't see the point in downloading this new archive, well... As Data said before. This is the FULL version (without movies), the one we had up before proved to be the demo.

Hi,

I was a great fan of crusader...

Data 02-09-2004 07:03 PM

Did you read the bold text saying

NOTE: To play this game you MUST use DOSBox (see our utilities section) and you MUST mount the game on drive C (D, E, F etc. will not work).

?

Wilo 02-09-2004 08:31 PM

Sweet. Glad the games working right now hope to see Crusader II as well :ok:

Wilo 02-09-2004 09:01 PM

uhh is there a reason now all the game is now is a blackscreen when i try to play it?! menu works but gameplay screen is just black execpt for hud

Eversince 03-09-2004 08:44 AM

Thanx,
I thought dosbox was just the command prompt...
Won't make that mistake again!

Wilo 04-09-2004 06:43 PM

maybe its just my comp and its cursed windows XP but it seems to enjoy doing a sticky key on some controls. latest of thats when i was shooting a turret dead and dodging the lasers it spat. i couldnt get it under control and was forced to quit. and for some odd reason it wont let me save.......

Tom Henrik 04-09-2004 06:57 PM

Are you running the game in DOSbox? It will only run smoothly in that program. Remember you can get it from this site :)

Pos 07-09-2004 04:11 AM

Highly recommend D-Fend as a front-end for DOSBox.

Guest 10-09-2004 10:19 AM

(I posted this to the troubleshooting as well)

I'm running crusader: no remorse with DOSbox (of course...) and the D-Fend frontend. It runs fairly well, but won't let me use the save options (neither quicksave nor conventional save). When I try to save, it crashes to the "dos" screen with the following error message:

Halted file FILE/FILE.C line 61
Unable to create file. error #3

Does anyone know what's wrong?

BTW, crusader: no regret works better, lets me save - but won't play music! only sounds! I do prefer a music-less game to a save-less game, though

Tom Henrik 10-09-2004 11:16 AM

I'm not all that technical that I pretend to be, but could it be that the front end thingy somehow makes DOSbox incompatible to the game?

Crusader - No Remorse is one of those games, that walk the tight line between success and failure. If you change just a little thing with the game it will "self-destruct" and you have to start all over again. The saving option works for me with my DOSbox (I do not have that front end thing).

Another thing that you might like to hear is that (if rumours are true) DOSbox 0.62 will be released within a month.

Deus 26-09-2004 08:29 PM

The FILE/FILE.C error you're speaking of is due to there not being a SAVEGAME directory inside the Crusader folder. Create one and the game will run fine. I have just one question though: How in the $*)#@ can you get the movies to work? I set up a Win 95 box (yes, vintage) with DOS and it seems to hate me. Should I just go ahead and try to get Crusader to work on my XP computer via DOSBox or is there something I'm doing wrong?

2DMan 27-09-2004 08:50 PM

Has anyone else had a problem with the keyboard locking up? I can be playing Crusader fine, then suddenly the character get stuck on whatever I am pressing, the keyboard stops working and the mouse is the only control that works. (The keyboard stops completely, can't even access menu. The only thing that works then is ctrl-alt-delete).
My computer is a very new one, and powerful, and I am running the game through dosbox. Game speed is fine, and i have sorted the no save problem, so now this! Any ideas, anybody?

Data 28-09-2004 08:18 AM

that is a bug in dosbox.
I have a strong feeling that it will be fixed in the next dosbox version

2DMan 28-09-2004 05:31 PM

ah well,
thanks anyway.

marko river 13-10-2004 10:39 AM

I saw that there are Mp3s from Crusader - No Remorse and I was amaized. I played it long time ago, but I still remember that music was awesome. As far as I remember, avery level had different theme and rebel base had several as well. Will they be provided or I'll have to play it again to hear it?

Guest_alienstookmybeer 13-10-2004 11:40 PM

New Dosbox (0.62) was released and did indeed fix the sticky keys problem. Well done to the Dosbox team for giving XP owners the opportunity to replay this awesome game to its fullest!

Morrin 01-11-2004 09:14 AM

Sorry to bring this old thread up but how do I increase cpu cycles? That Ctrl + F12 thingie? It's darn choppy even with my 2.2G machine.

Locust Reign 02-11-2004 02:15 PM

Hi there,

I have the movies from another rip...and copied them to the FLICS directory. What now? :w00t:

Is there a way to make them work with this version?

greets

Nate 15-11-2004 05:13 PM

There's a point at which the cycles becomes too much to keep up with and the game starts playing crummy again. My WinXP machine will run most old games pretty smoothly at 12000 to 15000 cycles, with a game that doesn't follow the rules and demands 20000 instead every once in a while. Bring DOSBox to 10000 or so and start the game, then keep increasing the cycles until the music starts acting up. Then bring it back down and remember where the limit is.

Strangely, DOSBox decreases cycles MUCH faster than it increases them.

And one of the MP3s for Crusader 1 is broken. Darn.

the rate of both is configurable in the configfile of dosbox.

Rogue 15-11-2004 05:24 PM

Using D-Fend you can edit at what rate you will decrease/increase the cycles.

Tom 29-11-2004 07:54 PM

can anyone help? I can play crusader fine, except that there's no background. All I get is the charactors in the game, and blackness. Does anyone know a way to fix this?

Rogue 29-11-2004 08:01 PM

You have to post more info. What operating system, are you using DOSBox, etc...

Tom 30-11-2004 03:47 PM

I'm using windows XP with the latest version of DosBox. I've downloaded the latest version of crusader from this site, without the videos.

Jester2k 01-12-2004 10:08 PM

Is there anyway to get the movies for Crusader 1 and 2? They just kinda helped the story along

Tom Henrik 02-12-2004 07:00 AM

There was some issues with the videos. Meaning that the game could not be played in any OS with them. The guys over at DOSBox is working had to see if they can make DOSBox create an environment that can play the videos.

alienstookmybeer 06-12-2004 11:25 PM

Huh? I have the original game and got the videos to play in Dosbox (had to switch the options to small video or something like that).

Sachin 10-01-2005 04:34 PM

hi everybody..i have just downloaded Crusader no remorse game from abandonia..i am try to play it in pure dos but getting an error message mentioning missing of a file named ASYLUM.DLL....can anybody help me on that..is this game compatible with pure dos or it works only with Dos box as mentioned on the abandonis site..
it will be nice if u cud send replies to sachen_ar@rediffmail.com

Gigantor 23-01-2005 11:57 AM

Great game. I've beaten it in the past, but recently dusted it off after I saw the listing for the game here.

Dosbox does an OK job with it. It plays the videos fine but it does get choppy from time to time. I changed the cycles to 10-15k and it is playable.

JoeJackson 29-01-2005 07:22 PM

:help: When I try to run the game, it keeps saying Asylum.dll is missing, plz help!!!

JJXB 29-01-2005 08:28 PM

re-download it and reinstall it.

JoeJackson 29-01-2005 09:23 PM

It Works, but its really laggy, how do u fix it, and how do u make DOSBox Fullscreen?

JJXB 29-01-2005 09:26 PM

if your going to use dosbox, you need a decent computer and to make it fullscreen you use alt+enter while dosbox is active

Christopher Beavis 01-02-2005 02:47 PM

Stalkersky 04-02-2005 06:03 PM

Hi, freedos is compatible with cutemouse (a DOS mouse), in their website there is a large FAQ for gamers... Im not a programmer ou something like that, the setup was very easy. Why emulators if the real thing is on? :D

peace.

ps. I have dosbox in other PC and I love it...

Guest 04-02-2005 07:57 PM

the facts for gamers isn't really helping me. i cant even find the right file for this stuff, what did you do?

bmode 04-02-2005 08:07 PM

ya, how do you install this thing, it seems to be what i need, i just don't know how to install it like there is a diskette and a cdrom, and when i download them and extract them it says windows cannot open the file, i dont understand. how did u get it working for xp?

