Dark Legions problem, please help
The problem is, the game freezes when I try to move a character on the strategic map. When I click a character I see the yellow squares but when I click on a square the cursor disappears, the game freezes and I have to kill Dosbox. I have been able to play the game a few times though (I don't know why it didn't freeze then).
I'm running the CD version of the game (from Abandonia) on Vista machine using Dosbox 0.72. Things i have tried: - mounting the CD-image with imgmount  - using Daemon Tools and mounting as a cdrom drive  - different sound configurations  - different Dosbox configurations  - patched and unpatched versions  It seems the disk version doesn't have the same problem but I just don't like those copy protection questions. Does anyone know how to solve this problem or at least what might cause this in the first place? |
The only thing I could suggest would be to try a lower version of DOSBox...

By the way, now I'm positive that the problem is somehow sound related. The game runs fine if I choose "no sound" from the sound configurator but I don't like playing without any sound. |
Then, when playing in DOSBox, make sure the game sound is configurated for the right SoundBlaster setting(s). It should help a lot.

EDIT: Just installed DOSBox 0.73 and tried running Dark Legions. I'm still having the same problem. |
I'll need to test this thoroughly - there must be some logic behind the behaviour.

- I have all the game files in C:\Users\My name\Documents\DOS\DLegions - DOSBox (0.72 and 0.73) installed in C:\Users\My name\DOSBox-0.7x - DOSBox configurations are all default (I haven't changed anything since all other games have run fine) - autoexec lines: mount c C:\Users\My name\Documents\DOS c: - And lines in a batch file I use to start the game: imgmount d C:\Users\My name\Documents\DOS\DLegions\DarkLegion.cue -t iso dl.exe And an image of the situation just to make things clear: the music is still playing but the mouse pointer has disappeared and keyboard commands won't work either. Thus, the only option is to exit DOSBox. |

mount c c:\ c: cd games\dlegions That might help it a bit. Also be sure to set the soundcard in the setup of the game to Soundblaster / Soundblaster PRO / Soundblaster 16 with the latter being the best option if available. The correct values with default DosBox configuration would be Port 220, IRQ 7, DMA 1, (if available for 16 bit sound) HDMA 5 |

Better and safer would be mount c c:\games c: cd dlegions Always a bad idea to mount your C:\ root as C:\ in dosbox, really. Zirkoni, about your problem, I don't know where it goes wrong on your PC, I run it without problems on a default dosbox 0.73 install. (XP and Vista). |
I finally decided to try a lower version of DOSBox. I installed DOSBox-0.63, started the game a few times and it didn't freeze, at first. Started it a few more times and it froze just like in newer versions of DOSBox.
It seems Dark Legions is more stable on my PC with 0.63 but it still freezes occasionally. Maybe i'll try some other version of DOSBox later and see if it works better. |
Did you try out 0.73? It got out only a few days ago. :)

Found a Workaround
I don't know if you're still struggling with this problem, zirkoni, but I ran into the exact same problem on my system. I'm not sure what causes it, but I have come up with a workaround for you.
When you first load the game, it shows the Silicon Knights cinematic with the rotating cube and the sword falling into it from above. If you hit a key to skip past that cinematic (as I do), it'll take you to the double-doors with engravings of all the different unit types in the game. Once there, wait for all previous cinematic sounds to stop playing! This can take a few seconds, so be patient. Once you hear the sound of soft music start to take it's place, then it's safe to open the double doors to the main menu. Once you do, you'll see the standard START, LOAD, LINK, and QUIT options, and a fire brazier burning on the steps. Note the sound effect of the fire. Waiting for the soft music is the key. If you fail to do so, when you click any of the 4 menu items (START, for example), you'll be taken to the next screen, but you'll still hear the fire sound effect in the background. This is the signal to listen for, because that tells you that your game is going to freeze up when you try to move one of your army's units in-game. If you continue hearing the fire sound effect, the only way to remedy the problem (that I've found) is to exit the game and re-enter, making sure not to open those first double doors until you hear the soft music. My son and I have tried this several times now, and it works for us every time. Hope this helps! :max: |
Thanks Syndog, your solution seems to be working.
