I played Traveler pen & paper RPG as a teenager...but only a few nights. It was quiet nice, I never went on being a GM (I think there was lots of calculation to do *sigh*). I was more into other RPGs, Shadowrun (also some calculations!), Warhammer, Call of Cthulhu, the main ones...
I'm definetly gonna try this PC version of the game ;)

P.s. - Varg (Vargr) means wolf or wolves ^_^

Again my thumbs up Abandonia!

The Fifth Horseman 07-07-2006 12:25 PM

In some settings, Vargr is used for werewolves.

Destroier 07-07-2006 02:43 PM

It's just me or this Ancients race are the ones from Stargate SG-1?

Guest_Silver_* 07-07-2006 09:27 PM

Nice game, although the combat seems a bit cumbersome :( .

Guest_abc_* 08-07-2006 12:34 AM

"...combat have been greatly simplified, and are fully menu-driven..."

great, I've been looking for some space travelling game without action sequences so I'll
definitely try this one...

btw, is combat in megatraveller 1 also menu-driven or...?

cjlr 08-07-2006 04:53 PM

So, how exactly do you pick a face? The manual says it's right after naming, but I didn't find it.

Gaston the Guest 10-07-2006 02:55 PM

How hard would it be to solo this game, and it's predecessor? By that I mean, take only a single character. Can you pick up skills along the way?

Guest 13-07-2006 06:04 PM

Destroier asked "It's just me or this Ancients race are the ones from Stargate SG-1?"

Not likely, as much material for the Traveller RPG comes from 1978 or so. There are diferences between the Asgard and the Ancients, but telling you them here might spoil your SG-1 viewing or your Traveller play. :)

The Ancients were but one of many things to discover and explore in the Traveller universe. One thing that set Traveller apart was the really cool back story, and the Travellers News Service. In the Journal of the Travellers Aid Society, there would be these little news briefs of happenings in other parts of the Imperium. To me, it gave the impression that the hardy band of adventurers that I was a part of was just one small bit of much larger goings on.

MT2 captures much of the spirit of the original RPG, and is loads of fun.

Try the game, you'll probably like it. If you want more, the paper version is in reprint, and MT2 is a fine character generator for the paper version!

Cheers!

Actually I really enjoyed the character generation system. It's far superiour to many games of much newer date. But when the real game started I was quite disappointed... all towns on the first planet look almoust the same, couldn't find anything else but towns with few useful NPCs on the whole planet and so on... quite boring. I don't know if i should give the game some more time...

Mongi 22-07-2006 09:13 AM

Right... Plus, it's extremely difficult to understand where to go and what to do:(

Abeek 23-07-2006 02:24 PM

I cant get past the copy protection and i dont understand the codes to the copy protection.

Absurdnerd 26-07-2006 12:55 AM

This was a great game for it's time. The character generation was unique and true to MT. Wish they made more more games like for modern computer systems.

lowlylowlycook 17-08-2006 02:34 PM

So far this game looks like it has a lot of potential. Compared with the first one the interface seems a lot more sane. And I just love the character generator. However I don't really "get" the combat. There are two issues, first the speed of combat is pretty fast without much time to react even with the cycles in dosbox turned down pretty far. At least the react setting means the chars can sort it out for themselves. Secondly, I don't reallly see any feedback about what is happening. In the first game you could tell if the enemy had two much armor for you weapons since you could see you were doing zero damage. I don't see that kind of info in the sequel. Somehow I feel this game would be great if it just had been turned based.

So any combat tips from the veterans of this series? What kind of weapon skills should I be looking for in my chars? Any other important skills? Tactics or steath maybe?

lowlylowlycook 18-08-2006 04:01 PM

OK, I have another question. How does recruiting replacements from your character pool work? The manual says you should be able to recruit other char you have made but I don't see any of them or the premades for that matter.

stenole 04-09-2006 07:03 PM

I remember playing this game ages ago. And by playing, I mean creating characters. I loved the character generator. But as was said by someone else here, the game itself is harder to get into.

Golan2072 09-10-2006 08:44 AM

Two questions about the game:
1) How do you take pictures of an Ancients site (those are worth Cr100,000 IIRC)?
2) What use is a Hand Computer?

Guest 30-10-2006 08:40 PM

Where's fifth horseman when you need him? I'd bet he has the answers we need. ^_^

The Fifth Horseman 31-10-2006 11:38 AM

Not this time, sorry. I simply never played this game.

Avelardo 02-11-2006 08:32 AM

That's a shame, I for one could use the help.

