Hi everyone!

Its been a while since the last contest, and both the page and community developed nicely since then. That is why I thought it would be only fair to organize another contest and with the richest prize pool so far!

There are five awesome prizes to be won!

Score board: [attachmentid=3809]

Okay just sent all 5 answers. One of those was pretty hard for me personally. Even if you know and have played all the games, it's still easy to not recognise it by the screenshots because it seems Kosta loves using screenshots of intros/animated sequences which most people will even skip ;)

thebes 30-09-2006 04:24 AM

Just one was hard for you? Ok I'm toast. :wallbash:

The whole idea is that you are supposed to twist your brain a little and use searching engines and game museums on the net. ;)

Where would the fun be if it was so easy that everyone could answer it in 3 seconds?

Everyone? Not everyone has played so many games. I know hundereds of games for PC (if not thousands) if I get to see in-game screenshots but an intro which you see for a split second or only if you play a game for quite a while is much much harder. I just think that the screenshots shouldn't be mostly intro or cut-scene shots. As you say, then it becomes a matter of who is the best googler or browser. And that defeats the point of a quiz.

Kosta 30-09-2006 10:32 AM

No worries, it just happens to be so in the first few "easy" sets. Later screens are all in-game ;)

Good :P I'd like my head not explode in trying to remember some cut-scene. It's a miracle I recognised the hard one.

#BlakhOle# 30-09-2006 12:43 PM

I'm not very good at this. Are all the pictures available on the internet to compare to the games? Obviously I'd have to look around to find them, but If I look will I find that actual picture? I don't get the chance to play many games; availability is a huge problem, closely followed by money with time nipping at its heels. I just don't have the resources at the moment to buy, download or research 50 different games. But that iPod looks maaaaighty fine  . So with this in mind, I'm going to try my best. So's I don't sound like a whiney kid. :) Whoops too late...

Playbahnosh 30-09-2006 07:05 PM

Thats great. I check in to see what is going on lately, and BANG! A contest is in progress... What's with you people? I go away for a while, and you start a contest while I'm gone... :P

And yes, mee too. I mean I only recognise 1 of the screens :(
I played many of the classic games, but earlier we didn't or more importantly we couldn't buy the original of the games. I only recieved rips of the original games, which dont have cutscenes, music or sound, just the game itself to spare disk space. This was more than 10 years ago though... The point is, even if I played most of the games back then, I saw no intros or cutscenes whatsoever. This makes it almost impossible to solve most of the screens here... :( I guess I don' really have a chance to win this contest :(

But I play anyway, for fun if nothing else :D

shanuea 30-09-2006 08:01 PM

Im pretty confident in my answers for all but the first one. I just had a wild guess at that one. Good competition though. Thanks kosta. But will the answers be posted on here at the very end or as each new set of screenshots are posted??

Eagle of Fire 30-09-2006 11:19 PM

Well, it doesn't bode well for me. I have no idea whatsoever from which games those screenshots may come from... If anything, I never played those games. And they are supposed to be the easy ones...

Remember that "easy" in this case is very biased. Kosta thinks these are easy, but what he considers difficult wil be considered laughably easy by someone else.

That's great and all, if you know what it is you're looking at to search for, and also where to search for.

EG: 1st picture: search for "army dude with explosion" I'm sure that'll return something useful. :D You really need to recognise these screen shots, so yea, it really is an answer in 3 seconds deal.

Looks like I'll just buy those sierra games.

EDIT: Is it possible to still be in the running if you can't guess any out of a block of 5, but can guess some in the next block, etc, and only have say, 30 out of 50 guesses submitted?

Damo 01-10-2006 01:31 AM

Hi folks.
Long time reader first time poster
I am not going to compete in this as I dont know any of the first five.
However I am a massive fan of Monkey Island, Discworld and the like, and the 4th picture looks of the same ilk.

If someone were to email me the game so I can try and get it I can promise I wont use it for this comp or give it to someone else.
Just really want to play it.
I only have the next couple of days off to play games so I can't actually wait for the comp to finish :)

Hope someone can help

Thanks in advance and great site!

Chromanin 01-10-2006 02:05 AM

If you like Monkey Island and Discworld and the like, you probably won't like the game in the 4th picture. The gameplay is just shrewd by comparison.

ReamusLQ 01-10-2006 02:18 AM

Remember all, hints result in disquualification if you read the rules...I pity you folks.

I however do have a question. In the rules it says "Whoever gets them all right wins!" I'm assuming if no one gets them all right, then the one with the most points wins, and so on?

