...people who put a whole line of emoticons in their posts? Do they think it will annoy people into responding to them, or do their fingers lock up when they click on the smiley? Either way, it should be construed as spam and punishment should be levied.

Tulac 21-01-2005 10:03 PM

Even more annoying are one smiley/word posts.

Kon-Tiki 21-01-2005 10:05 PM

Yeah!

(note the single-line/word post here, and the total lack of any rellevant information.. it has gone Off Topic a looong while ago. Typical SPAM-post)

MasterGrazzt 22-01-2005 01:06 AM

Like I said before, there's a huge difference between spam and just stupidity.

I just can't stand these newbies who put a huge line of :help: in their "i cnt gt teh gme 2 werk" posts to draw attention to themselves.

Titan 22-01-2005 04:58 AM

Well.. exelent demonstration what happens when you make pointless and confusing posts...

Seriously thou: not all ppl are as familiare with the normal "rules" on the net, unfortunally... and alot of them are 11 yr old kids who just found this site and think it's all about free games.

I sugest that you either IGNORE those posts, or do an honest attempt to TRY and figure out wtf the question was, and give an answer to what you THINK is the question.. :eeeeeh:

cheesegrater 22-01-2005 05:08 AM

I think it is people trying to be cool and funny over the internet. They have failed.

FreeFreddy 22-01-2005 07:52 AM

Those posts with only smileys or with some unrecognizeable words + smileys don't bother me really. If I figure out the sense of the post, I answer if it's call for help and I can help. If it's spam, I could (sometimes) answer in similar way. Or just ignore it (more often). ;)

Many people are Spamming on the whole forum

Eagle of Fire 22-01-2005 05:38 PM

I never answer to a post which makes no sense. The best I'll do is ask the person to better explain himself.

Most of the time, it only shows how unrespectfull someone can be anyways.

And then??

Count it as Spam??

Or just leave the person there???

Tulac 22-01-2005 10:11 PM

About the one smiley/word post thing , It's OK when someone posts something that actually has a meaning like thumbs up or whatever, but it's annoying when someone posts just to make his postcount go higher... And one word/smiley posts are mostly used just for that...

Eagle of Fire 22-01-2005 10:22 PM

As Tulac said, it depend. You can't just flag all one emoticon posts as spam. Such moderation is always case by case... There is not really a precise and definite version of the rules for Spam, flamming etc due to the fact that they are concept and not something you can really refer at.

Also, you need to be more lenient on newbies. A newbie posting half a dozain :help: emoticons usually only try to get attention to get their problem solved fast... When this happen, I usually either completely ignore the icons or don't rush to find the answer if I don't know it right away. But taking action would really be a bad move in that particular case.

If it was a regular, then a warning via PM would probably be enough. If regulars were stupid enough to do that in the first place... Which is really not the case here. :ok:

The sad fact is; every single user we've had problems with has been below the age of 15.

Sorry if this is offencive to you, but it's the facts on this site up to now.

It all has to do with inexperience.

Also as said here, it totaly depends on what the reply is, and just a smilie CAN be ok sometimes....

Maikel 22-01-2005 11:28 PM

Sometimes you just have to smile ....and you have nothing to say.

:D

einherjar 22-01-2005 11:32 PM

Nah... if all you can post is a smilie or an l.o.l., then you shouldn't post at all.

What bothers me is people who really don't have anything to say, saying it anyway! Normally in an aggressive way with excessive swearing! LOL

einherjar 22-01-2005 11:34 PM

Well, getting hostile and swearing in a thread isn't spamming...

No, but there are those who overdo it.

I don't have a problem with swearing but I do have a problem with swearing for the sake of swearing because some people seem to think it makes them look good. And quite often you can't decipher the message behind the swearing in which case I think it probably counts as spam.

einherjar 22-01-2005 11:39 PM

Well, spamming in a forum amounts to making a large amount of meaningless and repetitive posts in individual threads, or making pointless posts. Most forums I belong to, including those in which I participate as a moderator, consider one smilie or net-acronym in a post to be spam.

Exactly and I would consider (continuing my previous point) a post that is so hostile and full of swearing that it is unreadable to be meaningless and irrelevant to other forum members and therefore spam.

Moderation is about judgement. For example, if you're on a small forum you don't go too hard on minor spam, because if you moderate too harshly you'll put people off posting. On a large forum, you need to come down hard on spam because the forum is chaotic enough without loads of spam mixed in. In the right context, a one smiley post could be appropriate. In most context's, it isn't. It's down to the moderator to decide whether that one smiley post actually contributed to the thread or not!

Nah. It would be illegal, but it wouldn't be spam. Depending on the purpose of such a post, it would be edited or deleted.

On the other hand, there are those forums where reaching a set level of posts brings benefits, and if mods ignore simple posts, then the system would be abused. Forums and chat rooms are very different from each other. A single smilie is acceptable in a chat room, but not in a forum.

But that's the point about context. On this forum, you don't gain any status by post count. If you do it so much it becomes annoying to other members then action needs to be taken but if it's just the occassional one it is not going to make any difference! If it's an occassional :roflol: in response to a joke when you can't think of anything else but want to convey what you thought, it's pointless but it does actually convey an opinion. If I went through every game in the Games Discussion and posted :ok: or :not_ok: , that would require action!

einherjar 23-01-2005 12:02 AM

There are still fringe benefits associated with one's post count, however. The post count cannot differentiate between legit and illegitimate posts.

Tulac 23-01-2005 11:17 AM

There were some very spamfull topics I've seen but they were deleted, maybe the mods should just close it as an omen to everybody with a note like this is spam or something similar.

Nope... but a mod/admin can, and will just carve away any posts the user doesn't deserve to have :)

How many smilies would be nessesary, to show all human emotions? :D
if we could show all emotions, their might be a talk like...from person to person...ehmmm :bye:

a bit :ot:

i think smilies are a good way to show what you feel and bring your text to life

so if any one writes tgf :bannana: :blow: fghjng :Jesus: gjnh  :roflol:
he just want to say hello my name is people and im dizzy

just not the right smilies to say so LOL

nothing to anger about

Omuletzu 30-01-2005 12:21 PM

Emoticons are very good(lousy way to start your case :not_ok: ).What i mean is that a smilie can make a post look beautiful, and even give it more meaning.I don't have a problem with one smilie posts. As long as it doesn't abuse the power of the smilie, and the post is on topic, i have nothing against it.Of course every once in a while noobs come and post something like 10 x :help: .This is bad, but as a moderator i rarely edit those posts.Because i understand that the person only wants to draw our attention.

wormpaul 30-01-2005 03:44 PM
