I hope this doesn't sound all too dumb but I allways associated Warhammer with some kind of table top strategy game, where the players led their armies against each other, with a medieval and a 40k version. So what has Blood Bowl to do with Warhammer, or is this something completely different?

mouse31e 05-11-2004 10:09 PM

From what I remember - cos I never had the game...

Blood Bowl was a kind of violent american football board game played with warhammer figures (and had some warhammer-like rules?)

I think the connection was the company games workshop who were I think responsible for both games.

Havell 05-11-2004 10:51 PM

Yes, they both have orcs, goblins, etc., they are both played with plastic figures, dice rolling and other Warhammer rules still apply and they are made by Games Workshop.

Fenris 05-11-2004 10:59 PM

Sounds as if it would be a spin off to make even more money with an allready expensive game. Well at least some of these little figurines look really awesome, so lets have a look if this game here can compete with 'em...

Durak 05-11-2004 11:54 PM

Hopefully I can find time to try this out this weekend since it's a Warhammer game I've never heard of (I haven't even heard of this board game!).

Psyclone 06-11-2004 02:23 AM

I remember spending some time playing this in my youth(board game), was fun, but the novelty soon wore off and went back to the orginal WarHammer game. :D :Titan:

Tom Henrik 06-11-2004 10:45 AM

Actually, the Blood Bowl board game is much cheaper than Warhammer. Less figurines. The fun is still there. I recommend everyone to try it (the boardgame).

Durak 06-11-2004 05:39 PM

Just tried to run it with DOSBox (and without) and got this error:

Can't load C:\Blood\ART\ART.WAD

Real highwater = 3324:4E10 (229456 bytes)
XMS highwater = 0

Any help?

Aristharus 06-11-2004 06:08 PM

Don't forget Warhammer was also a roleplaying game. WFRPG (Warhammer Fantasy RolePlaying Game) had some very cool ideas in it. I never played it with figurines. It's meant to be played with them, but it doesn't need them.

That tells me you didn't read all of the review.

It MUST be placed in C:\Blood

You CAN NOT fake this in DOSBox.

After the game is in C:\Blood run the game with BB

Durak 06-11-2004 09:30 PM

What are you talking about Tom? It says C:\Blood in my message =p. Also since it is in the correct spot, I tried running BB again and it doesn't work. Else, you meant that I need to move all the rest of the files into C:\Blood and get rid of sub folders...

Tom Henrik 07-11-2004 11:27 AM

Did you install the game?

With correct settings?

Durak 17-11-2004 01:22 PM

I've tried a little lately but when I run the install file it freezes my computer, so I'm not sure any other way to install it.

Sim 23-11-2004 11:30 PM

Durak,

I had the same problem but I figured it out.

I originally tried to just do it all in one step and mount c as c:\blood and that doesn't work.

What you need to do is mount c as c:\ and then change directory to blood and run bb from there. That means, one step at a time, you do this...

mount c c:\
c:
cd blood
bb

Game should work fine then :) Happy blitzing.

Guest 30-11-2004 09:53 PM

it won't work for me either, dosbox just crashes out

Anonymous 04-12-2004 06:17 AM

Well, while it's nice to see a great game made into a computer game, this doesn't do Blood Bowl (the boardgame) any justice. It's just not the same.

Calinarion 18-12-2004 10:55 AM

When installing - I get the error message:
Warning: file creation failed: c:\downloads\dos\midpak.ad

I do not even get to choose a directory to install to (which is supposed to be c: i know)
And yes, I do have installed all your sounddrivers.
Any help?

mouse31e 18-12-2004 10:58 AM

You shouldn't need to install it.

Just extract the zip to C:\Blood and then run BB.exe.

Hope that helps! :D

Calinarion 18-12-2004 03:58 PM

thx, and there's by the way no need to put it in c:. Just remove all text from the bb.cfg file with a text-editor

ignus 28-12-2004 08:57 PM

Maikel, I found parts of your review odd.

Quote:

When the game comes to an end and all the Star Player Points (SPP) have been given out, you may want to give your players new abilities. Sorry, you can't. The game engine chooses these for you automatically (and randomly, it seems). You may have a Blocker, who would benefit the most from gaining the Block or Mighty Blow skill, but suddenly he will have Sure Hands the next time you see him. The only way you can influence your players is by buying Star Players like Hafklem Skuttlespike or Griff Oberwald.
I have a original copy of the game and that have never occured to me. All players, whether original or bought, have the exact same abilities every match and every game they are in. If this is not the case in your version, something is probably wrong with it.

Excellent game by the way.

