velik_m 10-12-2006 10:10 AM

Blood 2?

Reup 10-12-2006 10:15 AM

Well, Doom does have a grim atmosphere, as does Quake... not horror, but certainly thrillerish :) Too bad they're both un-abandoned :(

FISHCHAIR 10-12-2006 11:47 AM

Doom UN-Abandoned? your joking right??

The 3D Shooterlegends website has a whole section dedicated to those games. :)

Also, check out http://files.filefront.com/GZDoom_Blood_st...;/fileinfo.html for a standalone doom mod, mimicking the Blood Horror FPS. :)

Please don't make generic requests like that. Ask for specific games or none at all.

If you are looking for reccomendations, then this thread belongs to Favorite Oldies / Newbies and that is where I am going to move it.

proba222 13-12-2006 06:59 PM

Ill keep that in mind next time :kosta:

Carcaroth 14-12-2006 12:54 AM

It is too young to be considered abandonware but Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth is the greatest Horror FPS that I have ever seen. It has a great scary atmosphere, that lies between horror movies and HP Lovecraft. Great great great.

chainsoar 14-12-2006 01:45 AM

It's not abandonware but if you want a scary fps, buy Half Life 2. That has some pretty hair-raising moments. Also Return To Castle Wolfenstein might scare some people a bit. Most of the really good horror themed ones I can think of have already been mentioned in other posts - Blood, Doom, Quake etc.

CorruptMylar 14-12-2006 07:48 PM

I would think System Shock 1 would be a good Abandonia canidate.

I still remember when Shodan would tell me what she had in store for me if I was caught. Even now, the hair on the back of my neck stands up when I think about it.

Hmm, an interesting topic, though I do believe that we're missing F.E.A.R. in the mentioned games. It's quite fun...and absolutely terrifying...

I didn't find F.E.A.R. that special. Sure, the scripted bits are 'nice', but the gameplay is pretty borin, being in office buildings all the time...

I agree. FEAR is very overrated and pretty hyped in my opinion.

But I'm sure it fits under the "horror-shooter" genre anyway.

Oh yeah, Escape From Butcher's Bay is great fun! I only played the first half of that game but it was so cool. I hate having to return rented games.

you're welcome.

It's on HOTU too, torrent link even.

Don't know how the powers will like posting that link.

catchaserguns 27-12-2006 02:31 AM

If the original Blood is protected wouldn't Blood 2 be protected also?

The Fifth Horseman 27-12-2006 09:56 AM

Blood 2: The Chosen is under active ESA protection for AT LEAST 2013. Posting any download links, torrents etc for it is warez and therefore against the rules.

Spike Bebop 03-01-2007 07:46 PM

Velik, why in Monolith's good name did you have to post that? Now maybe the ESA men in black trenchcoats'll seize the underdogs and it'll be lost.

That aside, I've seen some FPS titles, but I haven't seen Doom. What's wrong with Doom? Wasn't Doom scary? Of course, Blood was also scary, but I couldn't get really scared while playing a game of Zombie Head Football ^_^ .

And by the way, am I the only one who believes that Doom 2 is shite?

PS: This is my first post, so a big hello to you all.

pr0ners 05-01-2007 10:43 AM

Realms of the Haunting. A true underdog. Probably hard to get hold of though. Which is unfortunate.

Carcaroth 05-01-2007 07:14 PM

Doom kicks behind. And yes, Spike Bebop, you are the only one who believes that Doom 2 is shite. It is awesome. And I think Blood is a bit overrated too.

Cosmonaut_Roger 05-01-2007 08:56 PM

Well I'm not claiming that these are good games, but I found them mildly amusing and they are defintetly Horror Themed FPS games:

Chasm: The Rift http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/chasm-the-rift
This game was released around the time of Quake, so it was one of the first 3d FPS games on the market. It had 3d enemies but 2d backgrounds, so it was kind of awkward. It was also one of the first FPS games to feature hit detection where you could blast off limbs and heads. Despite this, it was full of bugs and pretty generic.

Requiem Avenging Angel http://www.mobygames.com/game/window...avenging-angel
I really really liked this game. You play an angel sent to battle human populations that have been possesed by evil angels on the rampage and you also battle these evil angels. You possess both angelic powers and normal FPS weapons. And let me tell you, the angelic powers are brilliant. They range from healing yourself to turning enemies into pillars of salt to resurrecting fallen enemies to fight alongside you. This, IMO, is the most fun power in the entire game. I loved mowing down hordes of enemies, and then resurrecting them to have a veritable army of minions to go through the level with. I routinely had battles of 10 of my minions vs 10 other bad guys. It was fun to just duck out of the room and listen to the carnage and then go in and see who won after the noise stops. Awsome game.

