As a new year has abandoned us, it is time to look back and see what more is considered abandoned in the new year.

Just as many of you are aware of, we here on Abandonia follows strict rules regarding what is and what is not considered abandonware. For games protected by ESA, age is an important factor, and for the first time we are delighted to share with you a list of games that are now considered to fall outside ESA's active protection period.

This will be a New Year's tradition from now on, and we hope that you are just as thrilled about this as we are. All in all Abandonia has, once again, become the proud hoster of 25 "new" games.

The following games are now considered abandonware:

  • Adventures of Willy Beamish, The

YES! YEEEEEEESS!!! :brain: :brain:

I can't help but cheer, as this is a great day for Abandonia. The day Monkey Island is finally OUUURRSS!!!
^_^

P.S. I'll review Discworld 2 if you allow me ^_^

Lulu_Jane 01-01-2007 05:33 AM

Oh it's going to be a good year!

Monkey island and various Sierra/Dynamix games! HOORAY!

The Dagger Of Amon Ra - you're mine finally :brain:

Curudan 01-01-2007 06:29 AM

Yeeha! Even better than Christmas!

Japo 01-01-2007 06:31 AM

Sorry if this is a silly question, but is this status universal or is it particular to Abandonia because of its relationships with the companies and ESA or some other reason? Won't the companies or ESA get mad at ANY site whatsoever for offering downloads of these? (To any site they're not mad at yet, that is.)

PS: Fawfulhasfury, PM Kosta or Reup

I will pay VERY close attention to the additions in the weeks that follows :) This looks promising, but Japofran might be onto something.

Still: I hope to see the Mighty Pirate, Elaine and LeChuck soon.

A very nice supprise indeed :kosta:

And a

HAPPY NEW YEAR, ABANDONIA

Storm 01-01-2007 10:19 AM

Has anyone actually been able to download Monkey Island 1? Keeps giving me a 404 error.

Oh, and a happy new year to all!

retro 01-01-2007 10:30 AM

I got the same issue with Monkey Island 1&2.

And I would like to add a comment: Zak McKracken is still shown as ESA protected although it is older than the Monkey Island. What are the criterias for being ESA protected ? What is the logic behind this ?

Sartoris 01-01-2007 10:58 AM

Excellent news, I hope to see at least some of them here soon! :ok:

[/b]
The logic is that ESA has told us that they and LucasArts are still actively protecting that game. Pretty simple logic, really ;)

As for the two Monkey Island games, they appear to have been mysteriously deleted from our server.

Now I don't know why, but I know that we had one guy loose on the server a while back deleting everything in his path, but I do know that we will fix this asap.

Edit: Oh, and Dark Piedone, your signature is over 300KB big. Please remove the stickman - as it takes ages to open this topic and wait for that animation to begin. And even more so now that the server is slow.

Sorry about that, but Final Doom was a miss on my part. It is still sold at id Software's homepage. It was supposed to be Master Levels for DOOM II.

The mistake has been corrected.

The Bard 01-01-2007 05:38 PM

I dunno if it's me, but I can't seem to find Discworld II anywhere, looks like it's been mysteriously erased too... Too bad :wallbash:

Tom Henrik 01-01-2007 06:41 PM

Monkey Island 1 works now, thanks to Fawful who could quickly supply the missing archive. He has also supplied the missing MI2 archive, and I am currently trying to get that one up and running as well.

Edit: And now MI2 works as well. :ok:

LostFool 01-01-2007 08:49 PM

For my first post, i'd like to thank you, for you've made my new year.
Wish you all a prosperous year full of good tidings.

A LucasArts Lover

P.S: now only waiting for the Day of the tenticle, Sam & Max and Full Throttle ;)

Tom Henrik 01-01-2007 10:05 PM

All three of which are sold, so you'll just have to have a lot of patience :P

I wanted to review Normality long time ago but it was still sold. It is the first first-person adventure ever and it is really good. I played cracked version without CD and i guess that one would be good for hosting. Unfortunally, i don't have it anymore so i'll need it if we have it at all.

As for Final Doom, i played TNT like zilion of times but i didn't like Plutonia much. Still i can do review so after that we just need to wait for it to becoome abw. Is this good idea at all?

I am going to be a party pooper once more (and then I am done). This is the first time we have ever done anything like this, and so it is really easy to make mistakes. Since id Software is a core ESA member, their games are actively protected for 15 years. This means that Master Levels for DOOM II is not abandoned, and won't be for several years to come.

