Review And Download (if available)

Mad-E-Fact 17-12-2004 05:00 PM

Nah, the review really doesn't do justice to the game. ;) It's really a very atmospheric dark adventure. I bought it for my AGA amiga, and it came with a hardback journal of the main character, where his writing becomes more and more twisted as his dreams are making him all psycho. Also there were some hints in there that you need to progress in the game. I really miss those days where you got that sort of gimmicks with your game that enhanced your playing experience.

ROFL this is an abandon ware site. use dos box to play 99% of the games on this site.

:bye: New guy here.

This is the game I was waiting for. Don't get me wrong the others here are great as well, but this is the one that I wanted to play for a long time...again.

I played this one a while back and loved it. It is a great game and was very dark. I loved one part of the game, I won't give it away but it is early on... :guns:

If you can find a copy of the book that comes with it, I would suggest you pick it up. It is the main person's diary and as he gets more and more insane, his writing shows that. It would be a good find if you like the game.

This site is the best one I have seen, keep up the great work.

Tom Henrik 18-12-2004 05:26 PM

It looks like it is time for me to do some internet seeking again

Fawfulhasfury 18-12-2004 06:02 PM

more and more insane, huh
sounds like an H.P. Lovecraft novel to me. :ok:

Found it. Making a .pdf file.

WOW! That is some good reading! :ok:
Expect it on the site one of these days.

Fawfulhasfury 18-12-2004 08:42 PM

Put it up!!!! I can't wait to read it!!!! :w00t:

Tom Henrik 18-12-2004 09:04 PM

Here is a small preview.

http://www.abandonia.com/~tomhenrik/Dreamy.png

The complete deal is not far away.

Fawfulhasfury 18-12-2004 09:07 PM

:w00t: Reminds me of the letters in the H.P. Lovecraft story The Whisperer in the Darkness, where one of the good guys became more and more sure that the living fungi of Yuggoth would seal his fate soon. Cool :ok:

Daywalker 20-12-2004 03:13 AM

Tom Henrik, you rock.

I can't wait for the file to come. I have said it before, this site is the best! :ok:

Tom Henrik 20-12-2004 02:34 PM

Thanks, man.

All the pictures are finished, now I am only waiting for Maikel to turn it into a PDF :)

Once that is done I will upload it at once!
(Especially since it appears to be some vital information on it. The last page is "Things I need to remember!"... I haven't played the game, but I believe this info is crucial for completing the game).

Soon...
In the meantime... you may all look at a lightswitch for the better part of 2 hours, and see if it speaks to you.

Havell 20-12-2004 03:50 PM

I can't download the game

When I click the second "get it!" button I get a prompt which says:
"Enter username and password for "kerner.dtdns.net" at http://kerner.dtdns.net".
Followed by username and password fields.

Tom Henrik 20-12-2004 10:24 PM

Uhm... try again?

Havell 20-12-2004 10:57 PM

I got it off the Underdogs :tomato:
And I tried it here about 3 times.

Tom Henrik 20-12-2004 11:02 PM

It works for me...

Havell 20-12-2004 11:05 PM

I just tried it, it works, don't know what happened back then.

Tom Henrik 20-12-2004 11:23 PM

I think it had to do with the server swap :)

Fawfulhasfury 20-12-2004 11:26 PM

Ah. So the server has been swaped now, huh. Well, all this talk is making me want to go download this game. Which is just what I'm a gonna do.

wendymaree 20-12-2004 11:44 PM

I've downloaded the game, and I'm really looking forward to playing it. Looks like my kind of thing. Great that you're preparing the manual, Tom. I'll wait until it's up before I start the game.

<<In the meantime... you may all look at a lightswitch for the better part of 2 hours, and see if it speaks to you.
>>

So this is how you spend your free time now? OMG

Tom Henrik 20-12-2004 11:50 PM

Oki... it seems like Maikel has died... <_<

Anyone with the capability of making a PDF, contact me. Let's get this booklet up! :D

And Wendy...
That is how the "hero" in DreamWeb spend his time ;)

Fawfulhasfury 20-12-2004 11:51 PM

 I think I can make one. :D And Maikel has died?

Tom Henrik 20-12-2004 11:54 PM

Contact me on MSN, faw.