Hi guys. I still dont know why there are no videos.
I run the game in dosbox v.63, and all of the video files are there as .txt, but the videos are abruptly skipped when i try to initiate them in-game. Im very confused. I have a good computer that should be able to run them.

Please Help!!!!
Erik

PS: The Guys at PC Gamer and Computer Gaming World were wanting to know how to get Crusader to run. You guys should give them an E-mail.

Hi guys,

About freedos files and install: go to http://www.freedos.org/freedos/files/ and just click on ISO Image. This is a image CD file, so you can burn it with NERO or other software like that... In this version was added a FreeDOS environment runnable from cdrom, just install. The config details (mouse, cd-rom, sound etc) you can get in FreeDOS for Gamers

Good lucky! :ok:

Jazar 10-02-2005 09:47 PM

Please if anyone has the video files or know where to get them can you please let me know here or at jazar357@hotmail.com? I loved the super cheezy FMVs that this game has and as great as the gameplay is, it's just not the whole package without the bad acting. Please let me know.

As for the saving issue just make sure there is a folder in Crusader called SAVEGAME. Happy gaming!

Yobor 12-02-2005 04:44 PM

Dreadu, try upping the CPU cycles on the dosbox by pressing alt-12 until the game runs smoothly.

MTLyon5 13-02-2005 02:59 AM

Hello everyone. I just had to join these forums after finding our my favorite old game Crusader was here.

I got save to work (thanks to the one who mentioned making a save folder)

I was just curious if there is indeed any known way to play the movies. They added soo much character and flavor to this game that I can't foresee playing them with as much joy without them.

Is there no way yet? Just have to wait for the brilliant minds behind DOSBox to upgrade to allow movies?

Thanks in advance

MTLyon5 13-02-2005 08:31 AM

Or if anyone has them, please send files on over to me at MTLyon5@hotmail.com

Since it seems many get them to work on DOSBox. Just half the game is missing without the videos to really draw you into the world.

Psych0F0x 13-02-2005 09:48 AM

i've got the original cd, so if anyone could tell me how to get the movies for you guys?

Tom Henrik 13-02-2005 10:06 AM

First of all:
Try to make a CD-RIP of the CD, then RAR it and tell me the size. :ok:

MTLyon5 13-02-2005 05:19 PM

I'd love it if you got the movies ready to send over. All I'd need then is how to place them in the file properly and hopefully they should work?

Hope I wasn't beating an old topic, just those movies really made the game.

Guest 13-02-2005 08:43 PM

Psych0F0x, Thanks for helping us out! Are all the vids located in the FLICS folder? You might just be able to compress that folder instead of the whole game. Of course you could just iso the whole CD and compress that.

Lets all keep in touch to share these cheesy fmvs

why doesn't someone reverse-engineer the code and change it so its actually playable in windows?

Psych0F0x 14-02-2005 11:52 AM

i found my cd again, what should i do with the movies? how do you want it? could you use it if you would just put them in the flics map?

Jazar 14-02-2005 12:52 PM

I think it should work by just adding the vids to the FLICS folder. How big is that folder RARed (compressed)?

Psych0F0x 14-02-2005 01:27 PM

i managed to rar it to 307 MB

MTLyon5 15-02-2005 12:29 AM

Feel free to e-mail the movies to me and I'll test out the idea of tossing them into the folder. I'm excited, those movies really made the game fun stuff. REALLY appreciate everyone's help in this.

goblins 15-02-2005 09:42 AM

hope it works out to big for this site though i would think

Psych0F0x 15-02-2005 12:50 PM

its on jazar's server now =) Btw, my crusader no remorse cd has the crusader no regret label on it :P

MTLyon5 15-02-2005 05:03 PM

Someone send a link to this website?

Jazar 16-02-2005 12:45 PM

Simply putting the files in the FLICS directory didn't seem to work. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear 'em but otherwise I think we need the entire .ISO

Hi. My No Remorse cd also had a No Regret label on, and it didnt work at all. Got it swapped for a correct cd. Since then I cant get past level 8 (I think) because after I go up a lift(elevator), the doors open but the screen remains black, with just the targeting recticle showing. I can move it and fire, but the explosions dont even show. Is this an issue for a patch? A similar thing happens to my No Regret. I have tried it on two different machines, and also my friends No Regret cd. I am really frustrated and rather quite sad that I cant play it.

They have the *BEST* music for a menu ever!!! (IMHO ;-)

Tom Henrik 17-02-2005 12:32 PM

Did you try running the game in DOSBox?

Yobor 17-02-2005 07:28 PM

Does this mean we can get the vids now? :w00t:

Psych0F0x 17-02-2005 09:12 PM

I hope so =) I think I have to re-upload it cause Jazar told me the rar was corrupted but i'll hear from him after he downloads it again

I'm Dling this right now. I hope i don't get disconnected from the internet until it completes. i liked no regret more though, but i'm havin a bit of trouble figuring out whats wrong. it's searching for file static\typeflag.dat in file/file.c i've noticed others have had simliar troulbes.

geez, this really just seems to be a quirky game. i had trouble getting both of them to work back in the day when i owned them.

for those interested, i'm running an old pc that is got true dos support, with win98 platform, (although not being used at the moment of course ;)

although, i'm gonna try out this dos box thing i hear is such a miracle worker (i hope it is, old games are hell to get started! XP is not fossil friendly!) since i couldnt get the games to work on my "true" computer, i might as well try dosbox on winxp... :Tom:

main thing i didnt like about this game was it seems there is less stuff to blow up, and you get a semiautomatic pistol instead of that sweet assault rifle that you get in the other game, the second one. oh yeah, and i remember falling in the toxic waste when an explosion hits the bridge int he first map, haha!

cant wait to play, love places liek this site, this ones my fav. thanks Tom!

Cowowar 08-03-2005 04:49 AM

mmm. i like this game a lot, i think the controls are kinda awkward, tho. :ok: :ok:

troop18546 08-03-2005 03:43 PM

I had downloaded Crusader 1 and 2 from abandonia, but thay dont work for me. WITF? :eeeeeh:

Cowowar 11-03-2005 03:34 AM

won't let me save, it crashes when i try.

Yobor 11-03-2005 09:56 PM

You have to create your own save file. If you read in other places you can find this out.......
Just make a new folder called "SAVEGAMES"

Yobor 13-03-2005 01:38 AM

Hey all! This might already be posted somewhere in the forum, but this is an awesome Crusader Fan Club site! Enjoy :ok: !
Crusader stuff at Angelfire

DeathSpark 15-03-2005 02:36 AM

WOW! Crusader, I remember this one on PSOne. Didn't knew it was on PC thought...

Yobor 16-03-2005 12:31 AM

The PSOne version of this game sucks. I have played it. Plus, computer games are ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS better than console, no matter what anyone says.

More Info? What are you trying to run them on? DOSBox works fine with this game, but nothing else does.

ReubenSala 22-03-2005 09:57 PM

Hey guys, I remember this game when I was a kid and I LOVED IT! But it must be missing some files.

1 gig of RAM
1.8 AMD Athlon
GeForce FX 5200 256mb

I run DOSbox, install, the menu shows up, I choose my skill and the screen goes black >:( Anyway to fix this? Please help me out, i've reinstalled and the FASTFLEX.C thing is gone but now the screen just goes black.

Yobor 23-03-2005 12:05 AM

Try upping the CPU cycles on the DOSBox by hitting ctrl-f12. It should be set around 11000. If this doesn't work, re-download the game.

Also, is the game in C? It HAS to be in C in order to work.

ReubenSala 23-03-2005 12:43 AM

Nevermind I got it, it was the intro video that wasn't working but I just pushed some buttons and it worked :)

PoeticRockerST 23-03-2005 11:54 PM

Hey all i just got the full version with the videos, but now the graphics are messed up as shown in this pic:

http://img210.exs.cx/img210/7645/crusader0009da.png

How i fix it?

