I know, this topic existed already when the old design of Abandonia was there, but now we have a lot of new members joined here, so it would be interesting to know what kind of music and what composers especially of it you all listen to.
So let's begin with me (of course :sneaky: ). Actually I like anything that sounds good, with the exception od Rap and Hip-Hop, but those are my special favourites: Falco, Manowar, Rhapsody, Motorcycle (they seem to have brought out only 1 song as yet...), Enigma and Chopin.

Metallica rocks!

Metal's my favourite too (Dragonforce are my favourite, thanks to Chef Boyardee for introducing me to them). Falco is also good (thanks to FreeFreddy for telling me about them). i'm also partial to a bit of AC/DC every now and then.

Does anyone of you know OP:L Bastards? And especially their song Scorpius? (Probably Tom or Titan could...)

Well. I used to play the guitar in a Metallica jam band. That was REALLY fun. Later on I played the base in a heavy rock band called "Jeg hedder Kurt" (Danish language). This was not as heavy as Metallica, but still heavy and very melodic.

I used to be a HUGE fan of Metallica, I have only seen them live once though (Roskilde festival 1999, :D if you ever come to Denmark, go to a danish festival, they are the definition of party and fun! :max:). Later on I have been a HUUUGE fan of Dream Theater :kosta: (Technically the best band in the world. Now doubt about that! :sneaky: ). Now when I think about it, I'm still a huge fan of Dream Theater. If you like progressive and melodic heavy rock, you will like Dream Theater (The singer has a pretty shrill voice, so if you are a growl person, Dream Theater might not be for you after all.

BTW, I am beginning to like Ramstein more and more. I don't understand a word of the lyrics, but GOD DAMN the music is just so... ehhr... well, HEAVY :evil:

Can't. Thingy doesn't have batteries. Besides, it's a small teethwound on the inner side of my lower lip, some small bruices above my temples (covered up with hair) and that's 'bout all. Already cleaned the blood up of the bloodnose.

I listen to a very broad range of music as long as its no HipHop, Rap or Techno. My Favorites at the moment are Nightwish, Edenbridge, Music by Gandalf, Falco and right at the moment I am listening to Smetana's 'Die Moldau'.

I used to listen to a bit of Metal. I sorta moved away from that a bit, as I find it wasn't really helping me as a person much, just getting me down and such. I'm still a big fan of Dream Theater. I love their music, but I don't like their new album all that much. I'm more into their Awake/SFAM stuff.

I've turned to more mellow/accoustic stuff now. Mainly Jeff Buckley, The Ptayer Boat, Tom McRae, Damien Rice. I also love the Chili Peppers music and Ben Harper and Rage Against the Machine.

It only took me a year. I'm finally not an abandonia nerd.

I listen to all sorts of music. Although I'm not a fan of R'n'B, rap and hip-hop. Few good songs every once in a while, but in general I don't like them.
I'm really into oldschool-rock (AC/DC, Led Zeppelin etc). Then new rock and pop music. I also listen a bit to techno (thanks to Kosta :ok: ) and I love classical music.
My fav bands are Muse and AC/DC ;)

I listen to lots of stuff actually, though everything remotely related to eurodance / dance / trance is something I dislike.

I have cd's of : Cypress hill, Everlast, Interpol, 60/70 music, Grandmaster Flash, Red hot chilli peppers, drum&bass stuff, Felix da Housecat, Rage against the Machine, etc etc.

Basicly I listen to electrorockhiphop&bass I suppose

I like mostly dance/electronic/big beat ,and so on, music.
Artists like: Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, Roger Sanchez, Chemical Brothers, Armand van Helden, Massive Attack, Moby, Faithless,...and 70's disco! :kiddi:(BeeGees and others...)

There are three. I have Origin of Symmetry and Absolution, but there is one other. Absolution is the latest one, I'm not sure which is older; Origin or the other (don't remember the name).

I like many kinds of electronic UG music, especially Hardcore techno (doomcore, speedcore, terror). Also everykinds of machine oriented techno with repeating machinelike sounds.

I also make music myself. Latest "album" includes instrumental hip hop beats. I also have very long experience of making hardcore and dark ambient.

Also Sprach Zaratustra was written after Wagner's death. The composer was Richar Strauss (not related to the famly of Strauss' that made the waltzes) and was inspired by Friderich Nitzche (who was a personal friend of Richard and his main book is also called Also Sprach Zaratustra - Thus spoke Zaratustra).

Well maybe I was a bit too hars to say that but It's just not really my genre of music. I really like many kinds of music but new age.. not just me kind of thing. I prefer dark ambient more. Actually im currently working on music project that combines dark ambient and industrial. If Im lucky, I even might get some of them to system shock 2 fan project. :)

Lately I've been very much into Polish rock & punk, namely Pidzama Porno, Kult, Maanam, etc. The international ones in my playlist include David Bowie, the Stones, and pretty much everything from the '60s and '70s (from Janis to Velvet Underground to Dylan to The Who). And of course Tom Waits and Iggy Pop.

No rap or junkpop here, thank you.

You're absolutely right. There's no point discusing the different tastes. Still, someone who listens to something different from yourself may show you something you'd like, but never even knew existed.

I listen to many kinds of music, but my favourite is the rock progressive from the 70's (like King Crimson, Genesis 'till 1976, Jethro Tull and Yes), expecially long suites like "Supper's Ready" and the rock opera "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" (which I advice everyone to listen to) by Genesis, "A Passion Play" and "Thick As A Brick" by Jethro Tull.

Apart from 'em, a various bunch including Vangelis, Marillion, Edvard Grieg, Nirvana, Queen and many more.

Anyone of you knows Frontline Assembly? If you search for a music of it's own kind and that needs to sound very good, try this group out. It's genre is Industrial + EBM, so it's little different from the usual music that is and was out before. And it's GOOD! :ok:

I love metal! My current favorite bands are Summoning, a Lord of the Rings-based black metal band that uses really weird synthesizers and drums to create a medieval feelings, Therion, a power metal band that uses opera singers, Elvenking, a folk metal band that uses really cool violins, Orphaned Land, an Israeli metal band that sings about peace in the Middle East, and of course, Blind Guardian, the kings of metal.

Iron Maiden will always be my most favorite though <3

In fact, I love metal so much that I think I'll share a little with you, just enough to get you interested in a few of these bands =)

Therion - Asgard - This incredible song blends both the strength of power metal and the almost mystical beauty of opera in an absolutely incredible song about the home of the Norse Gods. Currently my favorite song, the singing is just so beautiful and the solo at the very end is one of the best I've ever heard.

Summoning - South Away - Out of all the songs I'm posting, I think you will like this one the least. The singing is absolutely terrible and the music requires a certain taste. Nevertheless, this band incorporates very epic-sounding synthesizers, an eclectic drumming machine, horrible vocals, and a very heavy guitar played almost like an Italian mandolin to create one of the most unique sounds that metal has to offer. Even though you probably can't understand the lyrics due to the awful singing, it's about the Lord of the Rings =P

Orphaned Land - A Call to Awake - This song, although not as noticably Middle Eastern as many of the others by this band, still has a very Middle Eastern flavor, and is about peace in Israel. The guitars progressively get heavier as the song goes along, and it starts off with a riff very reminiscent of 1980's rock. Very good song that is particularly appealing to proponents of peace!

Elvenking - The Silk Dilemma - This folk metal band incorporates beautiful and almost ghostly strings that make it even more incredible than it already is. This song is one of my favorites by them, it has a very soothing tune as well as very good male and female vocals. Check it out if you're looking for an almost "light-hearted" song.

Iced Earth - Valley Forge - One of three American bands I like, Iced Earth sings about Valley Forge, one of the epic battles fought by George Washington in the American Revolution. Although the vocals are not spectacular, the dark and powerful melody of this song is incredible. Definitely check it out.

I liked The Iced Earth album, Dark Saga, im not even a fan of Spawn but it made me interested and the story is a classic love - death one, i guess. I did read somewhere that the singer was not the usual Iced Earth one, so i may be listening to a diferent era for the band than you. I dont know.

I listen to any music that is intelligent...and sounds good.

I despise pop, nu-metal and the music that the kids refer to as punk these days.

I don't think intelligent and dumb are the right words to use but I think I know what Maerlyn means.

