New Monkey Island!

Holy three headed monkey!

Tomekk 01-06-2009 04:59 PM

HOLY SH*T!

Panthro 01-06-2009 05:00 PM

Not sure if I'm happy or not...

I'm going to go with cautious optimism.

Acethor 01-06-2009 05:03 PM

Wowoweeeee!!! Look behind you it's a new Monkey Island!

Lulu_Jane 01-06-2009 05:07 PM

Finally, a reason not to throw out my Wii.

Panthro 01-06-2009 06:09 PM

Had a look at the websites n stuff, and I really like the look of the remake ("special edition"!), but the telltale stuff I don't like the look of so far. Will have to wait and see.

skillz 01-06-2009 07:37 PM

I loved Monkey islands..can't wait to try this

Frodo 01-06-2009 07:46 PM

It will be great to have more Monkey Island  but I'm not sure about that picture of Guybrush & Elaine :max:

Guess I'll have to wait and see. :)

EDIT
You can see more about both Monkey Islands on Abandonware Ring, including footage of the new games. I'm definately sold on Monkey Island Special Edition. Not so keen on the graphics for Telltale's Tales Of Monkey Island, but I'll be buying them both anyway. :3:

it's coming out for the PC too, so you can throw that Wii out.

Erich Zann 02-06-2009 04:06 PM

The characters in the remake are so f*cking ugly it makes me sad : just find the haircut designer and slice him open (not to speak of the picture of Guybrush & Elaine in the original link)

And the new stuff looks awful just the same :
That supposed to be the Voodoo lady ???
Yick...

Seriously, what the hell ? Looks like some moronic cross of Grim Fandango and Tim Burton cartoons.
If you're only going to desecrate them, let the dead remain buried.

I know I sound bitter. But I didn't went from enthusiastic to disappointed this fast in a long time.

BranjoHello 02-06-2009 08:11 PM

I agree that the style is too Burton-ish. :doh2:

El Quia 03-06-2009 04:50 PM

I agree that the haircut is... strange... And what's up with the goatee? I mean, in the first game, guybrush is supposed to be a baby-face, which made funny he wanted to be a pirate! He always looked younger than he is!

But yeah, I would totally play it, anyway...

Hatsen 03-06-2009 06:00 PM

Yeah, the art dissapoints me too.
Can't they find him a good face? They have pretty much made changed his face throughout the series for every release.

Kugerfang 03-06-2009 06:42 PM

Go play the original instead.

Loe420 03-06-2009 10:01 PM

Cool... dont suprise me though Lucas Arts cant come up with any thing new they have to just Revamp the old... Kinda like Star Wars <grin>

Player2 05-06-2009 06:32 AM

I don't think they could've made Guybrush look any creepy-er without making him not look like Guybrush. I think I'll just stick to the classic that I can play for free and delivers the same results. I really think that the art style would completely ruin the experience for me.

TheChosen 05-06-2009 01:35 PM

Shees. What happened to the old "graphics arent everything" talk?

Well, except graphics MI has only story and puzzles. Since we already know the story and how to solve the puzzles, the only thing left is the graphics. It's the only thing we can actually criticize

jg007 05-06-2009 08:35 PM

Damn somebody beat me to the post :)

I really enjoyed the sam and max games from telltale, and as a long time MI fan I am really looking forward to this and will almost certainly buy it

having said that I quite enjoyed curse of MI and lots of people didn't , for me as long as there is some good humour thrown in I don't really care if the characters look exactly the same.

El Quia 06-06-2009 01:49 AM

I have also enjoyed Curse of Monkey Island, even though I am a long time lover of the first two MI. It has simply a lot of humor. An Murray. Oh, my god, Murray is between the most funny MI characters. The only MI that I didn't like (although it had a thing or two) was Escape From Monkey Island. It just simply wasn't good. And I can't believe what they did to Murray! I mean, so much potential an only have him as a promoter? C'mon!

Eleima512 06-06-2009 10:56 AM

I'm *really* looking forward to this new Monkey Island, I find it kinda exciting! As a long time Monkey Island fan, I bought 'em all, and even though Escape from Monkey Island didn't live up to the expectations that Curse of Monkey Island had spawned, it was still good (I agree with El Quia, they *totally* killed Murray, he had so much potential, he was just plain *awesome*!).
I'm still hoping that we'll get a MI5 some day (hey, the voodoo lady said she had an unbreakable 5-game contract! ;) ), but in the meantime, this revamp of MI1 should be fun!

There isn't, since the very beginning, a single consensual line of artistic design for MI. I remember being appalled when the 3rd and 4th instalments came out. I understand the reluctance to accept yet another artistic flair, but the series evolved with and for the times they were released in. The uneasy felling will pass, eventually, as it did in the past - for me, Guybrush Threepwood will always be both the pixelated hero in the first two games and the Holliwoodesque Steve Purcell cover art and in-game closeups. Oh, and he has Dominic Armato's voice. :perv:

Even Ron Gilbert wonders if:

Quote:

THE END
P.S. I was always bothered by these close-ups. While they were great art, I never felt they matched the style of the rest of the game. Not sure how I feel about them 20 years later.
...which in turn received a torrent of comments by anonymous readers - which I more or less agree with:

Quote:

I loved this close-up actually! It felt like a jump back to a higher reality back then.. like "the dream is over" or something.. and recall getting my first boner (I think) by Elaine. That's right, Mr. Gilbert! - You have made me a man!
Quote:

Agree about the closeups. Guybrush looks like a real hero, not a doofus.
Quote:

Like some said before me, the closeups were nice. They gave a warm, fuzzy feeling of seriousness that endeared me to the game even further.
Quote:

I've always though that meanwhile Monkey I and II were two master pieces that share the same spirit, all the nex games without you lost an internal coherence. Monkey III is unauthentic. Like jews with new testament, I've always considered subsequent games fake and not part of the Monkey Island Canon :) Only on exemple: In Monkey I/II Elaine is a charismatic and intelligent lady with strong character, in Monkey 3 is a helpless housewife. Plus the new art style without Steve Purcell was too childish.

Lucas. Remake. Lucas. Remake. Why is everyone surprised? Next he'll be making sad, sad prequels. Someone should have shot him after Return of the Jedi. No offense, George.

After RotJ?

Coming back onto topic... the artwork has never been consistent, and I think I was always most fond of Lechucks Revenge. It was really a mix of the jacket and of course his newly grown "beard".

I thought the third was well done also, from a visual perspective, with some good voice acting. I'm glad they're keeping with the same people for that, otherwise it would be a bit jarring.

The telltale stuff however appears to be using the same type of design as their Sam & Max series, which feels very odd to me. It sort of worked with S&M, but looks very odd with MI. In fact, I'd say it looks as bad as Escape.

I don't actually think even EMI was that bad, I did not really like the control system or the monkey combat junk but other than that it was okay

zorrobomber 09-06-2009 01:39 PM

Remake: ok
Series: we'll see

virumor 09-06-2009 02:00 PM

I'd be happier if LucasArts made the Full Throttle sequel. :noworry:

Quintopotere 10-06-2009 12:04 PM

I'm disappointed by the screenshots of the remeke...

...but I cannot stop loving Guybrush!!

I'll play it anyway!

Quintopotere 11-06-2009 07:02 PM

Sorry for double posting... but is it possible that this topic has only 28 posts in 11 days!

Come on, it's a great news!

... maybe I've to write something in the 3xblah area...

Quintopotere 11-06-2009 07:11 PM

Monkey I and Monkey V

I hope you all knows the great news about Monkey Island remake and sequel (if not, go read what Ron Gilbert say about that here: http://grumpygamer.com/)

Contrary to what I was thinking, I realized that I'm most excited about the remake, than about the sequel... maybe it's just because of the episodic form or it's all about nostalgic... :monkey:

What do you think about the whole thing?

Tulac 11-06-2009 07:16 PM

Dude there's a topic in favorite oldies and newbies.

Quintopotere 11-06-2009 07:28 PM

I know... I just want to have opinions about the "big picture"...

It just about me, or it's in an abandonian guy soul to prefer a good remake more than an unpredictable sequel of a masterpiece like that?

El Quia 11-06-2009 07:41 PM

I think that the other thread was enough for discussing this... but I think that a remake is always received with more anticipation than a sequel, because of all the fan base that love the original. Obviously, this can backlash, with all the fans shouting what a big steaming pile of crap is the remake and how they managed to kill everything good about the original.

The sequels, on the other side, are sometimes cut some slack because people expects them to be at least slightly different from the original.

cnquist 12-06-2009 09:45 PM

Wow! Monkey Island with voices, me wantee. But then again they could really mess it up. I'm going to hope they do it right. One thing I was unclear on is are they only releasing this game on XBox Live?

Quintopotere 12-06-2009 10:28 PM

I've found the voices in the trailer of the remake, very good :)

As I've understood, both games will be also for PC...

TheChosen 18-06-2009 03:38 PM

Seems like there's more remakes on the way

http://kotaku.com/5294555/lucasarts-...enture-remakes

red_avatar 18-06-2009 04:19 PM

I'm mostly just glad they ditched the horrible Escape from Monkey Island interface. It showed that Lucas' priorities were with consoles instead of PC. The system that Telltale Games use, is a very good one.

Ranthalion75 18-06-2009 05:14 PM

I'm REALLY looking forward to this one! Not very many games lately that I care much about. I was looking forward to the new Ghostbusters, but they ditched Multi-play on the PC, so that blew it for me. But the new Monkey Island... That has got to be GOLD!

Panthro 18-06-2009 05:16 PM

I have heard that they don't want to do Monkey Island 2... which makes me very sad.

El Quia 18-06-2009 05:17 PM

Of course, if it isn't gold, it must at least be live

Maybe, they finally understood that it's a good way to make some easy money, and make happy the fans, too!

Now I'm waiting also for a LOOM remake...

Noooooooooooo leave poor old Bobbin Threadbare alone, he's done you no harm !

Seriously, there is really something about this kind of reaction which, despite my best efforts, I cannot fathom.
It gives me the feeling that a lot of people play these old jewels in spite of their production.
I play them first and foremost because they are awesome but also because of their production. I love the graphics of Loom, of Monkey Island, of Indy 3, of the Case of the Serrated Scalpel... Am I the only one ?

Nothing to do with the fact that I find the remake visually awful as I said before, that's another matter. I'm really wondering about this enthusiasm about mere liftings. I like'em natural.

nem75 21-06-2009 10:47 AM

From the Kotaku item:

Quote:

"If this sells, there's no one at this company who doesn't want to do these games" says Lucasarts' Brooks Brown. "It's a matter of showing that there's interest and this market is alive and get people as excited as possible about Monkey Island Special Edition to show that these things can make it".
Not trying to get anyone's hopes down (hell, I'd buy remakes of Full Throttle and The Dig in a heartbeat), but to me this is just a way of saying "we will never do more remakes, if Monkey Island Special Edition does not launch surprisingly with more than 50000 copies sold its first week", and I would not hold my breath for that happening.

Of course I'll be happy as a three-headed monkey if things turn out for the better, but that's just my take on it for now.

(Also keep in mind that Brooks is "only" the Community Manager, not a decision-maker at Lucasarts.)

riccso 21-06-2009 01:32 PM

OMG OMG OMG GIMMEGIMMEGIMMEGIMMEGIMME(without Guybrush's ugly haircut)
They're using the voices of MI3,I loved 'em
And that Swordplay game on lucasarts's site...lol.

And DON'T make the series in 3D...It was good for Sam n' max but for MI...:nono:

red_avatar 23-06-2009 01:16 AM

The attitude Lucas Arts has, bugs me on several levels:

a) so they decide things, AGAIN, on a single game. They canceled Sam & Max 2 in the past despite the episodes doing really well which showed they made a bad decision - AND S&M2 would have been released for consoles as well while the episodes were far more PC oriented. People do NOT want Adventure games that require a gamepad or cursor keys to use - it's annoying and slow.

b) I think that most people who love Monkey Island have already completed the first game plenty of games but wouldn't find the remake to be worth a lot of money and knowing LucasArts they will retail it at at least 30 euros. I might still get it but many people may not despite them loving the game.

It's funny - it's the ideal time to release adventure games. What with the Wii being a family machine, adventure games would do really well there. Broken Sword has already been released and so have the Sam & Max episodes so why not make some NEW adventure games?

I admit they didn't change Guybrush in a good way. Ironically, I disliked the Telltale version less at first yet it's grown on me and I quite like the new look. When he's animated it fits him.