All the rest of the games, however, are correct.

The Fifth Horseman 02-01-2007 09:58 AM

What about Space Hulk? It's been 15 years (or more) already, AFAIK, and it appears that neither EA or GW are interested in protecting it anymore.

Note that until very recently, You-Know-Who had it as ESA-protected, but now they have it for download.

Tom Henrik 02-01-2007 10:13 AM

Space Hulk is a 1993 Electronic Arts production, and won't be AW until 2 more years have passed.

humorguy 02-01-2007 11:01 AM

Well let's hope the speed issue is solved so we can download them in less than 10 hours! :( Sort of bad news to see loads of new games when the server fix doesn't seem to have happened yet....

Tom Henrik 02-01-2007 11:10 AM

Yeah...

I downloaded Albion by starting the download before I went to bed. That way it was complete when I woke up this morning. Not exactly the optimal solution... :(

How big is it, and would you also review it and take screenshots?

LostFool 02-01-2007 11:32 PM

Don't know if this is the right palce to post, but just to note:
Monkey Island 2 has a "lam-o copy protection" at the start where a random recipe sentence is given and you have to fill in two, two digit numbers to complete it.
I've tried looking in the downloaded files but there's nothing there on the topic, and am yet to look around elsewhere (on the net). If i do find anything i'll get back with and update, however i could find out that i've done something horribly wrong or the answer is dead easy, in which case forgive my ignorance :P

Ok - i think theres supposed to be some sort of 'codewheel' from what i understand, and since MI2 is abandonware should we not have some sort of access to this? - correct me if i'm wrong.

P.S: have already completed The Secret of Monkey Island :) - both endings, no walkthroughs.

On the version I have, there is no copy protection. If the admins want it for upload, just let me know. :ok:

Tom Henrik 03-01-2007 12:38 AM

The MI 2 archive does come with the copy protection, yeah - but there are two ways to fix this. ;)

1. Play the game in Scumm VM - the copy-protection is automatically bypassed.
2. Use the copy protection wheel located in the Extras part on the game page. That's what I use - and it is pretty easy once you figure out how to use it. (And you don't have to copy it on cardboard, really, if you can imagine it in your head).

Simply turn the wheel so that the two icons are side by side (the top wheel with the holes is smaller than the bottom wheel with the numbers). Then locate the correct potion name, and figure out where it would be in connection to the icons.

(It's hard to explain, but it really isn't that hard to do - of course, if you don't want to twist your brain, just use Scumm VM). :ok:

For any more discussion about the games, please use the appropriate game topics.

In case anyone else share the same confusion as a lot of people that has contacted me.... No, the "Unreal (1991)" game is not the popular FPS. It is a sidescrolling arcade game made by Ubi Soft.

A tip would be that the FPS was not made in the same year as Monkey Island 1 & 2, and Jones in the Fast Lane. :P

By the way, there are some other games (I own), which might be candidates (according to the time criteria) for AW within the next one or two years:

- Fragile Allegiance (aka K240) (Gremlin, 1997)
- Descent to Undermountain (Interplay, 1998)
- Liberation Day (aka Fallen Haven II) (1998)
- Imperialism (I) (SSI, 1998)
- War Wind II (SSI, Human Onslaught) (1998)
- Pax Imperia Eminent Domain (1997)

I'm curios about a few things, as well.

Firstly, why does Space Hulk become AW after 15 years have passed? I thought copyright for US software lasted 50 years after publication.

Secondly, what's the logic behind unsold games, such as the Sierra ones? E.g. QFG2 AW, QFG1/3/4/5 not, e.g. Willy Beamish/Heart of China AW, Rise of the Dragon not, and so on and so forth.

Also, when's the ESA reviewing this, and when do you expect a revision?

Pretty cool stuff. Downloaded most of the ones I wanted from here long ago, though. Just glad others can finally play Keen 6, and the rest (especially Sierra titles).

Thanks to Abandonia for keeping on keeping on, and best wishes for its' 2007.

Regards,
- Spike

75, I believe.
Anyways, if you read the AW List Details, you will see that Abandoned ESA titles are not actively protected. Active protection varies for games developed by core ESA members, and subsidiary companies. That doesn't mean they are not protected by law. Just that no-one cares, but of course there are always exceptions. Which will be detailed below.

