Here's a list of games that ARE NOT abandonware. Why am I posting this? Because some of the games on the list are present on this site
I don't know how accurate the list is, but check it out.

:( :( :( :( :(

That was an extremely demoralizing read...

So, what happens now?

Omuletzu 22-05-2004 12:32 PM

I'm just posting this so that Kosta doesn't get in any trouble that's all.I'm hoping he has some sort of agreement with the companies that still sell the games on abandonia.Who knows

FreeFreddy 22-05-2004 03:37 PM

This list is surely a non-official, personal opinion, because i've seen most of the games on this list not been sold anymore and downloadable on most sites with abandonware. That sites seem to not have any troubles though...

I suppose that for some games their companies just stop to "care" anymore. And it seems a bit logical. Copyrights etc stop to be important at some time ( after 8-10 years at least for sure ) especially if the game isn't too famous or isn't too well known. And to be more precise, the company that made it ( if it still exists ) cannot make any more money from it. In that case i believe that games are trully "forgotten" by their companies. But when this happens their copyright status remains a bit "foggy".
This is becoming very annoying... my opinion is that some companies try to stop abandonware not because of copyrights etc... but because they fear that it is lowering the sells of their newer games.

Kosta 23-05-2004 03:19 PM

Yeah, I knew about that list, and I am aware that some games on this site ARE still being sold, but think about this:
Let's say you have a kid, and he wants to play a civilization game. So he heads off to google, writes civilization (or finds it in his favorite PC magazine), then he ends up on the Atari site and buys Civilization 3. The chance that he bumps into Civilization 1, and decides to BUY it after he sees how it looks like is equal to ZERO. So, the only possible buyer for such a game would be a hardcore fan, who would buy it only because of some sentimental reasons. There could be no other motive since today's civ games are both better looking and more advanced. So, if a person decides to buy the game for such reasons, the fact that it can be downloaded freely is NOT going to change his/her mind. That is why I think it is pointless for companies to pursue the rights to such games at full extent, and that is why they don't do it. I could put up ALL of the games from that list to the site, and no company would ask me to remove them, I'm certain of this. So if a game or two from that list appears here, it doesn't matter. No one will mind

Doom-GT Interactive ??? Wasn't it id and apogee?

Omuletzu 24-05-2004 11:30 AM

Yay, that was a burden on my chest
[EDIT]Have you checked your abandonia inbox Kosta?

Abandonware= Games you can't buy IMHO.

abandonware = software that was abandoned. no one cares about it anymore because no one will buy it anyway.

The Niles 01-06-2004 09:03 PM

That list is not accurate. Some of the games on there are NOW abandonware (like X-Wing). That one is not being sold anymore by Lucasart.

Ieremiou 19-06-2004 04:48 AM

Yeah there are plenty of games that ARE abandonware but the IDSA i think they are.. don't care.. they will fight any website that trys to host "copyrighted" games even if the company "isn't selling them" anymore. :( I hate that... That happened to many of the greatest old Abandonware sites that existed.

Note: My Personal Opinion is.. since nobody cares about MS-DOS anymore.. Anything that needs MS-DOS support should be considered abandonware because the orignal OS system doesn't exist in a usable format with products unless you scrounge for it and all other clones of it (ie CMD) don't support them either.

Tom Henrik 19-06-2004 09:34 AM

That is actually a great way to look at it.

Since MS-Dos itself is abandonware, then logically all games that reguire it should also be considered abandonware... Alas game-companies are stubborn and stupid... :(

I'm not sure if you know it, but just a few days ago, VU Interactive actually shut down Sierra. I think that could be the final sign that they just don't care about the old games by that company, but I'm not sure. Might wanna look into that...

mika 25-06-2004 05:20 PM

Sierra closed? That's so sad! like losing an old friend :(. I mean there was always hope...

Found the page where I read about it. VU's policies towards the old games ticked me off. Whereas most of the LucasArts classics are still available for purchase, VU are incredibly afraid of losing money, so they just keep all the masterpieces in the vaults. Somebody should actually tell them how many money they've been losing by doing that...

Havell 25-06-2004 07:58 PM

How did Sierra close? They published lots of good games recently, including Half-life Generation (The second best selling game EVER!), they should be rolling in cash!

olzen 25-06-2004 08:21 PM

"Restructuring" it seems. Big corporations don't give a damn...

:?: Dont believe thats true. There is no mention of it anywhere on their website (and its still up and running). And why on earth would Vinvendi close them down? They are a big company and they even released a major new title just a few days ago (Ground Control II).

FreeFreddy 03-07-2004 09:26 AM

They not only closed Sierra, but also nagging on Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo II / Warcraft III) already...

Omuletzu 03-07-2004 10:03 AM

It cannot be they can't shut down blizzard!!! Westwood and now blizzard?? What is the world coming to???

Havell 03-07-2004 10:05 AM

Who these VU guys anyway? Did they just spring out of nowhere?

FreeFreddy 03-07-2004 10:43 AM

Vivendi Universal, publisher and mother company of Blizzard Entertainment along with some other.
They seem to have financial difficulties at the moment...

J 04-07-2004 06:56 AM

well..

I agree with Costa, u know some poeple wanna make $ some people dun't, just wanna share with people who have the same interest as us. In fact some games I have are downloaded or borrow from some friends that have been in ages inside their wardrobe, so y not share it out, besides these coys dun bother much as these are old games anyway, people nowadyas are going for newer or online games..so they are concentrating much over that stuffs instead on outdated stuffs where $ is concerned.....

Cheers
J

I think VU can afford to take over a large chunk of the gaming industry as they are not just into gaming, they also supply water to a big area of Britain so they have a steady supply of money coming in to buy up gaming companies.