Tom Henrik 28-12-2004 09:51 PM

When I played the game (which is for download here) my players recieved new skills as the game progressed.

Zach 06-01-2005 07:58 AM

Sim, I followed your instructions and ended up with a "memory allocating buffer" error. Any idea how this might be fixed?

Zach 06-01-2005 09:06 AM

Got it working, but does anyone know a nice way to make dos box run faster? I've already got the frameskip and gamespeed going as fast as possible.

Guest 29-01-2005 01:00 AM

What do I need to do if after putting it in the Blood directory.. and starting BB.exe... it says can't allocate enough XMS. ????

Gareth 12-02-2005 08:20 PM

not to sound stupid, but i have dosbox saying c:\BLOOD> and i have tried typing bb but it is an illegal command, please help.

Wicked game man!

Guest_hillel_kitty 17-02-2005 09:34 PM

Anyone know how to speed up mouse cursor movement? It seems like whenever I try to use the mouse, I reach the edge of the mousepad before the cursor has moved an inch. I RTFM, but it doesn't say anything about mouse speed. Thanks!

Faulcon 03-03-2005 09:47 AM

If you want to play bloodbowl, you're much better off going here:

fumbbl - online bloodbowl

Very close to the real thing (as per current living rulebook) using a java based client to allow you to play others over the net.

I've only just downloaded this the other day, it looks cool. I used to play the boardgame years ago. :D

Guest 03-04-2005 05:06 PM

At risk of sounding like the fanboy I can be :D - in fairness to this game it should be pointed out that it is an older version of BB, at the time the game didn't have special play cards and Star Players were created wholly randomly - at best different positions had different tables to roll on to acquire skills but there wasn't nearly the level of customisation you can get with the current version (sometimes made it more fun actually). If it's the version I think it is (downloading now :) ) it's not a bad representation of the game as it was.

Blutch 03-04-2005 10:06 PM

Yep all,

I like this game but i can't save my play and i do restart continually
Someone can save the game when playing the league?

ps: sorry for my english but i'm from belgium and i speak french :bye:

BLOOD BOWL AS A COMPUTER GAME! I LOVE YOU!

Khaspah 13-04-2005 07:15 PM

Great game!! Some problems... I offer possible solutions...

First of all, Iīm from Spain, so my English is not very good (yet :D ).

I havenīt played Blood Bowl since I have 15 years old and I played the board game with my friends. Now Iīm 28 and I just have discovered this MAGNIFICENT PC version of the board game.

I finally can play Blood Bowl with a PC with Windows 98. Without sound, without music.... I say "No" to ALL the options in the menu, and the game can run normally.

LEAGUE PROBLEMS: The game saves AUTOMATICALLY every match. When you want to continue a league, there is a "third" option in the menu: Exhibition Play, Start League and Continue League. You can access to this options pressing the right or left arrow keys.

I canīt buy players... the game "collapses" :not_ok: . But I have discovered a trick or two just to do this.

1.- In www.abandonware-france.org you can find a patch that fix some problems of BloodBowl: bugs and so on. This will make BloodBowl not to collapse DURING matches, and enables the link option.

2.- In http://www.schtuff.org/grog/ you can find a.... TEAM EDITOR!!! :ok: . Just install it in C:\blood and run bowledit.exe. The program let you select a league and then access to all the teams and players. When I want to buy a player, I just enter the team editor and change the name, attributes and skills of one of my players (Iīm very fair and I even "pay" the player cost).
Of course, you can change your team name, and you can cheat creating a team of Terminators... but I think this will make the game loosing interest...

Well, thatīs all (for the moment). I just want to thanks Abandonia and the other cool abandonware sites. BloodBowl has been one of my favorite board games ever (also with Warhammer and Warhammer 40K, of course), and now I can play it on my PC.

Thanks, thanks, thanks a lot!!!

Antonio_157 23-04-2005 05:05 AM

I get that same XMS memory problem, in that my cmd window spits out, "Cannot allocate enough XMS"

i've installed blood bowl to c:\

So to access i do c:\blood\bb.exe

I believe this is the correct proceedure, tho the xms memory is still quite perplexing to me.

Please Help, as i used to play this game quite alot on the table top version

www.ginetti.com.au <- my web site :D

Bramme 24-04-2005 06:47 PM

I can't get the game running!!!
can anyone help me.

I installed the game to c as in the guide, but when running it from dosbox i get the aforementioned error of XMS

when trying to run the install i get some message of: "files are being copied from your CD-rom drive" ... which is pretty stupid since I don't have the CD-rom.
He's trying to install D:\sound\midpack.ad

I can't do anything, as soon as I launch install it gives me the downloading thing..

I'm not a real hero with PC's but I sure like to play BB!

If anyone could give me a word of help.... tnx

rumackay 28-04-2005 11:38 AM

:help:

I finally got the game working but when I tried to continue a season, dosbox crashes.

I then tried the suggested patch update, installed that fine, now when I try and load through dosbox it only comes up with the message:

"Current mounted drives are:
Drive C is mounted as local directory c:\
Drive Z is mounted as Internal Virtual Drive"

Any ideas on what that means. The game now doesn't load at all.

Felix Jaegar 12-05-2005 11:23 AM

I can not get this game to play! I have installed the game and Dosbox, I go into dosbox and then do the follwoing

c:dir

cd blood

dir

bb

and dosbox just crashes out.

Someone help me please, I used to play the table top version and it is purely curiosity that is making play this.

If however any of you really want to play Blood Bowl then may I suggest the following link

http://www.chaosleaguegame.com/

I actually run an online league in this if anyone is interested

http://chaosleague.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk

Walternacktofs 17-05-2005 09:54 AM

:help: :help: :help: when trying to run it it say

Internal Error : #1004 - Out of memory allocating buffer

Real Highwater = 2FE1:73F0 (225792 bytes)
XMS highwater = 0

whats wrong i have put the blood folder in c: and im trying to run it with Dosbox but it don't work pls someone answer

joekrismas 09-06-2005 09:34 AM

I followed all the installation instructions. However when I try to disable the sound in Setup the game automatically tries to install from D:\sound\midpack.ad

This causes the application to hang.

Is there a workaround?

Guest 25-07-2005 10:41 PM

Ran horrifically slowly for me, and it's not the good ol' fun-lovin' edition I played as a nipper.
Booo.

Guest 30-07-2005 01:30 PM

If you want to play Blood Bowl, I suggest you play it at http://fumbbl.com . It's a lot better than this one, and it has (almost) all of the rules of the LRB in it, save a few handicaps...

PrejudiceSucks 30-07-2005 02:23 PM

Remember kids, now Chaos League is available and it makes this look rubbish. It's a really, really good game along the same kind of idea.

Very French.

Khaspah 28-08-2005 02:54 PM

How to play BloowBowl without problems...

Some Windows versions have an available mode to play old games. Just search this: "ms-dos mode for games with xms and ems" or something similar. With this option I can play Blood Bowl leagues, buy and sell players, etc.

Bye!

JO 23-11-2005 05:30 AM

Hey!!

So much fun playin on board with friend...

Now tying the BB comp game

But i still need some help i(d like to speed up my dos box how could i do it

Thanx

Guest_Paul 12-12-2005 12:41 AM

Control + F12 speeds up dosbox.
If you read the dos-box guide which is on this site and read the optimisation section it have other info in as well.

Guest 03-04-2006 03:19 AM

I am having the same problem installing the game. I follow the c:\blood but I cna not get it to read the files nothing in my dir. I can see they are there on my hard drive I unzipped them to C:\cdrive\blood but I can not get it to work and with all my time I do not always have enough to play online and would love to be able to play this game. :(

Guest 11-05-2006 09:26 PM

Will just tell all that we are ALOT of people playing this online through a java client (works both on mac and pc) through the site www.fumbbl.com - The java bb client is completely free. Only thing the game requires is to have java and its best to have some sort of irc client. Check it out - have so far used way way over 700 hours on this game online

Guest 19-06-2006 03:27 PM

Blood bowl board game is a great game to bad this one sucks.
Why does it take the computer forever to take its turn?

I mean good god .. Do some thing!!!!!
is thare a way to make it game run faster using DOSbox? like a fast forward?
any one run this on an X box emulatior?

The Fifth Horseman 20-06-2006 11:15 AM

You might want to check the game options. There might be some sort of a speed setting.

Sharkbait 04-07-2006 04:06 AM

The starting problems with this game are the result of a faulty bb.inf
When you open it with notepad it should only state the full path where you unpacked Blood Bowl.

In most cases this should be: C:\BLOOD\

Any other stuff in this file should be removed and the game will work :titan:

HAVE FUN !!! :w00t:

Hopefully someone is still reading this. I downloaded the files but install won't work - firstly, the install from dos window pops up but it looks for files in a Sound subdirectory, which does not seem to exist. Secondly, it is trying to copy files from D:\ - it seems to have problems with the fact it is no longer reading from a CD, but a downloaded bunch of files.