PoeticRockerST 23-03-2005 11:56 PM

Yobor 25-03-2005 01:19 PM

I think I read about this problem somewhere.......
Are you using DOSBox still?

I do not remember well enough back in the day to know what some of the bugs with the original version are.

(The only bug I remember is from the second one, where if you tried to use the cheats from the first one, it teleports you to a room full of the head boss. If you cheated really fast and killed them all, the game would just crash :-))

Its all good now I fixed it, I just reinstalled the rar files and copied the videos over. The game is a blast just like how I remember it from the mid 90s. Thanks a lot abandonia! (thumbs up)

The FILE/FILE.C error you're speaking of is due to there not being a SAVEGAME directory inside the Crusader folder. Create one and the game will run fine.
Tried this, does not work. Tried with SAVEGAME and SAVEGAMES folder(with the caps even). C drive. Any ideas?

Yobor 26-03-2005 08:51 PM

In your Crusader main folder (the one with the exe file) creat a new folder called SAVEGAMES. If it still doesn't work after you try this again, I have no idea.

Crusader 29-03-2005 12:17 PM

Please, could someone put here an "FINAL MESSAGE OF WORKING CRUSADER"
U could explain how to make savegames and where to get videos and make them to work in one message. thanks.

Yobor 30-03-2005 12:36 AM

Alright bud here it is:

Download Crusader into C ( I use a file called C:\dosgames\crusader\crusader)
There are no videos with the game :not_ok:
Run the game in DOSBox or normal DOS. ctrl-12 to speed up the game (It works well around 11000.

To Make Savegames. Go to the directory where you put the game (for me, C:\dosgames\crusader\crusader, and make a new folder called "SAVEGAME"

Yobor 04-04-2005 04:24 PM

Shite, my bad.

tuapuk 09-05-2005 05:41 PM

hi, anyone can share the dosbox conf file settings?
i not able to get mine to work, not sure which settings to tweak.

thanks, :)

Yobor 09-05-2005 10:01 PM

Well, what exactly is happening? Like, describe your troubles.

tuapuk 10-05-2005 12:29 PM

oh.. my bad. i thot if you can run, using ur dosbox conf file would do the trick.

i've tried both Remorse & Regret, using dosbox with its original conf file and also conf file which i've tweaked.

No Remorse error reads:
Unable to open file (null), in file FILE\FASTFLEX.C, line 38
(in the red screen, and a:\crusader shows)

No Regret error reads:
Unable to open file c:static\fixed.dat, in file FILE\FASTFLEX.C, line 38

(i've created SAVEGAME folder)

conf file settings i've tried tweaking:
fulldouble=true/false
fullfixed=true/false
output=ddraw
hwscale=1 and 1.50

cycles=5000,10000,15000

thanks,

Hi guys,

About freedos files and install: go to http://www.freedos.org/freedos/files/ and just click on ISO Image. This is a image CD file, so you can burn it with NERO or other software like that... In this version was added a FreeDOS environment runnable from cdrom, just install. The config details (mouse, cd-rom, sound etc) you can get in FreeDOS for Gamers

i tried freedos too.. can't even get pass their instructions. the problem is reading their guide doesn't tell you how to configure freedos.. they tell you u need to configure sounds, mouse, drive.. but HOW?

fed up..

Tom (admin) :bye: , i hav the original CDs, would you like me to image it? but i hope you can help get it to work in winxp.

bah.. lemme find my CDs and try again. :wall:

Yobor 10-05-2005 07:19 PM

Wait. You aren't using the ones from this site? Well, anyway, if you were, you would HAVE to put the game in C.

tuapuk 11-05-2005 11:11 AM

yup i got it from here.. and put the game in C.

now i'm gonna dig up my CDs

tuapuk 11-05-2005 12:00 PM

ok have imaged crusader and rar it.

rite-click on the folder and it says

422 MB (443,156,347 bytes)

ALL Origin games have been removed from the site.

blastradius14 10-06-2005 02:33 PM

I own the CD of no Remorse, but the inner plastic thing got a huge crack in it somehow and most of the CD doesn't work anymore. If I can pull the flic files off for anybody, I would enjoy that if they could email me either the download rar of no Remorse or no Regret (or both) at isaacroberts316@hotmail.com. I loved the game so much I used to completly gut a suckier computer and rebuild it until I could play it. Then I would partition the hard drive and copy the cd to drive D or something. For some reason, the Dos that comes with Win98 can't read CDs. So I get around that....

I'm would love to be able to play the gun-toting, mindless slaughter once again.

Gee... horrible last line there. Anyway, post the much smaller file with no music and sound effects if thats at all possible. Besides, that would take forever to post something that is full size.

Yobor 10-06-2005 02:44 PM

No, you guys, I think that sending the movie files only to other people might be ok, but we can't distribute the actual game anymore. It makes me sad. I seriously cried the day this game came off Abandonia.

blastradius14 10-06-2005 07:49 PM

Gee. So because I found this site too late I can't be like you? Who downloaded it before? Origin has been a dead company for years, this site only put that restriction on it recently. (relatively) So what makes people getting it from friends any different, especially if they downloaded it? You people make me sad.

I think you're missing the point here. It's completely irrelevant whether or not Origin went out of business ages ago. It was bought by Electronic Arts, and EA is an ESA member, so you're not allowed to host their games without ESA's permission. Abandonia had that permission until a couple of months ago, when ESA decided to withdraw it. If "people" get the game from "friends", that's none of Abandonia's business, really, as long as they don't do it here. But it would be illegal to put up the games for download without permission. So yes, I'm afraid you were just too late.

blastradius14 10-06-2005 11:08 PM

Apparently I am also unable to recover Fixed.flx from the Static folder. If anyone is kind enough to send this to me, I will certainly try to be as helpful as possible.

Already I have made a rar of FLICS for uploading, though I could break it down if necessary. But before I can make a SOUND rar I need sound.flx.

tuapuk 11-06-2005 07:31 AM

yep iy's been years since i las played it.. still trying to get my copy to work in winxp.
no luck yet..

blastradius14 15-06-2005 05:32 PM

How did you guys make the game into a non-CD using game? Some kind of alteration to the config maybe? If you feel generous, either post the knowledge here or email me please so I can do that for my own cd. Dosbox doesn't seem to like me with my cd.

Keenan 16-06-2005 04:56 PM

Hey everyone, My name is Keenan, and I'm probably the biggest Crusader fan in the whole world (Here's evidence: http://www.pcgamer.com/forum/viewtop...=3514&start=0) and I'm making the best Crusader site ever (www.echosector.com), it's not up yet, but I hope it will be by September 22nd (10th anniversary of No Remorse)

I'm not really against abandonware, but this game is simply fantastic, you must buy it off of eBay or whatever, and see the storyline, fantastic characters and acting.

*e-mails removed for safety reasons*

blastradius14 19-06-2005 06:58 PM

Finally got the thing to work without a hitch. Except for the sound.flx, which I am borrowing from Regret right now. Certain sounds like opening barriers sound funny, like when you blast a lady in a swivel chair with a GL303.

If you are using your own cd, you can copy the cd to a directory and label it something like
C:\oldgames\remorse
then in dosbox's config at the bottom type
mount D (or anything but C) C:\oldgames\remorse
now type (at the dos-box screen)
mount C C:\oldgames
and run the install off of your copied-to-disk cd

this is very neccessary to run this game from a non-dl'd game, but you can also set it up to run from cd, but my cd itself sucks.

If anyone needs the FLICS folder, or AMF files for music I can email a rar of either to you. Don't know if the flics will work for you, but they work for me.

Scorch 22-06-2005 05:31 PM

Cool Game. One of the best.. Except some broken things.

Lionheart1827 23-06-2005 02:48 AM

Hi, I've had my original No Remorse cd since 95 and ever since i got rid of my first computer(which ran it great back then) I've never been able to get it to work. with the help of dosbox i was able to install it and then right when I tried to run it, it said "couldnt locate file <null> in fiel/fastflex" or something along these lines. I skimmed through these pages a little bit, but i figured if i just asked id get a response. Sorry if this has bee mentioned, im kind of in a hurry.

