Fargo To Attempt Wasteland 2 with Crowd Funding:
Fargo To Attempt Wasteland 2 with Crowd Funding:
If you've been paying attention recently, Tim Schafer's Double Fine offered to make an old school adventure game if they could raise $400,000 on Kickstarter. They got that on the first day, and the total sum donated proceeded grow to about $2.5 million. Link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...fine-adventure Needless to say this is turning heads in the Game Development community. In the area of RPGs Design: Chris Avellone of Obsidian has expressed interest in seeking crowd funding for an isometric RPG. Info Link: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012...starter-fever/ And more relevant to the title of this thread, Brian Fargo (former head of Interplay) has decided to attempt the making Wasteland 2. Info Link: http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=60856 His has stated that it will be top down, party and turn based. He now has all original designers of the 1988 game (Himself, Michael A. Stackpole, Ken St. Andre, and Alan Pavlish) signed up for the project. Fallout 1 & 2 composer Mark Morgan will do the music. The project is expected to be put up on Kickstarter this month, with the goal of raising $1 Million. (This thread should probably  be moved to "Gaming Zone"...) |
Gonna copy-paste my comment from Destructoid

Maybe he should ask money from the No Mutants Allowed community. Im sure they'd love to pay Brian to develop what they'd call "A true Fallout sequel" (BLEH!). This was also posted on Destructoid by a new user Quote:

RPGs are more complicated than adventure games, so I guess that's why he's asking for more money. Or just because he thinks he will be able to get it, since DoubleFine got so much.
How much does it cost to make an RPG these days anyway? Depending on his ambitions, $1million might be too little (but didn't he say he was looking for/already had other backers?) |
I wouldn't go as far as Chosen, I could think of reasons why a good game idea would be blocked by the normal producers. If he wasn't willing to update it to a wider market base then they might see it as just a loss of money. Chosen does bring up a good point about him not actually doing anything about the license to get the original game out and about in the community, Wasteland seems popular amongst certain groups of gamers but I don't think it really is known at all...or known more then "That game that inspired Fallout".
This is being put in the wait and see basket. Also NMA idea of a good Fallout game would be to set fire to everything, troll it a bit and then rage about new games for awhile. |
They got the website plus forum up and running:
http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/ People are suggesting stuff they want to see in the game... |
Plenty of information about the Kickstarter offers too:
http://wasteland.inxile-entertainmen....php?f=8&t=114 If you're willing to put up a fair amount of cash, you can get quite a few trinkets and such. Or you could just pay $15 for a DRM-free version of the game (not sure what they mean by DRM free though, since I don't how how it's going to be distributed). It all looks rather promising at the moment, but it's likely that we're only going to be getting a very slow drip-feed of information for quite some time. |
The Kickstarter page is up:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2 Things are certainly  moving fast... |
Well, at least they seem to have some sort of concept and plan. Tim was more like "Hey, give me money and I'll make an adventure game", at least here we know more what were getting.
Dont think Im gonna donate though, but if this comes out of course Im going to buy it. |
4 days to get 900 grand. Do people get their money back if they don't make that? Oh well the idea written down sounds interesting...but at the same time sounds like a dig at Fallout 3 and New Vegas doing something new. But hey if it is a good game I don't care, I won't be throwing money at it I have other alpha games to support. But if it comes out and interests me I will buy it.

They're doing really well so far, over 750k funded (out of 900k).
I decided to add to the fund myself, went for the $250 option. Now of course, there's a very long wait before the game is actually available. Kind of the main problem with paying for a game so far in advance. |
I so envy you if you're really gonna get one of those medals someday.
|
"someday" might be in a few years time though! (provided they don't go bust, or whatever)
|
ITS FULLY  FUNDED!!!

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012...one-condition/ Also on Chris Avellone's Twitter: Q. Amazing news: re possibly being onboard with Wasteland 2. But would you still be able to potentially do ur own kickstarter? A. Yep! But I really, really want to work on WL2, too. Well, 2012 is certainly shaping up to be an :) interesting year for RPGs... |
This is going to be ridiculously awesome. I hated Bethesda's attempt (FO:NV was okay but it was still crippled by Beth's terrible engine), so it'll be really nice to play a true sequel to FO2. I also loved Dragon Wars and a lot of older stuff he's been involved in, so here's hoping that it'll have a ton of variety and rely on different skills for different outcomes, etc...
The interviews reinforce that, too. EDIT: Quote:
Don't really want to have this argument but Wasteland 2 is probably gonna rule. |
"True sequel" to Fallout 2? Pffft. Fallout 3 did fine. Better than fine.

I don't really understand the negativity in this thread. I think fan-sponsored projects is one of the best ideas to happen in a long time. Especially for people like us who don't want all of our games to be shooters with a sprinkling of RTS (with a little RPG flavor thrown in). Big game publishers will not publish old-style RPGs - they just don't make the big bucks. That means it is up to those who loved Wasteland to make Wasteland 2. That's fine because then the publishers won't get their greasy fingers on it and screw it up.
Right now, for a measly $15 you can assure yourself a (download) copy of the game when it comes out. That's quite a bargain. If you go for the $50 pledge (add $15 shipping if you are overseas, sorry), you get the boxed set with printed manual and a map on cloth. That's not a bad deal either. I am in for $50. Oh and to clarify a few points from earlier in this thread: 1) If the pledge goal was not met in 30 days then the project will have failed and no one would have paid a dime. That is not the case since they have already met their goal (and they still have 16 days to go!). Even so, no one will pay a dime till the 30 day time limit is up. That's when they settle up. 2) This is not a sequel to Fallout. This is a sequel to Wasteland. The original Wasteland is available for free download really really close by, if you want to try it out. (The graphics are really old-fashioned, but the game is great!) -edit- I really use the word 'really' too much. |
Everyone and his dog is starting a Kickstarter nowadays. It'll only take one game that disappoints the funders to have the bubble burst.
I agree with TheChosen on Fargo, but I must say I've been pretty excited about Jane Jensen's Kickstarter just today. She's trying to relive the old days of Sierra, it seems. |
It does seem everyone is trying to get in on this Kickstarter stuff doesn't it. Jane can do whatever she wants, but it wont end up brining back classic Sierra games you would need Al Lowe, the Two Guys from Amdromeda and JIM WALLS to pull that off oh and Ken...Roberta might get a look in if she promises that Phantasmagoria was bad and she won't do it again.
I wont go into the whole Fallout 3 thing, if you don't like it that is fine but as a huge fan of the Fallout games it had to be one of the best things that ever happened. New Vegas is a steaming pile of bugs and it has nothing to do with the engine it has to do with the people at Obsidian not being able to make a game for the life of them. |

Bit pre-emptive as two of those games aren't out yet, and the other doesn't even have a solid concept other than "Its an adventure game".
And the rest I've never heard of. |
