Dark Seed II
Feel free to comment and discuss this game here. Also, if you have any useful tips or tricks don't hesitate to share them with the others! Thanks!
Review and Download (if available) |
..this game has excellent graphics for its time and some of the stuff that goes on when you get further into the story makes you think twice about the things that go bump in the night :sos:
|
Cool game. But just a little nudge: Giger isn't Swedish, he's Swiss ;)
PS: Yes, I am a guest. Maybe I register later. |
This is probably the ripped version - the actual game is an entire CD. There are some sites that have the entire ISO for those interested. Never really played it though - the first was very creepy.

|
You have to run setup in the SS1 directory.
|
Heh,I remember playing this when I was like 8....and it didnt even scare me...I had to be weird kiddo
Anyways, does this version have subtitles in cutscenes? CAuse My original doesnt and its kinda bothersome when you dont know what's happening |
:kosta: Great! One of the best adventure game I have ever played. I loved the story, atmosphere, graphic... I love H.P.Lovecraft. I love this game! ;)
|
I had bought this game together with a computermagazine back in 1996. I alway wanted to play the first these days. But since I only had an amiga around 94 (and of course before that, too) it was quite impossible. So I was so excited when I got this game. But in fact I was really disappointed by the game. The graphics were just cheap copies of Gigers artworks and the storyline wasn't that great either. To me this isn't a game you get nightmares of. You rather get a fit of laughter by this mouldy work...
I probably will never play the first part, even if it's better... I'm afraid of getting diappointed again.... BTW: what exactly has H.P. Lovecraft to do with this crap? AND: 1 out of 5 points...sry. |
Oh, I really liked the first one and I never knew there was a sequel. Can't wait to give this one a try. :brain:
|
You just need to download wing.dll and place it into the game's folder. The video and sound give problems though
|
Is there any way to get the cutscenes to run, or the spoken audio to work?
I don't mind reading text, but its impossible to follow the story without the cutscenes. |
I'd have to give this a 2 of 5. The opening cutscene is terrible, the acting and voiceovers just as bad. The music doesn't even fit. The actual game itself seems more like a slideshow, as there is no freedom of choice or exploration whatsoever. The only enjoyment from the "game" is the story itself, which has it's own faults. The writing is generic and nothing special, and is a bit corny. It's a decent game for free, if you can find it, but don't expect any lasting memorable experience from it. That's assuming you can get it to run of course.
|
BTW, what's all these errors about wavemix16.dll about?
|
I personally found this game really short and easy..
|
This game looks really good. Cant wait to play it. :w00t: :brain:
|
i am getting lots of errors when i switch on the audio for the character speech in the options.
Any ideas on how to fix it? |
Those nice scores in the review are a sharp contrast to the horrible reviews and terrible reception by the gaming community received when it was released. Or maybe it's just so old we can't tell whether it's good or not anymore :)
|
Kul vahad!
Dark Seed! My first adventure game (on Amiga500; those were the golden days). Just for curiosity, I have downloaded Dark Seed 2, but it does not work. Is there anyone who can help with this problem? Alas! I am afraid this soulless PC I have won't allow me to play and explore this beauty. Damn PC! "Thou shall not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind." |
Try using Compatibility Modes.
[Right-click on executable]->[Properties]->[Compatibility]. Set to Windows 98, 640x480, 256 colors. |

Thank you in anyway. |
Try to use that with the installer executable too. I remember some games in whose installation it actually helped.
|
I'm assuming this version is without the cutscenes, right? Is the story understandable at all without it?
|
Some of the people in this thread say it's not.
|
you don't have to install the game. Go into the darkseed folder and scroll down untill you see dark0001. Then double click to open it.
The Unknown |
this game is similar to "5 days a stranger", but with much more better graphic. But it looks darker in game! I like this game
|
Hi. I'm having a slight problem...
When I tried to play the game, it said the file was missing and needed to be located. I found it, but then I got an error saying it needs to be run on a certain resolution, but I told it to go on anyway. It errors out. So I turned my resolution to 800x600, the lowest, and the game starts... sort of... I get no image, but if I hit esc it asks me to save the game. I've tried running it all the compatabilities and colors, but nothing seems to work. Any idea what I can do? I'm using windows XP, by the way. |
when i run the setup file after extraction it only istalls a config file and it wont work :( help? :sos:
|
I've wanted to play this game for so very long. It slipped past me when it was first released, so I was so overjoyed when it got put on the hallowed database of Abandonia - but then I actually started playing it, and it's kind of, well, how shall I say.... underwhelming.
The story seems to be a bit weak - but maybe I'm missing something enlightening without being able to see the cutscenes (but that's not a problem, I understand the under 100mb rule, :) ) it's just that even if the cutscenes were included I don't think it would get much better. Oh well - it's a shame that this one would have been better left in my imagination :) |
This is strange, I download, run the right setup file, then the game says not to run, waiting for some "video", nothing happens, I go to the folder its empty and the shortcut cant find the file.
Anyone know what I am doing wrong? |