Fawfulhasfury 21-12-2004 12:30 AM

ok, will tomorrow

Gormash 21-12-2004 06:52 AM

I can also make you a PDF out of the pictures.
I'm not trying to step on your toes, Faw, just adding options so that it'll be finished as soon as possible. I'd love a copy too, after all...
:Brain:

Anyways, added you to my MSN list, Tom. I go by the nick Gormash there as well. :bye:

Gormash 26-12-2004 04:47 PM

Just wanted to let you all know that the Dreamweb Diary have at long last been completed. The next time Tom Henrik logs on I'll send it to him, and he can add it to the site.
:w00t:

In the meantime, here is a little teaser about hoe it will look. I'm using the same teaser Tom Henrik used so as to not spoil it for you (it's a damn good read).

Garibaldi Biscuit 02-01-2005 12:31 PM

This was indeed a great game, a bit broken in places ( if you didn't take a certain item from the first two rooms you started in, you would be trapped later on ), but relentlessly gritty and atmospheric. Parts of it puzzled me though;

*SPOILERS*

What happened to the Priest? I was expecting a confrontation with something not quite human but it never happened, surely if he escaped then everything would have been doomed as your 'advisors' said he was on the brink of acension and had plans to destroy the Dreamweb ( or something ).

Perhaps this was subtle groundwork for a sequel, even though Ryan is gunned down at the end, hmmm.....

Mad-E-Fact 02-01-2005 12:54 PM

good job on the diary, as I said you need the info to progress in the game! :ok:

* * * SPOLERS * * *

I'm not sure about the plot, because I completed it long ago, but in the subway/underground crypts you find some bizarre tentacle monster, which I believe is the being you mean, and Ryan comments that something must have gone wrong for it, because it's dead? Or a I just making that up now?

Ahhh, you could be right there, I vaguely remember finding some trace of the Priest but its been so long since I played I thought it was just his skin or something.

MasterGrazzt 19-01-2005 01:13 AM

To me it looked like what was left in that chamber was a sort of cocoon. The Keepers said that his plans were "more than the simple conquest of the DreamWeb", so perhaps they didn't care what he did from then on.

This game really sets itself up for a sequel with Beckett's words. He says you will be eternally reborn and walk the Earth again and again.

And what's this nonsense about it "being like the Matrix, but not as well thought out"? I thought the Matrix was one of the most overrated films in recent memory. More so than Episode 1. I remember when I finally saw it, I sat down with a bowl of popcorn, ready to be taken on a ride... About fifteen minutes into the film I was throwing that bowl at the TV. Good god, was it bad. I should have suspected that when I learned that Keanu Reeves was the protagonist.

If you check the pinned messages in the troubleshooting section, I think you'll find a section that describes how to set up the config and the autoexec.bat for dos games. To have enough conventional memory all the devises must be loaded high...including DOS. Also games require that the Emm386.exe and Himem lines be added in config.sys like this:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM
devicehigh=C:\BTCCDROM.SYS /D:OEMCD001

This is how I've got the autoexec.bat configured:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
SET CTSYN=C:\WINDOWS
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM
LH D:\MOUSE\MOUSE.EXE

To get at the config.sys and autoexec.bat on my system (Win98) I just click on RUN and then type in sysedit.

Sometimes the Emm386.exe requires noems after it and sometimes RAM. These are tricky to configure, but worth trying to figure out as it will help you with all the other old games you want to play. Check to see if any readme files comes with the game archive as they might have tips on how to free up conventional memory to play the game.

Sollem 07-02-2005 08:16 PM

I reinstalled the game but i still can't pass trough the door to Edens apartament. Is it something wrong with my pc or does it has to be that way?

S0llem 08-02-2005 12:10 PM

I finally finished the game. I loved it! Too bad i couldn't finish without a walktrough

Taffer 22-02-2005 09:40 PM

Wow, this site is simply the best ! I really loved this game and bought the CD retail version, when? 6, 8 years ago ? Can't really recall but it has always been one of my all time favorite games, together with UFO/XCOM and the Thief series. The retail version came without the diary and I've been looking for it for all these years, and now I finally find it !! Thanks !!!!!!!! :ok: :Brain: :_)

Hobo Joe 23-02-2005 06:51 AM

Hi, I just downloaded the game and found this site looking for help. I'm running it in DOSBOX, and every time I start it up I have the same problem, maybe you guys can help..*crosses fingers*...

