Only months away before the completion of the greatest film in the history of mankind (James Cameron's Avatar)! :mischief:

I'm a little bitter about Avatar, since I'll never be able to see it in the full-3d it's supposed to be.
The chances of an IMAX or similar type of cinema opening near me is exceedingly slim. Although I do hear he is making a game side-by-side the film, and is putting a lot of effort into that, so it's not just a crappy cash in. |
looks interesting! Is there a exact release date?

James Cameron is the creator of the Terminator films, Aliens, The Abyss, Strange Days, Titanic and a couple of fantastic documentaries. Avatar employs more than 1,000 people in its film, with a budget of more than three hundred million dollers. A selected few have inspected a demo version of the film, and it's incredibly awesome! Or so Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Peter Jackson and a few of others claim. It uses revolutionary 3D technology, unmatched ever. According to the viewers, the creatures and ambients of the alien planet are as if completely alive. They make The Lord of the Rings' Gollum, Pirates of the Carribean's Davy Jones and King Kong's...erm...King Kong, look as if made on Commodore 64 using Basic. That technology itself is being improved/redevelopped by James Cameron. Quote:

The game cannot even begin to be compared to the film, but even in the gaming industry - it stands on the place of the biggest video game project ever. James Cameron is looking over it. Here's a screenshot from the game (in-game!). It uses a similar (but naturally, considerably more primitive when compared to the filM) 3D technology: http://www.bscreview.com/wp-content/...ts/avatar2.jpg |
I haven't heard of this film before, but it seems interesting :)

from what i understood in the youtube link it's fake

Here's the other two: |

According to imax.com, my nearest imax is 83 miles away. Thats fantastically convenient. Also, it seems there are only four or five in the entire country (of over 61 million people). I am suprised that my nearest one is in Bradford, but thats the only strange one, since the others are in Glasgow, Manchester and London. Given that Newcastle as a city has a population of approximately 190,000 people, and that combined with Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland (all very nearby) you could increase that to close to 1million, I feel we are routinely ignored except for a place to go and get wankered on a stag night. (figures from Wikipedia). |

In Germany there are five IMAX cinemas, three of them 3D, for over 80 million citizens, and - funny like hell - two of them (one 3D) are only 36 (the 3D one) and 39 miles away from me, living my rural life, not wanting to experience lame contemporary inventions like 3D cinema. :bleh:
The trailer is divine up until 0:30. But I can't find out which song it is. :( |
If theres an alternative to IMAX in the UK, and specifically one near me, then I'd be all ears.
But theres no way I'm gonna travel across the country just to see a "real 3D" film. I'm sure it's amazing and everything, but it's not that amazing that I'll travel just to see a film, when I can walk into the city and watch in a regular cinema (or get a DVD). |
Aha, it's The Drifters (or somebody else) with Up On The Roof! :music:

I'm myself going to watch in the Slovenian or Greek theatres (Colosseum or Ster Cinemas). They don't go without 3D. :mischief: |

I thought it's about Ultima. :)

Here it is:

I've seen the trailer, and I have to say it's very unimpressive.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/avatar/ It'll be decent enough I suppose, I doubt he's made a turkey. I also expect it to be successful, but not Titanic successful. I just don't see anything that's going to be so amazing, so revolutionary, that it will change the way we look at cinema. Now, you may think I'm being unkind, but this is the level of hype that is being pushed for this thing. I get the feeling they've overshot, and should expect a hype backlash. On the plus side, I think my local cinema has shelled out for some 3D equipment, so I may actually be able to see it as intended, since I've yet to see any of these new-fangled 3D films. (even though 3D films have been around since the fifties.) |

Hmm... You're right! I never considered the multimillionaire James Cameron's feelings. Perhaps I should write him a letter of apology? Mind you, I have recently got myself a nifty stereoscopic 3D gaming kit, so I'm not against this new 3D stuff entirely... |

I'm just trying to note that it is impossible that thousands of people across the world, including people much more wealthier than James Cameron (Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, George Lucas,...), have all been bribed to give the image that Avatar is not only worthy of all this hype, but vastly underestimated. I also think that it is hardly possible that all of them are wrong. Mind you, there is not a single individual of those thousands, not even one, which shows skepticism... :max: Therefore, no, I do not understand your own. |
Well, I never said I was against it, nor did I say it would flop.
I suggested it wouldn't live up to the hype, and we have yet to see if it will. Those videos just showed that people are amazed by the technology, not by the story, not by the acting, just the 3D. It may very well be the best use of 3D in cinema to date, but that still won't impress me unless he can put together a good film to go with it. I found the third video the best though, it had far more thought on the film as a whole, rather than just the technology. However, there were three quotes in particular I would mention. "I never thought the storyline for jurassic park was all that great, but seeing those dinosaurs was amazing" This was the impact the 15min Avatar 3D trailer had on him, that the CGI/3D is as advanced past current film as those dinosaurs were at that point in the 90s. This also highlights my concern for the story of Avatar, is this just a feature-length tech demo? "I can't piece together a lot of the narrative" Again, concerns for the story, despite the exceedingly high praise for the technological side. "not a movie I would see... by a regular TV [or other] method" Is this high quality 3D so important that it would be no good for DVD and TV showings? DVD sales are how the vast majority of films make their money. I would imagine there is a good chance he's made a "Titanic" of a film. For Cameron, that would mean another success, and a good shout for an oscar or two. For me, that would be a disappointment, as I wouldn't want to watch Titanic more than the once (I have tried to watch it again on TV, but wondered what I'd seen in it the first time). [edit] totally forgot to mention about one of my pet hates of the CGI film industry, which apparently occurs in this film. See further at TV tropes: Ink Suit Actor. |

The preview begins with James Cameron describing the advanced technology and the 21st century and all, and then notes he will show a total of 4 (though not fully complete) scenes from his project, which follow it. Judging that Avatar might end up as a impressive visual but poor film e.g. Chronicles of Riddick is baseless, at least for now. It would be same as claiming The Hobbit would be (a) bad film(s). :D Also, if you're in for some serious review of the Avatar Day, check out: http://uk.movies.ign.com/dor/objects..._26082009.html |
I was too lazy to read what it is...
What is avatar??? |

A most-expected film of today and the biggest film project in the history of the filming industry. :max: |
Also worth noting that it's James Cameron's next big thing, which he hopes will change cinema forever.
It also shouldn't be confused with "The Last Airbender", which is a completely different film based on a cartoon or somesuch. It's actually quite amazing over these past months how many times I've seen the two mistaken for each other... particularly by people who don't want to skim through a topic. |

My thoughts
Well, this film is far from flawless, but is absolutely stunning. This experience to the theatre was definitely worth it, one of the best to date - and will definitely be the topic for decades to come.
8.5 out of 10 is my rating |
For me it was a total turnoff.
Sure, good animations and so on.. but that was expected after all the hype, and that movies made 2009 are supposed to be better then Matrix. Quite a few time lip-sync went to have a coffee-break, and it looked like some old HongKong Kung-Fu movie. For me it was a 5 or 6 of 10.. not more. It was too predictive. No surprises. Another movie in the Hollywood-jungle. |
I hate to repeat what I'm sure most of you have heard but my review can be summed up with 5 words
"Dances With Wolves... In Space..." And that's all it was really, sure it looked good but I wasn't "Blown Away" as most of the hype was saying about it. I don't see it as changing the way movies are made, however it's not a really bad movie, its just a movie that was left under a photocopier. 3 out of 5 for me. |
Did you watch it in 3D?
