Haha.... ALOT of old memories here... *L

Remember... be SAFE.. use rubber!

xndr2181 05-08-2004 10:45 PM

Larry looks better then ever.

Wow, I beat this game in like a solid 2 hour block. What a great game! I wish they remade 2 and 3... Maybe someday. Although this was a short game, it was a blast, I love the part with the condoms and/or the scene that takes place if you enter the taxi with the cheap win, :P .

Tom Henrik 06-08-2004 05:15 AM

Yeah. The taxi scene...

Hmmm.... Maybe I should add the Easter Eggs for all the Larry games.

That'd be great, Larry 1 is one of those games I can play multiple times, so if you post the easter eggs, that'd at least give me a reason to replay it, :D

questions from the manual

hello,

since "stumbling" across this site 3 months ago, i have been addicted to it and checking in at least once a day!

but...how do you find the answers for the ones where they ask from the manual (i.e. palomino ranch, larry's occupation, etc)? i looked in the CGA LSL1 and the manual there doesn't seem to be much help.

many thanks

Which game and version are you talking about? Cause I played the VGA version and it ran fine, with no need for any handbook stuff...Let me know and I'll see if I can help you out!

I am playing the version that is downloaded from the site. After I answer the usual age-verification questioning, it then asks a question from the documentation. Right now, I'm looking at this question:

How does the Vice President of "Whose Whom's" Direct Male Department sign his name?

a. Sincerely
b. Enthusiactically
c. Hungrily
d. Admiringly

I started the game under DosBox and ran "sierra.exe"

Thanks

I was at the local video game store today and I saw a poster for a Larry game: Larry: Magna Cum Lade. There was no mistaking it, this is the same larry. So i decided i needed to play the originals before i could go on to a new one. Here's my problem: the only files that i get on download is a "leisure suit larry 1.rar" this is different from other games i have gotten from this site and i was wondering what i needed to do to make this game work?

Tom Henrik 29-08-2004 08:37 PM

That is very strange.

leisure suit larry 1.rar ???

It should be:
Larry 1 - In the Land of the Lounge Lizards VGA.zip

or

Larry 1 - In the Land of the Lounge Lizards.zip

Try to change the ending of the file to .zip

Data 29-08-2004 08:37 PM

odd try winrar to extract it

i think it's at http://www.rarlab.com

Tom Henrik 29-08-2004 08:39 PM

Nice avatar, Data :D

jbergstrom 31-08-2004 12:06 PM

The CTRL+ALT+X combo only helps for those age verification questions. In addition there is a copy protection sequence that asks for texts in the manual. These aren't skipped by the key combination.

You have any examples?

jbergstrom 31-08-2004 01:25 PM

First there comes a text box that says "And now, a question that won't tax your memory. This question refers to the documentation that came with your game."

Then a 4-option question comes up. Some examples:

In the small photo next to word "spread" in the "Palamino Ranch" brochure, a cowboy seems to be hugging a. a rodeo clown, b. another cowboy, c. a cowgirl, d. a cow

The address on the back of the "Who's Whom" letter is a. smeared, b. invisible, c. scrawled on by a child, d. also Al Lowe's home address

According to "Who's Whom", Larry prefers ladies' derrieres as a. firm, b. rounded, c. petite, d. yes

CTLR+ALT+X just changes the question.

Tom Henrik 31-08-2004 02:18 PM

Thanks for the heads up!

I'll get moving in cracking those

Tom Henrik 31-08-2004 09:25 PM

There the copy-protection is up.

There was only 1 question I didn't fully solve, so I listed the two options that remains. If anyone find out the answer please inform me so I can update the file :sneaky:

The question in question :P

Q: According to "Whose Whom," how well-endowed does Larry prefer his women?

A: Petite blossoms or Medium handfuls

Well, most adventure gamers arn't expecting much from that game. It won't be a point and click like the older larry games. Heh it's not even latty, but his cousin, Larray Loveboat or something like that.

But anyways, in regard to a previous post. There are some guys over at AGS remaking LSL 2 and 3. I'm not sure if the graphics have changed, but they have a point and click interface. I think no3 has been finished, but no2 isnt.

edit:
So Larry is finished in AGS. Check out this thread: http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=12020.0

Larry 3 is not finished yet, but the thread is here: http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=8861.0

I need money for the girl in the bar and all those expensive cab rides, so I go to the casino to try and win some money but instead I lose all my money and then I'm stuck and have to restart the game. Does anyone know a trick to beat the casino cause I'm on the verge of insanity!

Kon-Tiki 28-10-2004 10:14 PM

Save before playing and restore when losing.

It's so simple when you're not blinded by frustration!

Guest 22-12-2004 08:21 PM

How do I play this game? :S

I downloaded dosbox If I need it but I don't understand it good.

When I start the exe for the game I only get the dos lines, no picture.

Sebatianos 22-12-2004 08:26 PM

DosBox has no pictures!
It's an emulation of the MS-Dos. That's the thing we used before clicking on everything in windows!

So you must TYPE things in it!
You must also read things in it!
SO:
type mount c *drive*:\
For *drive* type the letter of the disk you have your old games on!

Now there are some basic Dos commands you need to know!