The Thing http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/thing
While not an FPS, its close. Its basically a third person or first person action game based on the movie The Thing. You can't get much more horor than that.

The Ghost-Mansion is still haunting me :omg2:

But beside that it wasn't THAT scary.

F.E.A.R. is probably the scariest shooter I ever played. I mean, I always hated ventilation shafts (damn you, Half-Life), but this was just cruel xD

Oh, and F.E.A.R taught me a new...fear...for ladders.

Damn that girl xD

The Fifth Horseman 08-01-2007 11:25 AM

The haunted hotel I admit was scary - but not that much scary as some parts later in the game. Remember looking for Nosferatu warrens?

How were the bugs in that game? The only reason I never bought Bloodlines was due to the outcry that the game was filled with horrible bugs that could even be game stopping at times. Did they ever get resolved through official or fan patches? That game looked so cool, but all the reviews just seemed to focus on the bugs.

There was a inofficial fan-patch, that resolved some bugs, but yes, besides that it IS pretty buggy, and we'll probably never see a patch, because Troica (if that were their name) was gone shortly after the release. Also, the loading times can sometimes seem a bit long (depending on your computer).

Besides that however, it's an incredible awesome game. In my opinion, that is.

The Fifth Horseman 10-01-2007 10:00 AM

It's fairly resource-heavy. The patches apparently do help a bit, though.

Bugs are just bugs, meh. What matters is the game - and THAT totally rocks!

mglsharkson 12-01-2007 02:38 AM

My favs -

Undying - great all over!

Quake I - love that devil stuff!

Doom I / 2 - same - got to have a sense of humour!

Doom 3 - late at night had to stop playing at times, too intensive! Lot of monsters jumping out at you.

HL 1 & 2 - 2 was WAY to short, 1 had GREAT story, surpises, zombies / aliens / scientist hybreds plus Barney ; ) - remember the goverment forces!

Half Life 1 - They Hunger (file planet free mod) the openning church, graveyard and catacombs, the music and lighting really got to me had to play with a light on!
" " - Hearts of Darkness - Vietnam meets zombies meets Cooplia! Zany and fun, free mod, not scary pure say but wacky and addicting. Nice movie tie in!

Alice - wierd and wacky, puzzles and jumping that I can handle at my age. Note the Load Save Delete screen (LSD), my buddy pointed it out., clever. A underdog in my book.

System shock 2 - never finish this game (hard drive crash), the respawning wore me down, had to use cheats at time because I miss something early on in the game, still I plan to finish this bad boy. Good to play late at night...

Silent Hill 2 - lot's of puzzles (thank god for walkthrus on the web!), those zombies out of the fog get to you. Another I got to finish... BTW check out the tie-in movie on DVD, love Pyramind head, similar but different storyline as the game, check out IMDB for the discussion on what he movie really is about...

Waiting for some horro / zombie mods for HL2 like HL one mention above - remakes, anybody??

The underdogs have the Legacy- realm of terror and Realms of the haunting (abandonware) runs fine under DOSBOX. Should take some time on this games for me to finish.

The Prisioner old BASIC game base (Apple 2, Atari 8 bit) base on the show not scary but plays head games on you - keyboard keys for moving change on you, forward says NORTH, etc. Different puzzles including one that threatens to reformat your hard drive at one point by not giving up the answer and you got to cheat to finish the game! Never seen a game like that. Off topic I know....

Anyway enough for now

Maybe not a FPS but a third person shooter adventure, action horror game called Shadow Man. It seems not many people know of the game unfortunately but GameSpot seems to still have a good community of players. Made back in 1999 it's not abandonware (not like it will ever be at 700+MB) but still sold at CDAccess. Also it's requirements are low and it works on XP (even in Win95). I reckon it's one of my favourite games with a great story line, graphics and sound effects. Pretty weird that it comes on N64 considering it is mature for "violence, gore, profanity, implied sexual situations and psychological scares."
Freaky music too  It even has Jack the Ripper starring in it!

mglsharkson 14-01-2007 03:10 PM

Going to hunt down Shadow Man - thanks for the tip! From playing the stipped down HOTU Realm of the Haunting I decided to buy used off E Bay - 4 cd's long! I still have Sanitarium & Phastamorgia (5 cds here!) to play.