Quote:

Secondly, what's the logic behind unsold games, such as the Sierra ones? E.g. QFG2 AW, QFG1/3/4/5 not, e.g. Willy Beamish/Heart of China AW, Rise of the Dragon not, and so on and so forth.[/b]
Quest for Glory 1 has been considered AW for a year, already. Quest for Glory 2 should have been AW for just as long, but it had been overlooked - and I thought I should correct the status of QFG2, and bring attention to it, by mentioning it in the New Year's Update. Quest for Glory 3 was made in 1992, and so will be considered AW next year. Quest for Glory 4 was made in 1993, and so will be considered AW the year after... and so on. Rise of the Dragon is AW, and has been for a year. Willy Beamish and Heart of China became AW this year.

Quote:

As Abandonia is such a popular site, ESA checks us out very frequently. They don't really contact us, unless they have a reason to point a finger. However, I have several times informed them about the AW list, and asked them for advice. Thanks to their help, I am confident in the AW list - and that it really works to everyone's benefits.

For more details regarding what is considered abandonware, and what isn't - along with the names of all the known ESA companies and subsidiaries, and their active protection period... you can check out this topic

Grats, nice list.
Just one question:

When will Celtic Legends be on the site?

When someone offers to supply both the game and a review - and then does so ;)

OK, so the gist is- 15 years after publication, a game's up for grabs, unless the ESA contacts you and says otherwise, your relationship with the ESA being an open one, so you find out quickly whether game X is allowed or not. Is that right?

Also, I presume with say, Space Quest 1 VGA, which should be due this year, that that is excluded as it's being sold?

I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just genuinely curious.

Well done, Tom. I was visiting Abandonia and AR recently, and downloaded a swag of freeware fanmade games. You've done really well with this.

That is 100% correct - except for the case with Disney. They have an unlimited protection time. :)

Exactly. Same with the entire Police Quest series, Leisure Suit Larry series, and King's Quest series. :ok:

Pick the answer you like the best.

1. HOTU is not Abandonia. They have their own set of rules, and we have ours.
2. Maybe they have some special deal that allows them to host them.
3. Maybe they don't care.
4. Maybe they don't know.
5. Maybe they just risk it.

Thing is. We don't control the content on HOTU. Miss Underdogs will have to take responsibility for what she puts on her site. Not us. ;)

*cough* Disney *cough* *cough*

Japo 05-01-2007 02:48 PM

The law isn't differet for Disney, that their games have "unlimited" protection means that, unless they change their minds, they will protect them for all those 95 or whatever years. Anyway I think the figure was different for individual- and corporation-owned copyrights. Like the lifespan of the individual author plus 75 years, or 95 years after creation for corporation-created works, regardless of how long the corporation itself remains in place. It's somewhere in Wikipedia.

Tulac 05-01-2007 03:11 PM

No I meant that Disney is in large responsible for the copyright laws lasting longer.

Japo 05-01-2007 03:24 PM

Ah yes it's true I heard. Hey it can't be too long before Mickey Mouse is released to the public domain, he's like 100 years old, isn't he?

Tulac 05-01-2007 04:14 PM

78 years I think, but I also think that copyright counts after the death of the author.

[/b]
As Tulac coughed out above, (hehe), Disney is responsible for the long duration of which this type of copyright stays under protection of the law. And you just (unknowingly, maybe?) mentioned the reason why. When the Disney busines realized that they would loose their claim to Mickey Mouse, they put pressure on the system to increase the timeframe.

This is also why Disney is considered to have an unlimited protection period, because you can bet any amount of money on that once Mickey is nearing the "retirement" age, they are going to once again fight against it.

And they have good reasons for doing so. Disney is one of the world's biggest corporations, with dealings ranging anywhere from comics to movies, and cruises to family parks. Whatever the entertainment, Disney is there.

However, all of this costs immense amounts of money. Especially the maintenance and extravaganza of the parks, but also the Disney village for mortaly sick kids - where the kids get every wish fulfilled in their last living months. Disney (and the other village sponsors) gain absolutely nothing from this village, and it costs huge amounts of money.

In other words, if Disney loose their monopoly on Mickey, they will start to loose money in certain franchises - which will ultimately lead to severe cut-downs on other fields.

You mean Disney would have to get creative again? They would have to invent(new characters, new services), which is what every other company does.

The full CD version is probably too big for the site, but it would definately be something for the ISO forum.