Can someone please, for a moron like me, post a step-by-step guide to installing the game & getting up & running, from the moment you have finished downloading the file on this page?

Thanx

The Fifth Horseman 17-08-2006 03:43 PM

First, are you using DosBox? I presume not.
You can download it here.

If you have any problems with it, try having a look at the official FAQ on the DosBox site.
Basic Setup and Installation
Command Line
Z instead of C at the command prompt
Internal Programs (important, especially MOUNT)
Most of the stuff in there is not really needed, but you would do best to familiarize yourself with the specific topics I linked to.
The mounting of your DosBox games directory, switching the promt to the emulated C: drive and clearing the screen from previous commands can all be executed from the [autoexec] section of dosbox.conf, so you won't have to re-type them every time round.
Frontend programs can help running DosBox with varying configurations for different games.
For both a more accessible user interface and oldschool feel, you can use Norton Commander (get it from our programs and utilities page - scroll down to the bottom to find it). NC might seem awkward at first, but in fact it is a very functional genuine DOS era file manager frontend. It has a plethora of functions that will help you in navigating around the directories, while still retaining the command prompt.

Though all of this might seem complicated, it's very easy once you get used to it. So remember:

DON'T PANIC!!! ^_^

If you mean DosBox - read the post just above yours.

Guest 03-10-2006 05:07 AM

Has anyone looked into why the replay system doesn't work, It seems to me like it has something to do with the sound?

Guest 03-10-2006 06:37 AM

well you can just turn off sound in the optiosn menu to get replays working, but i was hoping there was a better solution, I messed around with DosBox alot but no luck.

Guest 21-11-2006 10:39 PM

I just found a copy of this game on my old hard drive, (by old I mean 6 years old) I had problems with the abandonia version but my old one loads up fine on dos box, I'll go check if theres any problems. If you want it sent to you email [BEEEP]@hotmail.com its not worth spamming it, I use hotmail accounts instead of my main account publicly as a filter. Theyre easy to just open a new one

The Fifth Horseman 22-11-2006 09:55 AM

Please do not post your e-mail adress in open like that.

If your version of the game works better then the one we currently have on Abandonia, please register an account and PM one of the admins for login and password to our FTP server where you can upload your archive to replace the current one. :)

What version of DosBox are you using?

Thx :sos:

The Fifth Horseman 26-02-2007 04:20 PM

Use DosBox to run the game. You can download it here.

UlthaR 06-03-2007 11:14 PM

I used it to run it but always give me this error:

Can't load C:\Blood\ART\ART.WAD

The Fifth Horseman 07-03-2007 02:24 PM

Sounds like you're missing a file or set your unpacker to ignore paths within the archive.
Try redownloading the game and unpacking it with full paths.

I was also having trouble starting this game because I tried to run INSTALL instead of just typing BB.
If you have tried to run INSTALL, it won't work and you need to download the game again.
The following worked for me:
1. Download game to c:\blood
2. Open BB.INF file in a text editor and remove all the text except the following:- C:\BLOOD\
3. Open DOSBOX
4. type mount c c:\
5. type cd blood
6. type bb

At no time do you need to run INSTALL
Hope this helps

Guest 25-04-2007 06:03 AM

The bb.inf file that comes in the download here has extra parts that make it fail to run.

I think someone mentioned this, but open the bb.inf file. If you delete the D:\ and all the space between it and the C:\Blood\ part, then remove the space and blocks after it, it runs. Basically, the "C:\Blood\" should be the only thing in the file. I guess they might have been left over from the game that this download was taken from.

Hope that helps.

I had a similar problem. I think it's because when you mount C:\Blood in DOSBox, it recognises it as C:\ - therefore if you have the ART folder in your C:\Blood folder, DOSBox only recognises it as C:\ART, and the game can't find it. I solved it by creating another Blood folder and putting the folders in that.

Incidentally, both the description and some of the posts here refer to improving players by using Star Player Points. However I've not seen this mentioned in the manual, nor have I encountered it in the handful of games I've played. How does this work?

Nutsaur 24-04-2008 10:23 AM

Thanks for your help with mounting the game - It worked for me mounting c:\ first then cd blood etc.

Apologies if someone has already asked but about the sound...The given discription said it doesn't really work but can we fix it? It comes and goes and when its happening its awesome! The music is great but I miss the attacking noises, and the failing to pick up the ball noise.

I love this game! I played it to death as a kid so any help I'd greatly appreciate.

Interesting concept of fantasy rugby/am. football, I think there is a remake of this, released this year, it's probably a lot of fun. :ouch:
