Mr. G 01-05-2006 07:04 PM

Hi!
I've downladed played Settlers 2 Gold. I runned it in VMD sound, but the music goes in slowmotion. If I run it without VMD the sound hacks.
I'm useing Win XP Pro SP 2 on an Asus lapton.
Thankfull for awnsers.

P.S I cound'n post it in the Technical Stuff forum, so I post it here.

Mr. G 01-05-2006 07:05 PM

Oh, sorry useing Win xp Home. Sorry.

That's not the Prob.
You're quite right here, since it's "Troubleshooting"... :D

Have you tried DosBox yet? Maybe it's because of your machine.
For further advise you should tell a bit more about your PC. Mhz, RAM a.s.o.

Mr. G 02-05-2006 01:40 PM

1.6 ghz Intel celeron
512 mb ddr2 ram
The laptop has integreted mono speakers.
Are you sure that it will be better in DOSbox? If so, how do I mount the S2.exe file then?

Icewolf 02-05-2006 01:44 PM

The thing that many members do is create an DosBox-icon on the Desktop and then simply drag the exe-Data (in your case s2.exe) on that icon.
It's cleaner for DosBox than putting everything straight by typing.
Have you configured your DosBox.conf already?

Mr. G 02-05-2006 02:28 PM

Thank you for the hint.
The music works perfectly in DOSbox, but the game loads and runns very slowly.
Is my machin relly to weak for Settlers 2 in dosbox, or whath should I config to make it run faster?

Romano 02-05-2006 02:43 PM

Try: CTRL-F12 = Speeds up the game

Icewolf 02-05-2006 03:11 PM

When you do the drag & drop thing, you really should edit the dosbox.conf to make DosBox start with higher cycles. That's what you do with Crtl + F12 in the game like Romano said. But this can cause crashes in the game.
When you need support with setting up the conf-file report back. :ok:

Mr. G 02-05-2006 03:22 PM

Problem solved (wrong config.).
If I have installed the game in "C:\Spel\Settlers 2 Gold\s2g", and want to run "C:\Spel\Settlers 2 Gold\s2g\S2.exe" automatically when starting DOSbox, what should type in the autoexec line in the config file?
And If I want dosbox to close automatically when I exit the game, what should I do then?
Thankfully for awnsers!

The config. file right now:

[sdl]

# fulldouble -- Use double buffering in fullscreen.

Mr. G 02-05-2006 03:24 PM

One more question.
Is there any way to make DOSbox use more than 256 colers?

Icewolf 02-05-2006 03:30 PM

...mhhh, well OK, you shouldn't probably post the whole file... <_<
But OK. The CPU-settings are the interesting part:
Quote:

core=dynamic
cycles=auto
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

You should run all right with these settings but probably you should change cycles from auto to a specific number, in your case 15000.
But I'm not too sure about this, 'cause I don't know the "auto" setting. :unsure:

Mr. G 02-05-2006 03:49 PM

It runns better with "auto", than it dose with 15000. But how to change the color settnings?

_r.u.s.s. 02-05-2006 04:59 PM

you have already set maximum number of colors for dosbox

machine = vga

vga = 256 (only 16 in 640*480)
tendy = 16
cga = 4
hercules = 2

So DOSbox dose not support 16 in more than 640*480!!!??? :cry: :not_ok:
Is there any way to speed up the sound in VMD sound then?

I don't get the point of this question. :blink: Actually DosBox supports all the color you ever will need in Dos games. No need to change stuff in resolution or graphics.
When you start the game press Alt+F4 for fullscreen and there you go! :w00t:

Settlers 2 looks awfull in 256 colors. It supports up to 16bits. And I don't want to run it in 640*480 :cry:
Besides, VMD sound is much smarter and easyer to use than dosbox.
It runns perfetly in VMD, but I would be VERY happy if I could speed up the music a bit, since it playes in slowmotion. Dose anyone now how to do?

_r.u.s.s. 03-05-2006 03:52 PM

well, i have tried running settlers 2 in 1024*768 in dos box and it works with all the colors.. what s the problem?

by the way i think you get me in previous post 16 colors not 16 bits. and i was mistaken, it was in true vga, not different vga that dosbox uses

The problem is that it runnes S2 in 256 colors, the game runnes slow, and is lagging (probly to low cpu speed (1,6ghz)). And it craches 50 % of the time and when I try to load the game.

The Fifth Horseman 04-05-2006 03:45 PM

Tried compatibility modes or VDMSound?

Tried both.
VMD works, but the music goes in slow motion.
Is there any way to speed up it a bit?

Guest 06-06-2007 07:39 AM

Not to bump, but.... :(
Sorry.

The Fifth Horseman 06-06-2007 09:00 AM

No way to speed up VDMS.
Sorry, but that about exhausts the available options.

There is a button somewhere to reduce the zoom level, and there is also a button (I beleive) or an option to play the game in plain VGA... I don't really remember where it is tough.

Guest_Mr. G_* 29-07-2007 07:04 AM

Ok, thanks anyway.

The GHz can't be an issue since I play S2G on a 1,0 GHz machine and it runs fine.
Starting it under XP could be an alternative sometimes. But you have to change some stuff in the excuteable. You can find the manual to that in the Compability section.

Not even for DOSbox?
Don't work at all with the sound if I run it under XP.

(sorry for bumping again)

My argument was: My machine is slower than yours and S2G runs fine.
So GHz can't be an issue.

dosraider 28-09-2007 10:44 AM

When I read all this, I would suggest to Mr. G to clean up his PC.
A great deal of dosbox's / VDMS performance depends on how 'clean' your system is.
Begin with killin'all that runs on the background and isn't neccesary.
Fancy desktop enhancements,visual effects, innet conn, MSN ...... whatevers and whatnots.
Run a scandisk, reg cleaner, a-spyware, a-malware .... once in a while.

A good defrag can also help improve dosbox / VDMS achievable speed on a PC.
Not the MS defrag but try this one:
http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/index.php
Freeware and darned good. :)

Whilst running the game hit CTRL+ALT+DEL ONCE, look in task manager at your CPU load, don't go over 90-95%, that's useless, it will even slow your system down.
(minimalize task manager, it stays working in your tray -or it should-.)
