Really?! That's very wierd, since the game can be run both in dos and in windows

Sean 28-03-2005 03:31 PM

I will try that again when i have more time but im sure i got an error =-/

DeathDude 28-03-2005 03:48 PM

Where'd you grab the demo for fallout anyway? Just wondering, since I've been meaning to try it as well.

Jim6 28-03-2005 04:43 PM

Well, as it happens, I was cleaning out my room ovr the weekend, and came across a cd with it on it. I remembered that magic was looking for it so... Tada!

Edit: Just get the whole directory.

Oh, and it works fine in Windows 95 compatability mode.

Yobor 28-03-2005 04:58 PM

Well, Fallout itself works perfectly well on WinXP

Jim6 28-03-2005 05:01 PM

True, that.

Oh, and if you do buy Fallout 2 - Install the patch before you start playing! It invalidates your saves... :(

Edit: I believe that there may have been a DOS varsion of Fallout 1, but the demo is definitely Windows only.

Yobor 28-03-2005 05:19 PM

Patch...?
I had no idea there was a Fallout 2 patch. It worked just fine.......

Jim6 28-03-2005 05:25 PM

:w00t: There's *tons* of bugs in the initial release! You may have a later version. There's little that'll crash it, but there's a load of problems with some quests (especially the more complex ones, like in New Reno)

Regardless, the game is well-playable without it, but it's better with imo!

One more thing: This demo is a fairly bad representation of Fallout - the actual game has a slightly easier to use interface, and has a good bit more roleplaying; the demo just winds down into a big fight. That's not to say I didn't play it a load of times to see every possible outcome! (Usually me taking everyone on with the minigun :D)

Yobor 28-03-2005 05:28 PM

Wow. I never noticed. I DO have the original released. I know some of the bugs in Reno, but overall the game works excellently.

I never played the Demo, I just got the game. Impulse buy worked out quite well

DeathDude 28-03-2005 05:30 PM

Bummer about the demo though if it's not a true representation, but I'll download it later and try it out.

Havell 28-03-2005 05:33 PM

There were loads of bugs beofre the patch, inclding quest problems and the car was one of the most bug-ridden things in any game ever, park it in the wrong place or run out of fuel and walk off and bye bye, no more car.

Yobor 28-03-2005 05:39 PM

Oh THOSE were the bugs. Well, I never could be bothered to get the car, and those quests that were buggy I just killed everyone involved :-)

I do knwo the quest that is ultra buggy is the one for the Cultists to kill the Emperor. The force field never turned off :-(

Havell 28-03-2005 05:45 PM

The car is one of the most fun things in the game! I just imagined myself as a gangster cruising around the wasteland B)

isn't that exactly the same problem the original poster had?

EDIT: never mind, you are him

Jim6 28-03-2005 11:59 PM

It's also the problem I solved oh... 4 posts ago?

Eyes -> Screen -> Solution -> Fallout
It's that easy!* :D

Deathdude: It sort-of showcases the engine, and gives a vague idea as to what playing the game is like; you just have to pretend that there's a story and that you have quests

* Just in case I wasn't clear enough; right-click the Fallout.exe, go to Properties, Compatability Modes, "Run this program with compatabilit for: Windows 95". Sorted! :max:

DeathDude 29-03-2005 12:33 AM

No worries, I was planning on trying it out, even if the demo wasn't up to standard, just to see what it's sort of like, and if I ever want to think about purchasing the series.

Jim6 29-03-2005 01:26 AM

You do. :D

I personally own 2 copies of F2, and 3 of F1. Don't ask why.

a1s 29-03-2005 01:28 AM

I won't ask if you send me one

JJXB 29-03-2005 02:48 AM

the demo seriously pales compared to the full game. im not an rpg fan but it got me hooked and kept me hooked and its a really good game. its one of the few old games i would pay ?15 for now. i got mine in a ?20 3-pack which had 1, 2 and tactics in it.
and as for patch advice with fallout 2, go to nma-fallout.com and download the unofficial 1.05 patch (one of the best patches you can get for it). the 1.05 patch fixes issues the 1.02 patch doesn't and it was made by fallout fans so you know that its had extensive testing :)

I think we can all safely say that yobor is an italian mobster in real life :)

Joke aside, i got fallout, and it's not only for DOS, like somebody said, it's also for windows. So it can be installed both on DOS, and on Windows, that's why i said it's wierd that the demo should be only for win... i must have some early version...

JJXB 29-03-2005 03:58 PM

as far as i know, i had a dos demo