Add The Sufferring to my list, finish it a few months ago. Not so svary but did enjoy flashbacks sequences and the crazy hybred monsters roaming the walls. Glad I read a walkthru and was able to access the prequel level (spoiler alert!) by stepping(!) on the bird - hearing the director talk about the game and why he cut this sequence. Also on the discs was a 30 min show on haunted prisons which I found of interest. I almost miss that too, found it by poking around on the disc!

For late night scaryness Doom 3 and HLone- they hunger still is top billing!!

The Fifth Horseman 15-01-2007 06:08 AM

Just a few days ago I installed a game called "Psychotoxic". Got it from a mag cover DVD, and honestly didn't expect much from it, especially with the incredibly boring first level.

Well, later it got better. Two of the levels I've gotten through so far are actually comparable with the scarier sequences in VTM Bloodlines... a recommendation by itself.

Morrin 18-01-2007 06:06 AM

VtM: Bloodlines fan patch is still living and newer versions being developed. Very good to have if you have VtM.

JJXB 20-01-2007 08:34 AM

the suffering. for the pure and simple way it screws with your head, no matter when your playing it (it's kinda scary when your trying to fight a gas spirit that you have to get into a furnace)

gufu1992 20-01-2007 04:02 PM

Psyhotoxic = bad game

mglsharkson 20-01-2007 05:53 PM

The Suffering - like the constant evil taunts and flashbacks! Some good boss fights. Be sure to check out the "haunted prison" video hidden away on the cd, I almost missed it. And the bonus "prequel" level when you finish the game - step on the bird!

Anybody know where the other endings are hiding on the web, I finish and got the "middle" ending. Don't like to go back and play the other versions (too much time) just to see the other endings.

Just bought the full 4cd set of "Realms of the Haunting" after playing the abonware rip and reading reviews rxing the cd's I decided to splurge.

I disagree.
Psychotoxic = good concept, faulty execution.
It has a few highlights, if you are persistent enough to keep playing it after the first level.

UnHoly 22-01-2007 08:41 PM

Try Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi. It's got a great gothic atmosphere, really spooky. And the music, it's truly one of the best soundtracks i heard in computer game. Sometimes the game scared me almost to death. If you like classic horror movies like Dracula etc. you will love this game. It has got some minor bugs in graphic and the engine, but when you got sucked you don't look at them.

Another nice title is Thief: The Dark Project. Maybe it's not a pure horror, but it has some scary levels like haunted cathedral.

mglsharkson 27-01-2007 12:37 AM

Painkiller had some nice "horror" levels with churchs, graveyards, critters etc.

Quake 1 had the same also. I like the mood much more then Quake 2, dark and full of mystery, even as a first person shooter. Very fun to play!

Those where the days....

M

Hunter Hunted 31-01-2007 06:44 PM

Clive Barker's Undying is quite good.

Oh and Resident Evil: Survivor for the PSOne is semi-decent. It's about a secret agent who develops amnesia as he investigates a zombie outbreak on Sheena Island. The UK version was compatible with a light gun, but this was not available for the US edition (probably because of school violence).

Tito 31-01-2007 10:02 PM

I have to agree to "Thief: The Dark Project". You are so vulnerable anytime an enemy spots you that you are in permanent tension (and also the scary levels as mentioned).

Also, "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" is great at building a scary atmosphere. The problem is that both games aren't exactly shooters.

Sentinel69 04-02-2007 11:28 AM

I never really liked games like Doom and similar engines because of a sort of nausea during gameplay ,but a game I liked was clive Barkers Undying...

HomerDOHSimpson 04-02-2007 06:50 PM

I only know AvP and Doom. Blood was never sold in Germany

mglsharkson 14-02-2007 10:28 PM

Just finish "realms of the haunting" - all 4 cd's! Good puzzle / horror game, just glad I found a walkthrough for it - those last set of puzzles in the green arch / flame circle room was tough!!! Anybody want to play I recommend getting the full game rather then playing the cd-rip abandonware version - the movie clips are worth watching!

Side question - where to post to sell old games beyond e-bay / amazon / half.com?

Now it is time to play "legacy - realm of terror", I just found the complete walkthrough online. I usually wait to get stuck before I check the walkthrough but this game looks tough all over with only one cheat available.

I still got to finish Silent Hill 2 another tough puzzle / horror game. Needed the darn walkthrough as well - maybe somebody is telling me something!

Anybody got other horror / puzzle games recommendations abandonware similar to games listed above?

Thanks!

No one is immune. I spend large chunks of my life deliberately seeking out the world's most disgustingly gory and terrifying movies and watching them, but there's nothing that compares to the immersive experience of a good scary video game. It's more like you're really there.

I almost crapped my heart out when I was playing Doom 3.

Blood-Pigggy 06-06-2007 12:31 AM

Doom 3 isn't scary at all, try playing the original Silent Hill (or number 2) late at night with headphones in a dark room.

Hell, that game managed to scare me when I was playing it with my people in the room right next to mine, in broad daylight while playing with my TV's crappy mono speakers, that's definitely scary.

Iowa 06-06-2007 01:33 AM

I don't understand Silent Hill. I've never played one of them, and i'm a bit confused as to what they actually are...are they puzzlers? Are they RE clones? Are they action games? Pretty much all I know at this point is that a lot of people say they're the scariest games.

Another game with fantastic horror elements is S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl...although I don't take kindly to the game's unbearable amount of realism.

They're 3rd person horror games, although the only thing I think they really share with RE are similar controls, it's not really survival horror, there's never a lack of ammo, and it's a combination of action and adventure.

Tito 06-06-2007 10:17 PM

Please, don't start a discussion about the concept of scaryness itself. Some people are scared by some things, and some are scared by others. As I said, Thief: The Dark Project scared me at some points, and also Sillent Hill, while playing it at my cousin's house scared me a bit at some points. But I also know of a friend of mine who got a little fright every time he shot the hand gun in Half Life with high volume in his loudspeakers. That is, every single time, knowing that the gun was going to make a loud noise, he was frighted.

So, as conclusion, Doom 3 can be scary, Silent Hill can be scary, Thief: The Dark Project can be scary. even some loudspeakers can be scary! People, be tolerant to everybodys else's kind of scaryness. :bleh:

Dave 06-06-2007 10:50 PM

Do someone remeber Return to Castle Wolfenstein?? This was scary! Damn, catacombs were full of those bastards zombies and in the last levels of those experimental monsters! :rifle:

STALKER can be scary if you don't have ammo and you have to escape from labs X16 or X18. :whops:

Pathologic. A survival horror FPS with RPG like elements where your enemy is an actual infectious contagion to which you are not immune.

Only bad thing is that the translation to english is rather sloppy.

Lord Zero 17-06-2007 10:11 PM

W00t!

Where can I find Realms of the Haunting? I loved that game. It was beyond impressive. I only played the demo, though, unfortunately.

Dave 17-06-2007 10:45 PM

Realms of the Haunting is a British adventure game released in 1997 by Gremlin [...] (Wikipedia)
Unfortunatly it's not abandonware so you can't find it on Abandonia.

Iowa 18-06-2007 10:23 PM

I remember hearing about a horror game (something to do with "Road to Fiddlers Green") for the Xbox, and I saw some gameplay footage of it on Cinematech. Does anyone know what i'm talking about, or if it's even a decent game?

Blood-Pigggy 18-06-2007 10:45 PM

It's Land Of The Dead: Road To Fiddler's Green.
It's based on the film, and no, it's an atrocious piece of crap.

Iowa 19-06-2007 01:00 AM

Alright...won't play it. ^_^

Blood-Pigggy 19-06-2007 01:46 AM

If you find it for $2 go ahead and buy it, it's worth experiencing something even if it sucks, just don't shell out more than budgetware cash.

It's more like "inheritor" that has the system shock spirit. It's not related to the "world" of system shock 2.

If you have an xbox 360, get either Condemmed (seriously scariest game I've ever played) or you can get fear (not as scary, but really fun).

Iowa 24-06-2007 11:18 PM

F.E.A.R. is wayyy better on PC...it blows the 360 and PS3 versions out of the water IMO. :whistling:

Dave 25-06-2007 08:55 AM

I think it's the same for all fps games...maybe it's the pad...with mouse is easier

Burger Meister 25-06-2007 04:21 PM

Meh, PCs = you need a lot of money to upgrade, then there is always performance issues. Sure I love pcs, but if I can use a console for gaming, I will. Since you pop in the disc and it works automatically.

Dave 25-06-2007 04:52 PM

Yes, but you have to admit that it's difficult to play Fps and impossible to play rts games...
but you're right when you say you are more "carefree" when you play consolles.

Burger Meister 26-06-2007 02:54 AM

I can't admit it's difficult to play FPS, because it isn't and it's not impossible to play rts games. Ever see C&C 3 or LOTR BFM 2 on xbox 360? They both work fine. Sure it's way easier to play with a mouse for rts games, it's still very fun to do it with a controller. I remember starcraft 64 (for n64 duh) and it had splitscreen co-op, competetive, etc... best game I've played on 64. They need those on more consoles.

I have a slightly higher than middle of the road comp, and it really sucks when I buy a game that should
work, and doesn't, or a newer game that I'm not sure if it'll run or not, and it works fine w/ no glitches.
Don't know if that's because of XP or not, but that's why I'm getting a 360 - for gaming.
As far as FPS horror games goes, I haven't played many. I really liked Silent Hill and Resident Evil franchises (?) but they could use a little re-vamping. One game I played, I think off this site, was based on some kind of D&D rules and you were trapped in a valley w/ a Master Vampire or whatever who controlled everything. Crappy graphics, but it was old, but it was a good game. I did have to use the walkthrough a couple times to figure out what to do though. The only FPS horror I can think of off the top of my head that I've played is Doom 3, and I only played a little of the expansion.

Some horror games I finish this year or close to it -

Realms of the Haunting - lot of fun, work fine on my XP, worth buying (anybody want to buy mine?) because of the cut scenes and story background. I needed the walk through on occasion to get past some roadblocks. The monster battles are a lot of fun.

The Thing - Just got this game, really like the fear and trust elements of the game. My team members can suddenly morph into the thing or freak out from fear and attack me or even "off" themselves! Too bad the replay value is low - I like to see more of this idea in FPS games.

Quake 4 - good game, -good graphics / story line / single player challenge, I need to get back and finish this game. Got stuck at the convoy ambush run.

Painkiller - just waves of critters shooting in a Gothic setting, like the boss battles with oversize monsters. Lotta mindless fun.

Doom 3 Hell on Earth add on - more mindless fun in the evil setting. Also played different mods and original Doom shareware redone with Doom 3 engine. That was a blast, bum it was too short! ID should redo Doom & Doom 2 with the laster engine and sell it! I would buy it!

Kiss Psycho Circus - Doom clone, bargain bin, unreal engine, needed to cheat a few times so many critters, like it!

Suffering - Fun and twisted, the game had a good story line and got better the more you played. When you are done check out the "easter egg" raven at the end of the game (which shows you the deleted beginning and why it was drop!). Needed the walk thru a few times, monster battles tough but not unreasonable. Had to watch on you tube alt. endings since I did not want to play thru again.

HL with Hearts of Evil mod - played this a LONG time ago, decided to try it again! It's just a lot of cheap fun!

oh, btw - I think both of those are for regular xbox as well, you just can't get the achievements <_<

Whee! Thread resurrection!

It's old, but not quite old enough to be undead. No shovel for it.

[/b]
Oh yes, I was going to talk about Nosferatu. Its an awesome game, and pretty creepy. The graphics arent that good, but the mood and atmosphere definitaly are.

And yes, it scared me too, a lot. Not only monsters spook you all the time, but your character is so weak that facing monsters is a really hard thing to do.

mglsharkson 29-09-2007 12:57 AM

I played the demo of FEAR - need to get the full version, crank the sounds, kill the lights and lock the door!
Guys - Which version to get? Cheap original, Directors cut (Gold DVD)? Or add on extraction point combo? Thoughts?

Resident Evil 2 Platinum - another bargain been, finally after many years I got use to the controls, fun, tough and
addicting, this this version I got access to BIG guns with unlimited ammo to make it past those tough sections!

Res Evil 4 - good graphics / sound, BAD controls! Why or why did they do a STRAIGHT PORT from Gamecube? I have both PC and Gamecube and now I have to buy a special pc "stick" just to work the inventory!!!!!! Otherwise UNABLE PC version! And I wanted to get any from Gamecube controls because I suck at them! Otherwise I like the game!

{My Res Evil for Gamecube stays unplayed because of getting use to those darn controls! I am left handed mouser, invert look and right handed keyboard for movement> get with it game makers!}

( I will say I do need to learn so I can finish Enteranal Darkness, that game was clever and unnerving)

AVP 2 was a great find in the bargain bin for me, all 3 missions single player plus online battles are a blast. If only they release code to build more maps (like Unreal) but alas the company is no more...
The sounds of the critters where well done as well as the cleverness of DIFFERENT critters for online battles still draws a crowd - THEY NEED TO UPDATE AND RE-RELEASE THIS GAME! Anybody else????

Other games that were tough to play late at night:

Doom 3 - jump out factor

HL mod - They Hunger (I had to leave the lights on for the first level of crypts : * Embarrassing!

MGL

PS - did Fatal Frame ever come out on the PC?
