It keeps on giving me an error "No Disk" and a bunch of numbers and letters.

MrFlibble 04-06-2010 10:34 PM

I don't know if it can solve your problem (sorry), but you could try inserting any disk in your CD-ROM/mount a virtual CD with any content that game will recognize and run the game that way.

dosraider 04-06-2010 10:48 PM

Don't know if the game runs on a recent OS (it's against my religion to even try to run those ol'things on a modern PC....) but it runs fine in VPC/W98SE

IIRC, War Wind does run under XP, even without the need to set Win9x compatibility mode (not sure about that last one though; and this is indeed worth trying if there are problems running it on modern OSs).

To anyone getting the No Disk error, go into the device manager and disable your floppy drive. Saw it on a different forum, credit goes to someone named Bruno. He also took it from another forum :P. The fix worked for me right away, it's worth giving it a shot especially if you don't even have a floppy drive.

Don't believe the front page review lies!

First off I'd like to say I don't agree with the author of this review that this game has "major flaws". It's actually a great game! A RTS Gem from the mid 90's.

The difficulty level is not "way too high", it's just a challenging game. It's true that the AI starts with more units but it's like that in all RTS games. If they had fewer at the start you would just walk right into their base and yay, misson complete! This is not a pitched battle game it's more of guerilla warfare and skirmish game. Also being able to upgrade each and every single unit (with 5 different bionic upgrades for speed, damage, stealth, health and vision) just makes this game more deep and allows you to create your own hero units.

The review also fails to mention a lot of things that make this game really compelling and fun to play.

For instance the flora and fauna of Yavaun. The game maps are riddled with neutral animals and beasts. Some of the beasts are hostile and will attack your units on sight, some won't attack unless attacked (or in some cases if you attack their young) and yet others attack you if and when they feel like it. Some races (The eggra and shama li if I remember correctly) can even tame some of the beasts and use them for war.

You can construct and use vehicles in this game! And no I don't mean you build a tank and it's a unit on it's own, you have to crew them with your units in order for them work and if you leave them your enemy can sneak in and steal them. The game has three vehicles; a boat, a car (of sorts) and a hovercraft!

The review mentions that you can sometimes hire heroes from the inns but does not mention that each and every hero is totally unique and has it's own model and different stats and fuctions. When warcraft 2 came out, the heroes you got there just had the same model as the basic units only with increased damage and health although the two games debuted around the same time. There was really nothing unique about the WC2 heroes except for a different name and statchanges.

The four different race's playstyle is vastly different from each other. In warcraft 2 for example the two different factions had just about the same units, just with different models, spells and upgrades. In War Wind each race has the same basic unit archetype, being; scouts, warriors and spellcasters (along with some mercenaries that you can't train but only hire from the inn) but each unit has their own stats and strengths. Also when you have a certain number of the same unit type you can upgrade one of them to a higher ranked unit with better stats and abilities. For example when you have 3 Oblinox soldiers you can make one of them a Captain Or when you have 5 Eggra squires you can make one of them into a Knight. Each of the races also has one "super-unit" that is unique to each race. The Eggra get the Grenadier, a long range damage dealer, which trains from an artisan worker. The Oblinox get the Colossus, an Oblinox-tank hybrid, which trains from a Captain. The Tha'roon get the Jumptrooper, an armored flying damage dealer, which trains from an their high tier scout. And the Shama li get the Elemental, a huge, fast, tough close combat monster, that trains from the Shama li's high tier spell caster.

But most importantly the storyline of the game is really good. Each of the four races gets their own unique campaign with about 10 missions each if I remember correctly. And it has plenty of CGI cutscenes between mission that looked really crisp back in the 90's.

I could ramble on about many more things because this game is really very deep and entertaining and I played it a lot back when it came out and still do now and then :D

So if you are reading this instead of the front page review and you like your RTS with a little more micro and simcitying download this game cause it's awesome!

5/5

P.S. If you happen upon the sequel; War Wind 2: The Human Onslaught. Turn around and walk away FAST! :sucks:

Why is the War Wind 2: The Human Onslaught bad?

Aramazon 13-02-2011 12:49 AM

I've never played WW1 but the way Kiddo talks about it it sounds awesome. I have been playing WW2 and it definitely hasn't exactly warmed my heart.

I've been playing the technological humans and it's been a bunch of missions that just sort of force you to travel across the map. I've yet to have a full on my camp vs the enemy camp scenario...umm...the tutorial was oppressively long and boring I don't think I finished it. The interface can be a bit awkward at times and the whole upgraded troops thing doesn't seem that awesome...like my upgraded dude can make some kind of bomb, but fiddling with items is too convoluted in the middle of a battle...so not much there...

I dunno...is WW1 actually way better than the sequel?

I have an old issue of PC Gamer with some War Wind ads in it. Mostly of the cover, but for years I thought it looked pretty cool. All those minotaur looking things in a weird bizarre landscape looking really angry. Might give it a try in a few days.

Minor problem

Downloaded the game, (played it ages ago) and while it runs seemingly fine, I can't save. Escape opens up the menu, and things like return to main menu or quit work fine, but trying to get it to save or load just has it ignore me.

I seem to recall that this opened up some windows in the old game, and maybe that's causing a problem. Anyone know how to fix this?

There's a possibility that the saved games folder (or the whole directory where the game is installed) is for some reason marked as read-only, and this prevents the saved games from being written to your HD.

So how bout multiplayer?

Does anyone play this multiplayer? I've played a couple of games locally with my siblings and it can get pretty crazy. It also can get a bit silly with all the sweet stealth options. I Had a scout sitting in a tree outside the enemy base and it was invisible, a worker came along and took the tree but never even noticed the dude. I didn't relize it until the game was half over that I had a soldier just sitting in the middle of enemy territory XD. I like playing as the "Bad Guys" in this game. They seem to have so much more character than the other races, although the nature lovers are fun to play as with their seer abilities.

I noticed there is some Multiplay program packaged with download, but I have no Idea how it works or if indeed it still does. Is there still a online community for this game or is it as unjustly dead as it looks?

hey man, so far i was able to run Warwind from the command prompt (running as administrator).... but... it shows some horrible and unorganized pixels. Then i click on the screen, and at left clicking a wizard appears asking me to fill information to play multiplayer or single player.. i choose single player and fill all the info (map to play, race, etc) and then i click "play", but it returns me to the horrible barf of pixels :'(

if i workaround this i'll keep it posted

I just downloaded the game and have the same Error = 100 :/. I would love to play this game again on my WIN10 laptop :) If u get any new information please share them

It's an old game, so probably incompatible with newer versions of windows. Try some kind of virtual machine running windows 98 or XP. Otherwise, I'm not sure.

correct the review

the section that starts with "The game also has some major flaws" needs to be removed. The only flaw that is mentioned is (in different ways) the difficulty level(too high). There is a enemy difficulty slide, that you can change anytime. Also the different races equals different difficulty levels.
from readme.txt
"Tha' Roon (Easy)
Obblinox (Challenging)
Shama' Li (Difficult)
Eaggra (Expert)"