Damo 01-10-2006 05:49 AM

Seriously, I really would like to know the game from picture 4.
There is noone else I can ask.
I am not competing, surely someone will help me?

Stop trying to get clues. If you were for real, you'd wait until the next 5 screenshots were posted.

Damo 01-10-2006 06:23 AM

I - am - not - competing.
What sort of sad wanker would sit here and ask for the answers and then turn around and compete.
Its the first time I am posting here because all I want is to play a old school adventure game I have not yet completed.

If you dont know or dont want to help me fine, but dont put of someone who might help me.
Tell me and I will go away.

Are you saying that the answer will be given to the first five when the second five are put up?
I didnt see that written anywhere.

Its just a little quiz there is no need to be so secretive for gods sake...

shanuea 01-10-2006 08:17 AM

Damo 01-10-2006 09:21 AM

Idiots

I will just wait I guess. Thanks for all your help.
BTW I got several PM's of people asking to find out as they want to play it as well.

s'if I want an i pod shuffle, I have 2 here at my desk. But I guess you guys wouldnt know if I am lying or not, so its best to distrust.

User has been warned

alvarious 01-10-2006 09:53 AM

Haha it's funny and sad at the same time, I know what the first one is... and I'm pretty sure the rest of the people that said I know only 1 are thinking of the same answer for the first one.

I'm not going to enter, not out of pride, I know I'll get whopped in that race for sure. I'll just game it up, give something back to the community that's given me so much.

P.S: Kosta, love the christmas take on Giger artwork you have for your avatar. Tres Classy

At first glance and to my personal despair I only recognized one of the game screenshots, because it was the only one of them that I've actually played before. But after like an hour of research on the internet I was able to figure out the other four games. So, as a matter of fact, it is possible to research the answers. Of course you need to use some logic and, as MV75 stated (but maybe in a sarcastic way, I think :D ), you must know where to look for (you can't use a search engine of course!). So, come on people! Give it a try. It may be like finding a needle in haystack, but who knows, you may get lucky like me! Three of those screenshots were from games I've never seen before in my entire life.

And this is exactly why people shouldn't tell you. You're a naive idiot who believes those people want to play it. I can garantee you that most are trying to get the answer from you and you'd willingly give it to them thinking they want to play it and not use it for the contest. WAIT FOR THE NEXT BADGE OF SCREENSHOTS. The first post says that you get points deducted for being late so that will make it at least a *bit* acceptable.

The correct answers, toghether with the list of how many points each participant scored will be posted at the end of the competition. The reason for this is because you CAN still send in answer after 48 hours have passed, only you will receive less points for the answers. :)

Well, Abandonia is a PC-DOS only site so we'll stick to those ;)

Tom Henrik 01-10-2006 03:18 PM

And I feel that I need to say something as well. Any more posts that are either flaming or trying "cleverly" to ask persons to tell them the names of the games will result in severe punishments.

The smallest punishment would be a complete suspension for as long as this competition is running.

I will not tolerate people ruining this competion for people who are being serious and trying to have fun.

Personally I find flight sims unfair because you really really need to have played them lots before you can know for sure because a lot of them look very similar. Especially when they show a screenshot from an external view and not a cockpit show. I just happen to know this one for a reason I can't tell you without giving too much away ;)

The amount of Flightsims in the same time span was amazing though back then - they all were small improvement over eachother so they can be very hard to identify.

I'm a decent game "researcher" myself as well :), although I really should get some underdoggers in here, as they completely blow me to bits when it comes to contests like this.

Ow and about the PM, I get your point, but it's not easy finding that out :w00t: .

red_avatar 01-10-2006 09:34 PM

Haha, well I should add that I've been testing DOS games for DOSBOX (I'm one of the beta testers) for quite some time and have been through hundereds of games - so far I tested over 800 DOS games on DOSBOX and all but one of the screenshots was among those. And that I've been re-reading old copies of games magazines since 1993 ;) that helps too. But yeah, obscure games could be a problem since those are often even hard to find for download, let alone be well known.

Damo 02-10-2006 02:34 AM

The only game I recognised in the first list was one that I know I've never played, but I knew what it was. :D Ah, the irony.

Sorta sucks that after playing games for the last two decades, I can't turn up squat on what's here.

Werner 02-10-2006 08:07 AM

Hi fellow gamers

Nice competition. it's difficult and yes sometime we do skip the irritating intro's etc. etc., but it's all about the competition. If you don't know it....then tuff luck, i also dont' know most of them. (tuff luck for me!)

... atleast submit answers to the screen shots and try your best. I tried, and i think i recognized 4 of the whole set 1 and 2 :wallbash:

It is difficult, but it all depends on score on how many you got right... so guess if you have to.... maybe you'll be lucky!

Good luck fellow gamers!

Werner

Ow and about the PM, I get your point, but it's not easy finding that out :w00t: .
@ Chromanin and red_avatar
If I get any more reasons to think that one or both of you are cheating, I will personally suspend you for the duration of this competition.
[/b][/quote]

I didn't tell him anything if you want to know. And if you wanted cheating, you should have gotten to Damo before because someone may already have sent him the answer anyway and maybe even passed it on to others. Don't have doubble standards.

Dam0 02-10-2006 10:46 AM

Its unfair that I get banned for cheating with no evidence.
Surely admins can check my mail history to see I didnt get nor give any answers.
I understand that it is not good to look for answers in the middle of a comp. But seeing that I did not wish to compete and that I had been told by Red thingo that after the 2nd five are up I could be told I thought it was ok.
I am sorry for anyone who thinks I am cheating. I am not, just after a good game.
I got some other good games in another thread so I am fairly happy.
I would still like to know this one, but I will wait.
I request that I be unbanned though, and that Red thingo try not to be such a stirrer.

Chromanin 02-10-2006 11:17 AM

Wee, just relax peeps, it's just a game! No need to fight over it!

Ow and Tom Henrik, if I really wanted to cheat I would've done it more subtle than announce it in this thread :D. Don't worry, this is just a game for me :), I don't have any hopes of winning and just want to test my gaming knowledge skills, no fun in cheating in a contest like this :). You can check Kosta's PM to see that I sent my answers before I PMmed Red_Avatar :).

I appoligize for the confusion :). I won't PM anyone about it from now on :3.

Dam0 02-10-2006 11:19 AM

Well its hard to relax when I cant access these forums from my PC.
I have to use the PC at my dads house.
That sucks, esp when I actually have dont nothing wrong.

Tom Henrik 02-10-2006 11:48 AM

Dam0, you should talk with Kosta (who banned you in the first place) and Titan (who warned you, and lifted your ban).

chainsoar 02-10-2006 02:03 PM

I recognised about 3 of them.

noid 02-10-2006 05:53 PM

Ohh, nice set this one :)

Took me quite some time to find 'em all!

Maybe you could continue the numbering, instead of restarting at 1? Less chance of mixing up sets that way.

besides this i was thinkin why not to close this topic to any new post except those ones from kosta with new screens - but now this idea i think is little late...

Grinder 03-10-2006 07:12 AM

I wish I could say that.

Horoma 03-10-2006 10:23 AM

I found the 2nd set to be a lot easier than the 1st. The 1st set I only knew 2 games, no idea whatsoever about the other 3. The 2nd set I only made a wild guess for the last one, pretty sure about the others.

OK, I'll do that... I was thinking of doing that from the start but I thought clearer separation of sets would be of importance so that people can see right away what has been added. :)

Well, I usually suck at remembering names of (old) games I've played, but in this case I remembered enough to find it pretty fast.

Now, back to trying to find out that first one.
I know I've seen it a number of times before, but I just can't remember where.
It's probably something blindingly obvious.

Duh!

Woah, the 14th game has been a tough one to find :hairpull:

Eagle of Fire 04-10-2006 03:40 AM

Hey, I know one of those! The number 8! :P

I have no idea whatsoever for any other tough. I am guessing that most of them come from adventure games, a genre that I hate and never play...

Poker Crow 04-10-2006 06:19 AM

I don't like the way the sets of pictures are being posted now. Don't you think it would be better to separate each set from another with a title, like you did with the first 2 sets, but mantaining the picture numbering you are using right now?

red_avatar 04-10-2006 05:57 PM

red_avatar 04-10-2006 07:25 PM

Well I like the fact that there's a time penalty. For one, 5 at a time gives you time to focus on 5 instead of overwhelming you and making you lose courage. But it also means that people would get a limited time to "research", thus awarding people who know most answers right away.

More like 5 minutes to get most of them and up to two hours trying to remember plots and bit's of the titles so one can double check the rest.

shanuea 05-10-2006 01:43 AM

A contest with only five minutes or so between sets would really reward the best gamer and not just people who have far too much time on their hands and spend fours hours plus searching for the game on the web.

:)

Other than that small rant, Im having fun playing this contest (though i probably wont win). Three cheers for Kosta!