Have you tried changing the compatibility to Win95? That's all I can suggest, really.
|
If I run the game with win95 compatibility it causes stack overflow.
Also, all the .avi files appear as 0:00 seconds long. Is this a ripped version? |
Yes, it's a rip.
|
Dark Seed II - cutscenes = why bother?
|
Some people are able to enjoy ripped games, you know.
|
Ripped games is ALL I play, but why bother with half a game? |
Hi, I like Darkseed I and II, but the sequel how I convence gargan to take off the anvil ? And how I take the pills from him? I talk to him but he never helps someone pleaseee....
|
I swear this game was also available for the Playstation. I found the first Darkseed to hard, might give this one a go.
|
I'm all new to this kind of game setup :( I did loove, download and unzip the game, but when I try to open the executable file, I get an error message reading wing.dll and Wavmix16.dll files are missing. Some in this thread advised relocating the files (?) but I don't know how. as you can guess, I'm deep in need of help here :sos:
|
Typically, one would try four locations:
1. The game directory. 2. C:\Windows 3. C:\Windows\System 4. C:\Windows\System32 |

does the directory with unpacked game have 37 722 153 bytes ?

hi there.
new here so please don't be snarky if this question has been asked before. How do I run Darkseed 2 in a window rather than full screen on XP? the reason I'm asking is that I have a widescreen monitor and when I play DS2 the game runs in a tiny corner of the screen and the rest of the screen is black. many thanks |

Please can anyone help with this.
I really want to play this game as Darkseed was one of my favourite adventures. I cant run Darkseed 2 in Dosbox because i keep getting the message "This requires windows"(or words to that effect), however I have got the game to run on XP. My problem is that I have a widescreen monitor and despite adjusting the settings and compatibility, when the game runs it appears as a small image (filling about a sixth of the screen) in the top left corner of the screen with the rest of the screen just blank. Then I get a message telling me to adjust my settings to 600x800 8 bit mode. Is there way that i can run DS2 in a seperate window or increase the size of game so that it fits full screen as I am scared that it will damage my monitor if I play it in it's current configuration. BTW: My version of DS2 is an ISO w/ all of the full movie files and the original DS included, which I'm quite happy to share the torrent for. I would be extremely grateful for any help with this many thanks in advance P. |

mine says 37,722,180 bytes. im running win2k, is that a problem? also, the installer says its going to run video for windows setup, and not to run darkseed2 till its done. it never installs anything after the warning. whats up with that? any suggestions? :sos:

There are no cutscenes or voiceovers in this hacked version.
The game itself has an unfriendly interface and very restrictive interaction. However it is still fun to play. |

If you search the torrent sites there is an iso version of the game out there. My copy has the video and voiceovers, but will not play full screen as my widescreen monitor does not have 640x480 as a resolution. Does anyone know how to play this game in a window? (note the iso version does not run in dosbox but does work on xp if compatibilty changed). I'm sure I've read somewhere that games can be made to play in a seperate window by adding a line to the .ini file but not sure how to do this. Can anyone please help me. |
just a note: the executable you should go for is the one inside the DARKSEED folder (which is inside the MAIN 'Darkseed' folder), named DARK0001.exe
You don't need to install anything after unzipping |

Dark seed II (Part 2)
Hi again! Thanks for answer me!
I have a better question: How I install dark seed II in my PC. I have instaleed it, but it no run with the voices and sound. Apears a message error that i can't red. Please tell me the steps to install this games I have to do. Remembering that I download this game from this site. Please Help again. I've always thank you. PS: Sorry for my Inglish, I from Brazil. |
Seeing the game is a DOS game really, I suggest you use DOSBox or, if that doesn't work, try VDMSound, both found under the "Services" tab here on Abandonia, in the Programs section.
|
Actually, Darkseed 2 is a Windows game.
Drackma, does the message say anything about wing.dll or Wavmix16.dll? |
Ok, I looked it up on Moby Games and the only PC versions I found there were for DOS and Win 3.x. I was however uncertain coz of the XP icon on our game page.
|
when I run It in dosbox appears a message that it run in windows
|
I will try the vdmsound

Ok! I tried the print screen Button.
Now I can read the message. It Says: load_glue_file-> Unable to load gl00 file: C:\GAMES\DRKSEED2.CD\DARKSEED\gl00_dm.000 Exactly this. |
ok, it might be a corrupted download. Try re-download it.
|
This message appears in exact moment that the first personage talks (Sheriff).
The game run only without sound of the voices. |
Sorry, I do not know. Please read your PMs I sent you. I told you not to use the PM system to ask the same questions you ask here.
|
Hi!
Sorry for the PM messages. I've downlodaded this same game from e-mule. Now appears a message for WAVMIX16.DLL and WAVEMIX.INI files. I've downloaded this files and install in C:\ windows\ system and C:\ windows. But the game continue run only without voices. Do you know what I have to do? Thanks a lot. |
Put them also in C:\Windows\System32
|
I do it too.
The game gives the same error. |
The versio that I get from e-mule gives says that "wing.dll and Wavmix16.dll files are uncorrectly installed", and when I start the game occur an "Error loading Avi" and says too: "Sound driver is not find. All soun disabled."
An a windows says stack overflow "close". |
I had simular problems as some of you here. This is how I got around it.
Extracted the files to directory X. Ran the setup program mentioned above. creating a new directory where you want it. I then took all the files from the directory X and moved them into the new directory. Seems to work perfect now. |
Man, the game doesn't work properly for me.
I already had problems with starting it, but now the cuscenes aren't showing up; they are being skipped. |
a) There's no cutscenes in this rip
b) this is an ancient Windows game - Windows as in Windows 3.1. Wing was an early multimedia program akin to Quicktime - it made fast moving graphics possible in Windows 3.1 but later got eclipsed by DirectX. Of course, this stuff barely works in modern Windows versions like Vista. Personally, I'd just install Windows 3.1 in DOSBOX and run it from there. |
Need help on how to install it through DosBox. I'm running on vista btw. :oh:
|
Shouldn't be difficult. Just get a copy of said Windows version first and read the DOSBox readme.
|
I figured it out, can play it without dosbox on 32 bit vista and on a 1280x800 although as a small window within a full screen window.
|
Lower your desktop screen res first. -(IF possible on your hardware)-
Or run it in dosbox/W3.x full screen. Or VPC/W3.x. |
IMHO, the game cannot be run in a windowed mode. To run this game full-screen(as in taking all of your screen area, not just a little square at the top left corner), you need to first manually change your screen resolution to 640x480 from Windows Display properties. Here's how to do it:
1. Right-click on your desktop. 2. select "Properties..." from the menu that opens. 3. Change to the "Settings" tab. 4. Slide the resolution slider to "640x480" If your slider doesn't go way back to the resolution needed: 1. Click the "Advanced..." button under the color selector. 2. Change to the "Adaptor" tab. 3. Click the "Show all display modes..." button. 4. A dialog box appears with various screen resolutions, scroll all the way up on the scrollbar. 5. Select "640x480, 256 colors...", click OK. 6. Click "Apply" Your screen resolution should now change to the optimal resolution for the game. just click "Yes" on the dialog box to keep the settings. Now launch the game and play and it shoud play full-screen. By the way, if you reset the resolution and color depth of your display back to your original settings, you will have to change back to "640x480" every time you wish to play the game full-screen again. Happy gaming. |

I managed to install DS2 under win 3.1 that is running under dosbox.
My iso is not the ripped version. When I am under 3.1 i can play the .avi outside the game, but when I start the game (in windows 3.1) I get an error loading avi message. Then the game goes on playing without the cutscenes (giving me the error msg every time). Anyone has a solution for this? I can run the game under vista using the compatibility mode, but then I have to play it full screen which I would like to avoid. |
hmm, try looking for win 3.1 avi codecs around the net somewhere

Driver issue, perhaps?
|
I am using the S3 drivers for my win 3.1 installations. Tried with generic VGA drivers but not luck. I tried all resolutions and bit depth for both drivers.
Also, keep in mind that I can play the .avi within the win 3.1 instalation if i click the files in the gamers installation folder. It's just that the avis will not run within the game. |
I’ve recently managed to get the full Dark Seed II (incl. cut screen) game running in DosBox with Windows 3.11.
I use the S3 864 1.41B5 640x480 256 colors graphics driver, but there’s a conflict between that S3 driver and the Indeo 3.2 video software that Dark Seed II installs (included in Video for Windows 1.1e). It is causing the game/DosBox to crash when playing some of the cut screens – not necessarily every cut screen. The solution is fairly simple: Get a not so buggy version of Video for Windows 1.1e and install it, so that it replaces the one from Dark Seed II. Here’s a great guide on how to install Windows 3.11 on DosBox by Dominus: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=9405 There's a link to a working version of Video for Windows 1.1e i that guide. By the way: No matter what I did, Dark Seed II wouldn’t run in Windows XP Pro SP3. But it runs OK in DosBox with Windows 3.11 |
I had tried that before, but I did install windows video again but I still get an 'error loading .avi' when I start the game. Then it plays, but without cutscenes.
|
I’m sorry to hear that. All I can say is that it works nice for me when I use these drivers/applications:
DosBox 0.72 Windows for Workgroups 3.11 S3 864 1.41B5 640x480 256 colors SoundBlaster 16 Video for Windows 1.1e Before reinstalling Video for Windows, I would get an error message when playing some cut screens (not the intro videos): Page Fault in IR32.DLL (= Indeo 3.2). I could play the avi files outside the game, in that crappy Windows 3.11 Media Player. |
Hm, the only difference between my setup and your is that I got windows 3.1
I will have to update to 3.11 to check out if everything works fine. Anyone remembers if microsoft used to released updates? Or do I have to get a another clean install of 3.11? |
Hm, the solution might be something more obvious actually.
Could you please paste me the contents of your darkseed2.ini file? And are you mounting a cd-iso?? UPDATE: I FIXED IT! god yes!! after 1 month of tries. And I have no clue what I did to fix it. I installed it, reinstalled, installed video for windows 1.3e, but nothing. Then I installed it again on top of the old installation and used the cd video for windows 1.3 [not 'e' and it's the one that is supposedly bugged], but it WORKED for some reason! |
Wrong spelling
The very first word... its SWISS artist h.r. giger, not sweiss or anything else. The country is called switzerland in english and if u refer to something from that country like the army-knife its a swiss-army-knife. Swiss chocolate and so on...
Cheers! |
Edited to swiss.

its great game and i want to play it some errors about resolution, but i cant change resolution less than 800x600.. i tryed change compability but it says still same errors, dont know what to do |
DOS Version
The page on MobyGames (and others) shows that there is a DOS version of DS2... does that even exist? The version I downloaded from the ISO cellar is Windows only. Are there any traces of that version? Using it with DOSBOX could solve some compatibility problems.

Hello Friends of old games,
I wanna tell you how it went for me. First i bought the CD Version on ebay and noticed it didnt even react on win7 and i had to use dosbox and win3.1 . But i wanted an easier way so i searched the net and found a version with an russian installer that includes all sequences and is about 450mb large when installed. It already had dosbox and win3.1 and all the needed stuff to run it, a shortcut for starting inclusive. So nothing left to do than to play the game :perv:. just install and run via desktopshortcut on win7. Now, a little problem remains, there is one sequence at the beginning, when im in the living room and i watch tv, the game crashes after some seconds. Maybe this problem is known to you, so can please someone tell me what to do to fix it? Thanks in advance and keep up the good shit. Sweem PS: if you are interested in my game version just send me a pm. |