Thanks.

blastradius14 23-06-2005 05:08 AM

Yeah, i need to fix it though. You can't read the part that says go ahead, call me a freak. See what happens LOL

Lionheart1827 23-06-2005 06:28 AM

Aright im still getting that stupid "file/fastflex" error whenever i try to run the game in dos box. this is really making me mad(not really, actually sad :( ) My cd is in perfect condition, no scratches at all.

Lionheart1827 23-06-2005 07:46 AM

never mind, I got it. I just installed it regularly and then just manually copied all of the data files from the cd into the installed directory. worked like charm. thanks for the help and for keeping this classic alive guys! :ok:

blastradius14 27-06-2005 04:21 PM

Yeah, I used to do that on my old 3gig hard drive, partition a drive just to play it in dos. But now I don't have to do that, as dos-box is my old-games best friend :ok:

Crusader has to be one of the best games that will EVER be made :D

Ozon 23-07-2005 10:06 AM

Hiii There. I have got problem with my soiund card. I have SB Live! 1024. To run the game Iam using dos boot disk with sound drivers in directory C:\dosdrv büt the driver loads really weird values like : I/O adress is : 9600 and IRQ channel 0. And those values are unacceptable in Crusader setup :help: . cen you hel me? I have tried to manually configure the .ini files, but nothing helped. Thanks for your replies. :bye:

Ozon 23-07-2005 02:46 PM

It's OK now. I solved by myself. If anyone has the same problem just ask. :ok:

blastradius14 23-07-2005 06:01 PM

If you were using a decent recent computer dos box works good too. Of course, any computer in dos runs Crusader even better :ok:

Amayirot Akago 23-07-2005 08:39 PM

I got the full CD for this game, and it runs perfectly in my DosBox. Awesome game, lots of stuff to blow up ;) No Regret, while a bit more of the same, is just as great, and both games are very sadistic to boot  Nothing like instant freezing or charbroiling an enemy soldier :roflol: :guns:

blastradius14 27-07-2005 03:29 PM

The greatest pleasure of slaughtering soldiers is never seeing the battle lines in real life. Instead of slaughtering hordes of troopers and mechs, you have to risk dieing. There is no save game, no hysterical fall into the pool of acid, or watching of yourself falling in some never ending hole in the floor. There are no energy shields, and the closest thing to armor from explosives might be a tank.

The moral?

GO KICK SOMMORE behind! LOL

And hope you will never have to don the robes of war

Outlander 28-07-2005 06:50 PM

Okay I run DOSBox 0.63 and I can install Crusader No Remores (I bought an original in a flee market) but I get the

Unable to Open file (null), in file FILE\FASTFLEX.C, line 38.

error during loading of the game..... I know people are getting around this because they all write back "ohhh i got it to work now" the problem is no one has posted an actual fix.

thanks for your help guys

Outlander 29-07-2005 03:55 AM

okay I can boot up...it ends up I was editing the dosbox.conf txt file not the dosbox.conf config file. who knew there would be two files with the same name. I've had some issues with the intro but I can get past that and I've fixed cycles up to 11000 so It dosn't bog down and lock up on the video sequences.

But now when the gameplay starts I just have the characters chiiling with a black background. Characters have tracers when they move....

I heard you can try reinstalling or copying the vid files off of your cd but that's not working. I reinstalled the vids to my "D:\oldgames\remorse but nothing changed. I also tried to copy them over to the C drive but There is no Flicks folder in the C:\Crusader folder to place them in. I have tried full/partial install and Small/large videos. personal i don't see how editing the in game videos would help alter game play graphics but I'm trying everyting here.

thanks for helping with this guys.

Oh just to let you know I'm running through DosBox, AMD64 1.99, 768MB, ATI RadeonXpress200M w/ 128MB .

blastradius14 29-07-2005 03:16 PM

Alright. Dude, you are using dos-box, so set a file on your C drive to be the "installation" folder, then set a folder to be the "C" drive.

Like this:

mount D C:\oldgames\remorse (the file oldgames can be anything)
mount C C:\oldgames (keep the file oldgames the same as above)

now copy the cd to the "D" drive folder, and run it's install from dos-box.

This will work, man.

Also, I think with dos-box you can only use small video. Not certain, as I use the cd too, but my game runs fine when the files are copied to disk.

Outlander 29-07-2005 04:51 PM

very clear instruction but it dosn't solve the problem of the Black Play area background .... kinda hard to play when you can't see walls and stuff. I havn't had any issues installing the game . I do install through DOSBox and I have edited the config file to look for my CD files which were copied onto my C Drive (i've used your exact file names to make sure i wasn't fudging something up).

So basicly my problem is Crusader won't load level maps.... sprites work fine.

If you don't know how to fix it that's cool... Crusader was always a picky game even back in the 90s.

blastradius14 29-07-2005 08:02 PM

Try messing with the frameskipping. Some times when the display is too slow it will do that and leave duplicate trails. I had this problem before for a little while too, but I don't know how I fixed it.

Wanting to is not gonna make it so :D

Go download it somewhere else. I'm sure you'll find it somewhere.

blastradius14 06-09-2005 12:44 AM

You wanna know where to get it? Earn some money and go buy it.

Sides, that way you get to keep the movies and music :ok:

Yobor 06-09-2005 07:37 PM

You can't buy it, TOOL
It's not sold anywhere. It's simply protected by the ESA.

Crusader Music 11-09-2005 08:59 AM

CD Access still has Crusader: No Remorse for sale.

I have always loved the music in both these games; does anyone know where I can get the rest of the soundtrack (there are only 3 tracks on this site). Thanks!

Yobor 12-09-2005 12:06 AM

That one is different. We still had Crusader while that one was up, t00l. It's the ESA that done it :-(

Hi I have a problem with running Crusader in the DOS, I have the start disk but after I run the game comtuter shows a fatal error. I think it may by casused by a CPU. A also tried run the game in dosbox but it is slowing.
I have Athlon 64 3000+. Help me if you could.

Yobor 03-10-2005 10:12 PM

For the slowness in dosbox up the CPU cycles by pressing alt-f12. It runs well on my computer at around 10,000.

Victims Of A Down 27-11-2005 01:30 AM

How do I download it? I can't seem to find the link.

Yobor 27-11-2005 03:09 AM

Right here bud:

DOSBox it's the first one.

Or, if you meant how to download Crusader, well, you can't. It's protected by the ESA.

Yobor 01-12-2005 12:24 AM

Hehe. Yeah I remember the cheats after even so long I loved this game so much..

loosecannon16

And then like alt/cntrl combos or something, but the main point is I remembered the code.

blastradius14 01-12-2005 11:07 PM

Be sure to try this one once in no regret too :tai:

Its easier than you think to go through 100 rounds of a weapon.

Yobor 10-01-2006 08:54 PM

Yeah I realise it isn't Loosecannon16. Its Jassica16 in the first one. Cntrl F-10 is Invincibility and H will toggle the cheat mover.

Guest 05-02-2006 05:15 PM

Hey.. Can u help me? I've got Celeron Tualatin 1,2ghz and the game runs really slow in DosBOX. I've increased the CPU Cycles to 7k but then game lags and the sound doesn't work properly. I tried Frameskip but it looks like it doesn't work...

sry for my shitty english

Yobor 05-02-2006 05:20 PM

This game runs well at 11k cycles. If your computer still lags after you reach that, then it isn't DOSBox's problem it is your machine's. Your machine sounds like it should work though....

Guest 05-02-2006 05:37 PM

Hmm.. U dont understand me. When the cycles are very high (above 7k) the game... just.. For example: When I press one time left the Crusader should turn 1 time but he turns 3 times. Or other example: I press forward he should make 1 step forward but he makes 3. On lower cycles this doesn't happen.