When the game starts, everything seems fine, it runs through the opening sequence, and when it gets to the start where it shows the guy in bed, it won't do much. I see a black pointer where my mouse is moving, but when I click on stuff it doesn't do anything. None of the keys seems to do anything except for one of them in the vicinity of "insert, home, page up, delete, end, page down". All it did was tell me something about the room though. So I hit my WINDOWS key to back out of DOSBOX and look for help on firefox, and when I returned to the game the graphics were all messed up but I could tell that the "examine" hand was now moving with my mouse and the box on the left was showing what the hand was on.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong here? This seems like a pretty cool game, and I was looking forward to playing it. Thanks in advance for any help you may provide :)

Wizborg 23-02-2005 10:16 PM

MAN I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!

I've had this for my amiga emulator for a while and been looking for Diary of a (Mad)Man for AGES... I'm gonna d/l this and see how it compares to the Amiga version.. Hope I'm not disappointed. ANy1 wants to play the original version, I suggest downloading WinUAE, AIAB (Amiga In A Box), the Kickstart Roms (P2P  ) and going to www.planetemu.net. The site's primarily in French, but the important bits are understandable.

Wizborg :max:

Mad-E-Fact 24-02-2005 03:33 PM

I had the AGA version of the game, so the graphics were actually better quality (256colors, and higher resolution), but they left out some details from the amiga version, like the rain on the streets.

Banjo 04-04-2005 12:02 PM

Hi!

Just arrived here and of course the first game I checked to see if was around was Dreamweb! Nah, I already own the CD version, but I wanted to see if there were other fans of the game... cool to find a few!

While there are a few things I REALLY wished were more fully developed in this game (longer scenarios for some of the characters, such as Underwood and Sartain) and resolution to some of the more 'glossed over' aspects (eg. Father O'Roarke's 'entropy', Chapel's murder), this actually remains one of my favourite games ever. I find it amongst the most atmospheric games I've ever played (ranking equal for me with Fallout and Full Throttle), there's just something about the admittedly simple music, the sound of the rain, the weary voices (on the CD) of so many characters (especially Ryan) that just builds a real sense of foreboding yet inevitable darkness. Sure, I still think it needed a couple of improvements, but overall I do love Dreamweb.

Just talking about it makes me want to play it again!!! But, maybe I'll see if I can track down the Amiga version and give that a try... :)

Incidentally, I'm in Australia and this game was one of several (like Phantasmagoria) that got 'withdrawn from sale' here (reportedly due to Crane's 'activities' before his demise). I remember getting my copy just a day or two before it got pulled from shelves. A coupel of years later, I saw a copy in a bargain bin and bought that too, just for good measure. Like I said, I REALLY loved this game.

Cheers,
Banjo

Karlo 10-04-2005 09:43 AM

DOES ANYBODY WHERE TO GET FORM THE FREE GERMAN VERSION OF "REALMS OF ARCANIA: STAR TRAIL"???? IF SO PLEASE POST IT!!!

Kevin_AU 10-04-2005 10:44 AM

G'day, just found this site. Some great games here. Good to see Dreamweb is not forgotten. I've also got the CD version (Got it in a bundle about 9 years ago).
Like what's been said before the atmosphere of this game!
Also included on the CD is a 'bonus' music track.

Banjo 10-04-2005 03:44 PM

The bonus track on the CD was cool... in fact, I really liked all the music in Dreamweb. It added a LOT to the atmosphere, and I still remember the Dealer's Theme/End Title track with fondess! I acutually extracted all the music from my own CD to listen to, and was surprised to find that each piece was very short, and simply looped! I never realised until I heard it outside of the game so I guess that means they did a good job using just short pieces as ambient music.

I don't know how big my MP3 I made of the CD bonus track is, but maybe it would be nice to have for download if folks were interested?

Cheers,
Banjo

Kevin_AU 11-04-2005 02:23 AM

The bonus track is 50MB as a wave, but I guess it'd be about 4 once converted to mp3. I don't remember much from the music aspect but my most vivid memory is the hotel scene(I don't I've been so surprised before), as well as the end scene in front of Ryan's house.
Also, looking at the pics for this game, how come it doesn't show Ryan with his sunny's or watch?!

Mad-E-Fact 11-04-2005 03:30 PM

Probably because the reviewer didn't have them put on when they took the screens?

reaperman93010 26-04-2005 02:10 AM

I miss this game so much! It warped my little mind as a child. Talk about atmosphere! as I look back on my life of video game playing, this is probably my single favorite. There just has never been another game like it.

and the ending is perfect, all that work really pays off *l*

I haven't been able to get the amiga version going, but the PC one works fine on my dos-xbox.

now if I just remember how to solve all those insanely hard puzzles... no walkthrough for me this time.