I don't like music that is mbehind produced, all sounds the same and has very little 'musical' content. :angry:

I like music that has had some thought put into it by the songwriters. I alsp like music that uses real musicians and instruments. There is nothing wrong with electronic elements in music but anyone can sit at a computer and create a drumbeat and bbehind line with the right software.

I disagree, you should go to digitalnoise and check out some of the artists talked about there.

Once upon a time i believed what you are saying aswell - that changed quite quickly after i discovered Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, Aphex Twin, Coil, Ministry.....there are alot of good electronic artists out there you just need to find them.

My advice to anyone is turn off the radio, turn off the tv and search the net...join a good forum with open minded people not devoted to just one band - and you will be amazed at the talent out there that hasnt been sold to the mbehindes ( and hopefully never will ).

And different music needs certain situation to be welcome more readily. Not all music fits to every situation. Just right now you might think, music of ACDC isn't that cool because you need something heavy boosting up like Frontline Assembly instead. Next time you find Frontline Assembly little too screamish and hyped and prefer more calm, slow ACDC instead.
It always depends so don't say music could be dumb or intelligent. Only rarely it is really. ;)

On the contrary, the software can do the music and I spend a lot of time doing it. I can create a backing track in half an hour without even touching a musical instrument.

On the subject of electronic music, I generalised a little too much. Of course, there is a lot of excellent electronic music out there made by people who do things I could never dream of doing. But there is also a lot, mostly on the pop scene, that uses very basic chord sequences and very simple sequencing techniques that, with a few good-looking girls (who probably didn't sing on the recording) on the CD sleeve, sells big numbers of records. That is what I was referring to.

Personally, I still prefer the sound of live instruments (it's my job, if I didn't I'd be out of work) but I've no objection to electronic music as long as it has some intellectually 'musical' content and is not just mass produced near-identical songs.

I like Billy Talent, Sum 41, The Black Mages (a rock band that remixed some battle themes from Final Fantasy and there keyboarder is Noubu Umatsue [SP] the composer of all FF songs), System of the Down and a few indidual songs (like Du Haust and Sink into the Underground)

Lucky thang! I recently saw an interview on Aus TV with David Bowie. He was very charismatic and funny. Loved him in Labyrinth. Love his music. But I went to one of his concerts ages ago, and except for when he performed an upbeat 'Jean, Jeanie', I was bored because his stage persona was so flat.

If music is good, I listen to it. I don't let politics or somebody's actions come between me and great music. If someone was making fantastic music I would have to have a really serious problem with them before I would stop buying it.

Well I don't think anything would stop me listening to the music no matter how much I hate the band members. Like on this Rock Against Bush album, this new band called Yellowcard did a cover of a song that Lagwagon wrote, the song is called Violins. But This song was the greatest song Lagwagon ever wrote, it was my favoutrite by them, but Yellowcard came along and did a really shitty cover of it, they fucked it up so bad they don't deserve to live and I hate them for it. But if they wrote some good songs there would be nothing to stop from listening to them, I would just hate the people who wrote it.

Mostly I prefer The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Alan Parsons Project. Also some of our Russian bands and other, that sounds good: dance, trance, religious etc. I'm creating some of such dance (At least I think so :blink: ) music myself, using Fruity Loops. Ahhh... I remember times, when I had 486, 4 Mb RAM and SB Pro sound card. I had Windows 3.1 and Cakewalk 4.01. That was hard time for me, but that versoin of Cakewalk I'm using even nowadays, because I saw new versions of this program and found, that they are :not_ok: :not_ok: :not_ok: comparing to 4.01. Anyway, I'm glad, that I finished musical school.

Wow an interest in 60's and 70's im just wandering have u ever heard of "the Incredible String Band" ? quite a psychadelicy folk band but they were awesome. I also like the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Syd barret and Barretts Floyd. Not much into Floyd after Barrett left.

I did. I listened to Psalm 69 and The Land of Rape and Honey. Land of Rape and Honey was garbage. Psalm 69 was not bad, but I don't know what exactly makes it industrial music - to me it's metal.

well, i don't think "land of rape and honey" is metal...and "the mind is a terrible thing to taste" and also "dark side of the spoon" are great and not metal. well, if you don't see why ministry are considered an industrial band, i don't know how that can change...