Guest 05-02-2006 06:15 PM

I meant Silencer not Crusader :bleh:

Yobor 05-02-2006 06:37 PM

 That has never EVER happened to me. I'm sorry.
And it definitely does not work on such a low cycles setting as 7k.
I'm sorry but I have absolutely no clue as to why that would happen.

Guest 05-02-2006 07:14 PM

I have this is all games. I think... When cycles are to high the games act weird..

Maybe I should change something in confing? Is fullscreen resolution 1024x768 good?

Quote:

From confing:
# cycles -- Amount of instructions dosbox tries to emulate each millisecond.
#Setting this higher than your machine can handle is bad!

Maybe 7k is too high for my machine? :(
Try to set very very high cycles when u play and see what happens? Maybe u will have the same effect?

Guest 05-02-2006 07:44 PM

Hm.. I've tried again at 8,5k and it didn't act weird. But when I'd raise cycles it started to lag and the music lagged too. On 8,5k it slows down when there is many enemies.

Guest 07-02-2006 01:20 PM

I have a problem.. I loved this game back in the days... seing it here on abandonia just made me yearning to play it again. but then the first problem happened... Its not for download.. but.. you cant buy it here in Denmark either.. but its still protected? why protect a game that cannot be sold? How do I get it?

gregor 07-02-2006 01:39 PM

have you tried searching the internet? maybe some other site has it.

U96 07-02-2006 01:54 PM

yes Ive tried, but I really didnt find anything usefull.. and I went through like 200 different links provided by google.
I contacted Eletronic Arts who bought Origin who made the Crusader games, and they protect the game, but they also informed me that its not possible to buy the game.. okay.. so its not possible to download it.. and its not possible to but it.. great ?

damn  i really used to love this game.. unfair to bring it on abandonia just to make me cry

U96 07-02-2006 02:37 PM

if anyone have the game in private on their computer, would be cool if you could transfer it to me :help: - BUT ILLEGAL, so don't even think about it!

my connection is 2 mb so should not take to long time.. or.. I just want this game.. :sniper:

Rogue 07-02-2006 02:55 PM

This might lead to ban or some other admin measures.

If game is protected, then you should not ask someone to file/transfer it to you!

If you like to own it, then check this linky. ;)

U96 07-02-2006 03:01 PM

oh cool... we have the game, so we shouldnt worry about you
I ASKED... and whats with banning me for asking ? :ok:
and .. you didnt have to edit my post, and make me look like a 13 year old :ot:
but.. Im happy for those of you who actually have the game.. must be wonderfull.. enjoy :bye:

btw. thanks for the link to ebay :max:

Well, all people who try to get ESA protected games get something similar (it's to discourage them). I had to edit your post, because you were calling for software exchange - which is not permitable.

I re-edited it - if this makes you feel better.

You asked people to transfer the game - that's sharing protected software - not allowed.

And you were not banned, but warned that you would be if you keep this up. I guess I was just so sick of people constantly asking for ESA protected stuff that I may have overreacted a bit.

Rogue 07-02-2006 07:21 PM

Well, I bought it long time ago, first for PS, and then for PC. Nice game and if it means that much to you, you should consider buying it. ;)

Guest 15-03-2006 12:22 PM

This is simply one of the best game ever. I don't think i played this and the othere crusader game as much as anything else (ok zelda and meteroid to snes then) I am so sad there is no 3 in the seriers.
Might be aswell probably would have been in full 3D fps style.... shame on you.

blastradius14 17-03-2006 03:58 AM

Shame on who for what?

If Origin had continued to be a company to this day, I bet we would be playing the 5th 3rd person annihilator game right now.

ShawnDude 09-04-2006 02:56 AM

For those still having problems getting this game to work from the original CD. Here is what I did to get it to work after many attempts. I am using d-Fend v2 Front End and DOSBox 0.65. This is a detailed explaination on how I got it to work for me and it should work for others.

Create a game folder to store your games in, I used C:\Program Files\D-Fend\Games\

Create a folder to copy your CD to, I used C:\Program Files\D-Fend\Games\CrusaderCD\

Copy all files from the CD to the CrusaderCD folder.

Using D-Fend setup DOSBox. Using the Wizard to setup:
Profile Name: Crusader: No Remorse
Checked Close DOSBox after game exit
Game EXE is C:\Program Files\D-Fend\Games\CrusaderCD\CRUSADER.EXE (use this for now so D-Fend will allow you to proceed, this will need edited later)
Setup EXE is C:\Program Files\D-Fend\Games\CrusaderCD\INSTALL.EXE
Next
Cycles need set for your system. I used 12000 cause I saw that posted elsewhere.
Next
Add
Select Drive, C:\Program Files\D-Fend\Games\CrusaderCD\
Checked Enabled Input/Output Control
Mounted Drive Letter D
OK
Add
Select Drive, C:\Program Files\D-Fend\Games\
Checked Enabled Input/Output Control
Mounted Drive Letter C
OK
Next

Next
Finished
In D-Fend window, Right Click on Crusader: No Remorse and select Edit Profile
Autoexec tab, Check Override Game Start
OK
Double Click on Crusader: No Remorse
You will get a DOS Prompt
D:
Install
Proceed thru the install, I used FULL Video and SB16 Sound
Exit DOSBox
Back to D-Fend, Right Click on Crusader: No Remorse and select Edit Profile
Change the Game EXE to C:\Program Files\D-Fend\Games\Crusader\CRUSADER.EXE
Autoexec tab, Uncheck Override Game Start
OK
Double Click on Crusader: No Remorse
Enjoy! :D

blastradius14 17-04-2006 05:09 AM

you want SB pro, not sb16.

Also, cycles vary due to computer uberness differences.

This looks incredibly familiar... Check the previous pages and see how many times I posted something like that LOL

Guest 12-05-2006 05:21 AM

Hi. I have the original Crusader: No Remorse CD.

I followed the exact instructions of Shawn above, except I used SB pro like blastradius said.

I've been trying to get this game to work with DOSbox for a few days now. I have a 2.0ghz processor, and Windows XP SP2.

The sound is incredibly choppy. The video runs fine, but the sound is horrible.

Anyone?

blastradius14 07-06-2006 04:27 AM

Hrmmm, What is your Cycles/frameskip at? Higher frameskips seem to make the little tin man walk funny, and sometimes the music chops out.

HamburgerBoyt 08-07-2006 11:16 PM

I've been playing Crusader: No Remorse for a while now but can't seem to get out of this one area. You teleport into a large room and the teleporter doesn't allow you to go back. If you go up the elevator there is an orange key card which you can use on two locks, but neither of them seem to help. There is a door with a force field blocking it, but only the door opens when using either of the switches, making you stuck in this room. Here are two pictures showing the door I'm talking about.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/Ham...y/crusader1.jpg

I wish 14-07-2006 11:40 AM

If anyone made a 3rd in the crusader series with multiplayer ability i think i would make a mess in my pants. ^_^

Hmmmm 19-07-2006 03:08 PM

Its been 5 years or more since i played this game but i think one of the computers on the platform behind you up in the air when operated deactivates the force field.

This is just to stop you cheating like me and blowing a shortcut in the door and skipping half the lvl if you are feeling lazy. :sneaky:

StupidHippy 20-07-2006 11:31 PM

I just found a retail version used on amazon.com! :brain:

Paid 4 and waiting for the cd in the mail.

Thats total bull that EA wont let it out of their archives.

Did ripping the videos work for u guys ? I can try again if it didnt.

But as soon as i have it working Ill put it on torrentspy.

Ive never used a emulator before so Ill prolly need idiotsupport ewhen the time comes

I have the same problem, really wish you had posted what you did to fix it instead of just saying "works now."

I've got the original game disk, running DOSbox 6.5 on my WinXP machine.

Someone please tell me how to get past this, the game does not install/create a "FILE" folder, nor does it work when I create one myself.

Thanks in advance,

Splintakill 14-01-2007 04:23 AM

All I have to do is look at the title to know its a good game....Cuz I played it when it come out of PS1

JimmyJ 14-01-2007 05:14 AM

It came out on ps1?? And man, i'd love a video rip because i ahve ertail but there is a scratch that messed up a movie file and when it trys to play it the game crashes :(

belfast-child 22-01-2007 11:40 AM

:sos:

I played Crusader 1 when it first came out and spent several month having fun with it. My friend and i used to compete in a cool game : how far can you get without saving. Doing so i replay the first four level many (i mean many) times. I got to half of level 5 and my friend ended up beating me by finishing that level.

I also played Crusader 2 but a lot less. It came out for xmas that year and had a cool christmas song at the begining.

Now i still have both games but don't know how to have them to work on XP. Can anyone help me? Or can i download a version here that i can play on dosbox which i already use for King's quest and all? I tried to install my cds from Crusader : No remorse via dosbox but it didn't work. I am no comp wiz but if someone could tell me how i can play that great game once more it would be fully appreciated.

Thaks in advance,

Play on!

You say you couldn't install the game from your CD... what was the exact problem?
Did you mount the CD drive (or, alternatively, the ISO image) correctly?

First of, thanks for your response. I feel less lonely now ;-)

In fact the game installs but nothing is working at normal speed everything (sound included) is repeated many many times. The origin logo, the v-mail at the begining and of course the game play. It is virtually impossible to play. I would make a move and see my silencer do it VERY slowly and repeatedly. The first worker i meet says "your your our our not rnot otsupo supo suposed posed to be to be be here here"... Argh ill let you see if im supposed to be here as soon as the game works fine!

Thx for your help

The Fifth Horseman 23-01-2007 12:28 PM

Increase the cycles at which Dosbox is running.
If your machine has problems handling high enough cyclecount to make the game run smooth, change core to Dynamic and increase frameskip.
Also, you might try making an ISO of the disc and using it instead of your actual drive through the IMGMOUNT command. I know from my own experience that this can help in such situations.

Well, thanks again. Increasing the cycles did the trick. Now i can play the game again and go back to some fond memories.

And i know one worker who met my gun and paid for all the wait...

hi, can somebode help me to get the game?
(FTp Adress, file transfer....)

The Fifth Horseman 07-05-2007 11:58 AM

This game is under protection of ESA (Entertainment Software Association) and it CAN NOT BE DOWNLOADED!
We also can't provide you with information on where or how to get it.

You can find more about The ESA here. If you ended up here you probably requested a game from one of the game production companies that are members of The ESA.

You can find the list of ESA members here and get in touch with the company who's game you would like to obtain.

Any further inquiries regarding this matter can be directed here.

Guest 18-05-2007 12:03 PM

Ahh ^^ i remember this game, played it years ago, think i still have it in a box somewhere.

Allthough the one i have is the ultra rare one ;) (well, i dont know anyone else personally who has the game :P so could just be me) where the game is No Remorse :) but the cd is label'd No Regret.

jsanity 31-08-2007 05:29 PM

Hi, if I recall correctly the game allowed us to import .MOD files and have those played during gameplay. I went to download the music then but found only MP3 files! Could someone release the original .MOD files, if they exist? I really want those instead of the Mp3s, since I write in a similar file format. I hope this doesn't fall under the category of "We cannot help you obtain the game".

Guest 02-09-2007 10:12 PM

Does anyone know how to get the videos working on this?

I have the original on cd but using a copy aquired by other means which has the videos but any time i play the game in dosbox it skips the videos

Also i msessed around with the settings of both dosbox and one of the crusaider config files and now i'm missing sound aswell :(

If anyone can gimme a hand getting this loaded with vids it'd be much appreiciated

Japo 02-09-2007 10:45 PM

In DOSBox you need to mount the CD or else the game won't have access to it, use the MOUNT command. See DOSBox's README.TXT for details but this should work if you CD drive letter is D:

Code:

mount d d:\ -t cdrom -label CRUSADER
As for the sound you can first try in-game accessing the options from the game menu. If that doesn't work, edit CRUSADER.CFG and make sure there are lines reading like this (for DOSBox's default sound card settings and if the CD is mounted in DOSBox as the D: drive):

Code:

sound=on
music=on
port=0x220
irq=7
dma=1
soundcard=3
...
cdletter=d
flicpath=\flics

Don't add these lines, just edit the existing ones changing the text after the "=" in each line.

impy 03-09-2007 03:53 PM

got this working now with videos (cheers for the help)

problem now is the game crashes at level four

If i remember right i read somewhere theres a patch to fix this

does anyone know where to get said patch or know how to fix it otherwise?

Japo 03-09-2007 06:06 PM

The game crashes sometimes but if you load an older game likely the bug won't repeat. I've played through the 1.01 version of the game so it's possible. There's a patch with bugfixes that upgrades to v1.21 but if you install it now I think that you'll have to start all over again because reportedly the games saved with the unpatched version can't be loaded with the patched one. There's also another patch for the sound. In case you want the patches you can google for them although you'll get some broken links --but I myself found them eventually. If you don't find them in the Web and still want them let me know because I've got them but I can't attach them here because the v1.21 one is larger than the attachments allowed by this forum.

Crusader 2 is downloadable from Abandonia.
Crusader 1 has been published by Electronic Arts and is therefore under ESA protection until 2011 *

* There are sources that claim it was Origin who published Crusader 1. If that can be confirmed, we could put it up for download some time soon.

Didn't EA buy Origin? If so, wouldn't that mean it doesn't really matter if it was Origin or EA that published it?

The Fifth Horseman 10-01-2008 02:48 PM

It does make a difference, since we have 15 year protection on core ESA members vs 10 year protection on their subsidiaries.

Mighty Midget 10-01-2008 02:55 PM

But isn't Origin as extinct as a diplodocus, and doesn't that change the core member/subsidiary thing? I mean, if Origin was alive and kicking, then it would be all clear, but with Origin dead, I thought any of their games are to be treated as EA property on the same level as any of EA's own games.

The Fifth Horseman 10-01-2008 03:22 PM

Defunct/disbanded status does not change anything.

Mighty Midget 10-01-2008 03:31 PM

Ok, thanks for clarifying that :)

Luchsen 10-01-2008 08:45 PM

Only the initial US release was also published by ORIGIN itself, I think.

[edit] Yeah, old game magazines say that it was published by ORIGIN, and the install guide referred to the ORIGIN Publishing Section and the ORIGIN Marketing Department. [/edit]

Are you running it in DOSBox? If not, then try that. It should work well in DOSBox if your pc is up for the task (you'd need more than 1 gHz and 256 mb ram which I suppose is no problem for most people today)

grievous 03-02-2008 08:32 PM

yes i am running the game with dosbox and my computer is fast enough but like i said characters on a black screen

_r.u.s.s. 04-02-2008 11:01 AM

well what comes to my mind is that you managed to get wrong ripped version or something. mine is for example 64 504 985 bytes in size. is your smaller?

also don't forget to use latest dosbox 0.72 (that one works for me and i have tried every core settings) and set proper sound card in install.exe, misconfigured sound can freeze a game as well

grievous 05-02-2008 12:55 AM

i have the original game cd, and i have dosbox 0.72 but how do i know if the sound is set up properly?

You can run the install program even after the initial installation to reconfigure the sound. (see page 4 of install guide). Run it from within DOSBox. It will allow you to test your settings from the config program. Make sure you select the same config that DOSBox is set to (typically standard Soundblaster settings IRQ=7 DMA=1 Base=220 ).

grievous 05-02-2008 04:32 AM

i tried that and now i get halted file cache\cache line 192 or something like that so now what?

_r.u.s.s. 05-02-2008 08:37 AM

what does happen when you set no sound in setup?

grievous 05-02-2008 09:43 PM

i dont think its a sound problem ive had a lot of trouble with the static\shapes file, it doesnt lock up on me i just cant see any backgroud

grievous 05-02-2008 09:51 PM

it also says halted file\flex

Geezer 06-02-2008 12:53 AM

What video adapter card do you use? I know that DOSBox had a problem with VESA drivers in the earlier releases but I think that issue is solved in 7.1 and after. Just make sure your video card supports the VBE (VESA BIOS extensions) standards. This game requires it. As a long shot try running the UNIVBE program from the game directory before you start the game.

Also when you run the install program it lets you set the screen resolution you want to use. What did you select?

EDIT: Actually the more I check into it it looks like running the UNIVBE program may take care of your problem. It will load a VESA driver for you.

grievous 06-02-2008 02:24 AM

i ran the univbe program and it didnt change anything. i can get though all the intro videos but when the game should start it just exits back to dosbox says something about halted cache\cache or flex read error static\shapes.

Geezer 06-02-2008 04:35 AM

Well I'm stumped then. If your sure you have a good installation then I don't know what the problem could be. Did you run install from DOSBox or Windows?

The Fifth Horseman 06-02-2008 05:53 PM

Try an older version of DOSBox.

If the same problems appear, it's possible your CD is damaged, or your optical drive is at the end of its lifespan.

Try and create an ISO image of the disc, using the lowest read-speed your drive offers. Then use IMGMOUNT command to mount that ISO as a drive in DOSBox and re-install the game from it.

grievous 06-02-2008 10:17 PM

i was starting to think my cd could be damaged because when i install the game it has alot of trouble getting past the shapes file and if thats the case where can i download the game? im no computer wiz so i dont know what an ISO image is or how to create one.

grievous 06-02-2008 10:42 PM

well i think i figured out the ISO image thing and it says it cant copy the shapes file because of cyclic redundancy or something would it be possible for someone to e-mail the shapes file to me and would that work?

The Fifth Horseman 07-02-2008 07:29 AM

Might do, might do not. It seems that I was right and the CD is broken - more files may have been damaged than just that one.

grievous 07-02-2008 09:55 PM

it was just the shapes file. i found a place to download it. i replaced my shapes file with the one i downloaded and it works now.

thanks for all your help guys.

Please help me and tell me what this indicates.I have managed to install this game previously with the help of a computer expert. However he now says that the game is too old to be run in my current system. It is Microsoft XP Service Pack 2. I also bought this game a long time ago when it was first brought out.
Does this mean it is too old and I will have to buy a new CD of this game so that it will be compatible to today's new systems?

Without checking the details, the game is not compatibile with Windows.

Not exactly. You can get it to work by using DOSBox to emulate a DOS enviroment.
We've got a DOSBox tutorial stickied in the Troubleshooting forum, and that would be the best place for you to start.

Sry, maybe I just didn´t get it, but where do I start the download? There´re is no download-button at the position where it is with the other games, i.e. Crusader:NoRegret...maybe it´s a stupid question, but I am really helpless!

btw, nice page, just loving it more and more every day, thx 4 it!

dosraider 10-06-2008 09:29 PM

There is no download button because you can't download it.
The game is -(still)- protected.
So: no download for this one.

Can change in the future.
Please don't ask when .....none knows.

Efares 11-06-2008 03:17 PM

Ah ok, thx...already had doubts of myself ;)
but anyway: awesome game, loved to play it! But now my cd is hold in one piece by the label
but way do they protect NoRemorse, but release NoRegret?

Black screen in game in crusader no remorse

Yo people, maybe someone could help me, I installed the game from d-fend on XP but when i start a new game, the intro go fine the menu loads fine too but when i enter in the game i have a whole black screen with a repeating message "nullShape t189 f0!" and "nullShape t889 f0!" ... <?> The stranger thing is that i played 2 years ago this game on the same computer and everything was ok, the only difference was that I installed the game from dos in win 98 and made it run on d-fend on win XP. I tryed every option in D-fend, reinstall a lot of times, copied from the origanal cd missing folders if any was missing, and i'm out of ideas how to fix this.

P.S. the game is in a original CD bought on a shop 12 years ago and the Cd is not damaged. Like i said I'm out of ideas, Who can help ?

Don't know if D-Fend is the cullprit, but I have also the original CD and it installs/run fine DIRECTLY in dosbox 0.72.

So my advise: delete your crusader folder and do an install/run directly in dosbox.

If you still have problems:
Post ALL your mount lines and how you configured soundsettings.
BTW, the game runs better if you create an ISO from your CD and use imgmount in dosbox.

The Fifth Horseman 31-08-2008 10:20 AM

Try running it in DOSBox, without the frontend.

wilk7486 03-09-2008 08:40 AM

Ok look's like everything goes fine now. I reinstalled the game directly from the cd also installed a WMV9_VCM codec whitch i forgot to install after my last format 3 moths ago, it has installed it self from an cd with a program. now all graphics displays it self like they should.
Btw. do you know maybe how to convert the films and sound extentions from the game cd to wmv mpeg or avi and sounds from amf to waw or mp3 ?
One thing is sure, the old games had a great musics in game.

The Fifth Horseman 03-09-2008 09:13 AM

You can find the music from both Crusader games at www.mirsoft.info. It's in MOD format, so you'll need a MOD player to listen to it (WinAmp does it quite well)

The only problem is that i tryed to open theese files from "SOUND" and "FLics" folders copied to my HDD (from both Crusders) in winamp 5.51, WM player 11, Subedit player and allplayer. The only what theese progmas says me that it's an unsuported file extension or just crashing it self trying to open <?> any other suggestions or ideas ?

The Fifth Horseman 03-09-2008 11:20 AM

Yeah, you should first try to process them through a ripper utility. ^_^

Or just download the tracks from Mirsoft:

proplem video crashes at the rebel base (no remorse)

Hi,
I just dug my old gamecd and then found this website and downloaded dosbox. I think it is very cool that I can now play some of my old fav dos games.
anyways, my crusader runs fantastic until I get to the rebel base... whenever I talk to any of the characters in the bar, the game freezes during their particular video. I can't seem to get around this without missing vital parts of the story. Is there a way to fix this bug? Anybody else experiencing this?

Thanks,

Bon
[Edited]

Japo 20-01-2009 01:42 AM

So you're running it from your original CD? Chances are that you haven't mounted your CD unit in DOSBox, check the tutorials as how to do it.

If that's not it (but it probably is...), run the configuration program, or open the crusader.cfg file with a plain text editor (like Windows notepad), and check that the path to the clips is correct, _specially_ if your CD is not in the D: unit. (I'm talking from memory here.)

bonfire79 20-01-2009 06:25 PM

video problems

I fixed it today, turns out the CD had some blemishes on it, so I cleaned them up and the videos ran just fine... off to kick some more a**!!!

THanks,

Bon

run in DOS?

Has anybody had success in running this in pure DOS? My 700mhz machine isn't fast enough for DOSBOX to run this without too many frameskips and too few cycles. That wouldn't be so bad if my XP machine's HD hadn't bit the big one.

Unfortunately my machine doesn't seem to like crusader; even a boot to "safe mode command prompt" gets a general protection fault when I try to run the game.

Any ideas?

You hardly can say 'safe mode command prompt' is 'pure dos'.*sigh*

FYI: Crusader runs fine in MsDos6.22.
You could try a 6.22 bootdisk .... if you have a FAT16 partition.
Or a FreeDos bootdisk .....if you have a FAT32 partition.
If you will be able to get sound is another matter.

.... Or even more simply: give it a go in XP/VDMSound, the Crusader games work fine in combination XP/VDMSound.

DarkStar88 08-05-2009 03:01 AM

Well thanks for the advice dosraider. Unfortunately, like I said my XP machine is dead at the moment, and will be until I can raise ~$90 for a decent SATA drive. I got it to work just dandy with dosbox on that machine, with sound and the hq3x filter to boot.

My soundcard is a SB Live! Value...there was one site I found with dos drivers, but the setup EXE refused to run.

swaaye 03-08-2009 04:16 AM

I really doubt that the Crusader games will run in a XP DOS box. The games use a DOS extender that really dislikes Windows of any type. You can't even run it in a DOS box in Windows 9x.

DOSBOX runs them ok (very demanding though) otherwise you have to use pure DOS.

SBLive does have a DOS driver as you say and it ought to work with the game.

kristustf 03-08-2009 10:51 AM

Found torrents of the games as ISOs on the pirate bay after a google search. At least No regret was still live and kicking.

[EDITED]

wilk7486 21-08-2010 11:37 AM

HI, I was looking around in the web, searching for a forum with an explanation, how to make run crusader no remorse and solve the issue with error:
"Unable to open file (null), in file FILE/FASTFLEX.C, line 38"

There was a lot questions about that in many different forums but no reliable answer in one place for that.
Finally I managed to remember the solution and solve the problem.
After the instalation of the game (Crusader no remorse v 1.01) from the original cd, we must find the install location and copy everything from the original cd to the install location in the hdd folder. everything but not the exe files.
The fastflex issue, appear too if we forgot to mount the game as well as the cd. (can be copied into a hdd location, and mounted from there as a CDROM)
This is the most important, this game or at least the original game, canot be played without a cd or a mounted folder with the copied cd files inside.

I like to return sometimes to this game and this is not the first time when i forget how to and why, so a little reminder for myself and maybe someone else, how to install and mount all this stuff using dosbox + d-fend.

We install dosbox first, then d-fend. doble click in d-fend icon, add with editor and step by step, we configure.

for the instalation we put in GAME EXE, the path from the cd or from the hdd folder of the crusader.exe ass well as for the setup
game need loadfix 64 kb and the capture folder can be anywhere.

In mounting options, click add,
mount type: drive
select drive: C:\CRUSADER (The folder must exist, so we create it "by hand" and is empty, for now.)
mounted drive letter: C

the same again, add,
mount type: CDROM
select drive: D:\CrusaderNoRemorse (the location where I copied everything from the original cd )
mounted drive letter: F (F is my CDROM drive)

Ok, Ok, and run setup. The system has installed the game in: C:\CRUSADER
After the instalation we change the path of the game exe to the installation root and should work.
If dosent work, use the method gived here:http://cyberionsystems.com/echosecto....php?topic=6.0

the game need to work and install, enabled XMS, EMS and video card vga. The rest depend on what machine we use (at least i think).

The black screen issue is something strange, i have solved this by installing the game by dosbox without d-fend, using it only to configure options like full screen and cpu stuff.
I think, it apear when we forget to mount the cd as well as the game.

I had some problems with, how to patch the game using dosbox, and google has not gived me the answer, so some instructions if i will forget it again.
To patch the game with dosbox:

open dosbox (NO D-FEND !)
type:
mount c c:\crusader (directory of the installation)
mount d d:\crusadernoremorse (the directory where i copied the cd and used it instead of the game cd, for obvious reasons) (don't use space in the name of the folder, won't work in dos.)
c:
crupatch c:crusader\crusader.exe (i think this hasnt work)
crupatch c:\

the game was patched. Of course the patch must be extracted and copied in c:\crusader folder as well as in d:\crusadernoremorse folder. (Maybe just in the first one)

In Priority i use options: first higher, second normal
In Environment i use:
63 MB - amount of dos memory
enabled XMS and EMS
cycles 15000, up 500, down 20, with enabled option sync
CPU Core: dynamic
frame skip: 0
display: vga

In General:
fullscreen
doublebuffering
fullfixed
aspect correction
Render method: ddraw
Resoluion: default
scale: none
scaling: 1.00

Hope this will help someone or myself in the future.

Aààààààànd that's the screw up.

Do NOT mount the folder directly.

Rule of mounting correctly:
First create a folder to use as virtual C (let say: C:\oldgames)
Mount that as virtual C:\
mount c c:\oldgames
Mount the CD as CDdrive D(or imgmount an image as D)
Install the game in dosbox in let say c:\crusader, that's your dosbox path, in windows it will look as: c:\oldgames\crusader.

Now to run crusader and avoid screw ups:
Mount \oldgames\ as virtual C
mount c c:\oldgames\
c:

Mount the CD as CDdrive D (or imgmount an image as D)
do a
cd crusader
Your prompt will change to c:\>crusader
now launch the game, the game will find the needed files.
No need to do all kinds of strange manips wilk7486, no need at all.

ALWAYS use a folder as virtual C in dosbox and work further from there .... if the game engine looks for files in a specific path/subdir you will avoid the 'Unable to open whatever file'.
Many dosgames will not run directly from the C prompt but need to be launched from their own directory.
Always use the same mounts, don't alter the mounts after you installed the game.

Specific for crusader run the game from "c:\>crusader" prompt, NOT FROM C:\>

For those on Vista or Win7: use your "personal user" folders or another partition then C to create an \oldgames\ folder, will avoid read/write restricions.

Read the tutos about the dosbox .

missing video

well i haven't seen anybody talking about it here - the download here on Abandonia kinda lacks the videos, right? i can run the game properly, everything works, except for the videos. in the FLICKS directory there are just the subtitles (it has like 65kb). am i missing something, or is the game missing videos?

Most likely they were removed to reduce the size of the archive.

Yes, it's ripped.

If we find the full CD we can add an external download link to the ISO Cellar, but we can't host such a big archive ourselves.

Guest CA 14-05-2011 12:05 PM

Loved it

Great Game
Loved to play it 'til the end. Great memories it brings. Had a bug late in the game that when played in a certain order it freezes the game. Crusader No regret was also good. A few weeks ago I was cleaning my memories corner e found those two. I installed them again but the pc was with some glitches that didn't let me played them. :S But at least "Lucas Arts - The Dig" did. :)

We have No Remorse at the ISO Cellar. No Regret is protected and cannot be offered for download.

allthumbs 14-05-2011 06:41 PM

Is there a way to use the main download rip for this game here on Abandonia and somehow add the missing video files without getting the isos for the whole game from the ISO cellar? Thanks

edit - actually, how many cutscenes are there besides the opening cinematic - maybe it's not worth the trouble?

AFAIK, there isn't.

allthumbs 14-05-2011 08:29 PM

Do I recall right that the cutscenes are in some format that isn't very Win 7 friendly anyway?

Also, is there an inventory screen that tells me about the weapon I have equipped?

allthumbs 15-05-2011 01:50 AM

I have downloaded all the files from the ISO cellar, and mounted them to a disc. I managed to get the game to run, but there are no cutscenes and there is no sound. I see the avi files are in the FLIC folder. I ran the install and set the port to 240, the IRQ to 5, and the DMA at 3. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Edit - here is the error I get
It's a flashing orange screen that says this:

Using map patch file
Fatal error 286.3330
General protection fault detected

Do I need to convert the AVI files or something?

Then I get a command line

Code:

mount d d:\ -t cdrom -label CRUSADER
As for the sound you can first try in-game accessing the options from the game menu. If that doesn't work, edit CRUSADER.CFG and make sure there are lines reading like this (for DOSBox's default sound card settings and if the CD is mounted in DOSBox as the D: drive):

Code:

sound=on
music=on
port=0x220
irq=7
dma=1
soundcard=3
...
cdletter=d
flicpath=\flics

Don't add these lines, just edit the existing ones changing the text after the "=" in each line.

This did it! Thank you!

Me again. Sorry. The game plays wonderfully. I have a question about the item inventory, though. There is an object that is in my inventory that is silver and has a green and red button in the front, and smaller blue, green and red buttons across the top. When I press the U key to use it, it skips ahead to the energy cube and beeps, then immediately goes back to the original mystery item. What is it? Thanks

Hello,I think what you are talking about is a blast pac.
Unlike other items, this can be used only near the target. For example in no remorse, In the first level you get it.It can be used only near the thermal coupler which you have to destroy.

You will also get another item known as the Fusion pac in the Nerve gas mission of No Remorse. :-)