X: - takes you to the drive you mounted (put the right letter in instead of X)!
CD - type this and the name of the folder to go to that certain folder!
CD.. - go back one folder!
DIR - look what's in the folder!
DIR.BAT (or .EXE or .COM) - lets you see all the programes you can run!
NAME - type the name of the program you wish to run!

Zxby 13-01-2005 09:43 PM

Im not sure who looks better - the hooker in the VGA version or the hooker in the original version? {places my empty shot glass down next to the burbon}.

Sjakie 18-01-2005 09:12 PM

any ideas....
thanks

If it doesn't work with Nagi, you'll have to do some tweakings in the .ini file. That tweaking should already be done in Enclosure. You can simply download Enclosure, put Leisure Suit Larry 1 (original version) in a folder in Enclosure, then start Enclosure. You'll be prompted which game to play. I bet you'll be able to figure it out from there on :D

I need help :help: I have downloaded LSL VGA and Dosbox and nothing works . I don't know how to run the game through dosbox. I need some step by step instructions. Somebody please help me.

Guest 27-01-2005 03:43 AM

First, install dosbox into a folder called c:\dosbox.

Next, create a directory in c:\ and call it something that is 8 letters or less. I call it c:\oldgames. Then, make sure that every game you install gets installed to c:\oldgames. For instance, Space Quest 4 would go in c:\oldgames\sq4. Remember to name all directories within c:\oldgames at 8 letters or less!

Now, from within Windows, go to the Command Prompt. When the black window pops up, type C:\DOSBOX\DOSBOX -FULLSCREEN. This command basically just tells the computer to load up an executable file called dosbox from within the directory c:\dosbox, and the "-fullscreen" means load it in fullscreen mode.

The screen will flash a bit, and you will eventually see a "z prompt" (Z:\). Type MOUNT C C:\OLDGAMES. This mounts your c:\oldgames directory as your "root directory" within dosbox.

Type C:\. This changes your z prompt to a c prompt.

Now change to whatever directory your chosen game is in. Remember, we loaded c:\oldgames as just plain ol' c:\. This means that you don't have to mention the word oldgames anymore. You would just type CD SQ4 (Change Directory to SQ4), or CD Larry1, or whatever the directory name is for the corresponding game.

Your prompt should now say the name of the directory you are in, like C:\SQ4, for instance. If you haven't installed the game yet, you would type in INSTALL at this point, and follow the instructions. But if you don't know the name of the installation file (always INSTALL for Sierra games) you could type DIR/W to see a list of files and search for one.

If you've already installed the game, and you're back to your C:\SQ4 (or whatever) prompt, you would then type the name of the executable file that starts the game. It's different for every game, though many Sierra games start with a file called SIERRA or SCIDHUV. Just DIR/W again if you have to search around. Try to consult a readme file or documentation of some kind first, if you're unsure of what file to use, because many old games required the use of a pre-scripted batch file (.bat) to work properly.

I was bored so I made this reply very lengthy, but hopefully it's simple enough to make sense of.

Also, keep in mind that many of the older games were designed for the original Soundblaster and Adlib cards from yesteryear, so your computer might lock up if you aren't prepared for this. I use an emulator called VDMS, but if you don't have anything like it you might want to make sure your games are setup without Soundblaster options turned on.

Enjoy!

-Some random guy.

Anyone know how to get the 'good' sound working in the VGA version of LSL1?

My game runs fine, but no matter what I choose in the install for sound - I get an error at the end of installation and the game switches back to default PC speaker sounds and music. Any suggestions?

I had this same problem, but found the solution. The unzipped/unRARed files are read-only. Disable read-only on RESOURCE.CFG and then run Install to change the sound settings.

Now, does anyone else have a problem where when you give the whiskey to the drunk by the bathroom, the game just doesn't do anything? It plays the glug-glug-glug sound and animation, and then just stops. The game is still responsive (I can restore a game and quit), but I get the watch cursor and the "Glug glug glug" dialog box doesn't go away and nothing happens.

I think you want the technical forum for that, since it doesn't have much to do with Larry, really.

Paperbrain 04-12-2005 03:24 AM

Al Lowe, the creator of Larry included the copy protection for all the Larry games on his site; allowe.com. If you have problems running any of the Larry games in XP, use Dfend with DosBox. Besides being easier to work with than DosBox alone, Dfend adds full soundcard and joystick support.
Anyhoo, all of Al Lowes games are worth the effort. :D

I noticed this, and I couldn't find any information on it being sold or the company being part of the ESA.
I could not find this game sold anywhere and there's no mention of it on Activision's site, and since Activision Blizzard was what Sierra was merged into... With them DROPPING the Leisure Suit Larry series... There is no protection I can find.
The latest LSL game was made by Codemasters, but their site contains no info on any of the old games.
This leads me to believe that the old games are in limbo and either completely unlicensed or possibly licensed by Activision Blizzard but no longer available.
Activision used to be part of the ESA, but left in 2008.
Am I mistaken?

Luchsen 17-04-2009 09:36 PM

It is sold within the Leisure Suit Larry Collection from 2006.

To be honest, a great deal of games only get manufactured a few times but in great quantities. A game that would have a limited market would probably only be printed once. So the moment they're printed, they become "discontinued" even if stores are just starting to sell them.

But since several big stores still have the LSL collection up for sale ...