Pixie 06-01-2007 12:01 PM

Is Discworld 2 on this site yet? I searched for it but got no results.

humorguy 06-01-2007 01:03 PM

Tom, how about an 'ISO of the Month' or something? Or one in each genre if the server can stand it? I mean 2-300mb is not a lot visa vee downloading, and if it was only up for a month, one title, followed by one new title the following month, cycling back to the first and continuing would it put a strain on the server? I mean only the people that want that game would download it, if you didn't like adventure games you wouldn't download and play it just because that adventure game had speech, would you? Same goes for all the other genres. While there are some titles that maybe many would download, have that up once a week for 24 hours or something?

Am I asking too much? It's just that some games, like Strike Commander, for example, just aren't playable without the speech, without all the chitchat between pilots when dogfighting, etc! And that's just one example! :)

Tom Henrik 06-01-2007 04:45 PM

That's a post better suited for the Suggestions/Comment forum ;)

And, yes, it would strain the server - a lot.

Let's say we just have one huge ISO on the site, like Bioforge. There would be a lot of people who would immediately download the game from our server - which would mean a serious amount of strain shortly after the game hit the site.

However, as people got their grubby little hands on the game, they wouldn't download it again, and so the strain would decrease to a point where it would stabilize with new people arriving at the site and downloading the game.

And that would be it.

Whereas having an ISO of the Month, we would have seen an enourmous strain on the server - as everyone would be waiting like hungry wolves at the beginning of the month for the new ISO to appear. And as this feature becomes more wellknown, people would flock to the site on specific dates to download an ISO - then disappear back to where they came from.

We would never see the download ratio go down and stabilize - it would be sky-high all the time, with the highest peak being right after we relase that month's ISO.

So, in conclusion, it would seriously strain our server.

If you want an ISO - that's what the ISO forum is for. Once you have 100 posts you gain access to that forum.

And please, let's try to stick on topic about the games that has been classified as abandonware this New Year, and not dwindle off into debates about Disney and ISO ideas. ;)

It is a great site and very well put together. My reason for post is much more selfish however. Figure I've been getting games from here for awhile, might as well sign up on the boards!

Question on Jones in the Fast Lane...you said it was now abadoned and therefore OK to download. Yet when I checked it January 2 (one day later!) the ESA was still in place...did ESA call and say *we want this to still be protected*? What's the story regarding Keeping Up with the Jones?

All in all, a very thorough and easy-to-nagivate site....I'm very impressed :)

humorguy 08-01-2007 06:03 AM

Although it's early, site seems to be back up again! No reloads or anything slow. Downloaded a game at over 100k and overall hope this doesn't slow down too much during the daytime/weekends!

So wahwhooo!! well done and thanks, if it is up and running normally again! : :tomato:

The following games are now considered abandonware:
  • Jones in the Fast Lane (aka Keeping Up With Jones)
    (Not the AB game)
[/b]
;)

The story is quite simple:

<!--QuoteBegin-AW List

  • Jones in the Fast Lane (aka Keeping Up With Jones) --- 1991 --- Sierra On-Line, Inc. --- Abandonware.
(The game mentioned in this topic.)
  • Jones in the Fast Lane (Enhanced CDROM version) --- 1992 --- Sierra On-Line, Inc. --- Protected.
    (The game on the site.)

So, in other words, the game we have on the site will become abandoned next year.

Much quicker way to find out the status on games, than asking in a forum - and waiting for someone to do a search for you and then answer you. Just do a search, and you'll know the answer quicker than you can say "I wonder what the status is...." ;)

Well, part one IS on the site (has been since before you joined).

Quest for Glory

But adding QFG2 would finally round the trilogy up, so that would be a great addition.

Romano 17-03-2007 09:30 AM

Quest for Glory 1 (VGA) from the year 1992 is on the site, and is protected.
Frodo has prepared Quest for Glory 1 (EGA) from the year 1990, and it's abandonware :ok:

Sebatianos 17-03-2007 09:44 AM

OK... but did anyone mention it to Kosta? Because I remember that there were questiong if even the Windows versions of the same game (like Civilization or Colonization) were different enough from their originals to be added... The difference between two DOS versions (EGA and VGA) seem to be lesser... Still if it's similar as with Larry, PQ or SQ series... Where an interfase is different and stuff...

I'm still looking forward to playing it though :ok:
