Metal Lords

Looking out to find a copy of Metal Lords (aka Mech Lords), by Simtex. Prior to the company folding, a 100 MB reviewers copy on CD was released - it had enough circulation to make the Internet Games PC Top 100 for a few months in 1995.

Game was never released because of Simtex's financial troubles, so that makes the reviewer's CD the only version of it out there... unfortunately I've never been able to find a copy online... guess its large size made it to large to post in the 90's.

Hoping someone out there can stop me from getting all misty eyed whenever I see a screen cap of it in my old CGWs...

After a fairly exhaustive internet search (everything except torrents), nothing turned up. However, I do have a few ideas for you to try. You could email all of the magazines/websites who were likely to receive the copy and see if they have it stored somewhere. No guarantee, but you would be surprised what people will do. Another option is emailing Atari, who now have the rights to the game. This runs the risk of them thinking there is a market for the game and selling it. Which means the chance of you downloading for free dropped a million percent. Good Luck!

Not a bad idea... except SimTex (and Microprose, their parent) is long long gone, along with the physical IP. And the magazines from back then are gone now too... no more CGW... no more Strategy Plus.

Man... if I could convince Atari to SELL it, I'd be more than willing to spend $$$ on it.

Suppose I could try seeing who WROTE the previews in the old CGW/Strategy Plus mags, and emailing them...

Couldn't hurt to try the torrent sites, in that case; a torrent is arguably overkill for such a relatively small file, but it's still worth a try.

Not on any torrent site I could find.

Where did you hear about this "reviewers copy", BTW?

Its mentioned multiple times on usenet back in '95 - plus it showed up in the internet top 100 games around then as Metal Lords (demo).

Here's a few old references:

Metal Lords

[APPROVED] ?

The Fifth Horseman 17-01-2009 02:41 PM

Approved. The game was never published to begin with.
(of course, in such a case finding a leaked copy poses a problem in and of itself :p)

dtolman 14-02-2009 03:25 PM

Well... at least if it does turn up... its approved to be on here :)

thanks.

I'm not sure whether that's the thing you're looking for but I've got the whole demo movie of Metal Lords by Simtex. Not playable but certainly worth seeing. It was attached to CD Gamer vol. 14, Nov.1995 and it's only 66MB (35MB compressed).
I saved the CD only because of Metal Lords on it.

Please upload the game, if anyone finds it!

-.- only a Demo and not the Full Version?

The Fifth Horseman 17-11-2009 06:09 PM

It's a video preview. I believe that given the rarity of this game (which appears to be quite damn near unobtainable so far), it's worth preserving.

No. But the preview is quite unique for it contains recorded Metal Lords gameplay mixed with pre-rendered movies that picture the battle from the tactical mode. Quite a fun to watch I assure you.
As much as I know, this demo movie is the only trace of Metal Lords that SimTex left us before they were closed.
And I guess it will stay that way unless Atari finally finishes the game and releases it, which is... well... doubtful, to say at least. I don't even think they still got the code.

marko river 13-02-2010 02:17 PM

Can you at least upload the demo movie then?

Paco 13-02-2010 02:34 PM

@marko its already on FTP. As Mlords under Game Archives.

I can't find the demo , do you have the link ?!

DarthHelmet86 11-01-2012 04:42 AM

The demo is not on our site, it is on our FTP. Perhaps someone can record it and put it up on our Youtube since it is an unplayable video demo.

Ah , it's okay then. I got the demo elsewhere. Did Simtex ever released another demo where it's playable ?

The Fifth Horseman 11-01-2012 09:32 AM

Yes. So far it seems unobtainable, though.

I can't access the video preview on the ftp from work. Is it the same as this video preview on youtube?
