I encountered a problem. I played up to the point where I purchased Space Quest IV hint book at the software store. Then I received a message (an error message, I think) saying that "993.v56 not found".

It might be a missing file. Prior to playing I already applied 3 patches I got from Sierra ftp server, so I guess the one in the archive here is incomplete.

Anybody else experiences this problem?

rabadi 05-01-2005 11:53 AM

I just did a quick search on google.com and I found this: http://www.spacequest.net/sq4/fixes/

Quote:

992.v56 not found or 993.V56 not found Fix
The disk version of SQ4 must be run using the SQ4.BAT file that comes with the game. If you don't, the game will not find certain files, like VIEW.993 (it will look for 993.v56 insted) or SCRIPT.541. If you want to run SCIDHUV, enter "SCIDHUV -N" in the DOS prompt.

Keep in mind that running the game the correct way will invalidate those saved games saved when running the game the incorrect way (which is running SCIDHUV.EXE directly without the -N option).

That is my mistake then. I have to start over the game. Oh well...

Tuttle 05-01-2005 11:54 AM

Does the second-last comment at http://www.spacequest.net/sq4/fixes/ make any sense to you?

No question, but a remark to help others who might encounter something similiar.

There seems to be a problem with the VGA320.drv supplied through SpaceQuest.net,
which supposed to make some flickering go away, or at least it proved a problem for me :) After installing it, SQ4 wouldn't start anymore and just exited with something like:

"You did something we weren't expecting you to do.... Error 4"

After reinstalling the game and ^not^ replacing the driver, everything worked like a charm. I must add, that I didn't encounter the problem which this patch is supposed to fix, so I guess to old credo "if it ain't broke etc." still stands :P

WildZeppelin 05-01-2005 10:33 PM

you guys are lucky. I haven't been able to get it to work under dosbox, abandonloader, or SoundVDMS. Anybody have a clue if you had to do something special? So far I can get SQ1, SQ1VGA, 3, 5, and 6 to run. Six crashed when I had to take care of the old hag. I might be missing another patch, but I downloaded one which fixed the endodroid runner talking and the sickbay com.

DonCorleone 21-01-2005 04:50 PM

A really great game. But the talky one is much grater... :w00t:
This humour coupled with this professional voice... itīs just great

auhsor 31-01-2005 11:57 PM

Hey, I havn't downloaded this version from the site, but I assume its the Disk version and not the CD version. If anyone was interested, the CD version has been updated by a guy here: http://forum.spacequest.net/viewtopic.php?...der=asc&start=0
:)

frellnitz 07-02-2005 08:52 AM

I put in the right protection codes, but they never work. Help.

DonCorleone 07-02-2005 02:04 PM

You mean in the time pod? Thatīs no Protection code. Just do the wild finger and type several times (I think three times will do) anything you want... :bye:

the burning machine 07-02-2005 09:23 PM

Help, the timepod spits me out after typing the wrong code for three times. A I owned this one once, I remember that I needed codes at this place before. Where can I find them?
Thanx

Chris 23-04-2005 05:29 PM

danthman1 23-04-2005 07:42 PM

i cant get it to work on dosbox. how do i get it to work on that program? please give me step-by-step instructions. :help:

A. J. Raffles 23-04-2005 08:21 PM

You followed the instructions about setting up DOSBox, right? Create a subfolder inside the Cdrive folder and call it SQ4. Unzip the game file into this folder. Start DOSBox and type "cd sq4" and "sq4" to start the game. That's it.:)

Eimear 17-10-2005 09:34 PM

how do i download it, there doesnt seem to be a button

Frodo 17-10-2005 10:12 PM

Hi Eimear

You can't download it anymore I'm afraid.

All the SQ games (and I think all Sierra games) are ESA.

MRFREAK - The Space Quest fan 19-10-2005 11:33 AM

 Does it come on this site or what................

Sebatianos 19-10-2005 11:41 AM

We hope we will be alowed to host it, but unless Sierra gives us permision - you won't be able to download it.
We had it, but had to remove it.

Sounds like you might be encountering the infamous timer problems. How are you running the game? DOSBox? Another explanation might be that you try to go to the ship too soon. You'll have to wait for those other guys to leave first.

Reup 05-12-2005 07:29 AM

Check for some patches regarding the times issues in most SQ games:

Timer Patches

Regardless of the patch, the droid appears almost once every minute, so the sequence IS pretty hard. Good luck though :ok:

DonCorleone 05-12-2005 05:52 PM

I never encountered such a problem by using dosbox

Has it something to do with the system oneīs using?

JJB 07-07-2006 03:44 AM

Anyone know if anyone has the mac version of this game? I have it but y mac ate the first disk, and I've been trying to recover it. :(

Wesserz 12-08-2006 08:17 PM

How much do you think the CD version of this game is worth now days?

Thanks, Adam

Reup 12-08-2006 09:37 PM

That kind of depends. But you should be able to get $20 for an original if it's in good shape and comes with box/manual and such.
On the other hand, they're going to release the whole series in December this year, so if you want to sell, you better do it quickly :)

Guest 13-08-2006 04:09 PM

Ok, thank you.