Davius 14-07-2005 05:29 PM

Hi everyone! I've just found this website today after doing a search for Dreamweb. I remember playing the demo years ago on my Amiga and thinking it was great, but I could never find the full version in the shops. I did eventually find the CD 'Talkie' version for PC second hand three or four years ago... and I was lucky enough to get the 'Diary of a (Mad?)Man' with it!

I had difficulties getting it to run properly back then, but I eventually got it to work with DOSBox. The Amiga version also looks good in WinUAE, and I have found I'm able to play the version I downloaded from this website using DOSBox with no problems.

It's good to see that there are still some fans of Dreamweb. It's a great game with a nice and spooky atmosphere. It doesn't seem to be remembered as much as other adventure games like Beneath a Steel Sky, Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer, but I think it's a classic all the same. :)

Banjo 16-07-2005 02:54 PM

Hi Davius!

At the risk of repeating myself, Dreamweb is simply awesome! Together with the Manhunter games from Sierra, it's one of the games oft-overlooked or unknown by others, yet stirs up real nostalgia and memories for me.

Having just got a new whiz-bang PC (where I actually NEED DOS-Box as poosed to owning one! LOL!), I intend to play around tomorrow to get Dreamweb up and running again.

Cheers,
Banjo

PS And as far as I'm concerned (re: the review on this site), Dreamweb is a darn sight better (and original!) than 'The Matrix'!!! :)

Guest 07-08-2005 11:17 PM

:help:
I played Dreamweb a few years ago and I loved it, but after loading and pushing the cart the game would always crash so I never finished it. :ranting: Now I downoaded it in hopes of finally finishing it and it freezes when I try to pick up the rocks to put in the cart.

Strangely this doesn't allways happen on the same rock. In my first run it would happen on the 6th (regardless of which rock that was), when I loaded an earlier game I managed to get seven before it froze on the 8th. It doesn't seem to matter if the previous rocks are in my inventory or in the cart. I tried this on different computers in DOS and with DOSBox (in Win98 and WinXP) and on different downloads (from here and HOTU - they seem identical) and it's allways the same.

Does anybody know why this happens and how I can fix it. If not, could I mail somebody my savegame so you can load the cart for me?

Hi!

I'm not sure why that's happening, though I seem to recall that part always being a little "troublesome" for some folks, though don't quote me on that.

I'm happy for you to send me your save and I'll see how it works on my machine and if I can pass that bit for you. (I've only just started using Doxbox and am surprised at how well almost every old game runs at full speed... I was thinking I'd made a mistake getting XP on my new computer!).

The only thing is, I play the CD version (I own the original), so if the two aren't compatible, I'll have to see if I can get the disk version I downloaded (yeah, I love the game that much) set up first.

But I hope I can yelp ya, anyway! Email me (this forum has a button for that, right?) the save and/or any other questions or problems.

Cheers,
Banjo

g. jobim 30-08-2005 07:01 PM

Ah, Dreamweb! One of the greatest games of all time, one of my favourite adventure games, a few others being Beneath a Steel Sky, Relentless and Twinsen's Odyssey.

Dreamweb is one of the most immersive games I've ever played. It's a great place to be. I totally disagree with the reviewer, about the useless objects. They add so much to the atmosphere! It feels like a real world. You can examine and collect peas, broken stuff... It's brilliant. I only notice this things being made now in those newer 3D shooters like Half-Life 2, where you can pick up and interact all kinds of stuff. Maybe they've been doing this for some time, but I rarely play anything at all these days (university, work... what a dull life).

I must've played Dreamweb two or three times. I also repeat what others have said: the atmosphere. The excellent sounds, the marvellous music... I could listen to that rain for hours... I've always been a fan of game soundtracks. I also got stuck sometimes, eventually needed a walkthrough. Perhaps I still have it somewhere, printed by a dot matrix printer on a continuous form paper...

I would be deeply thankful if someone could send me the CD files, with the voices... please contact me through ICQ (5727909), m$n (pepeeditiones@hotmail.com) or soulseek (zeurbano) .... I hope the sounds and music are the same. The music from the Beneath a Steel Sky CD for example has this terrible polished sound, much worse than the original 8-bit soundtrack...

Guest 30-09-2005 01:02 PM

I got this game on CD

Gelfo 30-09-2005 01:31 PM

Congratulations..

Dreamweb is ace isnt it. I love the diary of a mad man (thanks for having it up for DL!). I remember one of the poems in it was used in a magazine advertising campaign for the game

"The clock keeps going round
It wont tell me the time
Santa Clause gave a gun to me
Let loose the puppies of war
I died last night"

Brilliance!

If I recall correctly. If you managed to leave the apartment, then you've already aquired what you need from it. Still you should be able to return...

Superb game. I only played the demo (I think) on my Amiga back in the days, and have been looking for this one for quite a while.

Anyway, after you enter the computer in Ryan's apartment, how do you quit it? I mean, I can 'list' and 'read' stuff, but I can't turn the damned thing off.

Use the keypad next to the door and type Eden's number (2865).

Hi! I am spanish, and I have the spanish CD version of the game. I bought it a few years ago, when I was 14 or so... I must say that this is one of my all-time favourite games. I could only find and buy the budget version of the game, in a White Label collection. Now I am 22, and can't forget this great game. Its brilliant in every aspect, the atmosphere is superb (only seen a similar atmosphere in Fallout and DeusEx1), the rain and its sound..... incredible. The story and the people in the game... really good... Since then, I really hope that someone makes a sequel or a remake of the original game...

PD: Thanks for the diary of a madman!!!!!!! Its superb!!!! It adds more atmosphere to the game. I couldn't never read it since the budget version didn't have it...

Sorry for my english!! :ok: :bye: :D

bitter_enigma 22-02-2006 11:24 AM

Awesome. Make sure you read the diary before you play. Atmosphere in spades. For me, games like privateer, fallout and lucasarts (almost any game) can match this for atmosphere.

Make sure you use the axe first. Then :guns:

You'll know when :ok:

The Fifth Horseman 09-06-2006 03:47 PM

Check www.mirsoft.info , both the MID and MOD sections - they might have the music already ripped.

Actually, I ripped and encoded (not the best quality, mind you) all the music and made it into an 'unofficial soundtrack CD' myself! I sent the MP3s to Abandonia a few days ago for the Music section here, so if they put it up, maybe that will help folks?

But if you want to do it yourself, here's what I did (keep in mind, this was several years ago, so I might have forgotten something!)...

On the Dreamweb CD-ROM (n the root directory), there are eighteen files called DREAMWEB.V** (starting at DREAMWEB.V01 and ending DREAMWEB.V99 but missing LOTS of 'numbers' in between). These are actually the non-speech sounds for the whole game; that is, music and sound effects!

Now, each file typically contains several sound effects/music track, and because the music is actually mostly VERY short pieces looped, they're mixed in with the effects (eg. DREAMWEB.V05 contains a bell ringing, then a door effect, then a container opening, then a music track, then more effects like the laser pistol, Dreamweb teleport, computer beeps, etc. all one after the other). So, to rip the music, you'd have to open the file, then find the part you wanted (not as hard as it might sound, as there's usually about a dozen SFX/tracks per file, though a bit time consuming at first), and copy or crop them out to a new file and save it.

As for how to OPEN these files, I used Goldwave 4.26 (limited shareware, but more than functional enough to rip the tracks out). I don't know if other programs can open them too, but I just dragged the DREAMWEB.V** file into Goldwave and opened it (when asked, because it can't be identified) as:

Format: PCM
Attributes: 8 bit, mono, unsigned (this seemed to work best, though other settings could be better)
Rate: 22050 Hz

And hey, presto... you've got a waveform that plays back at the right speed (the only problem being, it's a bit 'hissy', though you could use noise reduction tools in Goldwave and other progs to fix this).

The files save as SND or RAW files (suggesting they are really just re-named files of this type in the first place!).

Once you have the music in it's own files, then you can convert 'em to MP3s or whatever you want!

Oh, and incidentally... if you want to rip/hear the speech files from the game, on the CD there's a directory called 'SPEECH', and in that are tons of *.RAW files; these contain all the dialogue from the game.

Hope this helps some folks!

Cheers,
Banjo

I have to say, this is one of my all time fave adventure games, so overlooked sadly, I'm glad to see you guys all love it too.

I have the English CD talkie version which I bought way back when the game was released, think I'll play through it again after seeing it on here ;)

Heinz 21-06-2006 11:02 PM

I have to add to what everyone else has said, I just replayed this game after never having forgotten playing it the first time, which must have been over 10 years ago.

The story could have been developed a bit more possibly, but walking in the dark also adds to the atmosphere of the game, and what atmosphere there is. This game is simply brilliant in parts, I have always considered it to be one of the best. Ryan sometimes have to go through a share few obstacles to reach his goals, but if he'sgot the opportunity he isn't afraid to take the easy way out, the gun is used a few times throughout the game :max:

Amayirot Akago 22-06-2006 07:49 AM

Awesome, AWESOME game. Found the CD-Rom version in a budget bin at Toys R Us years back.

Hella atmospheric, hella bloody. My favourite scene was breaking into the singer's apartment and killing the bodyguards. Chop! Bam! :titan:

I would second that, I would REALLY love to get my hands on the CD ISO of the game. Just finished it again yesterday after many many years playing it. I just love it! Maybe someone should make a sequel for it... *erhm*!

i got the cd version from the www.ancientabandonware.co.uk but cant get it to work with dosbox it keeps telling
me "file not found.c" anyone know what the problem is :wallbash:

Damn, i'm stuck. I just came from the dreamweb after killing the man in the tv show. Now I need to kill sartain. For this I need to read Edens diary which should be on her bed. But there is none. Is this a bug?
She is lying in the bath and says to me I should sleep a bit...

WilliamC23 20-09-2006 05:49 AM

I discovered something interesting on a website, this game had a seperate soundtrack released for it: PC gameScore It would be cool if someone could track it down. Also I have discovered the MOD tracks from Amiga version, I would like to upload them to here. I'll give them to Kostas.

WilliamC23 21-09-2006 07:59 AM

St. Septimus is the Saint of 7 Deacon Martyrs, so it is the church of the 7 people that were a threat to the Dreamweb. 7 Sleepers of Ephesus referenced to in the diary.

Guest 11-10-2006 03:58 PM

AnimeGuy, I got stuck in the game trying to find the location of O'Rourke's hiding place. I had to use a walkthrough, which I hate doing, and it told me to insert the cartridge I found at Chapel's house and logon as BECKETT, with SEPTIMUS as the password. My question is, how in the heck were we ever supposed to figure that out?

It was originally more obvious in the Diary of a Madman, but yeah, it is pretty difficult to find out, I had problems finding it too.

Jasonw 18-10-2006 01:01 AM

This is great. I played this game 10 years ago and it's always bugged me because I never finished it.

My friend who owned it moved away and took his copy with him. A few years ago I picked up the CD version of the game and was thrilled. It came with the diary and everything. Problem was I couldn't get it to play on my XP computer.

I'm not very computer savy but I was able to get it to finally play but the sound was all choppy. There was no way I was gonna play the game like that or without sound. The music is a huge part of the atmosphere!

I just downloaded dosbox and the game from this site. I've followed the dosbox tutorial which was great by the way. And I got the game to work with sound.

My only question is does the downloaded version here have spoken dialogue? I'm not hearing it and I really want that part of the experience too. I know I'm being picky.

I do have the CD version myself. Can I put this on my C drive and then use dosbox with it and then the dialogue will work?

Jasonw 18-10-2006 01:24 AM

OK I just used dosbox with my CD. The music and dialogue are both working now!

2 quick questions. Does the downloaded version on this site have the dialogue?

Secondly, the dialogue I have working on the CD causes the background music to get a little static(y) (I know that's not a word) Can I improve my sound? Or is this what the game is supposed to sound like?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The Fifth Horseman 18-10-2006 11:52 AM

Try making an ISO (or BIN) image of your CD and then mount that image in DosBox using IMGMOUNT. This helped me a few times when I had this sort of issues.

jasonw 21-10-2006 12:42 PM

Thanks I'll do that.

Any suggestion as to what software I should use to create the ISO? Is there good free stuff out there?

I've never done this.

The Fifth Horseman 23-10-2006 03:14 PM

There is a bunch of programs for that, though not sure which ones are freeware and which are not. ;)

adfan 12-11-2006 01:54 AM

i never expected this game's forum thread to be alive!
ok quick request, can someone upload an iso of the full speech pc version using a website or torrent?
i know this isn't legal but i cant find a version to buy anywhere i thought i'd give it a shot

The Fifth Horseman 13-11-2006 12:39 PM

Actually, as the game is Abandonware, I see no problem with anyone doing just that.

In fact, someone just did that in another part of the forums.

The link is here.

I know it's been said many a time already, but it's just a marvellous game! I played it to the end two or three times and used saved games to replay some episodes, esp. the ending tens of times. I can not
recall another game that has such a strong atmosphere, the atmosphere of depression, madness, loneliness, mystics, violence and... doom. The game is not perfect and it's somewhat short, though
one doesn't usually notice that when playing for the first time, but it is partly to that incompleteness that we begin to imagine how one could extend the plot and the game's world doesn't come out of your mind. Were it a full and complete story in every way and it wouldn't be that great. That often is the case with good games or movies. For example, I've seen an anime lately, called Battle Angel Alita, it also it very short and the plot is developing at a fast pace just like in DreamWeb, and it was wonderful. So the point I'm trying to make is pretty simple: when you've had not enough of smth, you keep thinking of it,
you want it so very much, you love it. And it is especially addictive for those of us who would like to be in the main character's place. As for the tech part, there are a few bugs (as mentioned somewhere above) when you get stuck if you don't get some item in time - the crystal from the dreamweb is a fine
example, once you left without it, you can't go back (but i think you can get killed w/o it, so there's still an ending), but AFAIR there are some issues when you just can't do anything (I think I've also had that
bug with Eden's diary). Pity I found the Diary of a Madman and read it only after I'd finished the game twice. Excellent game, an unfogettable experience!

p.s. thanks for the link about the Seven Sleepers!

OT: Maybe, but it so happens that the anime includes only the volume 1 and 2 of the original manga... which has 9 in total... and all at quite similarily fast pace.

K4T 15-12-2006 10:49 PM

Yeap. I`m from Poland and i love Dreamweb too. Dreamweb is fuc***g AWESOME! I was playing in this game long time ago on my amiga 600 (later on PC). Now I want create remake of this game. So I started writing it in turbo pascal (13h mode). Maybe when I finish it (with god help :D) I make a sequel or smthing like this.

Here, some screamshots:
01: http://img88.imageshack.us/my.php?im...mweb000ud3.png
02: http://img428.imageshack.us/my.php?i...mweb001to1.png
03: http://img68.imageshack.us/my.php?im...mweb002li3.png

Anybody knows, how I can extract graphics from the game files? Now I`m using print screen and photoshop but it`s very slow method.

Nightkin 16-12-2006 08:34 AM

Why remaking the game if the original is still that great? I can't image, that you will be able the martch the games atmosphere and style.

@ sequel
Just use the boardsearch, a few years ago there was someone here, who wanted to make on. Maybe you can work together

K4T 16-12-2006 10:36 AM

I`m making remake first, because I still learn how to write games. If I menage to create a remake then I'll be also able to create a sequel without any problems. Making remake it`s some kind of test for me in my programming skills.

I know that somenody is making dreamweb 2, but we can't do it together because he's making it in rpg maker. I dont use any editor (like rpg maker), I'm writing whole code by myself (from 0 to hero :D).

Guest 20-12-2006 11:41 PM

good luck K4T , dreamweb is one of my fav. games i would love to try out your version when you finished it

Carcaroth 21-12-2006 01:40 AM

Cyberpunk games are already cool, and if they are cool cyberpunk games, like this one, it's a dream coming true.

K4T 21-12-2006 10:11 AM

Now I`m working on "walking engine". Detecting colisions etc.

WilliamC23 28-12-2006 07:00 AM

I have copied and compressed my CD version of the game, but it's unfortunately considerably bigger then the standard one. I'll upload this some place if someone can give me a good file hosting service or something. I'll probably put it up when I get back to my apartment, my connect isn't too good here.

Tonic 20-02-2007 05:09 PM

Hi can you guys tell me how to run this game.

The Fifth Horseman 21-02-2007 01:06 PM

Use DosBox or VDMSound to run the game. Whichever works better on your system.
You can get VDMSound from our programs page, and most recent version of DosBox can be downloaded here.

Chappers 18-03-2007 06:19 AM

loved the game when i was a kid, and now im trying to run it on DOSbox and the error is that a file is not found. is there something i should do after i d\load it?
any help would be appreciated.

ok now it says that i have to remove write-protection of some files do i need to do this in DOSbox of Vista and how?

The Fifth Horseman 19-03-2007 03:38 PM

Open the game directory.
Select all files and right-click on one of the selected files.
Select [PROPERTIES] from the menu.
There you can change the read-only attribute.

MadBeastMike 05-04-2007 02:30 AM

Yeah, why remake a game if the original's so great?
If I were learning to program, rather than make a remake, maybe make a special edition or even a sequel starring ryan's son or something (say he got eden pregnant at the end of the first one)

DL4002 24-09-2007 10:23 AM

I love this game and have played it so many times over the years. I remember reading a page of the Diary that was published in an amiga magazine back before the game was released. Sadly I never got the game for the amiga, but luckily enough I found it years later for the PC.

The atmosphere in this game is incredible, only down side is that the game is way to short and can be done in under an hour.
Still there are very few games that feel like this one, i love bleak futuristic style games.

Well anyway hope this isnt against the rules but I started doing a Video Playthru of this game on my site, which can be access here http://www.dl4002.co.uk/dw/ I tried to make the site look like the Dreamweb interface LOL
so if anyone fancy's watching me playthru this game you can do it there.

I finally sat down and finished this one, I've actually wanted to ever since I read the review in an old 1994 PC Gamer (this mag also had a review of System Shock, man I wish I'd kept it).

Anyway, what a great atmospheric and different adventure. The gore and themes would have been quite shocking back then, when everyone was kicking up a stink about such games as Mortal Kombat. The soundtrack is awesome. A few puzzles could have been easier to solve. I found the Diary of a Madman and manual on another site.

Voice Acting Version!!!

Hey guys! I found the voice acting cd version in my brother's room.
Would it be a good idea to put it on here, or do we just have to stick with the silent version?

red_avatar 31-03-2009 03:54 AM

The CD version is already available in the ISO Cellar which is only accessible to members. Please do not post any links here.

Sorry. I'm still pretty new here, only been about 4 weeks...

But I heard there was 3 versions. The floppy, the CD, and the voice acting that was on a CD. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I get this from people I knew in real life, not on the internet.

Luchsen 01-04-2009 11:11 AM

There are two versions, floppy and CD, which are the same except for the voice acting and a bonus audio track included in the latter.

markno2 11-08-2009 10:39 AM

This game is way better than the Matrix. The atmosphere is awesome, the story is gripping, the violence is wonderful.

Recorded some of the game with Dosbox and uploaded it at Gametrailers.
Go and check it out! :)

alexab 22-11-2009 12:47 AM

I just finished playing this game, and I wish to say I am very disappointed. Like people have said, the game has great atmosphere and, differently from the review, I actually think the top down vision actually helps the game, giving it a claustrophobic vibe.

Still, the story it tries to tell seems to be butchered. I can't imagine that it is in the way the developers actually wanted to release. Instead, this seems to be an unfinished game, probably released like that for monetary reasons. Specially in face of the diary that comes with it. A goddamn shame it couldn't be finished properly.

Capo 23-11-2009 09:57 PM

How to use computers ? The only command that does something is LIST :weird:

dosraider 24-11-2009 12:17 AM

Commands you can use on the compys:

List
Login .........
Read ........

That's about it if I remember swell.

Saccade 24-11-2009 08:16 AM

That's quite an important note...
You need the computers to progress and the reports add to the story.

It's also a good idea to write down all the codes and stuff that you need, as it's a real pain in the arse to keep having to go back and check them when you forget...

to read Ryan's cartridges, you'd go:

Login Ryan
List
List News (whatever directory)
Read Headlines (whatever file)

Sometimes, you'll have to login as different people, on certain consoles, but the commands are always the same.

This game :rocks: Capo - you will like it!

Capo 24-11-2009 03:59 PM

Thanks, now is clear, also reading the diary helps a lot :)

DarthHelmet86 30-08-2011 09:06 AM

I have installed Dreamweb's cd version and keep getting an error, the screen fades too black then reports "File not found.c".

I have the ISO mounted in MagicDisk when dosbox starts it mounts like this,

mount c c:\oldgames
mount d f:\ -tcdrom

I installed from the mounted d drive and went to run the game but got that error. I tired with another ISO copy of the game and got the same error as well. Anyone got a clue on how to get around this?

Also it seems that it only installed two files, Dreamweb.exe and Install.dat.

Runs fine here, but an ISO isn't the right image format, it's a mixed CD.
Has one track02.cda track (52 MB) that can be played in a CD player.
Your image should be a BIN/CUE or other that supports audio tracks, ISO can't.
Or you could try to mount the ISO image directly in dosbox without MagicDisk, ya never know ....

DarthHelmet86 30-08-2011 11:16 AM

That didn't work either. Oh well I was only going to LP it and that would be without the voices anyway. Just wanted to play the game with them so I could kinda get an idea for some of the people. Not a big problem at all.

Capo 30-08-2011 07:22 PM

I played the Iso cellar version one year ago without problem, so i guess is not an iso problem.

So far I'm up to the "General Sterling" segment and I am literally salivating over this game

The atmosphere, the premise, the music, they're all so fantastic

It's a damn shame this game isn't more well known

negative_chill 11-05-2013 12:56 PM

Okay, so for some reason the game isn't letting me get past the barrier in the General Sterling level

I talked to the man, killed him, and accessed the control panel, but still nothing

Any advice?
