What does the original CD have that the free version doesn't?

Apparently you don't know that a lot of ol'games lovers still have MsDos compies around, and then yes, you need the CD.

Yeah, I get that... but what does a CD image have? I'm a newbie to the technical stuff, go easy on my please.

A CD image is a file with all the information from the original disk. With the appropriate software it can be burned into a CD, or "mounted" as a "virtual" CD drive that you can use as if you had the real CD inserted in an additional CD drive.

Isn't the need for the CD the same in DOSBox and DOS?

I think so... I have a folder called "DFCD" which works as a CD (I mount it to D in DOSbox...)
I just thought that a disk image might contain something not included in the free version of Daggerfall (if there is any difference between the free version and the original disk version). Like Arena; the original disk version of Arena had voice-overs for the cutscenes, while the freeware doesn't...

There's no such difference in the case of Daggerfall. In the case of Arena I think it was the CD or the floppy release. Daggerfall was obviously only released in CD. There's one release, both before and after it was made free, the content of the disk and your DFCD folder should be the same I think.

By the way, whatever disk you install from, you should patch afterwards, because I think a patched CD was never released. You can find the patch in the extras sections. From what you say it seems you followed the instructions provided by Bethesda at the time of the freeware release, in that case you're cool too, since they included an instruction to apply the patch.

An image file contains a number of "metadata" beyond the files itself (for example the disk label). Sometimes a game might check these data, other times disks contain non standard metadata and even a normal image won't work (specially for copy protection purposes). Daggerfall doesn't perform sophisticated checks on the disk besides the label.

What exactly did they update there? The page seems the same as before. Did they add some new content to the download (the manual maybe?)?