I have the collectors eiditon with them all, but am also getting Space Quest 4 for free of off someone, as was wondering how much i could sell for.

I picked up collectors edition of Kings Quest and Space Quest for ?7.50! bragin or what!

Grand Dad 14-08-2006 12:02 PM

The golden age of downloads is past <_<

The Timer Patch is essential after that a bit of sense and luck:bleh: .

The Fifth Horseman 16-02-2010 06:14 PM

Now sold on GOG along with parts 5 and 6. If you prefer to buy it as part of the Space Quest Collection, that is still sold at JustAdventure.

senhorlampada 23-02-2010 03:11 PM

How come it's rating is 2.9? :(
One of the best games ever!

And the first (I remember) with time travel! :P
(Back to the future doesn't count... on that series you play only in one era)

The Fifth Horseman 23-02-2010 05:17 PM

Considering that rating bases on votes given by the users, it's a pretty average score.

eugene425 23-06-2010 02:29 AM

full score

anybody ever got full points 340 out of 340?Be honest.:OK:
I had 325.

Why then did her no in your profile, if this is One of the best games ever? Therefore, users do not favor it. In my opinion for complexity.

And how many points you have gathered, Fifth, tell me please, if not a secret.:OK:

Fubb 15-07-2010 09:16 PM

It says based on the ratings of 2933 people, Eugene, right above the user rating :p and judging that its at 2.9 i'd say the average ratings are proly 3's and 2's

Also, who cares if one person says its the best game ever? Its all opinion based, its not your place to use statistics to put down what others believe :p

Eugene425 the max score in Space Quest 4 is 315, and yes I have gotten that.

Point List for the game.

This isn't entirely accurate, or at least it's not the full story. The point total originally started out at 340 and was later reduced to 315 by a patch (in SCRIPT.000). You can actually circumvent the patch by starting the game using SCIDHUV.EXE without the -N parameter that is normally used. This does cause problems later on, usually crashing the game. I think this is possible only on the disk version.

The difference in total score is related to changes in the number of points scored by certain actions. Here's the original scores and what they changed into:
  • Buying PocketPal plug 15 -> 10
  • Formatting over Vohaul 25 -> 15
  • Download Junior's mind into his body 10 -> 25
  • Push Junior into the beam 15 -> 0
  • Total 65 -> 50

Hence, a 15 point difference, leading to a reduction from 340 to 325 possible points. I got this list by comparing the SQ.net point list with the scores in The Official Guide to Roger Wilco's Space Adventures: The complete guide to Space Quests I-IV by Jill Champion and Richard C. Leinecker.

Note that the list on SQ.net is not fully accurate either. It claims the total number is 315 (which it is in the game, but the numbers add up to 325, which you can verify simply by summing that column, disregarding the -3 for wimping out at Monolith burger). Other lists indicate no points for fomatting over Vohaul (which is the same as Flushing the Brain, I think) so that's -15 making 310 points and that buying the PocketPal plug is still 15 points (my own tests confirm this), so that's +5 making the proper 315.

Quite a long post, but yes, it is possible that Eugene425 had an earlier version of the game that still had the old scoring method.

DarthHelmet86 24-07-2010 03:39 AM

That might be the case. I shall have to hunt around for my old Space Quest 4 CD and see if it is different from my current version. Though I seem to remember it being 315.

On the note of the extra points, this wouldn't be the only Space Quest game were you can get more points then the "offical" total. In the EGA version of Space Quest 1 you can Hide in the trunk, and then sneak back through the Vents to get the points from both events.

DarthHelmet86 25-07-2010 12:20 AM

Eugene I got the max score. According to Kippesoep there is a good chance your version has a higher max score, you failed to get the max score.........that means even though my score is a lower number then yours mine was actually the better score.

Example

Out of 315 I got 315 or 100% of the points

Out of 340 you got 325 or 95% of the points

Yes, most versions of the game have a maximum score of 315. There's no way to score more than that. Only old versions have a maximum score of 340.

May you give me link with your version if not warez:sneaky:?

Kippesoep 25-07-2010 07:08 PM

Sierra games are all still under protection, including Space Quest 4. It has now been released on Good Old Games though. You can get it (and Space Quest 5 and 6) on gog.com for a mere $10: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/space_quest_4_5_6

That will have the 315 max score (almost all versions do, your 340 version is much more rare).

Damn. Bargain, haggle, and now you say the game will not.:mhh:

DarthHelmet86 25-08-2010 01:10 PM

Eugene it's an adventure game it has a set amount of points. One version has more then the other, what else do you want us to say to you about this? But they are the same game, one just gives you more points for a few things then the other version does. You still only do the same stuff to get the max points.

The Bloodhawk 17-09-2011 06:45 PM

2.9? Why such low user scores for this classic?

Lulu_Jane 17-09-2011 06:48 PM

Different people have different tastes I guess. I completely agree with you that this is a classic though, and it's one of my favourites :)

Hello.

In Space Quest 4 (floppy version) in addition to the space shown in the picture below:

https://i.emezeta.com/weblog/protecc...ce-quest-4.png

Is there any other form of copy protection where do you need to re-use the game's instructions ?

Someone played the floppy version ?

Thanks.
