I thought I was late...
The best - and one of the few good games on SNES: SUPER METROID ! ! ! |
Personal favorite:
Bugs Bunny: Rabbit Rampage  |
ActRaiser is amongst the best in the SNES era, if you can get past the moronically difficult platforming sequences. Just make sure you're using a gamepad if you're playing via an emulator.
The best part of the game is the simulation mode where you construct an empire under your godly hands and stuff. It's pretty simple but entertaining. Other than that, the SNES is filled with more mediocrity than it's credited for, there's actually only a handful of games I'd consider worthy of playing on that system. You'd be good with something like Contra 3 if you're intro horizontal scrolling shooters, and games that are hard as piss. |
Contra is certainly not a hard game...
Mega man serie is also a must. Great game, and the story got way better in the X serie. Also don't miss out on Rock and Roll racing. Great racing game with incredible rock tunes in the background. I think it was on the SNES... |
Rather than bomb this thread with my usual list, I'll post just a few...
Actraiser II- While the first game got a lot of attention, this one was kind of pushed aside. It dropped the overhead Populous-like scenes, and expended on the action scenes. Great graphics, nice (but different) music, hard as nails difficulty, good gameplay, and you have to play it on the harder settings to get to see the ending. Castlevania: Dracula X- Some say it's a port of the famous PC Engine game, but it's not. It only shares a few gameplay aspects (save girls to get the best ending), and a sound track, with that game. The stages and bosses are all new. I think people just got pissed off because they were expecting a new game that played like Super Castlevania IV, and instead got one that looks and sounds great, while playing more like the first game on the NES. The only downside to the game is the cheap hits. They bounce you back, but you don't get a moment of invincibility to recover like so many other Castlevania games give you. Otherwise, this is another great entry to the series. Demon's Crest- Musically great, graphically gorgeous, challenging, lengthy without over doing it, and it has multiple endings. The different types of gargoyles you can become add exploratory elements, as they'll allow you to go back to previously cleared stages and reach new areas. One of the best games of its kind on the system. MegaMan X/X2/X3- A trilogy of games that started good, and got better as it progressed. It plays like you'd expect from MegaMan, but even if their gameplay isn't innovative, they're quality stuff nonetheless. R-Type III: The Third Lightning- A shmup that looks good, sounds good, plays good, and isn't a cakewalk. It's six levels long, and it will kick your ass regularly. A quality entry to the long running series. Note: Stay far, far away from the GBA version. Super Castlevania IV- A remake of the first game basically. Nice graphics, good music, a controllable whip, and some (for the time) interesting effects. The only downside is that it's really pretty easy. Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts- Hard as your nipples in sub-zero weather, this game is brutal, but worth the bruises. Good music, very nice graphics, tough stages, and controls that are on the money (so you can't blame them). Be warned though... you have to play through twice to get the real ending. Super Mario All-Stars- Remakes of 1, 2 and 3, as well as the so-called 'Lost Levels'. The graphics now look more like Super Mario World in all of them, but they still play the same. The music even got touched up as well. Super Metroid- It's like Metroid, only bigger, and better on every level. If you own an SNES, you have to own this game. I'm pretty sure it's a law in a few states. Super Turrican 1 + 2- The classic (and dead?) run 'n gun platforming series came to the SNES with great results. The same quality levels of action, platforming, tunes, challenge, and graphics that made the Amiga games so much fun, are all here. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time- Good tunes, lots of levels, and nice graphics are all here in this hack 'n slash game. But, it's painfully easy, even on Hard. Still, it's very cheap these days, and worth getting. There are a few of my choices. |

as for the original topic, try Star ocean if you can. It's from the resulting offshoot from the ToP development team (Tri-ace) that went on to make Valkyrie profile amongst other things. It's well worth a play :D Also try "BS Zelda no Densetsu Remix", "Seiken Densetsu III" (Sequel to secret of mana) and "BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2". and yes, Zelda no densetsu is the original jap name for The legend of zelda (the first NES game) |
Thanks all, a nice list of games to try out :)
and yes I am a bit late as I presumed that the snes emulators would be like the Playstations where u needed extra stuff to get them to work |

Definetly Star Ocean, In my opinion it is one of the best snes game ever, maybe even the best
|
I can only assume the "Zelda no densetu" one was referring to one of the Secret of Mana style games only released in japan, Seiken Densetu 3, which I did manage to play ages ago when I found a translated version.
Was pretty good though, especially as your choice of main character gave you quite different storylines, as well as interacting with the characters you dont pick... |
For sure, Seiken Densetu 3 is one of my fav Jap only RPG for the snes that I truly enjoyed, along with Bahamut Lagoon which was another stellar title, a shame they still have never been released officially in North America, maybe just maybe they might make it to the Virtual Console though, that would be totally awesome.

One game I would recommend also, that is if you like Beat'Em'Up Super Streetfighter type of games, is ClayFighter. Was great on SNES, was great on Nintendo 64 too. It isn't as serious as Mortal Kombat or similar, instead it's all about humor. It has great graphics, nice character animations and funny, interesting fighters to choose from.
Definitely worth a try, even if you aren't much into arcade fighting games. |

There's too many!
- Smash TV - Robotron gameplay with delightfully campy "Running Man" plot. One of my favorite multiplayer arcade co-op games. - Shadowrun - Cyberpunk action RPG! - Mario Paint - The music composer is still pretty fun. - Sparkster - Cool platformer. - Robotrek - Light-hearted little RPG from the weirdos over at Enix, back when they were allowed to make quirky games and not just the same trite epic anime fantasy blahfest that's making them rich now.... Sorry, still a bit bitter about that one... - King of the Monsters - I haven't played this one in a while, so my reccomendation may be tainted by nostalgia. Basically a kaiju fighting game. Destroy cities as you fight other giant monsters. Every dream I've ever had. - Star Fox - Only bad people don't like this game. - E.V.O. The Search for Eden - Another quirky Enix game. You play as a small fish that slowly evolves in any way you choose. Eventually you can evolve into sophisticated land mammals or you can choose not to evolve and just be a crazy flying dinosaur well into an era where crazy flying dinosaurs shouldn't exist. A very original game... kind of a platformer with RPG elements. Also provides indisputable proof of evolution. - Micro Machines - I know it sounds lame, but this was a great casual multiplayer racing game. - NBA Jam - Gotta love it! BOOM SHAKALAKA! Nowadays they've got the "EA Big" series of over-the-top sports games, but not one of them yet has been as fun as NBA Jam. I believe you could play as Bill Clinton too if you entered "ARK" as your initials. (Might have to double check about that one.) They made a sequel called NBA Hangtime which was also very good and had more features like Create-A-Player and things like that but I only played the N64 version of it so I don't know if the SNES one was as good. - Out of this World - I'm sure you all know this one by now. - Shaq Fu - Just kidding. Don't get this. |
My favorites:
Chrono Trigger Earthbound Final Fantasy 3 Starfox Probably in that order. |
Dragon : The Bruce Lee Story.
Just get it now. |
One that surprised me...
Metal Marines - a fun strategy game that is sort of RTS, sort of turn based. You battle an opponent across various islands with missles and dropped in metal marine robots. You can build and upgrade various structures like SAM counter missles and bunkers. |
Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, 3 !
|
I am a bit of a JRPG *****, so try Tales of Phantasy, Star Ocean, Final Fantasy 2/4, 5, 3/6. The Zelda game is also a lot of fun and as stated above Secret of Mana 1 & 2 (2 is called Seiken Densetsu 3).
|
Some nice SNES games that are not already mentioned in this topic:
Axelay Earthworm Jim Ninja Warriors Again Nosferatu Super Adventure Island Tactics Ogre Wolfchild |
Top Gear
Mickey Mania Demon's Crest Goof Troop Wild Guns |
Thanks, I have 'found ' 750 snes games and am currently working my way through to see what is decent although it is a bit disapointing as many of them are fairly lousy but diddy kong and a few others have been fun.

anyone said Breath of Fire yet? if no thats a good RPG serie to try out.
|
I can't believe nobody's mentioned Terranigma yet. Great gameplay and fairly deep story (for an SNES game anyway). Soulblazer and Secret of Gaia are quite good as well.
|
Clay Mates FTW
|
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals is my favorite game of all time. It's a prequel, so you can play it before the first one and then continue the story with the first. I think it works better that way. The first one is kinda quirky and cartoony RPG fare, but the second one just blows it out of the water with an epic storyline, dozens of awesome characters, the best SNES graphics I've ever seen, and massive amounts of cool puzzles that still make me scratch my head (some are impossible to remember exactly how to beat them, and the game is just so huge.)
Get it now, get it now... get it now. Any used game store will have it as long as they stock SNES games. |
You should be ashamed.
You all forgot the best SNES game ever. Wild Guns. It's like Cabal. On steroids. It's set in the Wild West, only there are things like giant robots and tanks in it. It's an incredibly fun game for two players with craploads of things to blow up. |
If these haven't been suggested already:
- Breath of Fire I and II, above average jRPGs with decent story, a day/night system which actually affects the world and an interesting town-building system - Live a Live, weird title aside, it's probably one of the greatest jRPGs to ever grace the SNES. You basically have to live seven-eight lives in different time periods (from Stone Age to future), lots of variety in the gameplay, tons of secrets and sidequests (one of the chapters can be played in at least three different ways) and a good story - Shin Megami Tensei I and II, I can't recommend these games enough. Wonderful, wonderful RPGs (amateur english translations available). - Romancing SaGa 3, one of the few really nonlinear RPGs where you choices actually matter. Tons of sidequests, a good skill system, some great side activities (like the one where you get to be the ruler of a city, if I'm not mistaking). Romancing SaGa 2 is even better, too bad it's not translated. - Mad Max Returns, doubtlessly the most open-ended SNES rpg I've ever played. You can do anything from hunting outlaws to furnishing your own house. - Terranigma, great storyline, becomes very nonlinear once you get past the mediocre beginning. |
Crap! Someone's already mentioned Shadowrun! :( Anyhoo, that's a BIG recommendation. It's my favourite game of all time at the moment, too. Lots of depth, interesting characters and very engaging. A must! Also, give these a try:
Gradius 3 Plok Earthbound (not cheap on ebay - trust me, I've looked!) Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars (see above) Mystic Quest: Legend Vortex (not a million miles from Starwing; an overlooked little gem) ISS Deluxe (best soccer game EVER!!!) And you know all the rest: Super Mario World/All-Stars/Kart, Super Metriod, Zelda: A Link To The Past, yadda yadda...... Clayfighter 64 GOOD?!?!?!?!? What frickin' game were you playing?! :weird: |
The first one was for the SNES. It was way better than 64. There's also a tournament edition that's way better, and fixes a really big glitch (Blob's buzzsaw move).
Adventures of Batman and Robin is pretty fun if you liked the show. |
I recommend maybe lesser-known SNES game Demon's Crest.