The review is spot on, I've never played the RPG but now I understand why the neighborhood gamers ate up every pen-and-paper supplement for it. Very detailed, though my own, character creations have been either dying on me during creation or washing out after one or two terms in their chosen fields ("I'm here to save your planet, but I never made it through college and I stow away on my rich canine friend's ship and mooch off his pension!" *fangirls swoon*).

Edit: Okay, I found a few tips/tricks, but they're basically monetary ones, which are kind of dumb, considering the amount of effort to go through them.

Tip 1, "Extra money":
Quote:

Locate Trow Beckett at Rhylandor near the University.
Talk to him to receive a locator, coins, and a diary.
Drop all those items.
Select "Give" and any character.
Trow will offer a random amount of money for an item.
Select "Continue" and build your total funds.[/b]
Tip 2, "Unlimited credits":
Quote:

Create a blank data disk with Scouts (saved characters) that have bank balances of over 100,000 credits.
Load the game with the current party disk (without the "rich" Scouts).
Move to a Starport with both Recruit and Account facilities and transfer all funds into individual accounts except for one character that will receive nothing.
Leave the Starport, break the party, kill the character with no funds, and return safely to the Starport.
Insert the data disk, recruit the person at the top of the list into the party, transfer all his money into another party member's account, then kill that person.
Recruit the next person on the data disk and repeat this process until all characters on the disk have been imported.
Save the game and reload.
Recruit the original character back into the party to collect all the accumulated credits.[/b]
Tip 3, "A quick tip to gain cash":
Quote:

Find a High Tech world with a low law level and buy as many PGMP's as possible, although this may only be one initially.
Then go to a lower Tech, higher law level world and sell the merchandise.
The ideal pleanets are: LLUN/EFATE (when using the trader character on the disk you can purchase a PGMP for 130500 credits) and STUR/EFATE (where not only is there a PGMP lying on the floor nesar the Gun shop, but they can be sold for 244500 credits).
In no time at all and with a little cost (because you are staying within the system) you will gain riches untold![/b]

Official Hintbook anyone?

Hey all. When this game came out, i saved up my allowance for weeks to get the hintbook that is offered for sale after dropping back to DOS. They were sold out of the books, so they sent me copy-machine quality images of the real thing instead. They did however have plenty of maps, so i actually received the real 4-color map.
I can't seem to find the map, which is frustrating. However, if anyone is interested in the book's content, i'll find some way of uploading it here. As far as hintbooks go, it's not the best i've seen. It does list pretty much everything in the game, where to get it, and what to do with it.
Another great feature is that it explains all the skills, and EXACTLY what they do in the game. Helps a lot when making that "perfect team" that can accomplish anything you'll come across. Also explains how to make characters that will start with lots of money, a ship, TAS membership, large pensions, etc.
It does list:
-all the main quests
-all the subquests
-all bounties
-all items and locations
-exactly how to get the ancient ship (4-jump ship, infinite fuel!!)
-quick ways to make money in the game (not just at char-gen)

It does not list:
-cargo prices on planets (this one really annoys me)
-weapon stats, armor stats

Basically the book tells you the info, and you have to figure out how to do it. Not a bad thing really, but can be confusing at times. Also, why they don't include more planet info is beyond me - that was what i really wanted when i bought the thing in the first place!

PM me if interested.

Ha. I could never understand what I was doing (or supposed to be doing) in the game. Creating characters, mixing them into groups and then exploring alone was actually really fun. I think that I have only ever completed the sidequests... And that makes me want to play the main quest, just to see what the game's story is really about.

Actually, it kind of reminds me of a really "early" Fallout. :oh:

AnHero 20-10-2009 12:02 AM

Well, I have one hint for you people.

DISREGARD the scoutship.
It's way too small. It'll kill your trading dreams faster than a electric light on a fly.

The costs pay back quickly if you get lucky in a game of rob the robber, while piloting a far trader.

Unregistered2 19-06-2010 04:43 PM

Applying the 1.04.2 patch (downloadable in various places, do some googling) seems to disable the copy protection.

And it adds H for Hail and C for converse shortcut keys. Very practical.

Review & Download (if available)

I've tried downloading the game with zero success. Perhaps the game is incompatible with Windows Vista. Suggestions?

Eagle of Fire 04-06-2013 01:47 AM

I tried to download the game. It work flawlessly.

There is obviously something going on on your end.

The Fifth Horseman 04-06-2013 07:55 AM

Or he's trying to convey that the game itself doesn't work on Vista, and is mistakenly attributing that to a problem during download. We've seen that before.

Eagle of Fire 04-06-2013 11:10 PM

You might be right. How could one mistake downloading and installing, however, is still way out of my mental reach.
