Sebatianos 08-03-2005 08:33 AM

Today is the international day of women.
I don't know, how many people even know that (I know in some countries people are not even aware this exists), but I wish to take this opurtunity to show my respect to all the girls/women that are members of our site (and all girls/women in general).

:kosta:

Kizzikat 08-03-2005 08:35 AM

Is it inappropriate to say I love you?

Kizzikat 08-03-2005 08:35 AM

I guess it is, considering I don't know anything about you, nevertheless, I'll say it anyway. Men rock, even if it is Women's Day.

wendymaree 08-03-2005 09:22 AM

What a nice gesture, Sebatianos. And it's appreciated :bye:

Data 08-03-2005 09:23 AM

*pinned for today* Not that women shouldn't be appriciated on other days as well.

Sebatianos 08-03-2005 09:48 AM

I agree - respect everybody ALWAYS (thanks for pinning this one).

Reup 08-03-2005 10:08 AM

Happy International Womens Day, Women! :)

And if your significant other forgets about this glorious day (or you're single), go and treat yourself to a nice big chocalate chip brownie! :ok:

Or something a bit less fattening - we don't want you all getting all podgy on us, ruining the fine booty!

Aww thanks Sebatianos and all other fellows.

I've got to admit this is the first time I've heard of the day but it's definately a sweet gesture that falls in the case of Valentine's Day (as in a wonderful thought but it really should be practiced on all other days as well).

Puffin 08-03-2005 01:58 PM

thanks

FlightorFight 08-03-2005 02:02 PM

:D
Thanks!

ReamusLQ 08-03-2005 02:29 PM

Yay for women, because I love them so much!

Also, a totally honest question (although a bit sick...) What do the Taliban and muslims that force women to wear Burka's or be shot do on this day?

taikara 08-03-2005 02:34 PM

I have never heard of that! Thanks, Seb, for bringing it up! :ok:

It's good to be appreciated :D

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside  <---loves that smiley, and enjoys an opportunity to use it without consequence ;)

MDZ - Mednarodni dan žena? At least we say that in Slovene :D
Thanx honey for lunch and flowers :ok:

I don't know for other countries, but here in Slovenia we don't want men to feel like they don't have their own holiday aswell, so we celebrate the 10th of March

All I can write is RESPECT

Yamcha 08-03-2005 04:29 PM

Well that's not true. It's just that in the ex-communist countries they made a really big deal out of this (because they canceled Mother's day - that's why this day replaced mother's day - what Yamcha said). But it is an international women's day (even Google changed it's sign - the second O was changed in the symbol for female.
But it's true, that mostly the native english speaking countries don't really know much about this day, although in commemorates the events that happened in the US (when women were trying to achieve labour equality and some of them got killed by the military).

Woman's day is very big here (although I didn't get to enjoy it). Actually the date that is used now is thanks to Russia mostly. During The Great War (1917), women factory workers went on strike against the government on the last Sunday of February (on the Julian calendar, changing to the Gregorian calendar it becomes March 8). This was the start of rioting all over, and days later the Tsar abdicated and a provisional government granted women voting rights.

Is the thing in the US you are talking about the factory fires in New York? That was in 1910 I think, and I think almost 200 women (girls mostly) died in them. I don't remember women being shot by the US military while protesting for labor equality rights.

Anyways, in my region, Women's day is very much a celebration of mothers, but also women soldiers (Since soldier's day is just a little bit earlier) and also something like Valentine's day (Giving flowers and gifts). A lot of Western countries don't celebrate Women's day very much. Too bad I guess.

For all the women:

Sorry, you're right. I'm just doing so many things at once... I actually confused the reason why the 1st of May was remembered with the reason for the 8th of March being remebered. It was the fire yes. So in that memory women were preparing strikes on the 8th of March.

Thank you for correcting me :ok:

einherjar 08-03-2005 11:43 PM

Every day is women's day in America.

Iron_Scarecrow 09-03-2005 02:20 AM

YAY :Brain: for women.

One of my female freinds did a talk at some womens conference for this day and got a free breakfast, I wish I got a free breakfast I'm lucky to have any breakfast.

I do modern history at school and we did the suffragettes in britain and its disgusting the way women were treated, I'm glad it isnt like that any more. :Brain:

Maerlyn 09-03-2005 10:22 PM

How can we celebrate women just for being women?

I understand mother's day and father's day, but why do we celebrate other human beings who want to be treated equal ( which is within everyone's right ), just because they have a vagina and a pair of tits.

Just for being me, i want 'Me Day', i have done just as little and just as much as atleast 50% of any woman on this earth. Celebrate me.

punch999 09-03-2005 10:27 PM

*cough cough*huge ego *cough cough*

Tulac 09-03-2005 10:29 PM

Me senced some bad vibes...

But your question Maerlyn would be why are we celebrating anything then? To make that day different to others, to remember...

Maerlyn 09-03-2005 10:30 PM

If you do not understand the post, dont comment - to me it is clear you dont understand it at all. Go away, the adults are speaking.

EDIT: that was not to you Tulac, that was to the one above.

To remember what?

Mother's day = celebration of a woman who gave birth to a child.

Father's day = celebration of a man who insemenated a woman, thus creating life.

Woman's day = celebration of a woman because.... she is not a man?

punch999 09-03-2005 10:35 PM

i have to agree that is a bit wacko

A great example, for many people this is a great and emotional moment, for you it may not be, but people should still celebrate...

That's enough OT for me for this whole week...

Maerlyn 09-03-2005 10:38 PM

I was saying the first two are valid. Examples of worthy celebrations. Please keep up.

The third is what we are discussing. Explain to me why it is cause to celebrate.

to Maerlyn: maybe becouse of this???If you read all posts(or at least the ones of Sebastianos and Partizanka)You will get answer why we celebrate womens day...

xoopx 09-03-2005 10:42 PM

im sure im not alone when i ask;

what the hell are you kids talking about?

Tulac 09-03-2005 10:42 PM

Yes it was pretty much explained before, it's got to do with women getting independent, the communist thing, bahh who cares anyway no one is forced to celebrate it...

Partizanka 09-03-2005 10:53 PM

For someone who thinks they are so mature, you certainly have a very weak grasp of global history. It would take 10 seconds of searching to find the origins of Women's Day (Which are in fact, partially explained in this very thread).

As you are no doubt aware, equality in rights is not something that has existed universally. Almost every culture in history has had a difficult time granting women the same status as men at some point.

Now I am not some kind of radical feminist, but I think you misunderstand the nature of the holiday. It is a rememberence of the women who have struggled, suffered and died in the pursuit of justice and equality in the last century. Things many take for granted, like equal working conditions, the right to vote, and discrimination being considered a bad thing, were ideas that were almost non existant until the early 1900s.

The observation of the Holiday initially was by no means international, but perpetuated by groups that desired to fight for equality. In fact, it was rather remarkable that so many countries were having the same movements all at the same time.

I'll spare you the rest of the history lesson, but I hope you can understand it is not celebrating women just for being women. It is celebrating those women who struggled for equality in a world that said they would never be equals.

Sebatianos 10-03-2005 06:40 AM

Very well put Partizanka, but I'd just like to add, that this strugle is actaully still happening. Even in the "developed" world women aren't completely equal (there's still a lot of discrimination) and I won't even mention some undeveloped regions, where they are still stoning women to death for having intercourse and not being married.

Omuletzu 10-03-2005 01:27 PM

Congratulations. You have managed to impress me in such a way that i am forced to close this.

Nice present lads!