Maybe with the harder ones later, but not with the ones posted so far. 2 hours is a looong time though for looking up a game. If you haven't found it by then ...

the time zone comment was towards the guy who said "they should be posted every five minutes; that would prove who the real gamer is" or something like that. Two day is more than enough time for me.

It should be ;) 2 days would be enough for all 50. At least for those that don't have to look up every second screenshot.

red_avatar 05-10-2006 08:07 PM

Damn, first time that a screenshot really has me stumped - I recognise it but can't place it. I'll have to go through my list of games to see if it rings a bell.

EDIT damn you Kosta :P Typical that it would be a cut-scene screenshot. I just recognise the style but can't figure out the game.

submitting after the 2 day period. => less points
incomple set. => no problem.

[/b]
The arrogance is because of your inability to read, it seems, not from me. If you try to quote me, at least make sure I ever actually said that, instead of just making it up. I spent two days trying hard to find the solution to nr 20 and I was honestly happy not having to do that again. Nothing to do with "easy" - it's been since the first few sets (which were easy) that I said that.

Tom Henrik 09-10-2006 03:50 AM

Okey, people try to relax a bit. Just because red_avatar claims some of the screens to be simple, doesn't mean he's gotten them all right. ;)

(I'm not a judge, so I don't know who has the most correct answers at the moment, only Kosta knows).

And red_avatar, just be a little more humble. In competitions it is more polite and appropriate to bang your head against a brick wall, while stating how difficult you find certain screens - as it boosts the moral of those that have managed to identify that game, than it is to claim that certain sets or screens were easy - as that decreases the morale of those who have difficulties with those.

Just remember that this is all for fun. :)

I'm not sure if it helps, but every screen belonging to set 7 is original.

All the screens are original. The only "modifications" were done if the actual game name was written on the screenshot, and that usually involved just erasing the name and nothing else.

Kosta 13-10-2006 06:31 PM

Set 8 is up! I had to post it a little sooner today but I will accept answers for set 7 without any deducted marks until 20:00 GMT, as usual! :)

drKarling 13-10-2006 09:27 PM

Stoopid cutscreens!
The rest was easy peasy tho.

Rorschach 14-10-2006 02:04 AM

Ooooh, I'm feeling mighty, this is the first set I'm able to get 2 right answers straight away... :P

Kosta 15-10-2006 07:02 PM

And just 5 to go ;)

drKarling 15-10-2006 07:10 PM

*groan*
I don't recognize even one of them.
Better start searching.

red_avatar 15-10-2006 08:37 PM

There's one of them that I almost know for sure is right, but I can't verify it because I don't find any place that has that screenshot and it would mean playing through the game to nearly the end.

Kosta 17-10-2006 07:15 PM

Sorry for being late with the last set! That's it, the results will be posted Thursday 19th after 20:00 GMT! :)

troop18546 18-10-2006 05:19 PM

Sorry to be so out of topic, but when the contest is over (heck, or now, cause I'm not entering or anything)I'd like to know what game is #39. I would like to try it out. Not entering, cause I know only 3 or 4 LOL. Which means - I played the more popular games in my childhood.

BTW, the last one is really unfair - what if people couldn't play till the end?

Tom Henrik 18-10-2006 07:24 PM

Not really. That particular type of graphic is really tell-tale and unique for the company that made that game. And once you have the company, there's not that many games that could've shown a castle :P

Yup, that graphic style is very recognizable and also there's a chance you can recognize that castle even if you never finished the game. As a matter of fact #50 was the only screenshot from the last set I could somewhat identify and I didn't even remember the ending... I finished that game sooooo many years ago.

ReamusLQ 19-10-2006 05:04 PM

number fifty was the only one I knew from that set. It's probably one of the most memorable and funnest games I played years back.

LoveBeer 19-10-2006 06:06 PM

Aw man, I made only about 65 out of a 104, guess I won't be contending for a runner up spot... :/

Well, it was fun anyway. ;)

Poker Crow 20-10-2006 04:46 AM

I have 2 questions for Kosta:
1) How many points are awarded for the answers submitted after the 2 day period?

2) Maybe I'm wrong, but are you sure that the screenshot #45 belongs to the game "Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday" and not to its sequel "Matrix Cubed"? I haven't found that exact screenshot anywhere, so I can't be completely sure about this, but as far as I know both games used the same graphic interface (or at least a very similar one) and could be easily confused. However, the posted screenshot has some text that describes that man wearing a ring with the letters P-U-R-G-E. I've searched thoroughly in reviews and walkthroughts for both games (there's only a few I must say) and the organization P.U.R.G.E. is part of the plot in "Matrix Cubed" and does not appear at all in "Countdown to Doomsday" (check HOTU). That's why I believe that game really is "Buck Rogers: Matrix Cubed".

Poker Crow 20-10-2006 04:58 AM

Ok, now I'm 100% sure... as a matter of fact, game #45 is "Buck Rogers: Matrix Cubed". I just downloaded it from HOTU to check whether the game interface was the same as in "Countdown to Doomsday" and yeah, it's the same.... but that's not all. Luckily the posted screenshot appears right away after starting the game! You should correct that answer.

Sorry if I caused any inconvenience to you Kosta.

red_avatar 20-10-2006 06:17 AM

Gah! I thought number 20 was Gateway II- I have that game but not on CD so it seems I never got to see that intro :S

SoulHunter 20-10-2006 08:50 AM

I think that there isn't CD version for GateWay 2, in fact, that cutscene shows up at the beginning of the game, when you left the building, at least in the version that can be downloaded here in abandonia.

Overseer 20-10-2006 09:12 AM

I'm really disapointed with my performance in this contest  Now I know that I really could find answers to all screens I didn't answer. And about one of the games... one of the easiest... my first impression was right, but I really couldn't confirm it, so I didn't send it :wallbash:

It is Matrix Cubed. I supplied Kosta with that screen, and also told him that it was Matrix Cubed at the time. This seems to have been a slip-up.

Haha, another 3 points to boost my far to low score.
Since I don't remember all my answers or when I answered them, I think I just might be nudging 70 points or something like that.

I didn't get SQ4 at first either - I first thought it was Rex Nebular but the graphical style didn't match yet I remembered that it was a comedy sci-fi game - it has been 10 years since I played SQ4 though. Voyeur I recognised right away though - bought that game years ago.

I'm thinking of making my own contest - but one that is slightly different :P I'd merge two games into one screenshot and make people guess both games. I wouldn't tell which parts would be off game 1 or game 2 of course ;) What do you think?

I count 6+5+9+8+6+10+2+6+6+9=67 (according to the scoreboard I have 12 points regarding SET 6 which gave max 11 points  ) for me, but that's not important and probably based on my PMing problems (e.g. I just saw that one PM came back - "This message was sent to Luchsen" ). Splendid choice of screenshots/games and an entertaining contest! Can't wait until the next one! :kosta:

It's why I asked Kosta from time to time if he got all my answers so far - to avoid running into surprises at the end when turns out he didn't get a set.

I'll start working on the contest tonight but I'll leave some time before posting it :). I still have to find some cool prizes to give away - I have lots of older games and even some rarer ones twice (like System Shock). I doubt there will be an ipod though ;-)

I _KNEW_ it! I sent a PM in response to sets 8, 9, and 10 and the stupid message board ATE IT!!! I was suspicious when I didn't see it in my 'sent' folder, but I didn't want to send it multiple times! That's at least THREE points I would have had!

Correction, FIVE points!!! Stupid message board...

Congratulation to Red Avatar and everybody else who kicked my arse :D and thanks to Kosta for this great contest!!! I learned a lot during these past weeks and found tons of cool games I've never seen while searching for the answers, but I'm glad it's over... sometimes I couldn't sleep trying to figure out the games I didn't knew. Now that I have time I'm going to download some of those games and enjoy!

Thanks again Kosta!

P.S. An advice to all those people complaining about unsent PMs: you should have used the message tracker option. That way you'd allways be sure whether your message got read or not :ok: and it avoids the neccessity to bug the receiver with constant "did you get my PM?" messages.

The 'message tracker' option is great, however, it doesn't always work. I had a few messages that were marked 'unread', but after Kosta read it, they didn't change to 'read'. They just disappeared from message tracker. So I didn't have any idea whether ther were read or not, and I just had to PM Kosta again, asking if he got my answers. Fortunately, he did. :ok:

OMG, I just realized that was the way the "message tracker" works. I didn't even notice there was a "read messages" section (doh! stupid me! :tomato:). Only 1 out of 13 tracked PMs got into the "read" section, all of the other ones just dissapeared from the "unread" section after being read by Kosta (I thought that was the way the tracker worked). However, judging from my personal experience I can say that if the message dissapears from the unread section it has been read for sure (thanks god). Anyway, I always kept a copy of the PM'd answers in the sent items folder. In case of any problem they were proof of the time and date I sent them.
